10257 Fred Burdette Rich - November 8, 1867 - March 27, 1938. Son of Isaac Jaquith and Harriet E. Perry Rich. Husband of Anna M. Lacy Rich.
Newspaper Obituary - Monday, March 28, 1938 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Fred B. Rich of Richland, first commissioner of jurors in Oswego county, widely known in public life of this town and county, died Sunday noon in St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. His last illness was brief. Mr. Rich entered the hospital for operation and treatment about two weeks ago. He had not been in good health for several weeks prior to that time. Up to late last week his friends hoped for his recovery, but it was learned Saturday his condition had taken a grave turn. Mr. Rich was in his 71st year. He was appointed commissioner of jurors in late December, 1937, for a term of four years, after the office had been created by the Board of Supervisors earlier that month. Appointment was made, as required by law, by Supreme Court Justice C. I. Miller, County Judge Don A. Colony and County Clerk W. Harold Richardson. Mr. Rich took office January 1, 1938. Mr. Rich first formulated a letter which he sent to attorneys asking suggestions relative to records and forms for the office, particularly as to a questionnaire to be made up for prospective jurors. During the last weeks of active duty as commissioner he was engaged in making out this questionnaire, preliminary to starting a series of visits to cities and towns of the county to contact citizens and make up a list of jury eligibles, from which grand and trial juries hereafter would be chosen. Prior to his tenure as commissioner, Mr. Rich was a supervisor from Richland for seven terms, serving up to December 31, 1937. He declined to stand for another term and Norman L. Clark of Pulaski succeeded him. Mr. Rich entered public life in 1923, being elected supervisor from Richland, and serving successfully ever since, except for one term. Mr. Rich was chairman of the board in 1925 and held membership on the important supply committee and other committees.
Succeeded His Father - Born at Fernwood, then Holmesville, November 8, 1867, Mr. Rich was a son of Isaac and Harriet Perry Rich. His father was a leader in business and public affairs of Richland and the county. Attending Pulaski and Mexico academies, Mr. Rich graduated from the latter. Immediately thereafter he became associated with his father in operation of a general store at Fernwood, and tool over the business in 1896, conducting it more than 15 years. Mr. Rich was also interested in banking and other business activities. Mr. Rich was 38 years old when he entered public life as a candidate for supervisor from his native town. He was postmaster at Fernwood for 28 years. Fire March 16 this year destroyed the Rich building where the general store had been located over 70 years. It was established in 1866 by Isaac Rich, continued by his son, Fred, until 1921, then sold to Roy Blanchard. H. J. Webb bought the store from Blanchard and sold it to Clarence Peters, who was proprietor when it was destroyed by fire. Being interested in community affairs at Fernwood. and Pulaski, Mr. Rich was a member of the Methodist church, Pulaski Lodge, 415, F. & A.M., and Pulaski Odd Fellows Lodge. His only immediate survivor is his wife, formerly Anna M. Lacy, whom he married August 24, 1904, but he has several cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral of Mr. Rich has been arranged for Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home. Rev. George A. Butler will officiate and interment will be in South Richland cemetery. Scores of county officials, including a delegation from the Board of Supervisors, will attend the services.

10273 Freda Matteson Nars was one of our most vivacious, yet earthy cousins. In her youth she was a clerical worker with unmatched filing skills. She worked at Mohawk Communications in Chadwicks, from which she retired. The story goes that when Freda once took a day off the office staff was in disarray as Freda filed bills by invoice number, not name--for she could remember where everything was having total recall. In her beloved Raquette Lake Freda was known by one and all, the Nar's table always had someone there for coffee or a piece of pie on summer days. As the Secretary of the Raquette Lake Fish & Game Club Freda sent out a newsletter and organized dinners. Freda was an early and active supporter of the Family Reunion and information gathering. A frequent correspondent, Freda wrote weekly to several people. Freda is buried in Old Forge where the deer and the rabbits can frolic above her. Matteson, Freda Ruth (I72308)

10274 Freda Millspaugh (Strong, Shaver, Butler)

03/20/1922 - 07/16/2017

Freda was born March 20, 1922 in Leominster, MA, to Ellen Backus and Fred Strong. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her first husband Harold Shaver, second husband Donald Butler, third husband Phillip Millspaugh, sisters Stella Bailey, June Switzer, brothers William Bailey, Daniel Moore, step-brother Leslie Moore, and step-daughter Marilyn Roberts. She is survived by her daughter Sandra (David) Burton of Summerville, FL, grandchildren Kent(Rose) Burton, Port Orchard, WA; Kelly(Kevin) Brandon, Palmyra, PA; Keith Burton, Cleona, PA; son Harold (Bud) Shaver of Horseheads, NY, grandchildren Karlie(Frank) Rinere Mooresville, NC; Kristen(Jim) Lee Inman, SC son Richard (Patti) Butler of Punta Gorda, FL, grandchildren Christina Margut Rochester, NY: Amanda Riviera Rochester, NY step-daughter Donna (Walt) Nash of San Antonio, FL, step-grandchildren Pam(Ralph) Grazelle Mexico, NY; Mary(Dave) Ledefaue Sitka, AK; sister Mona Vibbert of Palmyra, NY, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. When she was eight years old, she and her sister Stella were rescued from a car fire by their father Frederick Strong, who later died due to his injuries sustained during the rescue. Friends urged her mother to place the children in foster homes but she would not consider it and moved with the children to their grandfather's home in New Hampshire. A few years later her mother remarried and moved the family to central New York. When she was 14, her stepfather left the family desolate and no one had a driver's license which was important since they lived in a house on a dirt road in the country. Freda had to walk a considerable distance to school every day and she was the only one able to stop at the welfare office after school to sign her family up for assistance. She also had to carry flour, sugar, lard, oatmeal, etc home for the family. She never complained. Because of her, the family had food to eat and they survived. While living there, Freda received her schooling but dropped out after the 11" grade because the family could not afford the textbooks for 12" grade. She started to work at Titcomb's Department store in Baldwinsville earning enough money to buy her younger sister, Mona, her first dress. In Baldwinsville she met a young meat cutter Harold (Sandy) Shaver. He was nicknamed Sandy because of is red hair. Harold and Freda were married in 1943. With husband Harold, they purchased and operated a Red & White country grocery store in Clay, NY. Harold died in 1949 when Freda was only 27 and she was left with a 5 year old daughter and 4 year old son. Freda's attitude was: "You do what you have to do, an attitude she inherited from her mother. To help pay for Harold's medical expenses, she would deliver groceries from the store once a week to the doctor who treated Harold. She continued to operate the store on her own until she married Don Butler in 1951. In 1952, their son Rick was born. In 1959, Don was transferred to Elmira with Millbrook Bread Company and the family moved to Elmira Heights. After a short while, they opened a lunch counter business on Elmira's southside but chose to build a restaurant/residence in the Alpine Junction area. While under construction in 1963, Don died. Freda continued with the project convincing the bank she could be successful and the "Little Gem" restaurant was born. When she married Phil Millspaugh in 1974, she sold the restaurant/residence and semi-retired. For a few years she worked part-time selling real estate. She and Phil enjoyed traveling with their camper even going to Alaska and also spending time at Phil's cottage on Keuka Lake. In later years, after Phil died in 1988, she enjoyed dancing with her dear friend Dominic Giambo and was also a member of the "Dancing Grannies". Freda's life was not always easy, but she enjoyed it to the fullest. Her motto was "You do what you have to do", and Freda did. Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, December 26, 1917 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Death Claims Fred Hilton - The village was greatly shocked, Sunday morning, when it was told that Frederick F. Hilton, our mail carrier between the depot and the post office, had died. It was scarcely known, outside his own family, that he was off-duty, until the news of his death was announced. Saturday forenoon he carried the mail and went home about half-past eleven, complaining of distress in his stomach. Home remedies were administered but he did not get relief. Physicians were called and it was decided that an operation would be made, Sunday morning, for appendicitis. He grew worse through the night, suffering intensely until about seven o'clock, when he lapsed into a quiet stupor and before the family realized that he had passed away. Frederick F. In the accident he lost one of his hands, yet, despite the crippled condition he was always at work. Twelve years ago he moved to this village and was employed about the town in various occupations until seven years ago when he took the contract to carry the mail from the depot to the post office. He has had a hard job, long hours and hard work with a small salary which necessitated is working much at other things to make a living. He often worked beyond his strength which had much to do with breaking his health. After his death a postmortem revealed the fact that he had an abscess in the stomach for which nothing could have been done as an opening was made by the affection through the wall of the stomach. Mr. Hilton was a member of the Baptist church and Pulaski Lodge, I.O.O.F. His funeral was held this afternoon, at one o'clock. Rev. E. A. Rogers officiated. Burial at Orwell. Mr. Hilton is survived by his widow, two sons, Mervin B., an attorney at Cleveland, Mississippi, and Lester H. in the employ of a railroad, located at Boston; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Elmer Wilson, who resides in the Hilton home; a brother, Hobart Hilton, and a sister, Mrs. J.
