CENSUS DATE 1830 Preston Twp, Wayne Co., PA roll#160, pg 158 CENS DATE
1860 PLAC New Milford, Susquehanna Co, PA roll#1186, pg 558 DEAT DATE 9 SEP 1867 Wayne Co , PA Buried Stanton Hill Cem, Shehawken, Wayne Co, PA

Cemetery record and History of Wayne Co say he was born in New Bedford, MA although I had it as Dartmouth from another source. At an early age was put on a "coasting" ship as a cabin-boy and cook, and subsequently learned the shoe-making trade. Went with his family to Saratoga, N.Y. in 1796. After his marriage to Lucretia there in 1799, they moved to Mt. Pleasant PA, where 2 of her sisters and her half-uncle, Samuel Stanton lived. He moved in and cleared a lot north of Mt. Pleasant on the old road 2 CONC east of where Joseph Tanner lived. Joseph Tanner did the 1801 assessment for taxes which lists Elihu. Subsequently he bought an ajoining lot about 60 rods east of where William Wright later lived. A few years later he bought and cleared a farm north of Joseph Dix. In 1806 he built 1 mile of the Cochecton and Great Bend (Newburg) Turnpike road. In 1813 he sold the original place to a Mr. Hall for $1,400 and bought the Godfrey Stevenson place at Atwater Hollow, built a saw-mill and moved in a carding machine. In 1818 he sold out to Heaton Atwater for $1,500 in patent rights and $1,500 in an exhibition of wax figures and paintings. After traveling thru a large part of New York, he sold them at a loss. The next spring he bought property in Susquehanna county with $750 down, which he lost. "In 1819 real estate and property had become so depreciated in value that father despaired of paying for his farm in Susquehanna county, and having more ambition than prudence, determined to retrieve his fortune and made a dash into the lumber woods and bought the Pine lot at Six mile, now Como." He bought 400 acres from Samuel P. Green (1821?) and finished the sawmill which was quite successful in supplying the first rafts of lumber to Stockport. In 1820 the Tallmans made up 12 of the 28 people living in what later became Preston Twp. In 1822 he bought "The Big Pine Lot" (Kryder lot) and his son Christopher and son-in-law David Babcock went to see it thru heavy snow and timber. In the spring of 1823 they moved there and he built a log house, a sawmill at the outlet of Stanton Pond (Island Lake), and cleared some "fallow". All of this property was in Scott Township, near the boundary with Preston, as Wayne was not formed until 1828. He also opened up a road from Pleasant Mount to Hale Eddy on the Delaware River. In 1824 he hired Miss Sarah Jane Stoddard to teach 4 or 5 children in an old log house on his place. A school built in 1829 or 1830 was the first public improvement made in the town. 1830 census listing in Preston Twp lists his family, next to (Christopher) Palmer Tallman, as: male 1=10-15, 2=15-20, 1=30-40, 1=40-50 fem 1=10-15, 1=15-20, 1=40-50 Listed in Susquehanna Co in the 1860 census as a farmer age 80 ($1,200 land, $200 prop), with his wife Lucretia. They are listed next to Oliver Perry Tallman and his family. Both are spelled Talman.

Elihu Tallman: I record his birth as being in Dartmouth, because it is listed in Dartmouth V R. Later New Bedford was set off from Dartmouth and had its own VR. He may have been born in the New Bedford area before it actually became New Bed Regarding the story of Elihu beginning with the "cabin boy" credit should go to "History of Wayne County," Phineas G. Goodrich, 1880 and "History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Co, Alfred Mathews 1886. (Available FHL-SLC) The complete list of children and their spouses for Elihu and Lucretia is from Wayne Co., Hist. Society. Also in a Wayne Independent newspaper article 10-31-1957, "The Tallmans of Wayne Co., by W. L. Dix, a great grandson of EIihu. (from WHS, but also found on film SLC) This article lists the death date of Lucretia as 1857! That's a mistake in the article.

Other census records record Elihu as being in: 1800 & 1810 Mt. pleasant; 1820 Buckingham, 183 0 & 1840 Preston, all Wayne Co, PA and 1850 Colesville, Broome Co, NY with an 11 year old granddaughter Eunice Stanton.

Rhoda Akin: d 23 Jun 1844, buried Tallman Farm, Schuyler, NY. (Hist Town of Schuyler); Daughter of Capt. Elihu Akin and Ruth Perry of Dartmouth.

From Ancestry.com, "Desecendants of Tunis Wells and Other Surnames", by Dave Wells:

"Came to Schuyler from New Bedford, CT about 1800.
He had 3 wives, 21 children, and 75 grandchildren according to Klock book.
Apparently Ebenezer's brother, Akin Tallman was a substitute for Ebenezer in the military during the War of 1812. He was in for about a month and a half (Oct 5 to Nov 18, 1814) and was discharged at Sackett's Harbor. Ebenezer's third wife, Maria Wheaton Tallman, applied for a pension after Ebenezer died. She claimed he went, but the War Dept rejected her claim showing that Akin went in his place. The only other possibility was that Ebenezer served some of the days and then Akin replaced him, even though Ebenezer's name was not on the rolls. Maria even applied stating that he served from Mass. I (Helen O'Connor) think she was desperate. Brother Akin received the bounty land for serving, but I think he sold it. It proves that Ebenezer's father William did not go in his place as suggested in the Wayne Co Hist Soc papers.

Came to Schhuyler from New Bedford, Connecticut about 1800. Eben had three wifes and 21 children.

There was a woman named Mary Gaines who lived at Ebenezer Tallman's after the death of one of his wives and cared for his family, either as a wife or servant, probably as a servant. No children. "

From Ancestry.com, "Desecendants of Tunis Wells and Other Surnames", by Dave Wells:

"It is likely that he may have been the child of an earlier marriage, and had been cared for by relatives when Brittain went to Dutchess Co, or that he may have left his father's house in Dutchess Co and returned to Dartmouth where his father and mother were married and he had many relatives. The family dissatisfaction over the will seems further evidence of some irregularity there.
His intention to marry is recorded Jan 8, 1774. He is referred to as William Jr. to distinguish him from another William then living in Dartmouth.

A 1790 census listing for Wm Tallman in Dartmouth shows:
male 2 < 16, 1 > 16 and 6 females
which would match with the ages of his known family at the time.
About 1796 he moved to Saratoga, New York and later to Herkimer County, New York in the Mohawk Valley, where he settled.
An 1810 census listing for Wm Talman in Schuyler, Herkimer Co shows:

No where in all my research have I seen him listed as Ebenezer William. He is plain William.

Some in Wayne Co., PA believe he died there in PA. Some in Schuyler believed he died at sea. I kind of think he died in Schuyler, (German Flats), but I have not listed this in my work.

It was passed down in my family he was born about 1750.

I doubt that he died in Saratoga Co. while his wife and family were in Schuyler, Herkimer Co., unless he actually did die in the War at Saratoga.

"A lease of 1 Aug. 1785 between Margaret B. Livingston and William Rider of Beekman describes the location of the Hustis farm. "To Rider and wife Helena. in lot 14- 356 acres adjoins Jonathan Husted, Thomas Casey, etc." A map on back- [very poor condition] shows S. line of this farm at north of lot 13 and south edge of 14. Huckleberry Hill is to lower right, Casey due north, Husted to NW. Rider assigned lease to John and Stephen Tallman in March 1794. Thomas Tripp and Thomas Tripp Jr. were witnessess. Stephen Tallman assigned his part to John Tallman and Darius Tallman was a witness.

Jonathan Huestis was sued by Johannis Tappen in 1751. [CP 21 May 1751 Page 13]. He traded at the Mabbett store in Washington Precinct 1761-63. As Husted 9sic) he is listed as having bought rum, buttons, salt, mails, sugar, check, shoes, linen, and a pocketbook. He offset his account with Lovet Head and paid his bill with butter, cheese and a firkin. As Hustis he bought run, salt, pipes, tobacco, sugar, nails, liquor, and offset with Soule and paid cash and firkins. He was also at this store in 1773: on 17 July 1773 he bought a pair of woman's shoes for 8s. On 18 Aug. 1773 he bought 3 lbs sugar for £1/2/0. On 1 Nov. 1773 he bought seed for 15s 1p. The store daybook noted: "Darius Tallman present." On 4 Nov. 1773 Jonathan Hustis Jr. charged one pair of stockings to his account, 10 shillings. The storekeeper noted: "Pay all in one month or 16 more." The entire entry was then crossed out and a small margin note reads: "carried to ?IB" (Hard to read). The next entry in the daybook is for "Jonathan Hustis Sr., per son". The account was charged for tea and tape; a total of 1s 8p. His son also charged to the account 6 Dec. 1773, a total of 3s 8p. ..."

"I took this inscription off a gravestone in a family burying place on Baptist Berkleys White Hall farm on Rh. Isld, about A. D. 1763. Collector Robinson bought the Lease about 1765 and demolished the gravestones and put them into a wall: so that all is lost. From a loose paper which I, wrote in 1763 I now copy here. This Samuel Hubbard was a Baptist Teacher, settled at Newport about 1648 and made this Eben. 1688. Intricate as it seems, more is contained on this stone than can be given in other words in so small a space. I think 1688 must be a year common to Four dates. I should suppose the stone erected Sep 27, 1688, when the wife was aged 79 and 7 mo., and Mr. Hubbard was aged 78 on May 10 that year and on 4 Jany they had been married 51 years. The 14 Vpsal 4 is the 145th Psalm and the 4th verse---'One generation shall praise thy works to another.' The B and C, I think a beautiful way of expressing lineal Descents. Thus Naomi B Rogers, I take to be Naomi Burdick who married Rogers---so Judah C Maxson was the Daughter of Bethiah Clark and it will be read Judah Clark Maxson."

At Lee, Oneida Co., Nov. 11th, 1872, Mrs. Martha Street, widow of Elisha H. Street, aged 85 years, 7 months and 57 days. The deceased was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, 1787, and moved with her husband to Lee, in this state, in the year 1808( where she continued to reside until
the time of her death. In passing through Utica and Rome at that time on their journey, they found at each place but one or two stores and a log tavern. In 1828 she buried her husband, and has remained a widow for the whole subsequent period of 44 years. Her father served in the army
during the entire Revolutionary war of 7 years. She was the mother of nine children, all of whom lived to the period of manhood or "'womanhood, excepting two who died in infancy. She survives all of her own children but three, one son and two daughters. She was grandmother to twenty three, and great grandmother to fifty children, and has one descendant living of the fourth-generation. She received her early training in the land of "steady habits," and was always strictly observant of the moralities of religion and in reverence for the Sabbath and its institutions of worship, but she did not make a public profession of religion until about 16 years since, When
she united with the Methodist church of the village of Rome. She died respected and esteemed by all who knew her for her Christian fidelity and worth. COM
