| 10401 | From the WorldTree Database: "Scalfaro-Watts Database", by Wendy Scalfaro: "The family of John Anderson, II lived in Albany, Albany Co., NY prior to moving on to Utica, Oneida Co., NY between 1850 and 1860 (possibly 1852; see city directory information). From where they originated has yet to be determined, but most likely John and Mary's parents migrated from the New England states via the Hudson Valley route to Albany. (One possible location is Connecticut, as daughter, Sarah is listed in the 1860 Census as being born there. However, the 1850 Census indicates she was born in NY). From Albany John, Mary and their family probably traveled "by rail road to Schenectady, thence by rail road or packet boats running on the Erie canal" (Munsell, 1849, p61). More likely they traveled via line boats which "afford good accommodations at a cheap rate. The usual charge for passage and board being abut one and a half cents per mile or one cent per mile without board" (Munsell, 1849, p61). Travel on the Erie Canal was restricted to the months between late April and mid-to-late December (Munsell, 1849, p329) The census and city directory information listed below provides a basic time frame from which I will work to fill in gaps. She was a member of the Union Church in Pierrepont Manor and the Belleville-Adora No. 136 Order of the Eastern Star. WOMAN ACCUSED OF KILLING HER AGED AUNT < INVESTIGATORS CHARGE DISPUTE OVER WILL WAS MOTIVE FOR DEADLY BEATING IN VICTIM'S HOME Watertown Daily Times (NY) - December 6, 1991Browse Issues Diann Louise Dodge was charged Thursday with beating her aunt to death at the victim's Pierrepont Manor home in southern Jefferson County. Beulah B. Dodge, a 75-year-old widow, was found slain by a friend, Jeannette Cobb, Oct. 24. The niece, a 49-year-old Rome resident, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in a sealed indictment unveiled in Jefferson County Court. One count accuses Miss Dodge of intentional murder. The other charges reckless murder, with depraved indifference to life. Police arrested Diann Dodge at her home Wednesday night after a sealed indictment returned earlier in the day by a Jefferson County grand jury. Judge Lee Clary ordered her held without bail pending discussions with District Attorney Gary W. Miles and her attorney, Louis T. Brindisi of Utica, who was not in court Thursday. The indictment charges that on Oct. 23 she "did strike (Beulah Dodge) repeatedly about the face and head with a blunt object, resulting in her death from blunt cranial trauma." Mr. Miles would not identify the weapon Thursday. The prosecutor conceded that the case against Miss Dodge, who has no known criminal history, is circumstantial. But the district attorney cited how "extensive" statements the suspect made to police had led investigators to follow further leads. He said he could place her at the time and the place of the aunt's death. In fact, Mr. Miles said, police had interviewed her three times, apparently immediately after the murder. Jefferson County Sheriff's Lt. Edward V. Simser declined to comment on unconfirmed reports that a flatiron was the weapon and the suspect's car was seen at the victim's house the day of the murder. Neither Mr. Miles nor Lt. Simser would comment directly about the motive. "Since Biblical times, family members have been doing harm to other family members," Lt. Simser said. However, a source confided the motive apparently is tied to the victim's will. Mrs. Dodge had signed a will on Oct. 18, six days before her death. Police have declined to comment on the contents of any prior will. In the Oct. 18 will, Mrs. Dodge left the bulk of her estate, valued at $250,000 a year before, to Diann Dodge and four other nieces or nephews. Another 12 grandnephews and grandnieces were each slated $2,000, and another $3,000 was listed for three charities. The final value put on Mrs. Dodge's estate was still unknown as of Thursday. However, her late husband, Roy C. Dodge, who died Dec. 20, had $249,841 in assets listed in his estate left for his wife. The suspect is a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Morrisville College of Technology and the Cortland Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed at the Cortland hospital following her graduation there.
