| 1060 | Aged Kingston Resident Dies Margaret Bennett Smith Was Descendant of Early Settlers Mrs Margaret Bennett Smith, 81, descendant of two families among the earliest to settle in Wyoming Valley before the Revolutionary War and widow of J. Bennett Smith, historian and prominent resident, died last night at 10:15 at her home, 280 Chestnut Avenue, Kingston, following a brief illness Deceased was born in Wilkes-Barre on July 13, 1860, and before marriage was Margaret Moister Bennett, daughter of Silas W. Bennett, whose ancestor Ishmael Bennett, was among the early settlers here. On her mother’s side, deceased was a descendant of Rev. Roger Moister, one of the first ministers to preach in the small settlement established here by former Connecticut residents. Mrs. Smith was married first in 1890 to Michael Scott of this city, who died in 1892. In September 1900, she was married to J. Bennett Smith, a cousin on her father’s side. He died in 1920. She was a member of Kingston Presbyterian Church and took an active interest in church and civic affairs in Kingston for more than a half-century. Surviving is a daughter, Margaret Bennett Scott, at home and two step-children, A. Dewitt Smith of Philadelphia and Mrs, George W. Lewis. Mrs. Delong was a member of Fernwood Methodist church and was well known in Fernwood and Sandy Creek. She was a member of the Central Square Community Church, M.I.A. Senior Group, and the Choraliers. Agnes was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of 66 years, Avery; two sisters, Fannie White and Pauline Brandt; daughter and son-in-law, Marlea (Gerald) Stannard; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Slater; and two grandsons, James Kingsley and Steven Kingsley. She is the granddaughter of John and Viola Walsh, Wilkes-Barre; Linda Hartman, Hanover Township and Robert and Risa Kehl, Berwick. The groom is the son of Mark and Patricia Girmen, Hanover Township. He is the grandson of Gertrude Girmen and the late Edward Girmen, Wilkes-Barre; Jean Casey and the late Thomas Casey, Plymouth. The bride was escorted down the aisle and given in marriage by her father. She was joined by maid of honor and best friend, Kristina Naveira, and bridesmaids, Kate Matta, friend of the bride, and Gina Goyne, cousin of the bride. Flower girls were Kiera Walsh, cousin of the bride, and Cassidy Girmen, niece. The groom chose his brother, Ryan Girmen, as best man. Coming to this country with her husband about twelve years ago, they first settled in the adjoining town of Ellisburg, where they lived until last year. Mrs. Colwell was of Protestant ancestry and became converted and connected with the Primitive Methodist church in early life. She has lived a consistent life, beloved by her family, respected by all who knew her. Eleven children, ten of whom are married, mourn the loss of this faithful mother. Alan was married to his wife, Joyce Ellison Hager in 1995 and she passed away May 24, 2017. He was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation for 32 years, retiring in 2000. Alan was a member of the NRA. Carole was an Emergency Medical Technician for the Grand River Ambulance for a long time prior to her illness. She was a member of Gentryville Baptist Church, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and the Officers Wives Club at Port Hueneme. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David L. Havner; daughter, Debra Havner; sister, Donna Jean Amerson; and great-grandchild, Mayetta Stout. Mr. Maltby was born in this town the 14th day of September, 1827, and the whole of his nearly 81 years have been spent in his native town, and most of that long life has been spent on Lake street where he died. Mr. Maltby had been an active businessman, engaged in building and mechanical work up to within the past five or six years. He was twice married, his first wife being Helen Doane, from which union issued three children, a son, Bernice, who died in young manhood, a daughter, Lettie, who died in childhood, and Flora, who died in young womanhood. His second marriage was with Mrs. Mary Murdock, who survives him, also a grandson, Fred Maltby, of Wisconsin, two brothers, R. R. Maltby, of Washington, Kentucky, Chauncey Maltby, of Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Brewer, of La Porte, Texas, and Mrs. Alfonso Houston, of Wisconsin, and a half-sister, Mrs. Rose Trumble, of Sandy Creek. Early in life Mr. Maltby united with the Congregational church and at the time of his death was the oldest member on the roll, having been connected with the society over fifty years. For many years Mr. Maltby was a leader in the choir and in every way stood by the church and assisted in a manner which showed his love for the institution. Horton, 91, retired farmer, died in Rochester, Wednesday night, January 28, at 9:00 p.m. after an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Horton, who has been living with his daughter, Mrs. Gerald De Lancett, 139 Haley Street, Watertown, for the past few years, had gone to Rochester to spend the Christmas holidays with his two daughters there, Mrs. Helen Edwards and Mrs. George Baker. While in Rochester, he fell and broke his hip and was unable to return to Watertown. Funeral services were held at the Foster funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Rev. Robert W. Anthony, pastor of the first Methodist Church of Watertown, officiating. The body was placed in the vault to await burial in the Richland Cemetery in the spring. Mr. Horton was born near Smithville, February 7, 1856 and would've been 92 this Saturday. He was the son of the late John Henry and Nancy Harris Horton. He was married to Ms. Helen Milton on Thanksgiving day in 1882 in the Pulaski Methodist Church. They resided on a farm near here until they retired from farming, and moved into town. Mr. Horton was employed at the old Tollner Box factory for several years. Following Mrs. Horton's death, he had made his home with his children. Surviving are her five daughters, Mrs. De Lancett, Mrs. George A. Brown, 410 Dimmick Street, Watertown; Mrs. Wesley Bowerman, Mann, Florida, and Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Barker of Rochester. He served in Fairport, Ohio, for a number of years and was Captain in charge of the station at Fort Niagara for 15 years. He retired in April, 1923, moving to Orwell in 1924. After the death of his wife he came to Pulaski where he made his home on North street road. He married Pauline Chamberlain. She died in 1998. Mr. Frank lived in Altmar and Pulaski before moving to Williamstown in 1990. Surviving are his companion, Laving Johnson, Williamstown, and two sons, Harlan E., Pulaski, and Rick L., Altmar. A son, Walter D., died in 2002. | 1083 | Albert E. Lester was born in 1851 on his parent's farm in Boylston,Oswego County, NY, about 10 miles from the shores of Lake Ontario. His father Samuel, along with grandparents James and Olive, came from Columbia county in eastern NYS to settle in the western Oswego County area 20 years before Albert's birth. He married Albert's mother Mary Jane and settled in her home county of Oswego where they raised their family. His father Samuel and Albert's two older brothers went off to fight with the Union Army about 1862; leaving Albert and brother Loren, along with their elderly grandfather James the "men of the house". By war's end both Albert's mother, Mary Jane and grandmother Olive had died. He worked carpentry jobs about town with his brother Levi until they both decided to head west for a new start. Levi took his young family and settled in Kansas. Albert worked his way through Minnesota and finally settled in Dunn County Wisconsin where he wed Mary E. Rightman in 1883 and raised her daughter Jennie and the seven more children born to them. In 1901 Albert's wife left him to marry another and had a son in 1903. She died of unknown causes in 1908. In 1910 and 1911 Albert lived on a land claim outside of Sidney, Montana, near the Yellowstone River where his daughter Phoebe and husband Archie Kirkland also claimed land. The Kirklands stayed in Montana, but Albert returned to Wisconsin by 1920. He died in 1931 as a resident of a county home for the infirmed. | Lester, Albert E (I70314)

Mowry, of Oswego, died suddenly at one o'clock Saturday morning at Clifton Springs Sanitarium, where he has been for the past four weeks taking treatment. The deceased has not been in the best of health for the past year and he has visited the sanitarium several times for treatment. He had planned on returning to his home Monday, as he stated in a letter to his brother that he was somewhat improved. He was taken with stroke late Friday afternoon and he sank rapidly during the night until death came at an early hour Saturday morning. Mr. Mowry was born at Mowry's Corners in the town of Richland, in 1861, but he has been practically a life long resident of Oswego. He graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1880 and accepted a position in the store of T. M. Costello in Altmar, where he remained several years, during which time he was married to Miss Josephine Rich. He then went to Alexandria Bay, where he clerked in a store for a short time. In 1886 he accepted a position as inspector in the service of the Oswego Water Works Company, where he remained for two years. Mr. Mowry succeeded H. J. Churchill in the office of W. K. Niver & Company. In 1890 he was promoted to manager of the Oswego branch. Seven years ago he purchased the agency from the Niver Company. The deceased was a member of several fraternal organizations, the Elks and Masons. He was Exalted Ruler of the Elks for several years and was prominent in that organization. Lewis, 55, of Orwell, were held from the family home Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Wesley Baker, pastor of the Orwell Community Church officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Lillis died at the Oswego County Sanatorium Wednesday, where he had been a patient two months. He had been employed at the sanitarium for the past 12 years. Stevens, Navy Veteran Albert M. Stevens, 84, Pulaski, died Wednesday at Community-General Hospital, Syracuse. Mr. Stevens served with the Navy from 1927 to 1950 and was a veteran of World War II. He was a civilian employee with San Diego Naval Yards, California, for several years and moved to the Pulaski area in 1974. Born March 12, 1912 [sic], in Marshall, a son of Ernest and Grace Anderson Stevens, he married Mae E. Rose Stevens on August 10, 1974. Mrs. Stevens died October 1, 1994. Surviving are four stepsons, Ernest O. Stevens, Pulaski, the Rev. Carrie F. Stevens, Mexico, Norman J. Stevens, Lacona, and Wayne A. Stevens, Syracuse; two step-daughters, Barbara A. White, Pulaski, and LouAnn Hedger, Adams, 21 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A brother, Orville Stevens, died June 7, 1960. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, with the Rev. Lorraine Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Orwell.
