Obituary Condolences
Martineau November 10, 2005 H. Robert "Zeke" Martineau died Friday, November 10, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 13 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Zeke was born November 17, 1931 in Syracuse, NY to Harold A. and Gertrude W. Martineau and graduated from Most Holy Rosary High School in 1949. He attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, then served four years in the U.S. Navy before returning his hometown to attend Syracuse University. He graduated in 1959 with a bachelor of science in business administration. His professional career started at the Herald-Journal newspaper in advertising sales; he then moved to Mobil Oil as a commercial salesman. He left upstate New York in 1966 to take a position at Mobil's corporate headquarters in New York City. Zeke later moved to Greensboro, NC and started his own business in 1980. He retired in 2000, spending much of his time traveling; volunteering at his church, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, where he was involved with the Knights of Columbus and his Small Church Community; working in his yard and enjoying his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judith Lambert Martineau; his two daughters, Suzanne M. Rook and her husband, Tony, of Wake Forest and Kathryn M. Adams and her husband, Clay, of Astoria, N.Y.; five sons, Andrew and his wife, Kathy, of Plano, Texas; Daniel and his wife, Elaine; William and his wife, Stacy; James and his wife, Jennifer; Matthew, and his wife, Kristian, all of Greensboro; 17 grandchildren, Bob, Andy and Meghan Rook, all of Wake Forest; Drew, Patrick, Jacob and Tim Martineau, all of Plano, Texas; Joseph, Michael, Sean, Paul, Sophie, Sarah, Christopher, Grace, Eric and Elise Martineau, all of Greensboro; and numerous other beloved relatives and friends.

Cross, died at the Williams Nursing home, in Pulaski Monday night, February 2, 1953. She was born in the town of Worth July 22, 1879, daughter of Albert and Delilah Brown Gardner. She was married March 4, 1901, to William Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson came to Pulaski and conducted a grocery store in Salina Street, until his death October 13, 1922. Later she married Mr. Cross who died in January, 1947. She was a member of the Pulaski Methodist Church. She has 53 direct survivors, including one son, Donald Johnson, Fulton; six daughters, Mrs. Rita Wheelock, Cicero; Mrs. Ethel Martinet, Watertown; Mrs. Hazel Alger, North Syracuse; Mrs. Doris Hutt, Whitesboro; Mrs. Loletta Davey, Altmar; Mrs. Dona Davies, Pulaski; 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Foster funeral home, Pulaski, February 5. Services were conducted by Rev. James N. Pauley, pastor of Methodist Church, and I burial will be in Willis cemetery.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 26, 1916 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. Hannah Babcock - Mrs. Hannah M. Mabcock [sic], relict of Charles Babcock, passed away suddenly Saturday morning, April 22nd, from heart disease. At seven o'clock her son, Fred Babcock, went to her home, but did not enter the house because the door was locked. This did not alarm him as he thought she might be dressing and he went to his mill as usual. At one o'clock he again went to her house and on finding the door still locked, he entered a window, discovered her lying dead on the floor near the door. It is supposed when she heard him at the door, that she hurried from the kitchen, where she had been preparing her breakfast, to open the door for him, but died just as she reached the door. Mrs. Babcock, who was about seventy years of age is survived by her son Fred Babcock, two grandchildren, two sisters, nieces and a nephew. For many years Mrs. Babcock has been a member of Orwell Grange and was nearly always present at the meetings. The funeral services were held in the church, Tuesday afternoon and burial made beside her husband in Evergreen Cemetery.

Harlan was born November 23, 1945 in Pulaski, the son of Albert and Pauline Chamberlain Frank. He attended Pulaski Schools. Harlan was employed by Hess in Syracuse for 22 years, retiring in 2006. He had previously been employed as a driver for Montgomery Ward for 15 years. Harlan was a member of Teamsters Local #317.
Surviving are his companion, Terri O'Neill, one son, Todd Frank (Mary Scranton) of Pulaski, one daughter, Tammie Wilson (Bill Whaley) of Pulaski, one brother, Rick (Cristina) Frank of Altmar, three grandchildren, Cody and Callie Wilson and Meagan Frank. Harlan was predeceased by one brother, Walt.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1st, the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski, with burial at the convenience of the family. No funeral service will be held.

Harley E. Willis, 102, formerly of 710 Barnes Ave., died Tuesday at Loretto.

A native of Tully, Mr. Willis resided most of his life in Syracuse. He was president of The Valley Press.

Mr. Willis was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Konosioni Lodge 950, F&AM. He was founding member of the Valley Men's Club.

Surviving are a son, Daniel E. of Camillus; two daughters, Olive Craw and Mildred Waddell, both of Syracuse; a sister, Gladys Flansberg of Cortland; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home. Burial will be in Onondaga Valley Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 4612 S. Salina St.

Mr. Mellen was employed by the Richland Town Highway Department for 35 years, retiring in 1988. He previously worked at the Oliver Loomis farm for several years. Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Ellisburg, son of Albert and Sylvia Sprague Mellen, he attended Ellisburg schools and had resided in Pulaski since 1945. He married Phyllis V. Ladd on Aug. 5, 1948. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Donald, Orwell; three daughters, Delores Sikora and Dorothy Atkinson, both of Pulaski, and Diane Pike, Oak Harbor, Wash.; three sisters, Marie Mills and Arlene Algarin, both of Phoenix, and Marion Cox, Syracuse; two brothers, Mervin Mellen, Three Mile Bay, and Clarence Presley, Woodville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski, with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry officiating. Burial will be in Daysville Cemetery.

Harley Scribner, 92, of 6253 18th St. N., St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Oneida Castle, died Thursday. He was born in Vernon. He was a machinist for the former National Casket Co. He was a member of Cochran Memorial Presbyterian Church, Sherrill-Sconondoa Masonic Lodge 814, Vernon, and the Oneida Castle Fire Department. His first wife, Lillian, died in 1978.

Newark Valley: Harold A. 'Mike' Mowers, 94, passed away on Nov. 10, 2011 following a brief illness.

'Mike' was born on Dec 26, 1916 in Altmar, NY, the youngest of the 9 children born to George L. and Myrtle Wait Mowers. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his siblings and his wife Greta Berry. Mike is survived by his sons, Jerry and Jim Mowers and his grandchildren Tina, Cameron, James, Pearl, and Jovan. As a young man, Mike was employed by NY Central Railroad as a fireman and engineer and then during WW2, he served with the US Coast Guard. He later was employed as an Ironworker with Local Union 60, Syracuse and retired following 25 years of service.

Graveside services will be held at the Nichols Cemetery at 10 am on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011. Pastor Donna Martin will officiate. MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley is assisting the family with arrangements. Memories and condolences may be shared in his guestbook at macphersonfh.com

Harold A. "Pete" Gilson Jr., 80, of 36 North St., died Thursday at his home.

Mr. Gilson retired in 1981 after 14 years as a machinist at P&K Manufacturing, now Metal Tech, and previously had been a bartender at the former Log Cabin Restaurant. He also was a carpenter for several area contractors for many years.

He lived in Pulaski most of his life and was a member of Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7289. He also was a former Little League coach and the mascot and a player for the Pulaski Panthers Baseball Team. He enjoyed hunting.

Born Oct. 8, 1921, at Oswego, son of Harold A. Sr. and Luella Allen Gilson, he graduated in 1940 from Pulaski Academy and Central School in its first graduating class since centralization.

He served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 aboard the USS LST 577 in the Pacific theater.

He married Geraldine Simser on Aug. 21, 1948, at Pulaski Methodist parsonage with the Rev. James N. Pauley officiating. She died April 7, 1996.

Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie L. Loomis, Pulaski; three sons, Gary A., Scriba, Edward A., Pulaski, and Terry J., Lacona, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Harold A. Gilson, 87, of 7405 Port Street, Pulaski, died Thursday evening, September 22, 1983, in Oswego Hospital where he had been admitted that morning.

Born May 20, 1896 at New. Haven a son of Willard and Eva Adams Gilson, he was graduated from Mexico Academy High School and married Louella Allen. She died Sept. 22, 1970, 13 years to the day, prior to Mr. Gilson's death.

Mr. Gilson married Lula Vincent April 20, 1971.

He had owned and operated the Port Ontario Bait Shop and worked several years for the Oswego County Highway Department, retiring in 1968.

He was a member of Pulaski Lodge 648 I.O.O.F., and was a past member and president of the Ringgold Fire Department and a former member of the Albion Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife, Lula; a son, Harold A. Jr., Pulaski; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Erwin and Donald Vincent, Fulton; 11 step-grandchildren and several step-greatgrandchildren.

A private funeral was held Monday at the Foster-Hax Funeral
Home, Pulaski, with Rev. Virgil Hager, pastor of First Baptist Church, Sandy Creek, officiating.

Burial was in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood.

10841 Harold Abel, 97, Sarasota, died Oct. 31, 2002. He was born Dec. 21, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to Sarasota in 1969, from Albany, N.Y. He retired as director of recreation for the state of New York, Department of Mental Health. He served as a board member of Sapphire Shores Community Association and was a life member of the Sarasota Succulent Society.
He graduated from Syracuse University with bachelor's degrees. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Viola; a daughter, Audrey Adam of Stonington, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Frances M. Sullivan of Dunedin; a stepson, John P. McGrath of Farmington, Conn.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Fernwood United Methodist Church and the South Richland Grange. He was active in commercial and fraternal bowling leagues in Pulaski and was a hunter and fisherman. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Calkins Nicholson; a son, Hugh Nicholson; a daughter, Mrs. Beverly Scott of Pulaski; a sister, Mrs. Florence Hager, Pulaski; a brother, Harry L. HAROLD CARL MILLER WAS BORN AUG. 7, 1933, THE SON OF ARCHIE AND ANNA (KINGSMAN) MILLER, IN GREAT BEND, N.Y. HE GREW UP AND ATTENDED SCHOOLS IN NEW YORK STATE. HE JOINED THE U.S. AIR FORCE AND SERVED IN KOREA AND VIETNAM. HE RETIRED ON SEPT. 30, 1972, AFTER 20 YEARS OF ACTIVE DUTY. HE LIVED IN EMERADO AFTER HIS DISCHARGE.

HE IS SURVIVED BY NIECES AND NEPHEWS.

HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY BROTHERS, ROBERT AND DONALD; HALF SISTERS, GLADYS HEWITT AND IDA MAE MILLER; AND A HALF BROTHER, CLIFFORD CLARK.

Newspaper Obituary - November 20, 1918 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Harold Clayton Butterworth Dies At Camp Wheeler - Harold Clayton Butterworth, aged 24 years, a native of the town of Albion, died at Camp Wheeler, Macon, Georgia, Monday, November 11. His body was brought to Pulaski and later taken to the family home in Albion, where funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Walter Clement, of Richland officiating. Harold C. Butterworth was son of Mr. and Mrs. Deforest Butterworth, of the town of Albion. He had worked about this village for the past few years and had many friends here. October 24th he went from Pulaski with the contingent of drafted men who left on that date. He was taken ill soon after arriving at Macon and pneumonia developed in a most serious form, which caused his death. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Carl, of Syracuse; Percy and Isaac of Albion. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery.

Harold "Gink" P. DeRycke February 4, 2023 Harold "Gink" DeRycke, 87, of Clay, NY passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023. Harold was born August 17, 1935 in North Syracuse, NY, to Charles DeRycke, Sr. and Grace (Murphy) DeRycke. At age 9, Harold's family moved to Clay where he was a farmer from early on. He was expected to do haying with his brothers at his grandparents' Murphy and DeRycke Farms. Harold graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1953 and joined the 138th Air National Guard (now the 174th) for 7 years and left as a Staff Sargent. Harold married his high school sweetheart Earleen Mae (Loura) DeRycke on September 29, 1956, celebrating 66 years of marriage in 2022. Harold followed in the family trade; he owned his own business, Harold DeRycke Hardwood Floors, where he installed and refinished hardwood floors. He became very well known in the CNY area because of his excellent work and his work ethic. Harold received his pilot's license and he owned several aircraft. He enjoyed flying around Central New York. Harold owned a camp at Moon Beach in Sterling, NY and he enjoyed swimming and fishing in Lake Ontario with his family. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Eugene; son-in-law, John Chomyszak; grandson, Keith Smith; brothers, Robert and Charles (Bud) DeRycke; sister, Margaret Nesbitt and nephew, Douglas DeRycke. Harold is survived by his wife, Earleen; children, Loretta Chomyszak, Vincent (Roseann) DeRycke and Colleen (Edward) Smith; brother, Richard (Dennis) DeRycke of Maryland; sisters, Betty Dulaney of New Jersey and Eileen DeRycke of Phoenix, NY; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Harold E. Spath Sr., 81, of 27 Broad St., died Wednesday at his home.

Mr. Spath retired from the architectural, engineering and planning firm of Sargent, Webster, Crenshaw & Folley, Syracuse, in 1984.

Since his retirement, he had been clerk of works for Hancock Airport, Syracuse, the Liverpool School System, Cato-Meridan Central School and the Development Authority of the North Country.

Born July 14, 1920, in Richland, son of Herbert J. and Hazel DeGraw Spath, he was a 1938 graduate of Pulaski High School and became a certified electrical engineer in 1939 at Coyne Electrical School, Chicago, Ill. He attended Loyola University, Chicago, and Syracuse University.

He married Elizabeth Rowell on May 27, 1940. Mrs. Spath died Jan. 10, 1987.

Mr. Spath was a member of the Gem and Mineral Society of Syracuse, the Lions Club and the Grange, and a member and officer of the U.S. Power Squadron. He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are four sons, H. Edwin Spath Jr., Centre Hall, Pa., Leon Rowell Spath, Queensbury, Bruce Wayne Spath, Virndorf, Germany, and Douglas Franklin Spath, Mount Joy, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. John (Ruthann) Tanner, Lacona; three sisters, Jacqueline Gallagher and Beverly Duerr, both of Pulaski, and Joyce Barclay, Syracuse; a brother, Herbert James Spath, address unknown, 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taylor-Vida Funeral Home with lay minister David Tanner officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the U.S. Power Squadron, Watertown.

MUNNSVILLE - Harold E. Thurston, 82, of 5256 Park St., Munnsville, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 28, 2007, at his home, with his loving family at his side.

He was born on Nov. 14, 1924 in Stockbridge, the son of Irving and Flossie Trew Thurston.

Harold spent his early years in the Munnsville area, later living in Whitelaw and moving back to Munnsville in 1964. He was a graduate of Stockbridge Valley High School.

He worked for Oneida Ltd. in Sherrill for 30 years, retiring in 1987.

Harold was a member and a former deacon of the Morrisville Community Church. He was also a member of the Munnsville Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years and a member of the Madison County Fire Police and the Stockbridge Ruritans.

He was a World War II veteran, serving overseas with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wedderburn.

Harold was an avid bowler and enjoyed birds and gardening. He loved spending time with his family and attending all of his grandchildren's activities.

He was united in marriage to Lois A. Walters on July 24, 1948 at the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church. They had recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Surviving besides his wife, Lois, are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harold E. Thurston Jr., of East Weymouth, Mass., and Darrell and Kristi Thurston of Sherrill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Richard Turrell of North Norwich, and Shelia and David Bartlett of Munnsville; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Clinton and Ruth Thurston of Canastota, Gene and Grace Thurston of Allegany, N.Y., and Maebelle Thurston of Munnsville; 12 grandchildren, Jessica Thurston, Kelly Thurston, Michael Thurston, Matthew Thurston, James Turrell, Lauren Turrell, Nathan Turrell, Gabrielle Bartlett, Dru Bartlett, Louisa Bartlett, Connor Bartlett and Devin Bartlett; and several nieces and nephews.

Harold was predeceased by two brothers, Herman Thurston and Merton Thurston.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., Canastota. The Rev. Russell S. Duncan, pastor of the Morrisville Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held Friday (tomorrow) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home, 201 James Street, Canastota. Wing, 89, of 2728 County Route 2, died Thursday at his home, where he was under the care of his family and Oswego County Hospice. Mr. Wing owned and operated Sancona Builders Supply in Sandy Creek from 1951 until retiring in 1978. He also operated a poultry farm in Richland for 30 years. Born August 29, 1915, at Tupper Lake, son of George and Elizabeth Rock Wing, he graduated from Felts Mills High School in 1933 and moved to Richland in 1936. He married Helen E. Riley on February 1, 1938, in Richland. She died February 29, 1996. He married Beulah Delano Hobbs Jacobs on July 14, 1996. Mr. Wing received a pilot's license in 1945 and flew his plane out of the Richland Airport. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 362, Pulaski Masonic Lodge 415 and Royal Arch Masons, and was sexton for 20 years of Richland Cemetery. Surviving besides his wife are three daughters and their husbands, Lucy and Robert Larkins, Copenhagen, Margaret and Laurence Sandstrom, Deland, Florida, and Carolyn and Bert Cowan, Sandy Creek; two sons and a daughter-in-law, C. James and Margaret, Pulaski, and John, and his companion, Karen Driskell, Richland; three stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Wallace and Kathleen Hobbs, Ellisburg, Leslie and Dorothy Hobbs, Adams, and Bert Hobbs, San Francisco, California; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Janet and Fred Goodnough, Ellisburg, and Marcia and Lawrence Rudd, Mannsville; 16 grandchildren, 16 step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 23 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
