In 1930 they lived on Usher Road as did George & Gertrude Brown (Celia's sister and BIL), and Hattie Scroggie. It also appears they did some foster care as they had 3 "wards" in their care all with different last names.

11662 In April, 1803, two men, William Skinner and Stephen Lindsey, came through Redfield and Boylston into the present town of Sandy Creek. The former, who was a man of considerable property, settled in the eastern part of what is now Lacona village, where, on the banks of Sandy Creek, he purchased 400 acres of land. Mr. Lindsey went on to Ellisburg, but soon settled about half a mile from Wigwam Cove in the extreme northwest corner of this town. His daughter, Eunice, then about twelve years old, died that summer and was the first white person whose death occurred in the town's present limits. Mr. Skinner had an adopted son, Levi. then five years of age, and was accompanied by two young men named Btrtler and Moreton, who lived with him through the summer and engaged in clearing land for themselves. The latter sold out to Mr. Skinner in the fall, and both he and Butler returned to Oneida county, whence the first settlers came. Mr. Skinner bought some land in Ellisburg and moved back and forth no less than seven times in two years. About 1807 he sold his Sandy Creek property to Peter Whiteside and settled permanently in Ellisburg. Skinner, William (I54732)

11667 In his Preface to the second volume of The Descendants of Thomas Durfee, William F. Reed states " That there were a large number of Durfeys ... descendants of Joseph and Ann (should be Abigail) (Buck) Durfey, which tradition claims to be descendants of Thomas Durfee. "
Abigail Buck was born June 28, 1732, in Somers, Tolland County, CT. Her death date and place are not certain. A family group sheet in the LDS Library in Salt Lake City states that Abigail (Buck) Durfey died June 9, 1774. I have found no record of her death and suspect that this is probably wrong.
Abigail and her brother Jedediah were baptized in Somers on April 4, 1735. From the History of Enfield, by Allen. Three Volumes. Volume 3, page 2179.
The birth's of Abigail Buck and her brother Jedediah, and the identity of their parents are from Morris' Felt Genealogy on page 57. The birth's of Abigail and Jedediah Buck are also recorded in the Somers, Tolland County, CT, Births Book 1, page 1. The marriage of Ebenezer Buck and Abigail Felt, of Enfield, was recorded in the Enfield, Hartford County, CT, Marriages Book 1A, page 101. Ebenezer Buck was a soldier on an expedition to Cuba when he died. Somers Deaths Book 1, page 47. It is assumed that this refers to Abigail's father but it could be her brother.
On August 8, 1742, Mercy Durfey, wife of John, had their sons Joseph, James and Benjamin baptized in the Newent Congregational Church in the Newent District of Norwich, New London County, CT. In 1786 that district was set off from Norwich and incorporated as Lisbon, New London County, CT. From Newent Church Records Book 1, page 64.
Abigail Buck was a resident of Somers at the time of her marriage to Joseph.
An infant child of Joseph Durfey died July 18, 1754, in Putnam, Windham County, CT. Putnam Congregational Church Records Volume 1, pages 50 and 83. A family group sheet in the LDS Library in Salt Lake City states that Joseph had a daughter Molly born about 1753 in Killingly.
Joseph Durfey and Abigail were admitted and baptized in the Putnam, Windham County, CT, Congregational Church on March 5, 1756, by the Reverend Aaron Brown. Joseph Durfey, Junior was baptized in this church in March 1756. Church Records Volume 1, pages 45 and 74. At that time Putnam was a district in the town of Killingly.
No record of military service for Joseph in the French and Indian War has been found.
According to the Records of the Congregational Church in Canterbury on page 148, Jedediah son of Durfee was baptized October 15, 1758.
In September 1762, Joseph was voted a freeman of Canterbury, Windham County, CT. According to the Records of the Congregational Church in Canterbury on page 149, Ebenezer son of Joseph Durfee was baptized June 6, 1762.
On October 29, 1763, Joseph Durfey, of Windsor (Ellington), purchased 50 acres of land in the northeast corner of Ellington where it borders Stafford and Somers at a place later called Durfy Mountain. Windsor, CT, Deeds Book 12, page 223. That place was called Durfy Mountain for more than one hundred years. From Connecticut Place Names, by Hughes. Page 531.
On January 28, 1765, Ebenezer Buck, Abigail's father, of Somers, deeded his home farm consisting of 51acres of land in Somers to Joseph Durfey, yeoman, and his wife Abigail, both of Windsor (Ellington District). The deed was recorded March 1, 1770. Somers Deeds Book D, page 41.
On February 16, 1770, Joseph purchased two tracts of land containing about 138 acres in the northeast corner of Ellington (East Windsor at that time) from Ebenezer and Abigail Buck of Somers. This land was formerly owned by Phineas Felt. The deed was recorded February 5, 1771, in the East Windsor Deeds Book 1, page 293.
The following records of military service in the Revolutionary War are almost certainly a combination of the service of both Joseph Durfey, Senior and Joseph Durfey, Junior.
On May 22, 1775, Joseph Dursey (Durfey) enlisted as a private in the Second Company of Connecticut militia commanded by Captain George Pitkin in the Fourth Regiment commanded by Colonel Benjamin Hinman. This company served at the siege of Boston and some may have been in the battle of Bunker Hill. Joseph was discharged July 20, 1775.
On July 7, 1775, Joseph Durphy enlisted as a private in the Third Company of Connecticut militia commanded by Captain Joel Clark, in the Eight Regiment commanded by Colonel Jedediah Huntington. He served with the regiment on Long Island Sound until September 14, 1775, when the regiment was ordered to the Boston camps by George Washington. He served with the regiment in General Spencer's Brigade in Roxbury until discharged December 16, 1775.
In July 1776, Joseph Durfery enlisted as a private in Captain Wolcott's company in Lieutenant Colonel Bezaleel Beebe's regiment and served until August 1776.
From January 11, 1778, to about March 25, 1778, Joseph Durpe served as a sergeant in Captain Roswell Grant's company in Colonel Obadiah Johnson, regiment of Connecticut militia. They served in Providence, Providence County, RI.
Joseph Durpee enlisted as a sergeant in July 1778, in Captain Roswell Grant's company of Colonel Roger Enos' regiment and was discharged in November 1778. From the Records of Connecticut Men in the Revolution by the Connecticut Adjutant General. Pages 87, 540, and 618. Also found in the National Archives Revolutionary War Service Records 4261, 4262, and 4278.
On May 4, 1784, Joseph Durfy, of East Windsor, sold 25 acres of land to Joseph Durfy, Junior in the northeast corner of East Windsor bordering on town lines of Somers and Stafford, Connecticut, and on other land owned by Joseph Durfy, Junior. The deed was recorded in the East Windsor Town Hall on August 4, 1784, in Deeds Book 4 page 203. Elijah Durfey witnessed the signing of this deed. At this time Ellington was still part of East Windsor. The location of the farm is called Durfy Mountain. From Hughes' Connecticut Place Names, page 531.
On June 10, 1784, the same 25 acre tract of land was sold by Joseph Durfy, Junior to Elijah Durfy and the transaction was recorded in Deeds Book 4 page 207.
On February 9, 1785, Joseph Durfy sold land to Daniel Smith, both of East Windsor. Elijah was one of the witnesses. Deeds Book 5 page 138.
Joseph and Abigail moved to Cornwall, Addison County, Vermont about 1785-1789, and settled near their sons Jedediah and Elijah.
When the U. S. 1790 (taken in 1791) census of Cornwall, Addison County, VT, was taken Joseph Durphy was living near his sons Elijah and Jedediah and his family was 1 male over 16 and 1 female over 16.
Joseph Durfey," father of Jedediah " died in Cornwall, Addison County, VT, June 4, 1794. From the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier.
When the 1800 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Jedediah had a female over 45 years of age living with him. That woman was probably his widowed mother. An Abigail Durfey was involved in a land transfer in Ripton, Addison County, VT, about 1805. She may have been Abigail (Buck) Durfey.
On the U. S. 1850 mortality census of Tolland County, CT, there was listed Rebecca Durfey, a pauper, born in 1789 and died in Tolland County in November 1849. It is not known what relationship, if any, there was between her and Joseph's family.
In 1985, Mrs. Vilate (Durfee) McBride, Bountiful, Davis County, UT, sent me photo copies of pages 154-157, and pages 178-181 from a book authored by Archibald Bennett, bearing the title The Later-Day Saints Family, The Family Group Record. The book is about genealogical research for religious purposes and the reason that it is of interest is that the author elected to use the descendants of John Durfey to illustrate the correct method of researching ancestors. He cautioned researchers that there are many errors in the Archives and that all information should be verified. In Chapter Forty-three, "Records Truly Made Out", the author states that records, dated 1913, in the Archives (Morman Church baptism and endowment records) for John Durfey and Miss Foster state that John was born about 1715, in Ireland and Miss Foster was born about 1717, in England. He further stated that their children were John of Rhode Island, James of Rhode Island, Joseph Durfey who married Abigail Buck, Benjamin, born in Connecticut, and Molly, born in Connecticut, who married Ebenezer Dean (Dain). Archibald did not give the name of the person who prepared the sheet nor did he give that person's sources.
