Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 22, 1891 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - South Richland - Died at his home in South Richland, January 16th, 1891 Mr. Adonijah Barnard, 80 aged years. Deceased moved from Oneida county where he was born and always lived until twenty six years ago, when he bought the place where he has since lived and died. Mr. B was an honest, upright, Christian man, giving his heart to God in early manhood and always acknowledging God in everything as the giver and doer of all. He was the last of a family of eleven children and had out lived the rest of the family by a score of years. He has been gradually failing; twice before he has had {slight shocks but the third proved too much for his already feeble body and unconsciously he lingered just one week until his quiet spirit heard the "Come and enter in," and the pearly gates were ajar and Angels bid him welcome. There will be no more trials, no more suffering, no more waiting and longing. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Whipple on the 18th at the M. E. church, of which he had been for years a faithful member, also he has held many, and even all, the offices which the church requires. Interment at the Willis cemetery. An aged companion, one son, Mr. M. Barnard, Mrs. C. H. Hicks, of this place, and Mrs. J. W. Pride, of Utica, are left of his family to miss and mourn a kind earthly father. Among those who were present at the funeral from out of town were J. W. Pride and wife, of Pulaski; W. H. Tifft and wife, of Sandy Creek; J. M. Potter and wife, of Orwell.

11953 January 16, 1906 ~ Charles F. Russell, age 75 years, 6 months, Married, Farmer, born in New York, Resident of Richland Township for 70 years, Son of Jacob Russell born in Maine, and Sophia Stork born in Maine, Died in Richland Township of paralysis of the heart, old age.

Newspaper Obituary - January 24, 1906 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - It is our painful duty to record the sudden death of one of the oldest inhabitants of this town. Charles F. Russell was born at Verona, Oneida county, July 5, 1830 and moved with his parents, Jacob Russell and Sophia Stark Russell, and his brother William, to the town of Richland, Oswego county, when he was about four years of age. They came most of the way by blazed trees and settled on the farm now owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Soules, one mile south of Daysville. Two years later Lydia Russell, a sister, was born in the old log house which his father had erected in this wilderness as a home. This log house like many others had the large old-fashioned fire place and great back logs were drawn in with an oxen team. Jacob Russell, his father, was a down east Yankee from the state of Maine, a millwright by trade and an 1812 soldier, who walked from his home in Oneida county to Sacket's Harbor to enlist for his country. His mother, Sophia Stark, was a granddaughter of General Stark of Revolutionary fame. After moving to Daysville many water mills were built by him on the streams in that vicinity. Charles and William helped their father clear and log the land, as it was called, and much timber, which today would be very valuable, was burned in great log heaps to fit the land for crops. On the stream which runs through the place was what was called a "deer lick", where wild deer came to lick up the salt and drink from the pure spring waters of Snake Creek. Since that time great changes have taken place in the country. Blazed trees have passed away and the forest where these early pioneers toiled has been transformed into a thickly settled farming country. After becoming of age, Charles engaged in the cattle business with profit handling many thousand dollars-worth of cattle and sheep, importing many boat loads from Canada in company with Simon Davis and driving large droves to Pennsylvania. He was married to Mrs. Abbie A. Norton, February 5, 1868 and three sons, Fred D., German C. and Orren J. Russell, were born to them. Fred and German died in infancy and Orren J. now resides with his mother at Port Ontario, where they moved from Daysville in 1888. Mr. Russell's health has been steadily declining for some time past but he was an honest and industrious man and with that determination which has characterized his whole life, he would not give up working and at the time of his death on Tuesday, January 16, seemed to be in usual health. He ate a hearty dinner and going to the barn backed out a horse and starting to lead it to the house dropped dead. Dr. Low was summoned but it was of no avail. Coroner Hollis was summoned and decided that death was due to paralysis of the heart. The funeral was held from his late home in Port Ontario, at 1 p.m., January 19, 1906. The services were conducted by the Rev. B. DeForest Snyder. Burial was in the Willis cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by sorrowing friends and neighbors and the members of Lake Ontario Association P. of I., No. 794, who attended in a body to pay their last tribute to a deceased brother. A beautiful wreath of roses, carnations and hyacinth was tenderly placed upon the casket by the lodge also a cycle furnished by Albert White, which he has had twenty-five years, a sheaf of wheat from county President L. C. Cole, a cycle indicating the age, seventy-five years, from Mr. and Mrs. Place, white carnations from Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Plummer and the family all telling the love and respect in which he was held. He leaves to mourn his loss besides the widow, Abbie A., and son Orren, two nieces at Daysville, Mrs. Fred Soules and Miss Lydia Russell, a sister, Mrs. Lydia Twitchell and two sons, Fred C. Twitchell and Will Twitchell, of Alameda, California, and a step-son, L. J. Norton, of Napa, California.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, January 27, 1897 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - The sad news spread through the community, last Wednesday evening that Francis H. Mahaffy had expired. He was taken sick the Friday previous and so short in duration was his sickness that many of his dear friends were not aware that he was dangerously ill. His death is regretted by a great circle of friends. His funeral held at the M. E. church, last Saturday afternoon, was largely attended. The Masons, Grand Army, Firemen attended as organizations. Rev. A. D. Webster gave a memorial address, the Masons conducted their burial service in the Grand Army officiated at the grave. The following is from the address delivered by Mr. Webster: "Francis H. Mahaffy was born in Pulaski, January 10, 1845, and that his death was just a little over 52 years of age. He was one of a family of seven children, five of whom are living, three brothers and two sisters, well known in this community. He was only 16 years of age when the war broke out. His older brother, Samuel, enlisted in 1862, and died at New Orleans, Mississippi, August 25, 1863. At that time it was impossible to obtain his body, that it might be brought home and buried among friends, but his funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. H. Lamb in this house, a little over 33 years ago. On that sad, sad day no member of the family was a more sincere mourner than Frank, as he has always been familiarly called. March 8, 1865, being a little over 19 years old at the time, he enlisted in Company I, 193 New York Volunteers and he was discharged as sergeant January 18, 1866. He was stationed most of the time of his service in the forts about Harper's Ferry. Comrade Julius Macy, of this place, and Lyman Learned of South Richland, as well as others from the town of Sandy Creek, were in the same company. On June 6, 1883 he was joined in marriage to Miss Isabella Bruce. To them were born two daughters, who are now respectively 10 and 5 years of age. He was a member of Pulaski Lodge No. 415, F. & A. M. He was also a member of J. B. Butler Post No. 111, G. A. R., of which he had just been installed as Senior Vice Commander. He has been for some time a member of the Relief Committee of the Post, and in all calls for help from needy soldiers for their families, or any claims which were presented, his sympathies were a large and beneficent, and nothing but the lack of funds, or an adverse decision on the part of the other members of the committee could withhold the desired aid.

A summons to the house of mourning has again called us together, and as we are about to attend the funeral obsequies of brother Gilbert L. Cross, it is fitting that some expression of our sorrow at his untimely death should be entered in the minutes of our Lodge,

Brother Cross died at his residence in Pulaski, on Thursday evening, Jan'y 23d, after a brief and painful illness.

For several years after he became a member of our fraternity, he was soon interested in the welfare of our order, and was faithful in the discharge of his Masonic duties.

We recall with pleasure his pleasant disposition, his unfailing kindness and his willingness always to assist in worthy and charitable objects. Generosity, kindness, sympathy and courtesy were prominent traits of his character.

As we remember that "to err is human, to forgive is divine," let the brethren who survive, cover his frailties with the mantle of true Masonic charity, and strive to emulate his virtues and the attractive and worthy qualities of his character.

Resolved, That we extend to the widow and relatives of our deceased brother, the assurance of our heartfelt sympathy from condolence in their great and sudden bereavement, and that this tribute be spread on the minutes of this Lodge.

Resolved, That the jewels and emblems of our lodge-room are draped in mourning in memory of our deceased brother, and that copies of this minute be given to his widow, and to the PULASKI DEMOCRAT for publication.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, February 5, 1891 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Daysville - The news of the death of Brayton A. Russell was a sad blow to many of his friends here, it being totally unexpected. He was one of our most promising young men up until the time of his death. For the past year he had been engaged in business and Pulaski, and before that time was a very successful schoolteacher. He was a young man of a sunny, cheerful disposition, making friends everywhere. Those that have heard the strains of his violin, need not be told that he was a natural musician, and we believe that he intended perfecting himself in the art. Brayton was the only son of William Russell of this place, and was about 25 years of age. His parents and sisters have the deepest sympathy of all in their sudden bereavement. The interment took place here in the Willis cemetery.

Robert Paul, Rector, officiating. There was a large audience in attendance and the little church was crowded to the very doors and numbers went away unable to effect an entrance. Members of the Ringgold Fire Company attended in a body and in full dress uniform, presenting a fine appearance. Deceased was a member of that organization and was greatly beloved by all his comrades. The church was beautifully adorned with flowers and some of the floral designs were very massive and really magnificent. Feeling and appropriate remarks were made by Rev. Paul referring to the deceased, whom he well knew and whom he highly respected. The solemn service of the church and the singing by the choir were all very appropriate to the occasion.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, January 15, 1896 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - There was a very large attendance of the most respectable people of our village as well as of friends from Oswego and Syracuse at the funeral of the late Mrs. Cora Marie Betts, beloved wife of Doctor George W. Betts, one of our most esteemed physicians, at his residence on Saturday last, and the suddenness of her departure from _blooming health in addition to the doctor and her having just got settled in their beautiful home, affected every heart giving touching emphasis to the words in the burial service. "In the midst of life we are in death; of whom may we seek for succour but of thee, O Lord." Mrs. Betts was born in Oswego village on the 5th of October, 1858, and was the eldest daughter of the late Sherman Clark Esq., and of his beloved wife, Mrs. Sarah Marie Clark, who with three daughters, Mrs. Fred Sharp, Miss Anna and Miss Jessie Clark are thus suddenly bereaved. Mrs. Rett was a faithful and beloved member of St. James's church from a child, having been baptized into Christ when less than nine years of age, by the Rev. M. B. Benton, confirmed by Bishop Huntington at the age of fifteen, and regular in her attendants on the services of the church, and that the holy Communion up to the end of her earthly pilgrimage, and of a married life of more than usual happiness and prosperity of almost fifteen years. Her piety was of a modest correlation disposing her to say little of herself yet deep and all-pervading has appeared by her devotion to her husband and friends. A cheerfulness which caused all our young people to love her, and in her words to her mother in her last illness, "I am not afraid to die," while she kept repeating over and over again the words of the everlasting gospel as contained in the services of the Episcopal Church. By her particular instructions the officiating Minister, Rev. Robert Paul, confined himself wholly to the burial service as it is contained in the Prayer Book of the Episcopal Church.
