12356 Joy Wheeler Oliver, 76, of Richland, NY, died January 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Joy was born November 6, 1948, in Syracuse, N.Y., to the late Russell Spencer Wheeler and Elma June Howell Wheeler. Raised in North Syracuse, she graduated from North Syracuse Central High School in 1966 and went on to attend the State University of New York College at Oswego, where she made many lifelong friends and met the love of her life, Al Oliver. During her Oswego years, Joy sang and played 12-string guitar; worked at Camp Talooli in Pennellville, N.Y.; and studied abroad at Oxford University in England. She earned her B.A. in English Literature in 1970, and her master’s in Secondary Education in 1977.

Joy and Al were married in North Syracuse on August 15, 1970, and moved to Pulaski, N.Y., to begin their teaching careers. Upon accepting a full-time role in the English Department (later Language Arts) of Pulaski High School in 1971, Joy dedicated the entirety of her career to the students and faculty at Pulaski. She served as advisor to the National Honor Society and introduced reading and writing workshops - a more modern, personalized and interactive approach to Language Arts instruction - for the first time in the district in the 1990s. In her last several years of teaching, Joy facilitated a partnership with the Pulaski Historical Society, through which her students learned foundational research methods and made meaningful connections to their community’s past. By the time she retired in 2004, Joy had touched the lives of more than 3,000 students, including two generations of countless families and three generations of some.

Joy’s nurturing spirit and love of both teaching and learning extended deep into her community. In the 1980s and 1990s, she served on the Pulaski Day Care Center board of directors, ultimately in the role of president, overseeing the design and construction of a new facility that dramatically increased access to quality childcare in the area. Joy was a member of multiple book clubs and creative writing groups, including the Parish Writers, which she helped organize and later led. She was an active member of the Pulaski Retired Teachers Association, the Pulaski and Half-Shire (Richland, N.Y.) historical societies, and Park United Methodist Church, where she and Al found a bounty of love, connection and support.

Joy was creative and colorful in every sense. After taking up oil painting in college, she blossomed decades later into a talented watercolor painter, inspired by the boundless beauty of the Adirondack Park, Alaskan wilderness, and lakes and seascapes near and far where she found peace and connection with nature. She took classes, formed friendships, and had her work displayed at the Salmon River Fine Arts Center in Pulaski. Joy and Al traveled together extensively, including nine months exploring in Europe in 1974-1975; several family trips to Italy during their retirement; cruises of the Greek isles, Alaska, and Mexico; and extended stays in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Joy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Al Oliver of Richland, N.Y., and by their children: Jeremy Richard Oliver and his wife Susan of Penfield, N.Y., and Rebecca Oliver DiGenova and her husband Michael of Syracuse. Joy is also survived by her sister, Debra Gale, and brother-in-law Stephen of Wendell, N.C.; her maternal aunt, Evelynn Rose of South Butler, N.Y.; niece Hillary Gale Decker and her husband Scott of Raleigh, N.C.; nephew Jacob Gale and his fiancée Jenn Yung of South Amboy, N.J.; grandson Chase McCarthy and grand-niece Arianna Gale. She is also survived by three step-siblings, Douglas, Bruce and Betsy.

In addition to her parents, Joy was predeceased by her loving step-parents, Paul Beall and Dona Wheeler; her beloved brother, Richard F. Wheeler; many wonderful aunts and uncles and dear friends.

A memorial service is planned for this spring, in Pulaski, at a date to be announced. Donations in Joy’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Salmon River Fine Arts Center, or any nonprofit of your choice that supports educational opportunities or the arts. Arrangements in care of Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski.

Newspaper Obituary - Monday Evening, January 25, 1904 Oswego Daily Times - Oswego, New York - Death of Judah Macy - Well-Known Resident of Pulaski and Civil War Passes Away at Advanced Age - Pulaski, January 24 - Judah Macy, the venerable father of Colonel Lewis J. Macy, one of Pulaski's oldest and most highly respected citizens, passed away Saturday evening at the home of his son, with whom he had lived for many years. Christmas day he sustained a severe shock of paralysis and had another shock Thursday afternoon, which, combined with an organic heart trouble, was the cause of death. Four sons survive: Colonel Lewis J. Macy of Pulaski, Theodore Macy of Jacksonville, Florida, Warren D. Macy of Beloit, Wisconsin, who is now in England, and Charles D. Macy of Noblesville, Indiana. His wife died about fifteen years ago. Mr. Macy was born in Rochester, March 6, 1825. His parents died when he was a mere youth and he was then taken to Chatham Four Comers, where he made his home with relatives. When a young man he learned the papermaking business at that place. After a time he went to Manlius, Onondaga County, coming to this town in 1855, accompanied by his four sons, residing here since that time. He engaged in farming for several years, taking up his residence in this village in 1861 and engaging in papermaking. In 1862 he enlisted and was attached to the 110th Regiment, New York Infantry, and in 1865 he again enlisted, going with the 193d Regiment, New York Infantry. The deceased was a charter member of J. B. Butler Post No. 111, G. A. R., and that organization will have charge of the burial service. The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church in this village at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Sidney O. Barnes will officiate.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, January 27, 1904 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Another Veteran Gone - Judah Macy Answers the Last Call -Death has again entered the ranks of the Grand Army boys and taken the seventh in about a year from our midst, and this time it is one of the well-known and long to be remembered figures in the community, Judah Macy. Ill health for several years, a shock Christmas morning, another Friday, and the life is extinguished and another veteran has answered the final roll call. Judah Macy was born in Rochester, March 6, 1825. He was the son of a Quaker preacher. His mother died when he was five years old and two years later the father was called away. Judah, a boy of seven, was bound to an uncle at Chatham, New York, where he resided until the age of twenty-one when he entered as apprentice the trade of papermaking. He went from Chatham to Manlius. He married while residing there and from the union there came five children, four sons and one daughter. The daughter died in infancy but the sons, Theodore, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, Lewis J., of this village, Warren D., of Beloit, Wisconsin, now in England on business, and Charles B., of Noblesville, Indiana, survived the father, the mother having died several years ago. Mr. Macy removed to the town of Sandy Creek in 1855, where he engaged in farming and removed to this village in 1861. In 1862 he enlisted in the service of his country, going out with the 110th New York Volunteers, from which Regiment he was discharged for disability and he later enlisted in the 193rd New York Volunteers, remaining to the close of the war being honorably discharged as corporal. Since the death of his wife he has resided with his son, Lewis, who has been devoted and thoughtful, always considering his father's necessities and comforts, and during the last months of his life, helpless as a child, the son has given him his undivided attention. Mr. Macy was favored with many friends and to all he was ever cordial and courteous, which made him most compatible among them and especially among the veterans, whose meetings were ever graced with his presence when he could consistently be with them. The funeral was largely attended, yesterday, at two o'clock from the Methodist church, Rev. S. O. Barnes officiating. His casket was draped with the stars and stripes and the floral tributes were mute reminders of the thought of loved ones. The active bearers were C. E. Seamans, W. T. Morton, J. W. Parkhurst, Henry Hinman, George Lindo and John Burr, sons of Veterans, and members of A. S. Warner Camp, in which organization Mr. Macy always showed much interest and pride, for two reasons; one, because it was so closely related to the Grand Army, and the other because his devoted son was an honor to the organization, and through his devotion to it brought the name Macy before the whole country. Many of the Grand Army boys were present to pay the last sad tribute of respect to their fallen comrade. The Grand Army burial service was recited at the church. From the discourse delivered at the church by Mr. Barnes we get the following particulars on Mr. Macy's military record: He enlisted in Company B, 110th Regiment, August 6, 1862, and was discharged on account of injuries, at Baltimore in January, 1863. Regaining his health he enlisted in a Company I, 193rd Regiment, remaining to the close of the war. He was a member of Company B Reunion Association which meets in this village, June 14th of each year. Mr. Macy was a chatter member of J. B. Butler Post, G. A. R., and was deeply interested in the order. He greatly enjoyed all gatherings of his comrades and never failed to attend the National Encampments when health would permit. Only his sons Lewis and Charles were able to be here at the funeral.

12373 Judge John French, b. 16 May 1764 in Montgomery, Hampden, MA, m. Desire Bull ca. 1785 in PA. She was b. 1770 in Dover Plains, Dutchess County, NY, daughter of Abraham Bull and Abigail Payne. The entire Bull family was from Dover Plains, Dutchess County, NY. John lived in Montgomery, Hampden, MA, at least until 1780 when his youngest brother was born.
John first moved to Sidney, Delaware County, NY, where he met and married Desire Bull. Jonathan Carley came from Dutchess county in 1796, and settled on the banks of the river in the town of Sidney, two miles below Otego. He found one Collie and Nathan Hill there. Josiah Chase came before that time. Some of this family still remain on the farm. Laban Crandall, John French and Jerry Reid, and one Godfrey Calder, came soon after. Miss Abigail Reid kept the first school in that part of the town, in Mr. Calder's barn [27].
Otego is just east of Unadilla, both in Otsego County. NY. This township was organized from parts of Unadilla and of Franklin, Delaware County, in 1822, and then called Huntsville. In 1830 the name was changed to Otego. The settlement commenced soon after the Revolution. Among the first were Ransom Hunt, of Bennington, VT, Capt. Peter and Col. Elisha Bundy, Capt. Elisha Saunders, Deacon Lester Newlands, John, Michael, and Nathan Birdsall, Benjamin Edson, a soldier of the Revolution, John Blakely, Rowland Carr, John A. and Andrew Hodge, Michael and Benjamin Shepherd, Sylvester Goodrich, John and Nahum Smith, Thurston Brown, Benjamin Estes, James Wait and Daniel Weller.
The population in the early days was, as in Oneonta, a mixture of New Englanders and Mohawk Germans, and much rivalry and frequent fights occurred until chosen champions. John French for the "Yankees" and Peter Scraming for the "Dutch" settled it at a sawmill raising on the premises of Ransom Hunt. The Yankee was the victor, and so peace was established. At Otsdawa early settlers were Frederick Martin, Nathan Emerson, King Hathaway and Henry Sheldon.

12374 Judge Stevens was a prominent mane in Boone, Iowa and a politician of considerable influence in the state. He remarried and had a son. - Nathan Edson and His Descendents Stevens, John Loomis (I21321)

12375 Judge William Hale held many of the first offices in Oswego County. he moved to Peoria, Illinois with brother Asahel and George Greenwood in 1835. he was elected the first Mayor of that city on April 28, 1845. He never had children, but was honored by many of his nephews bearing his name.
Hale was a Democrat, a Mason and an active Methodist. he was very active in temperance movements

Hale's Mill -- in 1834 William Hale, then sheriff of Oswego Co., N. Y., being West on official duty, visited the Kickapoo valley and selected a mill site at what is now the upper end of Pottstown. He returned home, resigned his office, and in the Spring of 1835 came back accompanied with George Greenwood, John Easton, and Waldo Holmes, and erected a saw mill on the site that year. The following Winter material was prepared, and in the Spring of 1835 a flouring mill was raised. He brought the necessary machinery and his family by wagon from Albany, N.Y., that Summer, and the mill was completed and set to running in the Spring of 1837. It was visited by settlers for a radius of thirty miles, and was crowded with business. The water supply giving out in 1848, steam was substituted, and Mr. Hale controlled the property until his death, in 1859. The mill was converted into a distillery, which was destroyed by fire in 1867

HALE, WILLIAM. William Hale was born in Pawlet, Vermont, December 7, 1783. His early life was spent on a farm, where he received the advantages of a good common-school education, and, like many young men of the Green Mountain State, spent a portion of his time in teaching. He settled on a farm in Oswego County, New York, and, while living there, became one of the leading men of the county. For many years he held the position of Justice of the Peace. He was then appointed to the Associate Judgeship, held the office of Deputy Sheriff, and then Sheriff, of the county.
In 1835 he came to Peoria, and, in company with his brother, Asahel Hale, and George G. Greenwood, erected a saw and grist-mill on the Kickapoo Creek. At the first town meeting after township organization was adopted, on April 2, 1850, he was elected one of the first Board of Supervisors. He was also the first Mayor of the city of Peoria, receiving his election at the adoption of the city charter, on April 28, 1845.
The business life of Mr. Hale, after leaving the mill, was mostly spent in dealing in real estate, in which he became quite wealthy. He bought at an early time eighty acres in the central portion of the east part of the city, upon which some of the finest residences in that part of the city are now located, and laid it out into streets and lots, from which he received a handsome income. We are informed that he purchased the whole eighty for seven hundred dollars, only a fraction of the price of one lot at the present tine. Mr. Hale added Hale's first, second and third additions to the city of Peoria.
Mr. Hale was a prominent member of the order of Free Masons, and donated the ground for a Masonic Cemetery. He also gave liberally to the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. In politics he was a Democrat, and his first vote was cast for General Jackson, the second term of his election to the Presidency.
He was married on March 27, 1830, at the age of forty-two years, to Miss Hannah Twitchell. Mr. Hale died November 25, 1859. (Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Peoria County, 1902, page 455, submitted by Janine Crandell)

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, December 22, 1859 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Death of Judge Hale - We see, in the Peoria Transcript of November 26, a notice of the death of the Hon. William Hale, on the 25th, at the age of 78. Judge Hale was a native of Vermont, but immigrated to this county, while young where he continued to reside until 1835, when he removed to Peoria, Illinois. He was formerly sheriff of this county, and held other offices of importance and trust, all of which he filled with ability and to the satisfaction of the people. He was always an honest, honorable, benevolent and Christian man, a faithful and consistent Methodist, and leading member of the Masonic fraternity, to whom he gave the Masonic Cemetery at Peoria. In that city, as here, he was universally respected and honored, having been elected the first mayor, in 1848, and having served as chairman of the board of supervisors for several years. FIe had no children of his own, but adopted several, educating and providing for them in the most liberal manner. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, taking part in the defense of our northern frontier, and during the latter years of his life belonged to the Republican party, but was tolerant and liberal towards those of different opinions. His numerous friends here, who have long remembered him with pleasure, will learn his death, though at a good old age, with feelings of sincere regret.

All was done for her that kind hearts and loving hands could do, but on the morning of March 7th, she quietly slipped away from this world to join those gone on before. The funeral was held from her late home Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. C. T. Holcombe officiated, assisted by Rev. William MacLeod of the Congregational church. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful. She was laid to rest in the Willis cemetery. The following is taken from her mother's obituary, who died May 5, 1900 at the age of 80 and nothing could be more fitting said of her than this. "As a mother she was kind, and indulgent. She early learned that the secret of a happy life was a firm trust in God, which she maintained to the end of her earthly pilgrimage. As a friend and neighbor she was thoughtful and true. One rule of her life seemed to be 'to do good as you have the opportunity.' This rule she ever tried to put into practice, consequently her life was marked by deeds of charity. Her Christian life has been long and consistent, and useful. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, a kind and sympathetic neighbor and an earnest Christian." C.W.W.
