King, of Peoria, Illinois. Another daughter, Katherine King Hutchens, died two years ago. From 1848 to 1855 Mr. King was a member of the law firm of McCarty & King. Since that time he had practiced alone and had been well occupied with an extensive business. From a boy of fourteen to a man of seventy-eight Mr. King had been a part of the village, which pauses to-day to drop a tear of regret on the bier of a man who was a man. He was never too busy to do something for the cause of education, having been one of the organizers of the Pulaski academy and one of the substantial supporters of the Congregational church, where he was found every Sunday for worship. Though a faithful advocate of the principles of the Democratic party, Mr. King never sought office, seeming rather to prefer the success attainable in his profession to that hoped for and sometimes attained in politics. He was a member of Pulaski Lodge, F. & A.M. A retrospective view of the life of Mr. King will give everyone capable of measuring true worth a glance at a life work which is bound to be felt in this community all along the coming years. We cannot refrain from speaking of some personal characteristics, which will keep many mindful of him. In his family he always devoted much thought to the things which go to make a home pleasant and incline its members to love it. He anticipated every wish of his children, thus leading them to a love and esteem for him in the highest degree. He was kind hearted, often moved to help someone in need when their necessities became known to him. The funeral will be held from his late residence to-morrow afternoon at four o'clock.

12424 July 14, 1893 ~ Mary Ann Mahaffy, age 36 years, 10 months, born in Ontario, Canada, Daughter of William and Lettie McCombs, died in Pulaski of phthisis pulmonalis duration about 3 years.

Newspaper Article - Thursday, July 20, 1893 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. J. S. Cleland, of Binghamton, has been in town for several days, called here by the death of her sister, Mrs. John Mahaffy.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, July 20, 1893 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - Mary Ann Mahaffy was born on Wolf Island, Province Ontario, September 3, 1856, and died in Pulaski, New York, July 14, 1893. In 1870 she came to Pulaski with her parents, William and Letitia McComb, where she has lived until her death, with the exception of two years, with her husband, in the city of Oswego. She was married with John Y. Mahaffy, June 29, 1876. Three or four years ago she was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church, in this place, on probation. Soon afterwards she suffered from a severe attack of the grip followed at intervals by painful sickness till it became apparent that ever-to-be-dreaded consumption had begun its work, and slowly, like a fading flower, she sunk under its ravages until the final release. It was hard for her to give up her husband and her three children, with life only fairly begun, and doubly hard for them to part with her, the faithful wife and loving mother. To her parents, to her brother and three sisters her death comes as the first great bereavement in their family. In such an hour how great the comfort of Jesus Christ, whose mighty arms, we believe, the deceased was permitted to lean upon, who is, in every dark hour, and in the valley and the shadow of death "the resurrection and the life."

12425 July 14, 1895 ~ Sarah M. Betts, age 71 years, 6 months, 3 days, Widow, born in New York, died in Pulaski of stenosis of blood vessels of the brain.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, July 17, 1895 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In this village, July 15, 1895, Sarah Maria Burroughs, relict of the late Dr. James N. Betts, aged 73 years.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, July 17, 1895 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - In Memoriam - On Monday morning, July 15, 1895, at eight o'clock, after a week of unconsciousness, the gentle spirit of Mrs., James N. Betts was set free from its earthly tenement and went back to the God who gave it. Mrs. Sarah Burroughs-Betts was well known and highly respected by a very large circle of friends and acquaintances, and for the past two weeks the question regarding her possible improvement was asked many times a day. This much loved woman, a lady of quiet Christian graces and character, was born in Coventry, Chenango County, in this state, January 12, 1822. On December 24th, 1843, she was married to Dr. James N. Betts, of Greene, in the same county. Here they resided for a few years, subsequently residing in Carthage and afterwards at Syracuse. In the year 1855, or forty years since, Dr. Betts settled in Pulaski, where, for many years, husband and wife toiled with untiring energy and efficiency. Mrs. Betts was a true mother and her love and self-denial for her children knew no bounds. She was thoroughly devoted to her home and a great lover of flowers. These she cultivated most successfully, and many a rare bouquet had been called from her plants for the sick, for funeral services and for church decorations. Mrs. Betts, for many years and up to the time of her death, was an interested member of the Pulaski Baptist church and a contributor to its support. She was especially interested in the construction of the new edifice, so recently completed. Since the death of her husband, which occurred in March, 1892, she has been in failing health and had a serious illness a year since, from which she never recovered. For a few weeks the deceased has been sinking slowly and for several days has been perfectly unconscious, and almost imperceptibly approaching that great and final change which awaits us all. She leaves three sons, A. F. Betts, J. H. Betts and Dr. G. W. Betts, all well-known residents of this village, who through life will tenderly revere the memory of a dear mother who never knew what it was to weary in the care of her family. The funeral services will be held this morning at 10:30 o'clock, at the late residence of deceased, corner of Lake and Broad streets. They will be conducted by Rev. W. W. Boyd, D. D., of St. Louis.

12434 July 2, 1902 - Augustus L. Learned, age 33 years, Married, Farmer, born in Richland Township, Son of Lyman Learned born in New York, and Jennie Conant, Died in Richland Township of tuberculosis general, exhaustion.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, July 9, 1902 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Fernwood - The death of Mr. A. L. Learned which occurred on Wednesday last cast a shadow of gloom over our entire community. Although he had been very ill a long time we all hoped he might be spared to his family and friends for a while at least. The funeral was largely attended on Sunday from his late home by the Rev. L. C. Wright, who spoke words of comfort from Romans 8:18, the one in which Mr. L. loved to console himself with during his suffering. A wife in poor health, and four children are left to mourn and live without the counsel and love to help them which the husband and father was wont to give, but they do not mourn without a hope for their hopes are built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness. The floral tributes were beautiful, a broken wheel, and a compass of pansies and green leaves, from the league; a pillow of pink and white roses and geranium leaves, from the Sunday school; calla lilies, water lilies and other flowers in a great profusion, but it did not hide the thought from the broken hearted wife that he had gone never to return.

12436 July 20, 1886 - - Leander Parkhurst, age 80 years, Widow, Retired, born in Mexico, New York, Son of Nathan Parkhurst and Lydia Green, died in Pulaski of paralysis.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, July 22, 1886 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died in this village July 20th, 1886, Gen. L. Parkhurst, aged 80 years. Funeral Friday at 10 a.m. at his late residence, Mexico Independent, please copy.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, July 29, 1886 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died at Pulaski, New York July 20, 1886, Gen. Leander Parkhurst, aged 80 years, 4 months, and 10 days. He was born near Colosse, Oswego County, where his boyhood was passed amidst the hardships incident to those early times. There he saw the wilderness, with here and there a small clearing and a log hut, transformed to green fields, while the log huts gave place to pleasant and comfortable dwellings. In this transformation his own industry and skill bore no mean part. The first marriage in the town of Parish was that of the parents of Gen. Parkhurst in 1805. In 1808 the father was killed by a falling tree, when Leander went to live with his grandfather, Col. Jonathan Parkhurst, who had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and, in 1812, commanded the militia of Oswego County, taking part in the defense of Fort Ontario when it was first attacked by the British. Leander received his education in the common schools of his day, and for several years was himself a teacher. About sixty years ago he taught one term in Lehigh district, town of Richland, Mr. J. B. Fox and Mrs. Henry Hinman being among his pupils at the time. When about 16 years of age he removed to the town of Hastings, where he remained some twelve years, when he returned to Colosse, where he remained until 1865. Subsequently he lived in Erie County about five years, then in Minneapolis until 1880, since which date his home has been in Pulaski with his son, B. E. Parkhurst, Esq. Living in the family of one who had fought for his country’s independence, Leander’s attention was early turned to military affairs, and in 1824 he became a member of the 8th Regt. 6th Brigade of New York Rifles, of which regiment he was at length made Colonel. In 1842 he was commissioned Brigadier General of the 6th Brigage4, his commission being signed by Gov. William H. Seward. During the Mexican War Gen. Parkhurst held his brigade in readiness to go at a moment’s notice but their services were not called for and when the brigade was disbanded Gen. Parkhurst retired from military life. He became a member of the Colosse Baptist Church many years ago, but for some increasing time deafness has prevented his taking part in public religious services. This was a severe trial for him. Enfeebled by age, and disease, at last he fell asleep, coming to his grave “in full age, like a shock of corn cometh in his season.” His funeral was conducted by Rev.’s D. D. Owen and S. E. Brown, and his body was buried in the family lot in the cemetery at Hastings. “Blessed be the dead who die in the Lord … Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.”

The deceased was born on the 28th day of April, 1830, in this village. Her maiden name was Helen Marr Doane. Her childhood was spent in a peculiarly pleasant home in the care of religious and intelligent parents and in the companionship of affectionate and cultured sisters and a brother who held for a term the position of Clerk of the County. She was married at the age of 20, September 17, 1850 to the husband who survives her, to deeply mourn her irreparable loss. For nearly thirty years she has been a member of the Congregational church of this village, devoted and exemplary, having united on profession March 3rd, 1891. Dr. Douglas, her former pastor, assisted by Rev. Mr. Owen, pastor of the Baptist church and Rev. Mr. Paul, rector of the Episcopal church.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 18, 1897 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - July 31, 1897, of blood poisoning, Mrs. Grace McChesney, aged 55 years and 5 months. The subject of this sketch was the daughter of the late David Ehle, of Sandy Creek. She resided in her native town until her marriage with Ralph McChesney, of Selkirk, who was drowned about fifteen years ago while coming from Sandy Pond to Selkirk in a sail boat. Mrs. McChesney's life has been one of suffering and trial, for owing to a spinal difficulty she was unable to walk for more than twenty years and has propelled herself about the house in a wheel chair, but she was always of a cheerful disposition and always made the best of everything. She was totally blind in her left eye, but when anyone spoke of it she would say, "Well, I can see pretty well with the other one." She was never known to complain of her hardships and was more liberal and active in good works than many are who have the use of all their faculties. She had been a member of the Methodist Church for many years and lived in the hope of meeting in heaven the friends gone before. During her last sickness of fourteen weeks, she was hopeful and courageous, while ready to die if it was God's will, yet looking forward to recovery until the last. She leaves one son, Alton, who is a sailor on the lakes and was unable to be present at the funeral. He deeply feels the loss of his mother and will always remember her instructions and admonitions. He has the sympathy of all his friends in this time of son-ow. The funeral was well attended, Rev. J. Bailey, of Pulaski, conducting the services. Burial at Sandy Creek.
