12460 July 9, 1885 ~ Claude Webb, age 5 years, 5 months, born in Richland Township, Son of Johnson Webb and Betsey Montondo, died in Pulaski of drowning.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, July 16, 1885 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Accidental Drowning - On Friday last about 12 o’clock, Claude Webb, son of Johnson Webb, while wading in the river at the rear of Salladin’s marble shop, was carried out into deep water by the current and drowned. The lad was only about five years of age, his birthday being February 29, 1880. The only witness of the act was a four year old son of Mr. J. Salladin. On the coroner’s inquest Mr. Salladin testified that his son ran to the shop and said “Claudie has gone!” Going to the rear of the shop window he said, “He went out in there,” indicating the deep water just under the Campbell dam, “and drank a lot of that nasty water.” Search for the body was made at once and the mother was notified. The father was at work near Theresa, Jefferson County. Some young men happened to see a body go over the Ingersoll dam below the Syracuse Northern railroad bridge and search being made by Harmon and Manwarren, the little fellow’s remains were taken from the water in which they had been for an hour and a half. Efforts at resuscitation were made by Dr. Walsh, but of course there could have been no hope, the body having been so long under the water. It is a subject of universal surprise that the body should have thus floated so great a distance down the river in so short a time, it being the rule for bodies to sink to the bottom and there remain for a day or two after drowning. Dr. Caldwell, the coroner, summoned a jury and held an inquest. The witnesses sworn were A. Salladin, Will Robinson, George Manwarren, Dr. Welsh and Frank Hibbard. The verdict, “accidental drowning” was signed by the following named jurors: N. B. Smith, foreman, L. R. Muzzy, F. N. Parker, W. H. Bentley, J. D. Ledyard, C. S. Clark, Z. Kiblin, A. A. Maltby. It is a sad case and the afflicted father and heartbroken mother deserve sympathy of all. We venture to suggest that parents should be very particular with their children, not allowing them quite so much liberty in playing around the river. Nearly every year some accident of this kind occurs to sadden some loving father and mother and quicken the public pulse over the dangers of the river.

The shot also entered the left breast just above the heart. A large hole nearly the size of a silver dollar was torn in the breast. The left lung was also punctured. Some of the shot pierced the face. Wads from the gun passed along the line of the neck and followed up the sternum, which were extracted by the physicians. Dr. F. E. MacCallum and Dr. Charles E. Low of this village remained a greater part of the afternoon with the injured man. Mr. Halsey, after the gun was discharged, managed to reach the barn, some distance _ _ John Wolcott, a farmhand, who with others went to his assistants. Later they moved onto a farm near the North church, built them a house, and for many years kept a tavern, as it was then called. Elias was converted in a revival which broke out in haying time, under the labors of Elder Bidwell in the Manwaring school house in 1840. He joined the Baptist society and has lived a consistent Christian life. In 1841 he married to Amelia Jenne, and of their five children, three of them grew to womanhood. He was twice married, his second wife being Mrs. Lucina Scott. She died some years ago and in 1891, he came to live with his daughter, Mrs. Nelson Sherman. As he grew feeble with old age the present did not interest him much as the past, but he could always recall the things that occurred in his younger days and liked to tell of the early settlers. He remembered when there were only three houses here besides their own. One of these old land marks is yet standing, the Mrs. John Ripsom house, now owned by L. C. Cole. His father died at age 90, his brother, Van Rensalear at 82, his sister, Louisa Soule at 87, his brother William and sister Betsey Loomis in middle life. His twin sister, Eliza Loomis at 84 and he at 85. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Sherman and Mrs. H. A. Woodruff, both of this place. The funeral was largely attended. Rev. Johnson, of New Haven, officiating.

12486 June 22, 1900 - Henry W. Parker, age 32 years, 11 months, 4 days, Married, Clerk, born in Williamstown, New York, resided in Richland Township 2 months, Son of Sylvanus Parker born in Lexington, New York, and Julia Ann White born in Ashland, New York.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, June 27, 1900 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Henry White Parker - In the death of Henry W. Parker, which occurred in this village, Friday afternoon at 5:45, a life of promise and usefulness was closed. Mr. Parker was born in the village of Williamstown, July 18, 1867. When five years of age he came to this village with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvanus Parker, and he resided until September, 1887, when he went to Syracuse and entered the employ of Dey Brothers & Company, remaining in their employee until last January, when failing health made it necessary for him to lay aside the duties which he had so faithfully performed over twelve years. While a resident of this village Mr. Parker grew into the affection of a large circle of friends and when he went to the city he was not forgotten. His position gave him ample opportunity to assist many in the search for places and material which shoppers from his old home found difficulty in finding and in that way he strengthened friendship and gained opportunity to satisfy his great desire to be helpful. For seven years he was one of the most faithful floor walkers, the duties of which position he seemed eminently fitted to meet. He was later in the office as bookkeeper and when health seem to be giving away the firm gave him an outdoor position which he held to the close of his service there. June 9, 1891, Mr. Parker was married to Miss M. Ritta Seamans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Seamans, of this village. The union was blessed with two sons, Clayton, who is now seven years, and Edward, aged four. Besides the widow and sons, Mr. Parker is survived by his mother, one sister, Miss Minnie Parker, a brother, Mr. Fred Parker, of Syracuse, and a brother, Mr. Edward Parker, of Mexico. Since the beginning of his decline Mr. Parker has tried the efficacy of the mountain air, returning the last time from Saranac Lake early in May, after a three months sojourn there, but the certain sting of consumption had so poisoned his body no earthly aid could cope with its power, yet with hope and courage he battled to the last hours, yielding not until strength was too small to serve him further; it was then that he responded to the call of the Master and left the wasted form of clay to enter the tenement of everlasting endurance to be with Him whose promises never failing, "Come unto me and I will give you rest." Mr. Parker embraced Christian faith and took the first steps towards church membership last fall. While here, in youth, he was a regular attendant of the Congregational church and Sunday school. The funeral services were held from the residence, On North street, Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. B. Felt, pastor of the Congregational church officiating. The Masonic burial service was recited at the grave by Mr. Oron V. Davis, master of Pulaski Lodge No. 415, of which Mr. Parker was a member. Friends from out of town, present were Mrs. Parker, Miss Minnie Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Parker, Mrs. Parsons, Mrs. Peckham, Messrs. Todd, Post and Arnold, of Syracuse; the three last named were former associates in Dey Brothers, store. Mr. and Mrs. William West, Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Wart, Sandy Creek; Mr. E. G. Potter, Miss Helen Potter, Orwell; Miss Harriet L. Seamans, Altmar; Mr. and Mrs. H. A. White, Miss White and Mr. Curtis White, Williamstown. The floral tributes were beautiful and abundant. The clerks in Dey's sent a floral monument which was a creation of rare beauty and most fittingly emphasized the esteem in which they held their departed associate and friend.

Scarce had these items reached the press before the Master, for whom he was waiting, said “it is enough, come up higher.” Tuesday evening, June 23d, not far from nine o’clock, the death angel bore his weary spirit over the river and left with the loved ones who have done so much to relieve his suffering and to make his last days happy and free from care, only the lifeless clay. He was one of South Richland’s oldest inhabitants, having reached the age of three score and ten years. He leaves an only son and two daughters and an aged and very feeble wife in the care of this son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. A. Rockfellow. May there be kind and loving hands to deal as gently and kindly with them when their hair is turned to gray and their steps are faltering, as these are and have been to this aged father and mother.
