Aged and Highly Respected Citizen of Pulaski Passes Away-Had Held Many Public Offices Pulaski, Sept 29.-In the death of Captain Ira Doane, which occurred at 10:80 u'clock last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs Martha Potter, Pulaski loses one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens. Captain Doane had been in feeble health several months, but has been able to be about the house much of the time. Captain Ira Doane, who was the son of John Doane, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, was born in Litchfieid, Herkimer County, June 10, 1807. With his parents he moved to Orwell, Oswego County, in 1821. A few years later he became a resident of Pulaski. In 1830 he married Audrea Vorce, and a few years ago he was married for the third time. His wife survives him. She has been an invalid for several and resides with her son, Charles Beeman of East Syracuse. Her condition has been critical several days, but faint hopes being entertained for her recovery. For many years Captain Doane was engaged in farming. He was at one time a merchant in Pulaski and was also extensively engaged in lumbering. He has served with distinction in many public offics, being at one time President of the village, Collector, jailer and Under Sheriff of this County and was also inapector of customs in New York. In politics Captain Doane was a staunch Democrat. He voted for Andrew Jackson and had never missed voting for a Democratic President since that time. Besidea his widow he is survived by the daughter at whose home he died, and a son, Helen F. Doane. Oct. 3.-A large concourse of relatives and friends attended the funeral services held over the remains of Capt Ira Doane, which were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martha Potter, in North st., Saturday afternoon. The Rev. B. DeForest Snyder, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated, and he also rendered an appropriate solo. A short time previous to his death Capt Doane gave explicit directions as to how his funeral and burial should be conducted, and in accordance with his expressed wishes the arrangements were carried out, the body being placed in the casket resting upon its left side, and the cane which he had carried nearly half a century was placed in the right hand. The casket, which was covered with plain black broadcloth, rested in the front parlor and placed upon it was a sheath of wheat and near by a floral sickle, while at the rear of the casket was a large wreath formed of autumn foliage. Interment was made in the Pulaski cemetery in the Doane plot, the body, being placed beside the graves of two of his wives. The pallbearers were Lafayette Erskine, Henry B. Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, October 5, 1904 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - In the death of Capt. Ira Doane, the oldest and one of the best known residents of our town is taken from among us. He died Wednesday evening, September 28, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martha Potter, who has tenderly cared for her aged father since the serious illness of his wife, necessitating her residence with her son in Syracuse. Mr. Doane was born at Litchfield, Herkimer County, June 10, 1807. He was a son of John Doane, who was a Revolutionary soldier, and with his parents located in Orwell, in 1821, a few years later moving to Pulaski. In 1830 he was married to Audra Vorce. For many years Mr. Doane followed farming, then he became a merchant here and at one time was engaged in lumbering. He had served in many public offices among which were president of the village, collector, jailer and undersheriff of Oswego county. At one time he was inspector of customs of New York. He has always been a staunch Democrat, voting for Andrew Jackson and has never missed voting for a Democratic president since that time. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. B. DeForest Snyder preached the sermon and rendered an appropriate solo. In accordance with the expressed wish of the deceased all arrangements were simple. The remains reposed in a plain black casket and in the right hand was placed the cane which he had carried for nearly half a century. Sanderson, Sr., 63, of Orwell died on Thursday, November 20 at the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Watertown, where he had been a patient for nine days. Mr. Sanderson was born on April 26, 1912 in the Town of Richland, the son of Frank and Angie Cleveland Sanderson. He attended Pulaski Academy and was married to Lucy M. Potter in 1933 at Richland. The couple lived at Rome, N.Y. before moving to Orwell. Mr. Sanderson was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. as a maintenance foreman from 1945 until he retired in 1972. He was a member of Niagara Mohawk's 25 Year Club and was a member of the Orwell Union Church. He was a past member of the Orwell Odd Fellows Lodge and the Orwell Fire Department. In the November elections this year, he was elected to a two-year term as assessor in the Town of Orwell. Surviving besides his wife are: three sons, Frank E., Jr. and James E. of Pulaski and Larry G. of Altmar; two daughters, Mrs. David [Judith] Daugherty of Orwell and Miss Cindy Sanderson at home; four brothers, James, Lynn and Harrison of Pulaski and John of Richland and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 22 at 2 p.m. at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski with the Rev. Ivan Greenfield officiating. Mr. Remington was a barber for over 50 years, and operated Remington's Barber Shop in Lacona until his 1985 retirement. He married Leita Bell April 10, 1937 in Lacona with the Rev. Luther M. Ridgeway officiating. Mr. Remington was a life resident of Lacona. He was born July 4, 1846, son of the late Alonzo and Mary ( Jewell) Hilton. In October 1875, he was united in marriage with Miss Ella L. Fink of Redfield. To this union were born three daughters and two sons. The children are Mrs. John Warren, Pulaski; William Hilton, Skaneateles; Mrs. Dean Williams, Redfield; Mrs. G. S. Petrie, Pulaski; Ward S. Hilton, Richland, all of whom with the widow survive him. Esther Hilton has for many years been a member of Orwell Grange. The funeral service will be conducted in the home, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the remains placed in the receiving vault in Evergreen cemetery, where burial will be made in the spring. | Hilton, Lafayette (I72942)
