| 12757 | LAURENTINE LOVERNA MULLIN BETTINGER ROGERS Click here to view Laurentine's Video Tribute Laurentine Loverna Mullin was born August 10, 1927, in Adams, New York, to Victor Ellis Mullin and Clara L. Fitzgerald Mullin. She was the second to the oldest of eight children and loved helping to raise her younger siblings. She was always musical. She played trumpet and harmonica, and sang with her older sister. Her claim to fame was that she once sang on the radio with Woody Herman when he was stationed at Camp Drum in Watertown, New York, during World War II. Laurentine met Roy Bettinger soon after graduating high school at Mannsville Manor Central School. In August, he asked her if she would agree to marry him after Christmas. She said that she would. She thought that he was going to propose to her after Christmas. She had no idea they were actually engaged! They were married January 5, 1946. It was during their honeymoon to Montreal, Canada, that he told her that he wasn't going to wake up every morning and call her Laurentine. He said, "Your name is Mike." That was the name friends used, although family still called her Laurentine. "Mike" and Roy raised five children on their dairy and poultry farm in northern New York. Neither of them were able to attend college, but education was important to them. They taught their children to value a college education, not to get a good job, but because a good education changes who you are. All of their children attended college. Roy died on November 231, 1975. "Mike" began a cottage industry making and selling jams and jellies, as well as breads and cookies. She sold over 100 varieties of jams and jellies at craft markets, in independent stores, at the Women's Exchange in New York City, and at the Farmers Market in Watertown, New York. Her business was successful, and she thrived at being so independent. In 1987 "Mike" married Roy Rogers, a man she met through a personal advertisement family members placed in the Watertown Daily Times without her knowledge. Roy died in 2004. "Mike" and Roy moved to Oregon to be near "Mike's" youngest grandchildren in 1999. She provided childcare for her grandchildren, and was active in the Portland First United Methodist Church, as she had been very active in churches throughout her life. "Mike" developed Alzheimer's Disease while in Portland. When she realized what was happening to her, she said that she was thankful she had married two men named Roy so it wouldn't be too confusing to people! In July of 2009 she was moved to the Good Samaritan Society, Idaho Falls Village, so that she could be near her family. Brenda passed away April 22, 2010. Mike is survived by two sons, Frank (Sheila) Bettinger of Ellisburg, New York, Barry (Shahnaz) Bettinger in Edmonds, Washington, and two daughters, Sharon (Fran) Taplin of Pulaski, New York, and Brenda (Daniel) Sene of Idaho Falls, Idaho. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands and by her daughter, Melisa Bettinger Powell. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Trinity United Methodist Church. You are invited to bring cookies for a cookie exchange after the celebration of her life. | Mullin, Laurentine Loverna (I17806)

| 12765 | Lavias Fillmore was born in Middletown, VT Aug.1, 1811. In October, 1816, his parents moved, and settled in Ellisburg, on the same place where he now lives. His father, whose name was Ethni, died in Boylston, Oswego Co., March 25,1844. The mother lived twenty-eight years after her husband's death with her son(subject of this sketch), and died April 7,1872, at the age of ninety-four years. Lavias was the only son of nine children, four sisters deceased, viz.: Runetta, wife of Elijah Houghton; Mariam, wife of Stephen W. Hackley; Harley Fillmore; Alzina, wife of Thurston Baxter; and four living, viz.:Harriet, living at Rural Hill; Adelia, wife of R. Rudd, living in Boylston; Lodisca, wife of Cyrus Woodruff, living at Sandy Creek; Lavina, wife of Mr. Farmer, living in Lorraine. In March, 1816 the father first came to Ellisburg, having purchased the land of Pierrepont, 25 acres, all woods and built a log cabin. When the family moved in, in the fall , there was no floor; stumps served for chairs, and bedsteads were constructed of poles. The father and son cleared and worked the land together up to the year 1841 when the father sold the farm to his son, having purchased 500 acres in Boylston. Mr. Fillmore was married, Sept 1, 1836 to Marietta Thayer, daughter of James and Fanny Thayer. Six children were the issue of this marriage, viz.: H.H. Fillmore, born Nov. 9,1837; Orson B., born Aug, 7, 1839, died July 27,1843; Lucy Helen, born, born Jan. 23, 1843, died June 15, 1847; Ferry Deforest, born July 19, 1846, died Dec. 11, 1855; M.M. Fillmore, born Oct. 18, 1848. H.H. Fillmore married Mary Kemp, Nov. 27, 1866. Two children were born to them, viz., Menzo E. and Emma Marietta. M.M. Fillmore was married April 16, 1872 to Jennie Chamberlain. Arthur M. is their only child. After the death of his father Lavias paid up a large balance due on the Boylston land, which had been left a legacy to his sisters. Besides the "home" farm of 256 acres, Mr. Fillmore is the owner of a farm of 62 acres, also the "Hemmingway" farm of 247 1/2 acres, which is worked by his son H.H. Fillmore. He also has a half-interest in another fram of 90 acreas. This large property, with houses and outbuildings to correspond, and which are among the best in the county, is the result of a life of unremitting industry and economy, coupled with strict honesty and integrity in all his business transactions. Few men have been blessed with better health and a stronger constitution, and consequently few can be found who have "put in " more "hard days' work" than has Mr. Fillmore. Though not a member of any church, he has always contributed to the building and support of churches in his township. In politics, he is a Democrat, but never a seeker of office. Thoroughly devoted to his family, a kind and obliging neighbor, a good citizen, no one more deserves the respect and esteem in which he is held in the community. The boys were passengers in a car operated by Frank Ostrander, 17, who is in critical condition in Oswego Hospital. They had gone to a beach party to be held by the senior class, which was called off because of bad weather, and were on their way to return two other passengers, Fred Hall and Harlow Dunton to their homes in and beyond Fernwood. The accident occurred on County Highway 28 near Daysville. The car failed to negotiate a sharp turn over the bridge and went over an embankment and landed on its top in Grindstone Creek. Hall who was the least seriously injured got out of his car and made his way to the nearby residence of Elmer Roberts, who had a phone to seek help. State police were notified, and Dr. Hugh McChesney was called. Lewis Dewey also responded with the Ringgold Fire Company resuscitator, and was assisted by John DelVecchio who worked on two of the boys in vain effort to revive them. The injured boys Frank Ostrander, Harlow Dunton, and Fred Hall were taken to Oswego Hospital in the Taylor ambulance. Ostrander is suffering from a fractured skull, spine injury, possibly a broken back, and chest injuries. Dunton and Hall are not seriously injured but are suffering from shock, bruises and cuts. | 12784 | Lawrence N. Jones - December 12, 1831 - January 12, 1884. Husband of Emily Thorne Jones. Newspaper Obituary - January 24, 1884 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Departed this life on the 12th inst., Mr. Lawrence A. Jones, Mute. Mr. Jones was born a mute in the town of Richland on the 12th of December, 1831, and, at the age of twelve, was sent to the Deaf-mute Institute in New York, where he remained seven years and was carefully instructed in the practical branches of a good English education, under the faithful charge of the Rev. Thomas Gallaudet, Jr_ While in New York he became connected with the Episcopal church, and was a reverent communicant at St. James's in this village. He was much respected, as the large assembly at his funeral, notwithstanding the severity of the weather, indicated, on Monday the I 4th, when the impressive service of the Episcopal church was read and comforting words were addressed to the mourners by the Rev. Robert Paul. He has left a wife and three children to mourn his loss; but the Lord reigneth, and "what we know not now, we shall know hereafter." Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, February 14, 1884 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Death of a Graduate of the New York Institution for Deaf-Mutes - The following letter appeared in a recent issue of the Deaf-Mutes Journal, of New York: Lawrence M. Jones, of Sand Hill, Oswego county, New York, died January 12, 1884, aged 52 years. The funeral services were conducted at the residence of Mr. Jones, by Rev. Mr. Paul, rector of St. James's church, Pulaski, at 1 p.m., January 14th. Mr. Jones was a graduate of the New York Institution for Deaf-Mutes when it was located in Fiftieth street. He was married, settled down to the life of a farmer in his native town of Richland, and was a man of integrity, of industrious habits, and one of many friends. His first wife, a deaf-mute, was Miss Emily Thorn, who also graduated from the New York Institution. She died very suddenly in 1877, leaving one daughter and two sons, all of whom are still living to mourn the loss of both parents. In December, Mr. Jones married Miss Ellen W. Evans, also a deaf-mute, of Rome, New York, who survives her husband. Mr. Jones had been in delicate health for some time, to all appearances declining under organic disease of the lungs. But during the first part of this month he was attacked with pneumonia. In a few days it became apparent that this last disease was beyond the control of medical aid, and his spirit soon after winged its flight to that world on high, where there is neither pain nor death_ Several deaf mutes were in attendance at the funeral, and more would have been, had it not been for the bad roads and inclemency of the weather. A full house of friends and neighbors were present. The sorrowing wife, children and other relatives, have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. May they look to their Savior in the days of their distress, and so live as to meet the one gone before in that paradise of God where disease, pain, sickness and death never enter. H. C. R., Mexico, New York, January 22,1884. | Jones, Lawrence Noble (I63128)
