13257 Mabel Maude “Maude” Nelson - March 24, 1875 - May 27, 1930. Daughter of Franklin and Catherine Crise Weimer. Wife of Albert D. Nelson.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, June 5, 1930 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Maude Weimer Nelson - The experience of watching for wearisome months with aching hearts at the bedside of those we love as life itself is not an uncommon experience in human life. Who can forget the anguish of soul as it became more evident as the days passed by that the body was growing weaker and that the form so dear to us was being drawn by an invisible hand to somewhere beyond our ken. The luster leaves the eye, the pulse becomes feeble, the pallor that speaks of dissolution is present and we look through tearful eyes upon the form that we loved passing into a state of stillness and repose. We speak, but they answer not. We weep, but they respond not. They are yonder, and we are here, separated from each other by a chasm that is so wide and dark that we cannot span it. Whither have they gone? Are they still with us, or are they so far away that we cannot hope to “touch again the vanished he and, and hear the sound of the voice that is still.” Who in the hour of sorrow as he stood in the silent room, bending over the precious form of the departed has not asked himself whither the spirit of his dear one had gone. There is but one reasonable answer. The spirit has returned to God who gave it. “Not lost, but gone before.” Maude Weimer Nelson was born at Beach City, Ohio, on March 24, 1875. She died at Orwell, New York, May 27, 1930. Her parents were Frank and Catherine Weimer. The family group included seven children. Brothers, Lyndon and George, live at Dayton, Ohio; Leland Stanford at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; one sister, Mrs. Edythe Fry, lives at Floral Park, Long Island and Mrs. Grace W. Rickert at Connersville, Indiana. Another sister, Mrs. Lucetta W. Hawkins died several years ago. Besides these she leaves a large relationship in Ohio and a host of friends in all places in which she has had her home. Mrs. Nelson had the opportunities of a liberal education and for eleven years she was a teacher in public schools. Her last work was in the city of Youngstown, Ohio. On August 26, 1908 she was united in marriage with Albert D. Nelson, Captain of United States Coast Guard, stationed at Fort Niagara. In 1923 Captain Nelson retired from service and they moved to Orwell, New York. She was a member of the Presbyterian church at Youngstown, New York, Eastern Star, Ransomville chapter at Ransomville, New York; Rebekah Lodge at Orwell, New York; W.C.T.U. at Orwell, New York; Home Missionary society at Orwell. She was richly happy in her home and in love and patient devotion of her husband, who survives her. In-home, in church, in school and in the community, she set a good example which family and friends are glad to recognize, to remember, to cherish and to emulate. The world is better in that she lived. During the latter years of her life, spent at Orwell, she endeared herself to a large circle of friends, who by knowing her loved her. She entered whole-heartedly into all the activities of the community, and her influence was felt on the side of things worthwhile. Her pleasing personality opened to her many doors of service and made her presence a benediction. Her gifts for leadership were evident by which she achieved noble results in the social and religious life of the people among whom she lived. Her sufferings were long and painful, but she endured as one seeing the invisible. She entered her Gethsemane, aware of the bitter cup it had to offer, yet free from resent and murmur, because she believed that there was a kind Father at the heart of things, doing all things well. Memorial service was held Thursday afternoon May 29, 1930, at Union Church, Orwell, a large number of mourning friends being present. Rev. Charles Shumway and Rev. T. T. Davies, Sandy Creek, officiating. Burial in Evergreen cemetery, Orwell. A wreath of fragrant and beautiful flowers paid their silent but eloquent tribute to the memory of the one whose life had been a blessing and whose death had been victorious. “Some say we shall not meet again And scoff at us who dream; If they be right this world of men Her neither plan nor scheme. If this is all of life to be Then love itself is vain, And every hour of ecstasy Breeds bitterness and pain. I know not how, nor wear, nor when, But to this faith I cling - That after death the soul again Resumes it journeying. And somewhere in the new realms above Life spins a golden cord, Where in eternal peace and love The family is restored.”

NO AUTO FOR HER AT 102
Mrs. Jane Russel Walks and Works and Will Not Vote
Mrs. Jane Russell, of 47 102 Oread street is 102 years old, and would rather walk several miles than ride in an automobile, if there is no good old fashioned horse and carriage to give her a lift. There are few Worcester people, young or old, who have never ridden in a machine, fewer who would not like to ride in one if they could, and fewer who enjoy a walk of several miles at the age of 102. Mrs. Jane Russel lays claim to all of these distinctions.
Mrs. Jane Russell, since she has been making her home with her son, William Russell, of Oread street, walks, not infrequently, to visit her son, Nelson Russell, and her ten grandchildren, who live at 26 Lunelle St., and back home again although she has ridden and driven horses all her life. Mrs. Russell is unwilling to ride in an automobile. There are not many women in the city at any age who are more active or who perform more of their household duties than this woman of 102. All of the mending for herself and her son’s family is done by Mrs. Russell’s expert needle and she does not wear glasses to aid her eyes, either. She has unusually keen hearing, even for a woman of half her age; and often detects noises which other members of the family do not hear.
Every week Mrs. Russell does the family washing and instead of grumbling at its size, admits often that she would like to “take in” washings again, to prove her mettle and ability in this line. Nor is there any new fashioned electric washing machine in use in the Russell home. “Our grandmother’s way” is the method favored by the follower of the old school, an good hard rubbing over the tub is the only style tolerated by her.
In these days of much advertised, attractively put up soap, there are few women who make their own bars of soap and soap powder, but since Mrs. Russell came to live at Oread street home, not a cake of soap has been bought. The real old way of using left over grease for soap is the means, Mrs. Russell employes, and it is the best ever.
Scrubbing floors is a task which tires most young housewives, but the floors at 47 1-2 Oread street are white and shining as the result of the home made soap and hard scrubbing of a woman who has lived more than half a century. And Mrs. Russell says she enjoys keeping the house immaculate and the labor does not tire her over much.
Mrs. Russell was born in Canada of French-Canadian parentage, but lived there only three years. The greater part of her life, has been spend in Malone, N.Y., where she was married and raised a family of 12 children. (She resided on a small farm on what is known as Bear Hill.)
What do you attribute your long life to is the natural question to ask of those of us who attain the century mark. In answer, Mrs. Russell would say that, in the first place, she comes from a family noted for its longevity. Her mother lived to be 98 years old, and her father was 104 years old when he died. Added to that, she has lived much in the open with a great deal of hard, healthful exercise to strengthen her muscles and add to her powers of endurance.
Living on a farm in Malone far from modern luxuries which make people “soft and lazy”. Mrs. Russell has chopped her own firewood from the forest, drawn the water for household uses from the streams and springs about her home, and has worked long hours cultivating her protentions garden. Chopping wood and hoeing in a garden all day long are tasks which Mrs. Russell is proud of. And there in Worcester, although she is not as young as she was in Malone, when she had 12 hungry mouths to provide for she planted and taken care of a little garden plot this year, and if firewood is needed in the morning she will chop a supply.
Another task which Mrs. Russell pursued in her New York home, was that of taping her own maple trees and making the sugar to sell in small cakes. She says she always enjoyed making the sugar and sold her product for a shilling a pound. But a wholly different piece of work from the toothsome boiling of maple sap and of which she boasts nearly as much, is that of white washing ceilings. Not many women have the steady heads or strong arms to stand high on a ladder and wield the brush overhead. Although Mrs. Russell has not whitewashed any ceilings for some time, she says she could do it today as well as ever.
Four of her children are living in New York state now. Mrs. Elizabeth Russell Putraw, only daughter, aged 62, who still does washing a week, besides household duties. She resides on Constable street (Route 3). Peter and Edward Russell, also of Malone; Alex, of Tupper Lake. Three of Mrs. Russell’s sons are residents of Worcester. They are William of Oread street, with whom the mother makes her home; Frank Russell, of 3 Upland Street, and Nelson of Lunelle street. Mrs. Russell has 29 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren. She is not a woman suffragist and although she has engaged in many of the forms of work usually designated as men’s work, she declares that women, should not vote. When urged to register in Worcester recently, she flatly refused, saying she considered she had already done her part in this world without any voting, and she did not care to start now.

Mrs. Jane (Lebeouf) Russell, one of the oldest, if not the oldest person in Worcester, died yesterday afternoon at the house of her son, Frank, Southold, aged 105 years.

for the past nine years since she came to worcester to make her home with her son, Mrs. Russell has been oneof the unique characters of the south end of the city. Despite her age, she actiely performed her houshold duties util the past few months, while her eyesight has been so remarkable, that she did all the family mending without the aid of glasses. Members of the family say that she insisted in doing the family washing. She was born in Canada of French-Canadian parents. when she was 3 years old, her family moved to Malone, NY where she grew up and was married, living there until she came to Worcester. She was the mother of 12 children, seven of whom survive. She also leaves 29 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The surviving children are sons nelson, william and Frank of Worcester, Peter, Alexander and Adward, Malone, NY and one daughter, Mrs. Libby Poitrau, Malone.

Mrs Russell attributed her long life primarily to the fact that she came of a family famous for their longetivity. her father lived to be 104 years old while her mother was 98 years old when she died. Added to that, however, Mrs Russell gave the credit of her remarkable age and health to the hardships of pioneer life in Northern New York where she and her husband carved their home out of the wilderness.

Even after coming to Worcester, she refused to use "store soap" and instisted on making her own.

She steadfastly declined to ride in an automoblie, although she well knew how to drive a horse. She took pleasure in walking and up to the past two or three years would walk several miles to visit her children and grandchildren who live in various parts of the city.

The body will be sent to Malone, NY where burial will be in St. Helen Cemetery.

13284 MAN HURT ON ICE JOB DIES SUDDENLY
WILLIAM LYNG THOUGHT RECOVERED, DIES SUDDENLY
HAS STROKE AT HOSPITAL

Had Leg Amputated March 3 After Being Caught In Chain- Survived By Five Children.

William Lyng, Aged 53 years, of Huntingtonville, died suddenly at 11:10 this morning at the Sisters' Hospital where he had been a patient since March 3. Death was due directly to cerebral hemorrhage resulting from hardening of the arteries coupled with the shock of an accident which resulted in the amputation of his left leg on March 3.
Mr. Lyng's death came as a shock to the hospital authorities and the attending physician as well as his family. Only a few minutes previous to his death he was joking and laughing with other patients convalescing at the hospital and was apparently in good condition. He suddenly grew weak, however, he told the nurse, his physician was called but all efforts to save the man's life were unavailing.

While employed at the Ice Company of Watertown at the Huntingtonville Plant Mr. Lyng was working around a conveyor when he caught his leg in the chain. The bones in his leg were smashed, and his leg was so badly mangled that the leg hung only by the cords. He was rushed to the hospital in a motor car and the leg was taken off just below the knee.
He seemed to improve steadily after the operation and his complete recovery had been expected. He had, however been suffering from hardening of the arteries for sometime and this was a factor in his sudden death.

Mr. Lyng was born in the Town of Pinckney, Lewis County, on Feb. 11 1851, the son of the late James and Mary Ryan Lyng. About 30 years ago he was married to Miss Annetta Florida, a resident of Harrisburg, Lewis County. There he followed the occupation of a farmer.
He came to Huntingtonville ten years ago and since had worked as a carpenter. He was the father of five children.
One son, Floyd Lyng, died in Camp McClellan in 1919, while in the service. Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons Daniel, George, and Gordon Lyng; all of Huntingtonville; one daughter, Miss Anna Lyng of Huntingtonville; Three brothers: John Lyng of Los Angeles, Calif.; Frank Lyng, Montana; and Thomas Lyng of this city, and one sister, Mrs. John L. Burns, also of this city
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

13285 MAN KILLS WIFE, SON, THEN SELF - THE FORMER PULASKI RESIDENT LIVED IN ARIZONA.
Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - July 30, 1993
A former Pulaski resident killed his common-law wife and their 10-year-old son before turning the gun on himself Monday at their home in Phoenix, Ariz., police said.

Police concluded that 41-year-old Greg M. Larrabee had a run of bad luck he couldn't take anymore, so he decided to die and take his family with him.

A relative found the bodies of Larrabee, Portia Caton, 42, and their son Greg Michael Larrabee, 10, in the family's north Phoenix home. All were dead from gunshot wounds.

"Neighbors and relatives indicated that he hadn't worked in some time, and he wasn't feeling good about his prospects," said Leo Speliopoulos, media officer for the Phoenix Police Department.

"There's nothing much left to investigate," he said. "All the evidence pointed to a murder-suicide with him being the shooter."

Larrabee, a native of Syracuse and a 1971 graduate of the State Agricultural and Technical College at Alfred, moved to Arizona 15 years ago in hopes of making a career as a photographer.

He apparently found free-lance work but was forced to rely on other jobs to pay the rent. After losing two jobs in recent months, he became despondent and talked about moving back to upstate New York, Speliopoulos said.

Larrabee had worked for Eastman Kodak Co. He graduated from Pulaski Central School in 1969.

Surviving are his parents, William and Edith Larrabee of Pulaski; two brothers, William II of Pulaski and Scott M. of East Syracuse; three nephews; and a niece.

For Manford Williams, it was clipping the hair of fellow soldiers stationed at the Panama Canal to protect it from the mighty enemy forces.

Williams, 94, died Monday in Kissimmee.

''When he was in the Army, he learned about cutting hair,'' said his older sister, Verna Butts, 97, of Kissimmee.

Williams then went into the barber business, but shortly after his return to the United States, he became a devout Christian.

The inspiration led him to become a pastor in Richland, N.Y. the first of several stops as a Church of Christ minister and where he will be buried this week alongside his wife, Butts said.
