Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, April 17, 1890 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - In this village, April 13, 1890, Jeremiah Angell Mathewson, aged 84 years and 5 months. Mr. Mathewson, who was named after his father, was born in Hamilton, Madison County, September 17, 1805, and removed to Pulaski with his parents when but two years of age. He was therefore one of our oldest inhabitants. There are few persons, if, indeed, there are any now living who can give as much information regarding the early history of Pulaski as could the deceased. For many years he has lived mainly in the past, loving to relate his experiences when a young man. He kept careful records of the more important events, and those records Mr. Mathewson had, on many occasions, cheerfully furnished the editor of this journal when data was desired. For many years he owned and conducted the Pulaski house. His brothers were Arthur, Andrew and Charles, the latter of whom is now living at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mrs. Mathewson died about six years since. His two children, Henry, who was a deaf mute, and Sarah, are also deceased. Mr. Mathewson died very suddenly and his death was not discovered until Sunday morning when his granddaughter, Miss Kittie Mathewson went to call him. Not answering, he was found to be quite dead. Dr. Low, who was summoned, thought that death must have ensued very soon after Mr. Mathewson retired. He had been much better of late and retired apparently in good health. The funeral was held at his residence on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. | Mathewson, Jeremiah Angell Jr. (I43714)

Newspaper Article - Thursday, April 14, 1892 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Oswego Outings - The sudden death of Mrs. F. M. Bentley, of Pulaski, after a serious illness of a few days, is announced. Mrs. Bentley was fifty years of age, and greatly beloved by all who knew her. - Last Tuesday Dr. G. W. Nelson, county coroner, held an inquest at Williamstown upon the body of Mary Young, aged 73 years, who died at the residence of William Ellis in the town of Amboy, December 30, 1891. The inquest was held in response to the solicitations of several citizens, who were dissatisfied with the verdict rendered at an informal inquest, held by a justice of the peace in the town of Amboy, January 1st or 2d, of the present year. The body was exhumed and an autopsy conducted by Drs. Kelley, of Pulaski, and Marshall, of Williamstown, in the presence of the coroner and several citizens. It was found that the woman had died from natural causes, thus exonerating all persons from the suspicion of having hastened her death by violence, and Dr. Crispell, of Williamstown, from malicious accusation. -Pulaski Democrat. Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 19, 1911 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Freeman H. Cross - Pulaski Sustains A Great Loss In His Death. A Patriotic Youth - A Loyal Citizen - It was no little surprise to this community, when Friday morning, announcement was made that Freeman H. Cross has passed away about midnight. Mr. Cross had been ailing for some time but not confined to the house until Tuesday. Monday he came to the Democrat office with the telegram he had just received announcing the death of Mrs. Burch of Grand Rapids, and he sat and visited in the sanctum for half an hour or more and little did we think it would be the last of the always welcome calls he would make. He was about town that day and many calls which were his farewells, but he did not expect they were such. He begun to decline that night and went down rapidly. Mr. Cross was born in this village, July 14, 1848. He was a mere lad, only 14 years of age, when he was accepted as a drummer boy in the 147th Regiment, New York Volunteers and served three years. After the war he returned to Pulaski and learned the trade of machinist and later took up the profession of correcting deformities by use of appliances which has made the lame to walk in hundreds of cases. He was so skilled that no deformity of limb seemed to severe for him to help the patient. His work was not confined to this locality alone but was called for in the remotest parts of the country. He was one of the charter members of J. B. Butler Post, No. 111, G. A. R. and served in various offices up to the Commander's station which he has held with credit for the past 4 years and was the incumbent of that office at the time of his death. He was the youngest member of the Post and on him the older members relied for much of the work which keeps the organization moving. Mr. Cross married Delia Gates, November 25, 1869 who, with one son, Willard G. of Rochester, survives him and he is also survived by two brothers, George of West Winfield, New York, and Charles E. of Rochester, also one sister, Mrs. Newton Philbrick, of this village. His funeral was held from the home, Monday at two o'clock, Rev. Frederick Maunder officiating. The bearers were Sons of Veterans from A. S. Warner Camp and the burial ceremony of the Grand Army was conducted by the Post. The Post and Sons attended in a body. The floral tributes were most abundant and exceedingly impressive in design and plenty. The passing of Mr. Cross takes from our community a man who will be greatly missed. He was a good citizen, a good husband and father, a willing supporter of all that pertains to the welfare of the community, the church and school. | Cross, Freeman H. (I54934)

One of the old veteran workers in the cause of Spiritualism answered the angels call and has gone to dwell with his relatives and friends who had preceded him to spirit life. The people of Port Ontario will miss J. H. Clute. He was one of the monuments Nature had carried out to remind the rising generation that an honest upright man never forfeits the esteem of his fellow men, no matter how widely they may differ in their views upon religious matters. Honor lives and as age whitens the locks of the fathers, rising generations will point to them as the weary traveler scans the monuments by the wayside for information to guide him in his journey. Mr. Clute was one of the pioneers in Spiritualism; as far as we know of him he never wavered. Spiritualism was to him a religion. He worshipped in spirit and he received such assurance from the unseen but ever near friends, that for a time to doubt would have been a sin. He passed away inside an hour from the time he was first taken sick. Not a murmur passed his lips but he spoke of there being a number of spirit friends about him, among them his granddaughter Ida. His only with was to go and join his friends on the other side of the River, and we feel to congratulate them upon such an accession to their number. J. H. Clute was born in Bethlehem, Albany County on January 31, 1822, and moved to Schenectady in 1833. About the 5th day of May, 1840, he left Schenectady and arrived at Hastings, Oswego County on May 10th. He was married in 1845 to Adaline Douglass, daughter of Sanford Douglass. While residing at Hastings, a son and daughter, M. A. and Ida Clute, were born, both now living in Nebraska. He left Hastings in 1864 and came to Port Ontario, where he resided until his death. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. H. Harter, of Auburn, Friday, April 24th. A large concourse of people assembled to pay their last respect to the deceased. His only wish was to go and join his friends on the other side of the River, and we feel to congratulate them upon such an accession to their number. J. Though time may roll on and the memories of the departed fade away, there is one who will be remembered and whose virtues will be extolled. That name will be Jacob H. Clute. | Clute, Jacob H.
