Near, age 80, resident of Baldwinsville since 1963, passed Monday at Crouse Irving Hospital, Syracuse. Edwin was born September 14, 1931, in Altmar. He married Carol Masuicca on July 10, 1954. Ed was employed by Crouse Hinds in Syracuse for 32 years, retiring in 1994. He was recently employed by Ace Hardware in Baldwinsville. He also worked at the Kallet Theater in Pulaski. Ed was a former member of the Seneca River and Richland Volunteer Fire Departments. Survivors: wife Carol; three brothers, Earl Near of Lakeland, FL, H. Richard Fitzgerald of Pennellville and Larry Fitzgerald of Baldwinsville; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Mapleview Cemetery in Dugway. | 14304 | Neil A. Slater, 78, of Ocala Palms, Florida, and formerly of Central Square, went home to be with the Lord on August 17, 2016 at his home in Florida. He was born in Lacona, NY to the late Avery and Agnes Slater. Neil owned Slater Insurance Agency for 33 years, retired in 1999 and moved to Ocala Palms in 2000. While living in Central Square, Neil served as a Trustee on the Central Square Village Board and served on St. Michael's Parish Council. Neil was a member of Ocala Palms Men's Golf Association and a former communicant of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Surviving are his daughters, Peggy Cerone of Baldwinsville (Mike) of Brewerton, and Terri Marsh (Roger) of Tucson, AZ; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Herb (Kay) Snyder, Coraopolis, PA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Also left behind is Neil's loving companion, Della Lastooka. Neil is predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Sylvia; sister, Marlea Stannard; and in-laws Herbert (Anna Mary) Snyder. Himes, 49, manager of the local Atlantic service station, died very suddenly at his home in North Jefferson Street, Monday evening at 5:15 p.m. while at his evening meal. He had been in ill health for several months but had been back to work until last Friday when he retired to his home for rest. Services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 3 p.m. from the Taylor Funeral Home in North Jefferson Street with the Rev. James N. Pauley, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Evergreen cemetery at Orwell. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Marie A. Himes; his mother, Mrs. Lillian Hammond of Syracuse; his father, Burton Himes of Syracuse; a sister, Mrs. Harold (Neva) Scott of Kenmore; and a brother, Morton Himes, of Buffalo. Mr. Himes was born in Orwell May 19, 1904, a son of Burton and Lillian Carpenter Himes and spent his early life in that vicinity. He attended Pulaski school and was employed at Solvay Process in Syracuse for several years before coming to Pulaski. For the past nine years he has managed the Atlantic service station in the village. He was a member of the local Odd Fellows Lodge. "Mag" Pearson, 86, of 52 Hong Kong Road, Parish, formerly of Pulaski, died Saturday in St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse. Mrs. Pearson worked for 20 years in the accounting department at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, retiring in 1981. Born March 12, 1916, in Pulaski, daughter of William H. and Addie L. Hubbard Rood, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1934. She had lived in Pulaski and Nedrow and later in Parish for 38 years. She married Rick Pearson on March 27, 1965. Mrs. Pearson was a soloist at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Syracuse, and had performed in operettas with the Syracuse Berwald Concert Singers. She was also an organist at Dugway Methodist Church and was an avid flower gardener. Surviving besides her husband are a son, "Lil" Blue Pearson, Parish, and three sisters, Orla R. Skinner, Pulaski, Laura James, Syracuse, and Anna Mae Reed, Tully. Three brothers, Holland, William and Charles Rood, and a sister, Elnora Rood, died before her. Mrs. Stevens had been a patient about ten days in the Mrs. Ida Ashcraft nursing home. Mrs. Stevens suffered a fractured hip February 3. She was born in Prattham June 15, 1851, daughter of James and Sarah Webber Baker. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary November 2, 1919. Mr. Stevens died August 3, 1920. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charles Carpenter of Orwell and Mrs. Frederick A. Hallenbeck of Norfolk, Virginia, also seven grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Newspaper Obituary - Friday Evening, August 7, 1953 Daily Sentinel - Rome, New York - Fall is Fatal to Camden Woman, 72 - Mrs. Nellie Dennee, 72, Second Street, Camden, died in the United County Hospital, Utica, last night, four hours after suffering injuries in a fall in the cellarway of a friend's home in Yorkville. Dr. Arthur S. Coriale, coroner, said death was accidental and due to concussion and fractures of the skull and arm. Mrs. Dennee fell approximately eight steps in the cellarway at the home of Mrs. Melba Plantz, 15 Coventry Avenue, Yorkville, whom she was visiting. Mrs. Dennee was born in Orwell, November 17, 1880, the daughter of Watson and Jennie Cook Aldrich. On November 29, 1899, in Orwell, she was married to William F. Dennee who died in September, 1934. A resident of Camden for the past nine years, Mrs. Dennee had made her home for the past year at the Murdough Nursing Home. Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, July 12, 1939 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mourned - Community Saddened by Passing of Mrs. H. R. Franklin - This community was greatly shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Nellie Shear Franklin, wife of Mayor Franklin, at her home on Jefferson Street early last Wednesday morning. Friends had greeted Mrs. Franklin with her husband on the street during the evening before, and the news of her death stunned all. Tuesday evening, with her husband, she had witnessed the fireworks display at Selkirk and called at the home of friends who had just lost a loved member of the family. They then returned to their home where they sat for a while on their porch. As Mrs. Franklin was preparing to retire for the night, about 11 o'clock, she was suddenly stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and died about eight o'clock the next morning without regaining consciousness. Mrs. Franklin was born in Westdale, Oneida County, June 24, 1877, a daughter of Clark and Lucretia Greenfield Shear. Forty-four years ago she married Mr. Franklin and most of her life since that time has been spent in this village. She was a woman of quiet dignity and gracious manners, and her noble Christian character had won for her an ever growing circle of friends and the sincere respect of the whole community. She was an active member of the Methodist church and its societies; Pulaski chapter No. 159 Order of the Eastern Star; J. B. Butler Post W.R.C.; Pulaski W.C.T.U., and through these organizations she found opportunity to express her attitude toward life and work for the betterment of the community. Her bereaved husband. son and daughters have the sympathy of all. Left to mourn her besides her husband, are one son, Harold L. Franklin, two daughters, Irene and Genevieve Franklin; one sister, Mrs. Charles Wood of Parish, and three grandchildren, Charlotte, Judith and Robert Franklin. The funeral was held at the home Friday afternoon with the Rev. W. A. Gardner officiating. The great number of floral tributes testified to her popularity and the esteem in which she was held. Bearers were members of the Village and Water Boards, W. H. Bonner, C. H. Brooks, Claude L. Bonney, Frank Brundage, Tracy Burch and William A. Prescott, and she was laid to rest in the family plot in Pulaski Cemetery. Friends and relatives attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Curtiss of the former Curtiss Bros. enterprise in Richland, died Tuesday morning in Lakeland, Florida where she had spent the winters for the last 12 years. She suffered a stroke from a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday which resulted in her death early Tuesday morning, December 9. Mrs. Curtiss was born in Boonville August 28, 1872, and was married to Jarvis D. Curtiss. Mr. Curtiss came to Richland in 1899 and with his brother, William P. Curtiss, purchased the Averill feed and lumber, business, continuing it under the name of Curtiss Bros. Mr. Curtiss died at his home September 14, 1944, having retired about 15 years ago. Mrs. Curtiss is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Anthony E. Vunk, Johnstown, and two grandchildren, Dorothy and Albert Vunk; two nephews, Burkett Curtiss, Richland, and Earle Richards, Bergen, and a niece, Mrs. Vivien VonHeinz of Hartford, Connecticut. Halsey, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fleming Halsey of Fernwood, which occurred at 10:30 a.m. following a short illness. Besides her parents she is survived by several brothers and sisters. Last rites were held in the afternoon from the family home and were private, conducted by Rev. Charles Bollinger of this village, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Burial was in the Willis cemetery in the southern section of this town. An hour later the death if Mrs. John Jamerson, 41, occurred at the family home on the Atkinson road, three miles west of this village. She had been ill some time with the malady. Mrs. Jamerson was born May 16, 1887, in the town of Richland, where she had passed practically all her life. Her husband is a well known farmer. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, February 3, 1966 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Rites Today for Nellie Clement - Services for Mrs. Nellie Woods Clement, 84, widow of Herbert Clement, will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Foster Funeral Home. The Rev. Frank A. Halser, Jr., pastor of Park Methodist Church, will officiate. The body will be placed in the Pulaski Cemetery vault for burial in Evergreen Cemetery at Orwell in the spring. The American Legions plan to attend in a group. Mrs. Clement died Monday at the Evergreen Nursing Home where she had been a patient since December 26. She had been in poor health for several years. A Gold Star Mother, she is survived by one son, William D. Clement of Pulaski, with whom she has made her home for some time; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. A son, Charles died March 10, 1945 in Iwo Jima. Mrs. Clement was born October 2, 1881 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Phoebe Bennett Woods. She moved to the Pulaski area at the age of four years and attended Pulaski High School. She was married to Mr. Clement in 1913 whose death occurred in 1929. Following his death she remained on the farm near Orwell, which they had operated all their married life, and worked as a cook at the Orwell County Sanatorium. She was married to Mr. Olin in 1898 and spent most of their life in Oswego County in the Pine Meadows area in the town of Orwell moving there in 1905 and going to Watertown in 1945. They noted their 50th wedding anniversary in 1948. Mr. Olin died in December 1950. Newspaper Obituary - (date and newspaper unavailable) - Pulaski, September 19 - Mrs. Nellie Perry Hicks, wife of John Melvin Hicks of 14 Delano street, died Wednesday evening at 5:30 o'clock at Ideal Rest Hospital, Orwell, following an operation for a ruptured appendix. Mrs. Hicks was taken ill last Thursday but her condition did not become serious until Sunday when she was taken to the Orwell hospital and an operation performed that evening. She seemed to rally but her condition became worse Tuesday. Mrs. Hicks was born in Fernwood, April 13, 1874, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Perry. She was a graduate of Pulaski Academy and the training class of the academy. For several years she taught the primary department in the Fernwood school. About 10 years ago the family moved to Pulaski. The deceased was a member of the First Methodist church, Pulaski, and of the Women's Civic Club. She was a former member of the Fernwood Methodist church, where she taught a Sunday school class and was active in the Ladies Aid Society. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. K. F. Curtis of Syracuse and Miss Vivian Hicks, teacher of the eighth grade, Central Square High school; one brother, Ernest Perry of Fernwood, and one grandson, Herbert Melvin Curtis. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house, with Rev. John Warren, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Willis cemetery, Fernwood. He operated that as a General Electric Appliance Store until he retired in 1971, selling the business to his son, Carl. Since his retirement, he had continued to work part-time at the store. He was a member of Femwood United Methodist Church and South Richland Grange. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a son, Carl N. of Pulaski; two brothers, Clarence A. of Pulaski and Earl of Fulton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. | 14332 | Nelson Jennings was born in the Town of Parish. His early life was spent on his father's farm. When a young man, he learned the blacksmith trade from the late Lester Pickens. He moved to West Amboy and worked for David Garber, later purchasing the shop and business for himself. In October 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary McLymond. Two children came to this union. In Nov 1899, he purchased the Barber blacksmith shop in Parish where he has since made his home. Several years ago, he gave up the shop to his son, but he kept up the agency for farm machinery. He was taken ill suddenly on the morning of June 18th with an attack of erysipilas. He was not considered serious but was sick only a week, the end coming the evening of June 25th. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Harry of Parish, a daughter Mrs Frank Hammecker of French St, two grandchildren and a brother Charles Jennings of Cleveland, N.Y. Nelson was born September 22, 1938, in Pulaski, the son of Carl and Cynthia Wadsworth Atkinson. He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1956 and attended Onondaga Community College. Nelson was married to his wife of 65 years, Janice Scott Atkinson, on August 20, 1960, at Park United Methodist Church in Pulaski. He was a sales representative, selling construction and farm equipment, for 35 years. Prior to that, he was employed by Fulton Boiler Works and Douglaston Manor. Nelson was a devoted family man to his sons and grandchildren, coaching Little League and Pulaski-Sandy Creek church league basketball for many years. At one time Nelson served as president of both the Sports Booster and Band Booster clubs at PACS. He was also an active community volunteer serving as past president and member of the JayCees and on the Pulaski Village Water Board. Nelson was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching SU, the NY Giants, NY Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers. In high school he played football, baseball and basketball. In his later years, Nelson was a member of the Elms Golf Club and played in many leagues. Surviving are his wife, Janice of Pulaski, four sons, Jeffrey (Karen) Atkinson of Canandaigua, Michael (Kathryn) Atkinson of Philomont, VA, Peter (Barbara) Atkinson of Orwell, and Scott (Beth) Atkinson of Orlando, FL, grandchildren, Ian Atkinson, Christopher Atkinson, Samuel Nelson Atkinson and Carissa Martin, his brothers, Larry (Kay) Atkinson of Pulaski, Donald (Karen) Atkinson of Wesley Chapel, FL and Tom (Dorothy) Atkinson of Kortright, NY and several nieces and nephews. Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, February 22, 1997 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Nettie L. Ostrander, Retired Food Service Worker - Nettie L. Ostrander, 100, formerly of Springbrook Apartments, died Wednesday at the Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge, where she had resided for two months. Mrs. Ostrander was a food service worker at Pulaski Central School for 20 years, retiring in 1967. Previously, she worked at the five-and-dime store, Jack's Restaurant and the Regal Paper Co., all formerly in Pulaski. Born December 15, 1896, in Ogdensburg, daughter of Napoleon and Ellen Gilbert LeBeau, she attended school in Pulaski, where her family had moved in 1900. She married Dan L. Ostrander on December 15, 1915, in Fernwood with the Rev. Paul Dunning officiating. Mr. Ostrander died July 2, 1975. Mrs. Ostrander was a member of the Pulaski Baptist Church and the Silver Crest Rebekah Lodge, Mexico. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth H., Pulaski, and Frank J., Constantia; three daughters, Ruth Wells and Jane Barney, both of Johnstown, and Dorothy Endsley, Redfield; a sister, Ellen Lambert, Hendersonville, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. A spring funeral will be at a time to be announced. Spring burial will be in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood. Arrangements are with Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Southwell Martin, she was a graduate of Pulaski Academy and Central School and resided most of her life in Richland and Dugway. She was a cook with C&M Diner and the Chatterbox Restaurant. Mrs. Hilton died Thursday at Roselle Park Memorial Institute at Buffalo where she had been a patient three weeks. She had been hospitalized at Oswego five weeks prior to going to Buffalo. Besides her husband she is survived by her father, Demmon Haile of Richland; two sisters, Mrs. Glenn (Edna) Novak of Pulaski and Mrs. Reba Briglin of the state of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hilton was born in Richland, September 10, 1919 the daughter of Demmon and Louisa Rich Haile. She attended school at Richland and was married to Mr. Hilton October 22, 1955 in Pulaski. Born Oct. 8, 1917, in Worth, daughter of Frank E. and Anna Murray Kellar, she was a life resident of Pulaski and attended Pulaski schools. She married Harold L. Robinson on June 19, 1937. He died Sept. 24, 1996. Surviving are three daughters, Deanne Manwaring and Donna Archer, both of Pulaski, and Dawn Robinson, Syracuse; a son, Merwin "Vern," Pulaski; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. A brother and three sisters died before her. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Altmar.
