161 "A Fulton man, who used a wheel chair, died Tuesday from injuries he suffered after apparently dropping a cigarette on himself the previous night and setting a blanket on fire, city police and fire officials said.
Jerry Kerfien, 48, was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office, Fulton Deputy Police Chief Peter Franco said.
City firefighters responded at 9:48 p.m. Monday to a fire at Apartment G-2 at Pathfinder Courts on Emery Street, Fire Chief Anthony Gorea said.
One of Kerfien's relatives, who declined to give her name, said Kerfien used a wheelchair because of [Baker's] Muscular Dystrophy.
The fire was confined to the chair, which was in the living room, Gorea said. Kerfien suffered second and third degree burns.
...
Kerfien was taken to A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital before he was taken to the burn center at University Hospital in Syracuse."

163 "Aunt Ted" as she was known, was much loved throughout the family, and in her hometown of Pulaski, NY. Hazel came to Pulaski to work at the age of 15 for the Betts family on Jefferson St. She met John Bentley a few years later and the two were married.
The Bentleys moved into a home on Bridge St., and from there and the Community Hospital across town, Teddy delivered many 100s of babies as a midwife. The community gave Teddy a citizenship award in her later years, and many of her "deliveries" often stopped in to see her.
Hazel and John used to have tame raccoons that came into the house to get something to eat. Many photos of these "pets" survive.
Aunt Ted was the keeper of much of the family history, and used to talk to many of us about Grandpa Smith and the Civil War. Visits to her cozy home are among the earliest memories of this writer.

CURRENT NEWS

WEEKLY RECORD OF CRIME.

Nathan Orlando Greenfield was executed at Syracuse, N.Y., for the murder of his wife, Alice, at Orwell, Oswego county, in October, 1875. The case is remarkable for the stubborn contest made in the courts. Three trials were had, the jury disagreeing once, and twice finding him guilty. Three death sentences were passed upon Greenfield, and five stays and reprieves were obtained. After so many escapes from the gallows Greenfield was confident he would not be hanged, and gave up the hope of commutation only under the gallows. The prisoner's father insisted on standing by him to the last, declaring him innocent. This the sheriff refused as unlawful.
