| 15101 | Newspaper Obituary - Erie Times-News, PA, Mon, 15 Oct 2007 - June E. Sprake June E. Sprake, 83, of 2314 Sassafras Street, died Sunday, October 14, 2007, at Saint Vincent Health Center. She was born in Erie on August 29, 1924, daughter of the late Joseph and Christina Brown Hughson. She was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School. Mrs. Sprake worked at the Lutheran Home both as a nurse's aide and a dietary technician for 18 years. June was also a volunteer at the Lutheran Home for 12 years and was always there for her family and her friends. Her greatest joy was helping other people. She was a former member of the Delaware Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. Later she became a member of Summit United Methodist Church and formerly sang in the choir there. She loved watching her grandchildren wrestle, and was an avid football fan and follower of the Cleveland Browns. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sprake; a sister, Elizabeth Grubbs; and a brother, Willis Hughson. She is survived by two sons, Dennis Sprake and his fiancee Fran Donetelli, and Richard Sprake and his wife Debbie all of Erie; two daughters, Christine Sprake and her husband Terry of Edinboro, and Diane Cornelius and her husband Dennis of Waterford, a sister, Nancy Smith of Rochester, N.Y. Further survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a service there Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Vincent Pomeroy officiating. Denny, aged about 50 years, whose home is at 825 Ford avenue, passed away at about 11 o'clock last night at Hepburn hospital where he underwent an operation serveral days ago. Mr. Denny was employed as foreman at the Ogdensburg Pulp Terminal, where he had been working for some years. He was the son of Benjamin Denny, who is now living in Oswego. Franklin at Family Home - The funeral of William J. Denny, 49, who died at the Hepburn hospital at 11 o’clock Thursday night, will be held at the family home, 825 Ford avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Lewis P. Franklin, acting rector of St. John’s church, will officiate. The body will be place in the vault at the Ogdensburg cemetery. Mr. Denny was taken to the hospital last week to undergo an operation for abscess under his knee, which had given him great pain. He was making good progress toward recovery when pneumonia developed and this was the cause of his death. Mr. Denny was employed as foreman at the Ogdensburg Pulp wood terminal the past fourteen years and was highly regarded by his employers, who paid a tribute to his ability and faithfulness to duty. He was a man of great physical strength and could perform unusual feats of endurance. A few years ago he was buried under a mass of falling logs and when extricated, insisted on returning to work. He remained on the job for several hours and when examined by a physician was found to have three fractured ribs. Mr. Denny held the esteem and confidence of his employers and the men whom he directed and all joined in expressions of sincere sorrow on his death. Mr. Denny was born in Oswego, a son of the late Benjamin Denny, and came to Ogdensburg in his youth. He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Percy Robinson and Mrs. Clara Beldock; two sons, Howard and Theodore, all of Ogdensburg; three brothers, Grant, Joseph and Frank of Oswego, and three sisters, Mrs. Marion Streeter, Mrs. Stephen Filardeau of Syracuse and Mrs. Archie Denny, of Ogdensburg. | Denny, William J. Mattison, 77 - Samuel Gleason Mattison, a prominent Eastern Oswego County farmer, died at his home in the Seamans district, near Altmar, yesterday morning, following several months of declining health. Mr. Mattison was born in Shaftsbury, Vermont, February 12, 1856, son of Albert and Hannah Gleason Mattison. When a child of four his family came to the Town of Albion where he has since lived. He was a well known and successful farmer specializing in raising Holstein-Friesian cattle. As a Republican, he took an active part in politics for years, at one time serving his town as highway commissioner, and for 12 years; he was a special state game warden. He was a member of Altmar grange and an attendant at the Episcopal church, in Altmar. On November 29, 1882, he married Miss Richardson who survives him. Other survivors are five grandchildren, children of his son, George Mattison who died two years ago. He also leaves a brother, John Mattison of Pulaski, and a sister, Miss Sophia Mattison of Miami, Florida.Funeral services will be held from his late home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Frederick Meyers of Camden, rector of the Episcopal church of Altmar, will officiate. Burial in Altmar cemetery. Newspaper Obituary - February 08, 1934 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Samuel Gleason Mattison - Samuel Gleason Mattison, for many years a prominent breeder of Holstein-Friesian cattle, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, 1934, at his home in the Seamans's district near Altmar. He was an active member of Altmar grange and attended the Episcopal church. For 22 years he was a special game protector here. An active ??? as long as his health permitted him to take part in ???, he was highway commissioner for the town of Albion for six years. Mr. Mattison would have observed his 78th birthday anniversary Feb. 12, having been born in 1856, son of the late Albert and Hanna Gleason Mattison. He had spent his life in the vicinity of Altmar. He married the former Miss Alice Richardson, Nov. 29. 1882, and she survives him, with five grandchildren, children of their son, George C. Mattison, who died two years ago. Mr. Mattison also leaves one brother, John, Pulaski, and one sister, Miss Sophia Mattison, Miami, Florida. Services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at his home. Rev. The funeral was held Thursday at 1 p.m. in his home with Rev. Ivan Greenfield of Rome officiating. Burial will be in Orwell cemetery. Mr. Woolson's car became stuck in the snow during last week Monday's storm, and after shoveling for a time in an attempt to free it, he abandoned the car and then walked home. Entering the house, he fell on the floor and died almost immediately. Death was caused by coronary occlusion. Mr. Woolson was the son of Allie and Nina Look Woolson of Richland, who survive together with his wife and children, Walter Woolson of Delphi Falls, Mrs. Wilma Currier and Rex Woolson of Richland, Robert, Clinton Jr., Barbara, and Gladys Woolson all residing at home and a brother, Claude Woolson of Richland - Native of Orwell - Mr. Woolson was born Nov. 13, 1903, at Orwell. He was employed as a welder by the Fitzgibbon Boiler company in Oswego and then was shop foreman at the Ruder Buick company at Pulaski. He had worked for Eastman brothers since last spring. Mrs. Smith, has been very feeble for a number of years. On the first of January she appeared worse and Dr. Low was called and pronounced it a stroke from which she died January 22d. Her funeral was held at the school house. Rev. L. Clark officiated. He took his text, Eccl. xii., 13th verse, "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." Mrs. Smith's parents were among the first settlers of Richland. They moved from Canada and settled near the mouth of Snake Creek, when this town was a dense forest and the nearest grist mill was in Rome. During his 48-year career in railroading, Mr. Narewski also was employed with the New York Central Railroad. Dence, 83, Lake Road, died Sunday at Loretto Nursing Home, Oswego. Mr. Dence served in the Air Force and then the Air National Guard at Hancock Field, Syracuse, from 1941 until his retirement in 1976. Born April 16, 1921, in Syracuse, son of Loren and Ethel Place Dence, he graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1940. He married Margaret Caufield in 1977. A previous marriage ended in divorce. He was a life member of Cable Trail Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8534 in Lacona, where he served as quartermaster and chaplain. He was a member of Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358 in Pulaski, a member and past master of Sandy Creek Grange 127, a former chief of Clay Volunteer Fire Department and a life member of Oswego County Fair Association. Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, Robert Jr. and Bonnie, Sandy Pond; a daughter and her husband, Desiree and Wayne Unnerstall, Hollister, Mo.; two stepsons, Randy Wilder, Sandy Creek, and Ronald Wilder, Syracuse; a sister, Dorothy Lepinski, Clay; four brothers, Fred, Clay, Harry, Oneida, George, Oswego, and Charles, Florida, 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Robert was in the Marine Corps from 1969 to 1970. Robert worked for several phone companies in upstate New York and in Florida. He also worked as an electrician and as an electrical inspector before retiring. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing and traveling. Robert is survived by his wife of four years, Jean (Baker) Groff; a son and daughter-in-law Roland and Melissa Groff of Pulaski, New York; two step-daughters - Christine and Craig Proper of Carlisle, PA and Deborah and Sandy Lamb of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; seven siblings -Brian and Robin Groff, Della and Stanley Loomis, Brenda Hall, Cindy Kingsley, all of Mannsville, NY; Karen and Richard Remington of Ellisburg, NY; Donna and Charles Young of Henderson, NY; and Rosalind and Timothy Redden of Sandy Creek, NY. Feb. 5 - Sedgwick Howlett, 62, night watchman at the Clayville Foundry & Machine Company, was instantly killed when he was struck by a D. L. & W. train early Friday morning while walking along the tracks toward this village on his way home from work. Mr. Howlett was born at Sandy Creek and had been a resident of this village for the last 23 years. He had been employed as night watchman at the Sauquoit Knitting Company for 17 years and had been engaged in a like capactiy by the Clayton Foundry for four years. He married Ina Miller of Uitca in 1891. Besides his wife, he leaves eleven children: Frank, Utica; William, Pulaski; Mrs. Mildred Smith, Clayville; Carl, Ruth, Arthur, Erma, Albert, Russell, Francis and Mary, Sauquoit; two brothers, Harley and Charles, Pulaski. The funeral was held from the home Monday at 2:30 p.m. with interment in Sauquoit Valley cemetery. Mr. Howlett's son and two brothers went to the funeral. Deceased once lived in Pulaski and was employed by Charles Tollner at the Tollner Box Factory. Train at Sauquoit -Sedgwick Howlett, 62, night watchman at the Clayville Foundry & Machine Company, was instantly killed when he was struck by a D. L. & W. train early Friday morning while walking along the tracks toward this village on his way home from work. Dr. A. P. Clark, New Hartford, was summoned and he called Dr. O. W. Burhyte. Examining the body they found a fractured skull, fracture of the right leg, two fracutres of the left leg and a broken arm. The train was in charge of Conductor Edward George, who stopped the engine and brought the remains to Sauquoit. James Kite, of Utica, was the engineer. Dr. Clark held an inquest Sunday. Mr. Howlett was born at Sandy Creek and had been a resident of Sauquoit for the last 23 years. He had been employed as night watchman at the Sauquoit Knitting Company for 17 years and had been engaged in a like capacity by the Clayville Foundry for four years. He married Ina Miller in 1891. At the age of fifteen she united with the M. E. church at Pulaski and after her marriage united with the church in Richland. In 1860 she taught school in the Meacham District and in 1861 was united in marriage with Hiram Look, who died several years ago. She is survived by three children, Mrs. N. R. Ingersoll of Oswego, Mr. Loren Look of Syracuse, and Mr. Ben Look of Richland with whom she resided. It is difficult to find words for expressing the Christian mother and friend qualities of Mrs. Look. Few there are of a more loyal faith, truer Christian spirit nobler, loving, self-sacrifice than was Mrs. Look. To say that she will be missed is a mild way of expressing the great loss felt by both relatives and friends. As a devoted husband and loving father, his activities revolved around his family and included various youth group activities and volunteer Little League and softball coaching. Michael also served his community for many years as a volunteer fireman. The death of Mr. Blount occurred at his home Friday following a short illness. He was born May 1, 1852, in the town of Orwell and had passed practically his entire life in this section of Oswego County and had for many years been engaged in farming in the eastern section of Oswego County. Mr. Blount was a member of the Seventh Day Church situated on the Syracuse Watertown state highway and about three miles south of Pulaski. He had always been active in work of the church.
