Her name and memory will linger lovingly in the hearts of her friends for many years to come, but it is on the grief stricken husband and son that the blow falls heaviest. We feel too sad to try to write more than a few lines, and will close by quoting the words which are written in her graceful handwriting in my autograph album: "We meet on earth to part again, All earthly ties must sever; In Heaven, O, what a blessed thought! We meet to part, no, never."

1568 August 16, 1889 ~ Elizabeth Johnson, age 21 years, Married, born in New York, Daughter of Ebenezer and Susannah Moody, died in Pulaski of chronic diarrhea.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 22, 1889 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - In this village, August 16, Mrs. Sophia Elizabeth Moody Johnson, age 21 years, of consumption. The deceased was born in this town June 4, 1868, and was married June 22, 1887, to Mr. Frank Dimock Johnson, also a native resident of this village. The deceased possessed rare charms of person and disposition, a countenance radiant with cheerfulness, of unfailing kindness and amiability of spirit, a stainless purity of character, a conscientious fidelity to duty which won for her since this steam and devoted affection from a wide circle of friends, as was most fully attested by the very large attendance at her funeral and the profound manifestation of grief and sympathy. Just eleven weeks before her death her firstborn, a son, was placed in the joyful mothers arms for his first caress, to claim and share the maternal care. But the delicate constitution of the mother proved on equal to the task of maternal love, and gradually and slowly she sank away under the power of a disease which the skill of her physicians, and the faithful and devoted care of her mother, husband and friends were impotent to arrest. For three years before her decease she had been a faithful and devoted teacher in the Sabbath school. Three weeks before her death, at her special requests, the ordinance of baptism was administered to herself and her infant son. She still anticipated recovery, but when the announcement was made to her a few days before her death, that her physicians had surrendered all hope, with the most tranquil trust, she committed her child to a heavenly father's care and guardianship, and met the conscious approach of death with the most placid resignation, and with frequent expressions of longing for the blessed and internal rest. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Douglas, a former pastor, who had both performed the wedding ceremony and administered the ordinance of baptism to the deceased, with her infant son, assisted by Rev. A. H. Post, the pastor of the Congregational church.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 30, 1911 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Thursday afternoon, just before the evening shades settled over the fields on Salmon River's beautiful south bank where she had lived for nearly half a century, peacefully and without warning, other than the decline which had been going on the past few years, Mrs. Martha J. Douglass fell into the long sleep of death and the spirit took its flight to the other world. Martha Moody Douglass was born in Rodman, Jefferson County, June 11, 1840. When ten years of age she came to this town to reside with her parents. Such an expression of regard as has been shown by her daughter is worthy of the title, beautiful consideration. Funeral services were held at Douglaston, Sunday afternoon, at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. A. Lawrence, pastor of the Pulaski Congregational church, who spoke of Mrs. Douglass' kindness to friends and deep interest in the things of the future life and the hope she experienced as she realized the close of her earthly pilgrimage was liable to come any time. Many from Pulaski were in attendance and friends were present from far away, including Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Hall, Rochester; Mrs. William Hall, Clay; Harold Hall, Manchester, New York; H. S. 1589 August 29, 1886 ~ R. L. Ingersoll, age 67 years, Married, born in New Berlin, New York, died at Pulaski of nervous prostration.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 2, 1886 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died in this village, August 29, 1886, Robert Leroy Ingersoll, aged 67 years. Mr. Ingersoll was a native of New Berlin, in this State. In 1830, when he was but eleven years of age, he removed with his father, Ebenezer Ingersoll, to Sandy Creek. His education was received in the common schools of the country and at Mexico Academy, which institution he attended for a short time. Before he was twenty-one years of age he began business at Sandy Creek, in company with a man names E. Shumway, having first bought his time, which belonged to his father, he being a minor. The business was that of wagon and carriage building. After a time Mr. Ingersoll bought out his partner’s interest and subsequently removed his establishment to this village where he built up a large trade and became quite wealthy. In 1854 he, in company with others, established what was known as the Pulaski Bank. He held at different times the offices of cashier, director, and president of the institution until 1862. Subsequently he became interested in another bank which was and is known as R. L. Ingersoll & Co.’s Bank. Mr. Ingersoll has been the owner of several large farms, and has been largely interested in the wood pulp business, owner and proprietor of the Pulaski sash and blind factory and the Pulaski paper mill. He has held the highest office in the gift of this town, that of supervisor, and also the office of President of the village of Pulaski. He never cared much for politics but was thoroughly immersed in business and was one of our leading and most successful men in a business way. He was of a strong and health constitution, and with all that thoroughness and energy for which he was noted, he prosecuted every enterprise in which he engaged. If he had faults they affected himself most of all, and let us remember only that he was cordial. Generous and kindly dispositioned. A man long and prominently identified with the business interests of this village has gone out from us never more to return. The funeral will be held at the Congregational Church at 2 p.m., to-day (Wednesday) Rev. James Douglas will preach the sermon.

Newspaper Article - Thursday, January 6, 1887 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - The Ingersoll Will Case - R. L. Ingersoll, now deceased and delete of this village, is now very unfortunately brought to notice through a contest commenced to break his will. His first wife, Caroline Ingersoll, several years since secured from him an absolute divorce. Sometime after that event he was married to Mrs. Moody, a widow residing in this village. It appears from evidence introduced that Mr. Ingersoll had transferred a considerable portion of his property to his first wife's children. The balance of his estate, variously estimated to be worth from $5,000 to $50,000 was by will, bequeathed to his second wife, Susannah. The suit above-mentioned is brought by his first wife, Mrs. Caroline Ingersoll. She alleges incapacity, undue influence, etc., on the part of Mr. Ingersoll. The evidence shows much of the family history and also shows that Mr. Ingersoll had been a very active, and intelligent businessman. We are of the opinion that the net value of his estate is very largely overestimated. S. C. Huntington & Son and Don A. King are the attorneys who represent Mrs. Susannah Ingersoll. John W. Shea and John Preston are the attorneys for Mrs. Caroline Ingersoll and the children, who contest the will. The case is before Surrogate F. David. A very large number of witnesses have been sworn by both sides. It is supposed that the contest will be taken by the defeated party, whoever that may be, to the court of last resort. If this proves true, it will be a very expensive litigation.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 13, 1902 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Death of Mrs. Dennis Austin - Mrs. Phoebe Austin, wife of Dennis Austin, died at her home in Pulaski, August 5. Through her death the community in which she has lived for so many years, loses a most estimable lady, loved and respected by all who were brought into intimate relation with her. She was born in the Township of Camden, Oneida County, New York, August 1, 1834. She leaves a husband, four sons and one daughter. The following was composed on the death of Mrs. Dennis Austin: Sixty-eight years, what a long life. She has been faithful and true, a kind, loving wife. Her work in the mortal is finished up now, And the Angels have come to crown her brow. Oh, the long years she has toiled in this body of clay, The heartache, the tears, the trials, day by day. How faithful she's been, how kind, how true; Now the death Angel calls and she bids us adieu. Adieu to this world of care and pain, To us it's a loss, but to her what a gain. For she's gone to her home in that land of light, She has built that home with deeds that were right. Then why should we mourn when death takes from us One who has lived long and true, been faithful and just; Much better than we should rejoice at this birth, For now she's freed from the cares of earth. So bid her God-speed, with a smile on your face, The journey’s not long, it's not a strange place; Her loved ones have welcomed and taken her home, Farewell, dearest mother, no more to roam. Our home will be lonely and vacant the chair, But mother, we know, is free from care; And we will not let these foolish tears fall, But try and remember it's best for all. And gently we'll lay the dear form to rest, It’s worked all done, God knows what's best. And a prayer we’ll offer as we turn from the grave, For strength to live just as true and brave. Our dear old father, so aged and gray, We know that his heart is lonely today. For fifty long years they have walked side-by-side, And he thinks of her now as his own sweet bride. But cheer up, we’ll whisper the secret to you, Don’t mourn, dear mother's not dead, ‘tis true; She’s living and hoping the time will soon come When you, too, will join in that land of song. Mrs. E. F. Austin, Williamstown, August 11.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, September 5, 1900 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Lamb District - James Hardie who died near Pulaski on August 8th, 1900, was born in Kingston August 24th, 1812 and was of Scotch descent. On December 25th, 1834 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Sharp, of the same place. He owned a very successfully conducted large farm near Kingston until the fall of 1875, when he disposed of his property and with his family came to this town where he resided until his death, a period of nearly 36 years. Their union was blessed with ten children, all of whom are living, Henry, of Pulaski; Mrs. Eliza Davey, of this place; Thomas, of Canada West; Edgar, of Wellwood; A. Forrester, of Watertown; Russell, of Oregon; David, of Mexico; Mrs. Lizzie Heamans, of Pulaski; and William, of Daysville. Until four years ago he with his aged wife kept house alone. He was of a good sound mind and retained his business faculties to a remarkable extent. They have resided with their daughter, Mrs. Julia Heamans, where he died. Mr. Hardie was the head of four generations which nearly numbered three score. He was also a kind husband, an indulgent father and a neighbor willing to lend a helping hand at any time or place. Although not a church member he was a great Bible reader and during his last days said his peace was made with God and he was only waiting for his master to call him home, his only regret was in leaving his aged companion. Had he lived until December 25th, they would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. The funeral was held from his late home conducted by the Rev. Mr. Marshall, of Fernwood. Interment at Daysville.
