| 15711 | Newspaper Obituary - Monday, February 3, 1896 Oswego Daily Times - Pulaski - Feb 1. - Mrs. Hannah Mattison, a much respected lady of this village, died last Saturday evening in the House of the Good Shepherd in Syracuse. About one week ago she underwent severe surgical operation for the removal of a cancer, and although strong hopes were entertained by her friends for her recovery, she could not, owing to her advanced age, and physical weakness, rally from the shock. The operation was performed by Drs. VanDuyn of Syracuse and Low of Pulaski. Mrs. Mattison was the mother of Samuel Mattison of Albion, John P. Mattison of New York City, and Miss Sophia Mattison, a popular teacher in our union school. The remains will be brought to Pulaski today. Newspaper Obituary - February 5, 1896 Pulaski Democrat - DIed - Mattison - In Syracuse, February 1st, 1895, Mrs. Hannah Gleason Mattison, aged 65 years and 11 months. Mrs. Mattison was born in Vermont, where she lived until she reached womanhood. She was of New England stock, and inherited many noble qualities which manifest themselves all through her life. She was at one time at the head of the primary schools in the city of Troy., and as a teacher she was a success. She married Albert Mattison, of Vermont, and in 1860 removed to the town of Albion, where she resided up to the time she moved to this village, about ten years ago. About nineteen years ago Mr. Mattison died, leaving her with the care of three children. Some months since, evidences of a cancerous formation were discovered in her breast and side, and it soon became evident that something must be done at once to arrest the progress of the same, or death from the torture of thad dread malady would be the inevitable result. On the advice of her physician, and with a desire to take the chances of an operation, she went to Syracuse and subjected herself to an operation, and in five days she died. Her children, Mr. S. G. Mattison of ALtmar, Attorney John A. Mattison, of New York and Miss Sophia Mattison, a teacher of this village, were with her at the time of her death. She leaves a brother and sister, Mr. S., and Miss Delia Gleason of Troy. Mrs. Mattison was devoted to her children, and her supremest delight has always been to see how much she could contribute to their happiness, and but few people possessed greater faculties in administering to their friends, and even in her last moments she did not forget to leave "good byes" for friends beyond the family circle. She was a member of the Congregational church, and had many times given evidence of a faith which would not shrink when the shadows of life's closing hours should dawn. In her death a home is broken, a community is grieved and a Godly woman has passed to the reward of the faithful. The last sad rites were performed by her pastor, Rev. A. S. Emmons, at the home yesterday at 11 o'clock, and a large circle of mourning friends were present. Beautiful floral tributes were strewn over the casket, giving testimony of the loving remembrance of her many friends who will cherish her memory.
