Guthrie (August 17, 1922 - May 28, 2015) - BESSIE ARLENE RODGERS GUTHRIE, aged 92, passed away Thursday at home in Watkins Glen, NY, where she had lived for seven years. Bessie was born August 17, 1922 in Sandy Creek to Volney and Bertha Roberts Rodgers. Her parents were both deaf, and American Sign Language was a native language for her and her sisters Jennie (Frey) and Hazel (Joyner). Bessie graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1940, and in 1942 she married William "Bill" Guthrie and moved to Pulaski. When Bill passed away in 2002 they had been married for 60 years. As a young woman, Bessie worked for Mrs. Foster in the house that is now Foster-Hax Funeral Home, and later she worked for several years in the cafeteria at Pulaski Academy and Central School. She was a member of the Park United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, always sending cards, gifts, and frosted cookies for special occasions. As a home economist, she exemplified the kind of sustainable values that inspire us today - she was thrifty and resourceful and good at reusing household items. She kept a vegetable garden and canned her own produce, and she was an excellent cook. She took great pleasure in playing hymns and forties songs on the piano, and loved jigsaw puzzles and card games. She was also an accomplished knitter, and was still knitting beautiful dishcloths for friends and family up to the end of her life. Bessie is survived by her daughter, Nancy Guthrie Wilder, of Watkins Glen. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jennifer Guthrie Wilder (Eric Geissinger), Timothy Hartwell Wilder, Joshua Bradford Rossman (Tami), Eric William Rossman (Erika), and Melissa Anne Rossman Cole. She leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, all of whom got the chance to know her. She is preceded in death by her siblings and her husband, and also by her daughter, Janet Irene Guthrie Rossman, who passed away in Pulaski in 2005. A Celebration of Bessie's Life will be held at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home in Pulaski, 52 Park Street, on Thursday, June 4 at 2:00 p.m. Calling hours will immediately precede the service, beginning at 1:00. Burial will take place at the Pulaski Cemetery at a later date. | 15777 | Newspaper Obituary - Monday, October 20, 1969 The Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - One-Car Accident - Pulaski Youth County's 18th Highway Fatality - Pulaski - James Lyle Burns, 17, of 7364 Port Street, was killed about 1:30 p.m. Saturday when his car left a village street here and struck a tree, State Police said. He was Oswego County's 18th highway accident victim of the year. Burns was pronounced dead at the scene near Windcrest Drive by Dr. A. B. Thompson, who said death was due to multiple injuries. He was appointed coroner's physician by Assistant District Attorney Robert Nicholson, who acted as coroner. Investigating state police said that Burns was southbound on the Hinman Road when his car skidded after just entering the village limits, going off the right shoulder of the road and crashing broadside against a tree. The youth was ejected from his car. Investigating were Troopers Peter J. Laun and David J. Reidy of the local substation. Investigator Harlan L. Fox and Police Chief Wally Guay. Burns was born in Syracuse, September 24, 1952, son of Lyle and Catherine Kling Burns and attended local schools, living most of his life here. He was a clerk in the Sweet Supermarket. | 15792 | NEWSPAPER OBITUARY - Mrs. Celia Smith Manwaring, 70, wife of Herbert A. Manwaring of Daysville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Delizon M. Waite, on the Mexico Road, last Thursday afternoon following a shock which she suffered the Monday before. She was one of the oldest and best known residents of the west part of the town. Mrs. Manwaring was born in Daysville March 2, 1865, a daughter of Warren and Lavica Slater Smith. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Madison county returning after a few years to her native neighborhood where the rest of her life was passed. On October 6, 1886, she was united in marriage to Mr. Manwaring, the marriage taking place in Scriba. She was a member of Daysville M. E. church. Besides her husband, there survives her three sons, Ora, of Daysville, James and Warren of Pulaski; three daughters, Mrs. Harold Franklin of Pulaski; Mrs. D. M. Waite and Mrs. William Jamerson of Daysville; one brother, Lewis Smith of California, several grandchildren and one great grandson. The funeral was held at the family home Sunday afternoon, Rev. | 15793 | Newspaper Obituary - November 03, 1960 Pulaski Democrat - Ronald Tanner Killed In Highway Mishap, Sunday - Ronald A. Tanner, 17, was fatally injured Sunday afternoon at the Salmon River Falls road in the Town of Orwell, when a towed doodlebug he was guiding whiplashed, throwing him to the pavement. Young Tanner, the foster son of Mrs. William Howlett of the Richland road, was assisting William Lewis, Jr., also of the Richland road, in moving the 1923 ehasis of a car a short distance down the road. Dr. H. M. McChesney of Pulaski pronounced the youth dead at the scene. According to Sgt. Earl Andrews, of the Pulaski substation who investigated, the accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. when Tanner and Lewis were in the process of moving the old junk frame. The road is a back gravel road, and apparently the chassis flipped in the gravel, throwing young Tanner to the ground killing him instantly. An autopsy was ordered at the Oswego County laboratory which revealed a crushed chest. Services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Vander Hey of the Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in Pulaski Cemetery. He is survived by his foster mother, Mrs. William Howlett of Pulaski; his father, Ronald Tanner of Nevada; three brothers, Donald, Harold and Richard Tanner of New Haven; five sisters, Mrs. John Bentley and Mrs. Arlene Mitchell of Fulton, Mrs. Marilyn Tyler of Cato, Miss Joyce Tanner of Scriba and Miss Joan Tanner of Cato; five foster brothers, Dr. Harlan Howlett of Pleasant Valley, Alfred of Tullly, William of Fresno, Calif., Charles of Belmont and Carl Howlett of Pulaski; two foster sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Lois) Roberts of Pulaski and Mrs. Tony (Coral) Rinaldo of Oneida. Holbrook, 88, devoted mother and grandmother, formerly of Pulaski, died Thursday at her daughter's home in Mexico, where she was surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 24, 1920, in Syracuse, the daughter of Frank B. and Kathryn Wilcox Allen. She resided in Pulaski from 1948 until 2005 when she moved to Mexico, spending winters in Arcadia, FL, from 1962 until 2005. She graduated from Central High School in Syracuse in 1938, and she attended Syracuse University. She married Robert N. Holbrook on August 24, 1940; he died November 5, 2007. She was employed by Walker's Cleaners, Pulaski Department Store, General Electric in Syracuse and Sealright in Fulton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Syracuse, a 62-year member of OES #567 Bonafide-Hiawatha Solvay Chapter, and a 62-year member of the Women's Relief Corps. She was also an avid golfer. Surviving: one son, John A. (Joann) Holbrook of Pulaski; two daughters, Madelaine (Wendell) Rowell of Pulaski, and Linda (Glenn) Burdick of Mexico; 11 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
