| 15962 | Newspaper Obituary - Saturday Morning, November 24, 1906 The Post Standard - Syracuse, New York - Two Aged Women Burned To Death In Similar Manner - Body Rested On 2 Chairs - Pulaski Woman's Clothing Ignited With Natural Gas - Special to the Post-Standard - Pulaski, November 22 - As the result of a shocking fatality, which occurred about 3:30 o'clock this morning, Mrs. Asenath Brown Stewart, widow of Simpson J. Stewart, lies dead at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harriette A. Filkins in North street. About the hour named Mrs. Ashton Avery, daughter of Mrs. Filkins, whose sleeping apartment is on the second floor of the Filkins residence, smelled smoke as of burning clothing. She hastily went down stairs and going to the door leading to the sleeping room of her grandmother found it locked. Another door leading to the room was also locked, as it was the custom of Mrs. Stewart to lock her doors upon retiring. Mrs. Avery forced open one of the doors, and as she entered the room of her grandmother she saw Mrs. Stewart lying across two chairs in the room in an unconscious condition, her clothing having been entirely consumed by flames and her entire body was burned almost beyond recognition. Mrs. Avery immediately extinguished what little flame remained about the garments left unburned upon the body of her grandmother and then summoned nearby neighbors, being alone with her mother at the time, the latter being confined to her bed by illness and as the result of a broken rib sustained by a recent fall. Dr. George W. Betts was called by telephone and responded at once, but when the physician reached the house Mrs. Stewart was dead. The room occupied by the dead woman is heated by means of a natural gas stove. Mrs. Stewart arose, it is surmised, shortly after 3 o'clock and then, after partially dressing, lighted the gas in the stove. It is quite likely that she turned on at full force the gas and in attempting to light it her garments caught fire, as the gas when turned on at full force creates a large volume, and when the match was applied the gas becoming ignited, undoubtedly completely enveloped the woman in flames. If Mrs. Stewart made an outcry for assistance it was not heard either by the daughter, whose sleeping rooms were on the same floor, or by the granddaughter. The rubber tubing connecting the stove with the gas pipe was detached from the latter and the flame followed up to the pipe and was omitting a large flame which was extinguished by Mrs. Avery after caring for her grandmother. Mrs. Stewart was about 88 years old, and, notwithstanding her advanced years, was of a bright, cheerful disposition, and her death has cast a gloom over the community where she had lived for more than half a century. The funeral arrangements have not been completed. Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, December 5, 1906 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mrs. Ascenath R. Stewart, for many years a resident of this place, entered with her eternal rest after a long and very useful life at about three o'clock in the morning of November 25, 1906. She had risen and lighted her fire for some purpose, and in some way, unknown to the family, death came suddenly to her. When her granddaughter found her she was just breathing her last. Mrs. Stewart was born in Hounsfield of this state, November 2, 1818. In 1830, she was married to Richard Simpson Stewart, and they began housekeeping in the town of Richland. She was converted the following year, and at once united with the Methodist church, of this place, her husband being already a faithful member of the same church. They lived together very happily until he passed out of all earthly fellowships in April 1888. Since that time she has been most happily domiciled with her only daughter, Mrs. Harriet Filkins, of our village, who was also left a widow in 1895. Mrs. Filkins had been confined to her bed for two weeks before her mother's death by quite a serious illness, so that she could not be present at the funeral and burial of the mother, but everything was done by her granddaughters and other friends to care for and comfort her in the sad ordeal. The funeral was held in the home on Sunday, November 25, 1906 at 2 o'clock, by the writer, assisted by Rev. Frederick Maunder, the pastor of the church, and her body was tenderly laid to rest in the pleasant cemetery of the village to await the resurrection morning. Of the immediate family there were present, Charles Filkins, Mrs. Mae Avery who, with her husband, resides at home, Miss Georgia Filkins, named after her father and Master Francis Averill. John L. Filkins, the remaining son, resides in Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Mary J. Lamb, Mrs. Mattie Maston, of Oswego; Mrs. Whipple and Miss Mary Stewart, of Pulaski, all relatives of the family, were present. For some years Mrs. Stewart had been deprived, almost, wholly of the privileges of the church, through the increasing infirmities of age, which she greatly regretted, but she was a very devout Christian, and she deeply loved the church of her choice; and she constantly prayed for her pastor that he might be helped in preaching the Gospel and building up the members in true holiness. She was especially interested in the cause of missions and to it she gave, each year, a very generous subscription. As long as she was able to do so, she took great delight in reading the word of God and in secret prayer; and with all the rest, she grew old so sweetly that her life was a constant benediction to all her family and friends. The better they knew her, the more they were charmed by her Christ like spirit. She rests from her labors, and her works do follow her. S. O. Barnes. | Brown, Ascenath Rowena (I51638)

Twenty five years ago Mr. Hocking signed the temperance pledge and kept it faithfully until his death, even as the end was approaching, he was offered brandy and informed that would bring him through and prolong life, the sick man replied "that between brandy and death, he preferred death." He refused the brandy. Mr. Hocking was twice married and leaves a large family. Mrs. Spaulding had been an inmate of the almshouse here. She had secured Christmas leave of absence from the institution and was visiting a woman by whom she was occasionally employed as seamstress.
