After graduation, he became a "call boy" for the Delaware Lackawanna Railroad, a job that required him to go to railroad workers' homes to alert them that a job was available. It was the beginning of a career in railroading that spanned almost four decades. "He had always wanted to work for the railroad because his father was a conductor," said Mr. Hollington's wife, Mary. Eventually, her husband became a mechanic, a job he held for most of his 38 years with the railroad. Mr. Hollington, 85, of 507 Spring St., Fayetteville, died at home Tuesday after a long illness. "He didn't want to retire, but his father was quite ill and he became his caregiver," Mary Hollington said. The Hollingtons, who both were widowed, met through a mutual friend in 1971. They celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary in August. "He was very good to me, and he never forgot a birthday or an anniversary," Mary Hollington said. "He always sent flowers, on holidays and Valentine's Day. Even after he got real sick and couldn't leave the house, he'd remember to pick up the phone and order flowers for me." A family friend, Lilie Henson, has lived alone for many years. When he could, Mr. Hollington called regularly to make sure she was OK. "Even after he got sick, he had Mary call me twice a week," Henson said. "I thought that was very nice of him." Mr. Hollington was a voracious reader and subscribed to many news magazines, including Time, Newsweek and National Geographic. "God help the postman if they didn't arrive on the day they were supposed to," Mary Hollington said. "His mind was very clear, and he read them cover to cover." Mr. Hollington was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Q. Palmer; and a stepson, Peter A. Palmer of Raleigh, N.C.
