16451 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 23, 1879 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - Doane - In this village, January 15th, 1879, Mrs. Adelia Doane, aged 74 years. Mrs. Doane's maiden name was Willis. She was born in Oneida County, New York, and was one of a family of nine children, of which for 30 years or more, she has been the only survivor. She came to Pulaski in 1823. May 1st, 1824, she was married to Josiah Doane at Clinton, Oneida County, by Rev. Asahel S. Norton. Two sons and two daughters were born to them. Three children survive her, Mrs. Catherine Stoddard of Beloit, Wisconsin, Mrs. Barney Peck and Mr. George P. Doane, of this village. She was baptized in the summer of 1827, by Rev. Norman Gitteau. The organization of the Baptist Church occurred on June 3 of the following year, and she became one of the original members. Her connection with it was only severed by death. On the 9th of last June, she was permitted to join with greatest and pleasure in the celebration of the Jubilee year of the church, which she helped to establish and sustain. And now, so soon thereafter, the year of her own earthly release has come. But she was ready for the summons, and her cheerful, developed and beautiful Christian life was crowned by a triumphant faith in her last illness, when she was, to use her own words, "Safe in the arms of Jesus." Such a life and such a death are precious legacy alike to the church and to the friends whose loss is her gain. She rests beside her husband, who preceded her on 26 January, 18_9.

He had been attending the winter term of school at Pulaski Academy, but about two weeks ago was taken sick with diphtheria and typhoid fever. 16458 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 26, 1888 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In Pulaski, New York January 18th, 1888, Edward L. Clark, aged 27 years and 8 months. Rarely, if ever has a young man of this village been called from time into eternity, whose business prospects were brighter or whose home surroundings had been more satisfactory. He was born, the son of the late James A. Clark, in the house now owned by A. N. Beadle on Lake Street, May 10, 1860. His earlier education was obtained in the graded schools of this village, at Pulaski Academy and later at Fort Edward. From his youth he was of a gentle, retiring disposition, warmly sympathetic and strongly attached to his friends. His business career began when he entered the Pulaski National Bank in May, 1878 as a clerk. Of this prosperous institution he became a stockholder in July 1882; was elected a director in January 1884 and in September of the same year he became assistant cashier. The deceased was also the partner of his brother, L. J. Clark, in a thriving fire insurance business. His marriage with Miss Susie D. Hanson, of Mexico, was celebrated in June, 1885, just two years and seven months prior to his death. The Rev. Bayless, pastor of the Mexico Presbyterian Church, of which the lovely bride was a member, officiated at the wedding, and by a request of the deceased made shortly before his death, also conducted the sad services at the funeral, and in a deeply impressive manner. Failing in health, Mr. Clark was obliged to retire from active service in the bank in August, 1886. He first visited Clifton Springs for treatment. Finding no relief, feeble and worn by the ravages of consumption, which disease was firmly fastened upon him, Mr. Clark went to Las Vegas and Socorro, in New Mexico, thence to Riverside and Los Angeles, California, and home by slow stages via the Union Pacific, seeking relief, but all in vain. In all his joumeyings he was accompanied by his young wife, whose untiring self-forgetful devotion throughout the entire sickness of her husband has been most commendable. The deceased reached Pulaski just three hours after the death of his father, James A. Clark. Fully conscious of his approaching death, he made a full disposal of all his business matters, even leaving a written request relative to his burial and mentioning also the pall bearers. They were Messrs J. C. Peckham, J. L. Hutchens and F. W. Sharp, relatives, and Messrs G. A. Parsons, J. H. Betts, and C. E. Harmon, the latter of Syracuse. The funeral was held from the residence of his mother, Mrs. James A. Clark, on Lake Street on Saturday last. He leaves in his immediate family circle a doubly bereaved mother, a crushed and sorrowing wife, a sister, Mrs. Charles Peck, of Mexico, and a brother, L. J. Clark, who sincerely mourn a dutiful son, a most devoted husband, and an affectionate brother. Long will he be missed and mourned. Clark, Edward L. (I19310)

16472 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 5, 1882 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Williamstown - We have just paid the last tribute of respect to one of nature's noblemen. Ashbel Orton, an old and much beloved resident of our town, passed from this life on the morning of the 27th, after a short but severe illness, and at 2 p.m. to-day the obsequies were observed at his residence. The deceased was born in Williamstown in the year 1811, and with the exception of about four years, spent his life in this town. He began life as a poor boy but being industrious and active had accumulated at the time of his death, a handsome property, not by being close or miserly, far from that. His life was characterized by liberality. For many years he has been an extensive dealer in lumbar, and had in his employ many men. To-day, one man was heard to say, "I went to Mr. Orton nine years ago and told him I had nothing in my house for myself or family to eat and asked him if he would give me work so that I could earn food for my wife and children. Mr. Orton drove at once to a store, bought flour, pork, potatoes and an axe. He carried provisions to my family and then said to me: "If you know of any place where you can get employment, you had better go there, as I do not need any more help, and pay me when you, if not, I will give you work." This is only one case out of many. Poor people were always sure to get help from him and the noblest feature of all was, it always did him so much good to give to them. One of his last remarks was, "What will the poor people in my employ do without me." In church affairs he was continually giving. When asked only a few days ago by one who wished aid for one of our churches if he had been begged to death, he replied, "No, I never can be begged to death." Rare are the men who act through life upon the principles which have so clearly characterized the life of him whose remains. We have just consigned to their last resting place. Williamstown, New York, December 30, 1881. Orton, Ashbel Upson (I34197)

16484 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, January 9, 1890 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Three and one-half miles southeast of Sioux Falls, at the residence of his brother, W. S. Ferguson, at 12:45 o'clock, J. E. Ferguson, aged 32 years, 11 months and 16 days. The deceased was born in Oswego County, New York, and would have been 33 years old on the 8th day of next October. That such a young man of great natural talent should have been cut off so early in his career seems sad indeed. He received his early education in New York in the common schools and came to Dakota some fifteen years ago, when for nearly four years he clerked in the general merchandise store of C. K. Howard, becoming acquainted with many of the old settlers. After that through New York influence he received quite a lucrative position in the Interior Department, which he held some seven years, extending some fifteen months into the Cleveland administration. During all this time he was preparing himself for a newspaper writer, for which he had certainly great talent. His writings were of a humorous vein and he possessed great ingenuity in the placing of words so as to give them striking poetical rhythm. He was corresponded for many years of leading papers of the country in a more or less degree. He was taken with hemorrhage in Brooklyn, New York, some six months ago and since that time has rapidly failed but his physicians thought he was quite sure to live until spring. For this reason his wife, who occupies a government position in Washington, has not left her home there to attend him, with her other duties having two children take care of. His writings, which together with make a volume, have been mostly under the name of "Jef Joslyn." "Jef' were his own initials and "Joslyn" his mother's name. Ferguson, Jonathan Edwin (I17503)

16489 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, July 10, 1879 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - New Centreville, July 2d, 1879 - The death of Mrs. Rollin Lane occurred on Sunday, the 29th ult. The remains were buried in Pulaski Cemetery on the 30th. Mrs. Lane was sick seven weeks, with alternate hopes and fears for the result. She was not a great sufferer, but required constant attention. She was a good neighbor, a loving mother, and an affectionate wife, mourned by a large circle of friends and relatives. Services were held at the house by Rev. Call of the Methodist Church, Pulaski. Mrs. Lane was informed of her condition some hours before her decease, that excellent woman, Mrs. Gilbert Lane, gently breaking the news to her by saying, "Chick, we fear you will not stay with us much longer." The invalid expressed a little surprise, as she had not yet given up hope, but expressed a willingness to go. In due time she called her family around her bedside, said the Lords Prayer, and said she wanted to go home, to heaven. She gave to each advice, with tokens of remembrance, wishing them all goodbye. Then, her spirit took its departure, and her work was done. The little boy, Eddie, is now sick with the bilious fever. Dr. Low is the attending physician.
