| 16601 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, June 6, 1889 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Obituary - Mr. Isaac Jaquith, Jr., was born in Windham County, Vermont, September 19, 1809. He was one of a family of five children. His sister, familiarly known as "Aunt Julia," is 8_years of age, and resides in Parish. Tracing his life down from its beginning, we find at the age of twelve he came from Vermont (a good state by the way, to emigrate from,) in company with his father and family to Rome, in this state. They picked their way through an unbroken wilderness by the aid of blazed trees. The family to which Isaac belonged remained at Rome for only about a year, then they came to Albion and settled, since which time this has been his home. His father and uncle Peter Henderson were the first settlers of this town making Isaac a pioneer of the county. At the age of twenty-five he married Elizabeth Phillips, on the 13th of November, 1834. Their children were Henry Isaac, born June 25, 1837; Horace Decatur, bom October 16, 1842. Coming down the stream of time, we find him the owner of a large timbered tract of land. He built a saw mill. Here he got out lumber which was used in the construction of the old plank road from Rome to Pulaski. Some of his lumber was sent to Port Ontario and shipped from there to other ports. When in his prime he was greatly honored by the town. He failed at different times the offices respectively, of Supervisor, Assessor, and Path-master. | Jacquith, Isaac Jr. (I22569)

| 16617 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 10, 1881 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - Jones - Betsey I. Campbell, widow of Isaac I. Jones, died at the residence of her son, Lucius, and Pulaski, March 7th, 1881, aged 84 years. Mother Jones was born in Kirkland, Oneida County. She was married at the age of twenty-five and moved to Vernon and thence to Constantia, in this county. She was from Scottish ancestors, and her life exhibited the best features of that nationality. At the age of sixteen she became a decided Christian and for nearly seventy years, her life has been an exhibition of "things pure and lovely and of good report." Her character is well described in Paul's portrait of a Christian woman, "The beloved Persis, which labored much in the Lord." She was universally "beloved." She was "in the Lord" as to her spirit life, and the result was a dignified mien and winsome conduct. It was not soft and languid wishing for the happiness of others, not such work as could be done in the parlor or drawing room. Her hand was strong and tender to minister by sick beds. She "labored much," and her life was spent in toil for others, and her tasks were severe though the heart was cheerful. She was womanly but not effeminate, strong-minded, but refined. She rests from her labors and her works do follow her and the rest is all the sweeter because of the toilsome life. | Campbell, Betsy Isabel (I43729)

E. Gaynor, Correspondent.) - Thursday, March 3, this community was shocked to hear the passing away of Mrs. Fidelia Palmer Austin, wife of Augustus Austin, after only two days' illness. The deceased was the daughter of the late Shubel and Amanda Palmer and was born in Canada, June 30, 1860, coming to live here when a small child. March 11, 1877, she was united in marriage with Augustus Austin, and to this union were born six children. The most of her life was spent near her late home, where she had many true and loyal friends, because to know her was to love her. Her home was ever open and her hospitality royal. She was one of earth's few who apparently knew no trouble, as she always lived on the sunny side of life and greeted all with her bright and happy smile and cheering words. She was an ideal wife and mother, her supreme joy being in her home and family to whom she was ever a watchful guardian. We must not think of her as connected with the past, but simply as one gone on a journey to a new home, and if we, like her, but live for Him, we too soon shall hear, His summons and go to join her in a new city. The deceased is survived by her husband, four daughters, and two sons, Mrs. Edwin Baldwin, of Watson; Mrs. Edward Brown, Misses Ethel and Maudie Austin, Earl and Leon Austin, of this place. Brief services were held from her late home Sunday afternoon, followed by a service at the Watson church. Rev. George Walker, officiating; interment at Beach's Bridge. The floral tributes were beautiful and the entire community join in extending their sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones. Those from out of town to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Cratsenburg, of Chemung; Mr. and Mrs. Morris Genzel and daughter Ida and Peter Burr, of Watertown; V. F. Peebles, of Port Leyden; Leon Miller, of Beaver Falls. | Palmer, Fidelia (I62357)

| 16632 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 15, 1860 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Deaths - In this town, on Thursday, March 8th, Pliny Jones, in the 83d year of his age. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 15, 1860 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - An Old Land Mark Gone - Under the appropriate head will be found a notice of the death of Pliny Jones, one of the oldest and most respected citizens. He was born in Bark-Hempstead, Litchfield County, Connecticut August 21, 1777, at which time the country was thrilling with the startling intelligence of the ingress of Gen. Burgoyne, with the flower of the British army, and every man and boy, capable of bearing arms had gone forth at the call to aid his country in this her darkest hour, and none but women and children were left in the town at the time. Mr. Jones received a good common English education, and in his youthful days, filled the important post of "_ master." In 1802, at the age of 25, he was married to Olive Goff, of Greenville, Massachusetts, and in 1805, removed to this town, then a howling wilderness, and located one mile south of this village. Here commenced, under his hand, the first actual settlement of the Town of Richland; and, without priest, doctor or lawyer, and but _le except his own sturdy hands and determined will to assist, the wilderness disappeared, a home was reared, a family raised and the result has been a long life of industry and prudence crowned with a comp_ in declining years. There has not, perhaps, one passed from among us whose life is more linked to our early history, an_ for the information of those who desire to know, we will state a few facts which will be well worthy of note by those who remember "our forefathers." In 1807, the Town of Richland was set off from Williamstown, and included what is now the town of Sandy Creek, Orwell, Albion, and part of Mexico, of which, during the next fourteen years, Pliny Jones was constable and collector. His lonely rides through thetrackless wilderness to "serve a summons" may well be imagines, but no_ our limited space, described. All his official acts bore the stamp of honesty and faithfulness. In 1816, the County of Oswego was set off from Oneida, and John S. Davis was appointed Sheriff and by his appointment, Pliny Jones was the first Under Sheriff of Oswego County. It might seem hard to some of our present officials to tramp through Scriba's hills and Volney's swamps, where roads were talked of but not to be found, to swim Oswego river, or cross on the ice to serve [line unreadable], but so it was then and it was done. Another fact maybe of interest, that in April 1806, a sister of Pliny Jones was married to Joseph Spades, which was the first marriage celebrated in Richland: and the first birth was that of the first infant child of this union. | 16636 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 17, 1870 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - At his residence in this village on Friday, March 11th, Albert H. Weed, aged 48 years. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 24, 1870 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Albert H. Weed - In the cemetery just north of the village will soon be placed a monument to mark the spot and show the friends, acquaintances and the way faring man where rests the subject of this notice. Death, says Bacon, 'Openeth the gate to good fame.' Our friends ripen, they die, then their virtues appear all undimmed. Were the simple truth told of our neighbors while living, it would sound unreal, when they are called to slumber in the long night of oblivion. We realize what we might have known, we never do. In the year of grace, 1822, of good parentage, and this claim, quiet little town was he born. With the exception of a brief period his life has been spent in our midst, and has been in harmony with the growth and prosperity of his native place. His calling in life was that of a builder, many of our most tasty, substantial edifices, of their beauty and their strength to his genius. Some few years since, he located at Cohoes, where a broader field was found for the full exercise of his abilities, get the care, the exposure, the climate, proved not kind to him, and he returned with health shattered, ill health coloring all his life. Becoming identified in early life with a political party, he never deviated from a straight line of action; some who did not well know him, thought he was a little obstinate, when he was firm, others regarded him as a little unreasonable when he would pursue his own high standard of right. To his friends especially was he a center of attraction. Ever gentle, kind, yet consistent, and matters of importance, his judgment was often appealed to in his decisions were in accordance with its character, just. The past three years he has been looking on at himself and the scenes of which he was part. He has borne every sorrow so briefly, so quietly, had it not been for the terrible cough we should only have thought of the Albert of the olden time. On the afternoon of the llth inst., he sat at the table with this family, the eldest son accepted, in the chair in which they last saw him, and in which, henceforth, they will we see him. At 6:00 PM he was conversing, the father in the home circle, at seven o'clock of the same afternoon, his body was laid cold in an adjacent room. And now with the eyes closed, the light gone, the countenance tells of character and experience both deep and ripe. But is not the study of our dear friend and brother's dead face, disloyal to the sleeper? | Weed, Albert H. (I63374)

| 16646 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 19, 1874 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Obituary - Many of the oldest citizens of Pulaski have lost a warm and esteemed friend, by the death of Mrs. Martha I. Maltby, on Saturday, the 14th inst., in New York City, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Charles P. Crosby. A daughter of Mr. Robert Nichols, of Port Ontario, born in Rodman, New York, fifty-five years ago, she married the late Mr. DeSalvo Maltby, of this town, and during her brief married life, resided here; here, too, in the earlier years of widowhood, she lived with her father- in-law, the late Mr. Anson Maltby. Moving west, she lived in Detroit, Michigan, with her two daughters, who were married. Since 1868, she has resided in Brooklyn and New York City, with her daughter, Mrs. Crosby. An invalid for many years, at times a most acute sufferer, she bore her afflictions with a calm and meek Christian fortitude, such as is rarely beheld. Confined to the house for many months, she was during the autumn much better, but about four weeks ago was attacked with increased severity by her disease, and though attended with the tenderest solitude by her daughters, sister, and friends, she sank rapidly and with great suffering, until she succumbed to peacefully and without a struggle. As she had lived her life, so she resigned it, with calm, honest bravery. God gave her afflictions, and she bore them; God gave her release from them, and she welcomed it. A noble woman, endowed with justness of character, love of duty, uprightness, and a soul clad in simplicity, that best garment, she has passed away from this earth mourned by many relatives and friends. Whom God loves, He takes unto Himself. On Tuesday last, she was laid in the Pulaski burial ground, near the scenes of her childhood, by the side of the husband of her youth, to whose memory she remained true, through a long widowhood. And so she has, home. Peace be onto her. | Nichols, Martha I. (I19127)
