| 16910 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 10, 1891 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Orwell - Sudden Death of a Young Lady - Editor Democrat: - I was hurriedly called last Thursday morning to see Miss Nellie Stowell, daughter of Elbert and Mary Stowell, living 3 1/2 miles from Orwell village. I arrived there in a short time and found her dead, and a great excitement prevailing among the neighbors, who were there in large numbers. No one knew the cause of death. She had been visiting the previous day at one of the neighbors and had complained of some pain and when she returned home, or soon after, went to bed. About 9 o'clock she breathed unnaturally, and her mother awoke her. This was repeated several times. Soon she could not awake her, and called her husband and he thought she was dying and sent for me. I made an investigation on Saturday morning and was assisted by Dr. Cook, of Sandy Creek in making a postmortem. We found death caused by a rupture of an aneurysm in the right upper portion of the chest which caused her to bleed to death. Nellie was 18 years old and was highly respected by a large circle of friends, and too much could not be said to her praise. The father and mother and remaining sister have the sympathy of all their acquaintances. Dr. G. W. Nelson. Newspaper Article - Thursday, September 24, 1891 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Vorea - We have been called upon to part with another of our loved ones and have only one child left the comfort us. One of the best daughters that parents ever were blessed with has been taken from us and we are doubly bereaved. She was too fair a flower for this rude world and if ever there was a pure angel she will be one. No one can ever know how we miss her and our sweet little baby boy who died seven years ago next December. He was just 3 years and 4 months old and Nellie was 17 years, 8 months and 2 days old. Were it not for the hope of meeting them in Heaven we could never endure our sorrow. We wish to thank our friends for their kindness in our time of trouble and assure them that they will not be forgotten. May we meet them all in Heaven is our sincere wish. Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Stowell and Nettie. | Stowell, Nellie (I52729)

Funeral was held Wednesday and the interment made in the Pulaski cemetery. Mrs. Philbrick was the mother of William Philbrick of the firm of Philbrick & Deremo, at whose residence she died. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 11, 1890 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Mrs. Harriet M. Philbrick - Mrs. Harriet M. Philbrick was born in Richland, New York, June 8, 1822, and died in Sandy Creek, New York, September 8, 1890, aged 68 years and three months. Most of her life was spent in Richland and vicinity. For a few years her home has been with her daughter in the city of Syracuse, but at the time of her demise she was visiting her son here in Sandy Creek from whose home she took her departure to her home above. She was an exemplary Christian mother who taught her children in those things which pertain to life and Godliness and whose life and influence have told upon the characters of her children. She early identified herself with the M. E. church at Pulaski, and lived and died in the faith of her Redeemer. Five children survive who unitedly bear the crushing weight of sorrow which rests so heavily upon them. Their names are respectively, Mr. William H. Philbrick, Mrs. Evie Bailey, Mrs. M. J. Deremo, E. E. Philbrick and Mrs. Sarah G. Clock. She also leaves to earth an only sister, Mrs. Emily E. Clark of Lorraine, New York, husband and three children, one son and two daughters, and the rest of her father’s family have preceded her to the spirit world. How beautiful to think that families will greet each other in that land where there are no clouds, no tears to bedim the eyes, no sickness, sorrow, pain or death, for the former tilings will have passed away; and where pure, unclouded glory will be the joy of God’s saints forever. May it be ours to greet the loved, where faith is lost in sight and hope and in fruition. | Clark, Harriet (I66087)

| 16916 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 12, 1878 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Fatal Railroad Accident - A Man Run Over and Killed by The Cars at The Lacona Depot - Particulars of the Fatality - On Friday last n horrible accident, resulting in the death of Benjamin Bull, a resident of this village, occurred at the Lacona depot of the R. W. A O. R. R. It appears that Mr. Bull had attended the fair in company with his wife and child, and on their arrival at the depot to return home the cars were found to be unusually full. Instead of waiting until the crowd could have become seated, or otherwise accommodated on the cars, the conductor started up his train, and, in endeavoring to help a little girl on to the platform, Bull lost his balance and fell with his legs across the track. Seeing his perilous position some bystanders endeavored to drag him out, but were unsuccessful, and the whole train of cars passed over his legs below the knees, mangling him horribly. The unfortunate man was taken into the depot, and medical assistance promptly secured, but his case from the fast was considered hopeless. After suffering the most excruciating agony throughout the night and during the morning of Saturday, at which time he had a sufficiently lucid interval to realize his condition, and give some directions to his wife and family, Mr. Bull succumbed to his injuries about twelve o'clock and the remains were brought to this village in the afternoon by special train. Mr. Bull was a hardworking, intelligent and respected citizen of this place, and his relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. The remains were interred in Leihy cemetery on Monday afternoon. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 12, 1878 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - Bull - In Sandy Creek, September 7th, 1878, Benjamin Bull of this village, aged 54 years. Newspaper Article - Thursday, October 3, 1878 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Verdict of the Corner's Jury in the Case of the B. H. Bull Inquest - We were unable to procure the findings of the jury in the inquest held over the remains of Mr. B. H. Bull, until too late for publication last week The same is herewith appended as a matter of record: State of New York, Oswego County - At an inquest indented this 10th day of September, 1878, for the people of the State of New York to the town of Sandy Creek, in said county, before Henry W. Caldwell, one of the corners of said county, on view of the body of Benjamin H. Bull, then and there laying dead, in the town of Sandy Creek, of said county, upon the oaths of W. T. Tifft, Henry Wright, J. W. Porter, David Salisbury, Byron J. Diefendorf, H. S. Fetch, H. W. Seeley, J. Mareness and P. M. Corse, nine good and lawful men of said county, who being charged to inquire how and after what manner the said Benjamin H Bull came to his death, do say upon oath aforesaid that he came to his death by being thrown down while attempting to get on board of a passenger coach of the Rome and Ogdensburg Railroad company while in motion, on the evening of September 6, at about 7:45 p.m., at Sandy Creek station, and falling between the rail and platform of the depot, in which position he was struck by the steps of the moving cars, turning his body around and his legs across the rail, where they were crushed by the wheels of the moving train. Although a sufficient time was given for passengers to get on board and be seated, for all ordinary occasions, yet in the event of a large crowd, as there was congregated on this occasion, we consider it the duty of the Company to use all efforts, diligence and precaution to secure the safety and protect the lives of their passengers. In the opinion of the subscribing jurors, such precaution was not taken, had it been, the life of Benjamin H Bull would not have been lost. In this instance the number of employees furnished were not sufficient, in our judgment, to fully protect the lives of passengers, and at the same time look after the other duties assigned to them Signed by Henry W. Caldwell, Coroner, and all the above jurymen except Diefendorf. The Sandy Creek News in commenting on Coroner Caldwell's course, says that he merits a word of praise for the thorough way in which he conducted the investigation, for he fearlessly discharged his whole duty as a public officer by introducing ample evidence to establish the facts in the case. Nineteen witnesses were examined in the investigation. | Bull, Benjamin Henry (I28072)

| 16923 | Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 14, 1882 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Drowned - A Resident of Port Ontario Falls Overboard Within a Mile of the Shore and Never Rises - The body Not Yet Found - On Thursday of last week, a man named Daniels, who is engaged in selling fish, sailed into the mouth of Salmon River at Selkirk, and in a very excited manner startled the residents of that settlement by announcing that Ralph McChesney was drowned. Daniels was so much excited that it was with difficulty he could tell his story with coherency. At last, however, it appeared that the deceased had fallen out of the boat when about a mile from the shore, and at once disappeared. His head was for a moment visible just below the surface, and then went out of sight. Up to the present writing, although careful search has been made along the shore and the bottom dragged for a great distance, no traces of the drowned man have been discovered. McChesney and Daniels had been to Sandy Pond to purchase fish and were returning when the accident occurred. As it has been reported that McChesney was intoxicated, his friends went to the place where the fish were procured, wishing to learn the facts. It was there reported that he was perfectly sober and had drank nothing. He paid parties at Sandy Pond nearly $12 for fish, and these were taken to Selkirk in the boat. Mr. McChesney, it is stated, had formerly been addicted to liquor, but for some time had been free from its use, and had repeatedly stated that he should never drink any more. He was about 45 years of age, and leaves an invalid wife and one son of 14 years. It is expected that the body will float in a few days and when discovered, Coroner Caldwell will hold an inquest upon the body to discover any additional facts as they may exist. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 21, 1882 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - The funeral services of Ralph McChesney were held from his late residence at Selkirk on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Clark officiating. The body has not yet been recovered and it is feared that it never will be, as the prevailing winds since he was drowned would have taken it out into the lake rather than to the shore.
