16956 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 29, 1853 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - For the Pulaski Democrat - The following lines to the mother of Mrs. Sylvia L. Griggs, youngest daughter of Gilbert Lane, (deceased,) one of the oldest settlers of this village, on the arrival of Mrs. Lane at Tolland, Connecticut, but a few hours after her death and burial, will be read with interest, for she was well-known and loved in this village. To Mrs. Eleanor Lane on the death of her daughter: She hath going to rest, sweet mother, she sleepeth with the dead; Within the quiet, peaceful grave, reclines her weary head. Thou was not near fond mother, to see thy loved one die, to catch the last, pale, flickering ray, which lit her dying eye. Thou wast not near to see her sink, all peacefully to rest; Where sighs and tears no more are known, nor earthly cares molest. Ah! No, this scene so sweetly sad, fond one, was not for thee, Nor e'en when shrouded for the grave, her cherished form to see. All that thine I may now behold, it is yonder new made grave, o'er which he a birds will sweetly sing and wildflowers gently wave. `Tis there in dreamless sleep reclines, the form of her we love. But the spirit that gave it, Dwells with its God above. And often, though, by eye unseen, 'twill hover round thee here, and sweetly soothe your troubled soul, and check the rising tear. And when at last you shall depart, and all earth's ties be riven, 'twill guide you to that better home, where dwelleth God in Heaven. Letitia N. Willey, Tolland, Connecticut, July 10th, 1853. Lane, Sylvia (I10355)

16958 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 30, 1869 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In Albion, on the 18th inst., Gracie A., wife of Ransom A. Burdick, aged 41 years.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, October 14, 1869 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - On the 18th ult., Gracie A., wife of Ransom A. Burdick, of Albion, aged 41 years. Deceased was born August 2, 1828. At an early age she became a humble disciple of Christ and to the very close of life continued a steadfast Christian, a self-denying benefactor, a patient, cross bearing follower, and an entrust, faithful laborer in every good word and work. Her sweet music has thrilled with joy many hearts in the sacred circle and in the house of God, and cheered many sad hearts with the funeral requiem. She demonstrated the power of the grace of God in not only the perfect patience of her endurance, but her unshaken confidence of her hope in Christ. Almost her last breath was a pathetic, fervent prayer, this demonstrating the truth; Prayer is the Christian's vital breath, The Christian's native air; His watch word at the gate of death, He enters heaves with prayer. fhe largest number assembled on the 19th, being the Lord's Day, we have ever seen in the county on any suck occasion, and the personal relatives, who were numerous, were by no means the only mourners. Her excellent spirit endeared her to a very large circle of warm and devoted friends. She lived greatly beloved and died deeply lamented. At her grave the choir sang with tearful eyes and throbbing hearts the excellent piece, "She is gone, she is gone, Gone to the silent land." May the Great Comforter soothe and assuage the grief of the deeply afflicted husband, who thus mourns the loss of a true, confiding, forbearing, faithful, loving, Christian wife, is the fervent prayer of his sympathizing friend and brother. W. C. Johnson.

16959 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 30, 1869 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In this village, September 29, Mr. Amos Fellows, aged 81 years. His funeral will be attended at his residence tomorrow, Friday, at 1 o'clock p.m.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, October 7, 1869 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died, in this village, September 29, Mr. Amos Fellows, aged 81 years. Mr. Fellows was born in Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut January 22d, 1789. In childhood he received the ordinance of baptism in the _of the Congregational church. He was reared in those social and religious influences that have so uniformly molded the character of those who have been subjects of them to habits of sobriety and industry as to give the state of his birth and early training the appellation of the land of steady habits. In 1814, at the age of 25, he first visited this section, on a tour of inspection. April 28, 1818, he was married to Miss Lavina Holcomb, at Suffield, Connecticut. In 1820. He returned here with his wife, designed to make his future home. He then made purchase of the very farm upon which he has spent his remaining days, rearing a family and circumstances of rare domestic fidelity, seeing the children of his affection grow up in their fair promise, like olive branches surrounding his table, profoundly respected for his strict honesty and fidelity is a man and the citizen, for his kindness and helpfulness is a neighbor, he has gone down to his grave in peace, as a shock of corn fully ripe for the harvest. His recognition and consciousness were remarkably clear to the last. He knew of his approaching end, and repeatedly expressed his feelings of trust in God as his Father and the Savior as his Redeemer. Thus, our passing away our noble fathers, whose strong right hands cleaved the way through these ancient forests for the _ance of a Christian civilization, whose brave hearts and patient spirits, daunted by _difficulties, have prepared for us. The higher privileges we enjoy and built for us. The shelter of civil prosperity and peace that make our land the world's most glorious Temple of Freedom and Right. It is fitting for us, so endowed, to honor and cherish their memories.

16960 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 30, 1875 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - The funeral of Mr. Eli Weed was held in the Baptist Church on Thursday of last week, Rev. J. Douglas preached the sermon. There was a large attendance.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 30, 1875 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Casket -Weed - In Pulaski, September 21st, 1875, Eli Weed, aged 87 years. The deceased was born in Southeast Dutchess County, in this State. When twelve years of age with his parents he removed to Rupert, Vermont. He first came to this place in 180_, and the next year returned to Rupert and was married January, 1811, to the wife who now survives him, they having lived together for sixty-four years in unbroken domestic alliance and happiness, a longer period _ is often recorded in the annals of married life. In the fall of 1811 he came with his wife to this place, with the intent of making it their permanent home. Of the toils and perils of travel, of the privations and hardships endured by these early settlers, we in this day know little, and the very recital of their experiences sounds to us like tales of romance. But the deceased and his wife found, almost as soon as they had set foot upon this virgin soil, that they were surrounded by other and more formidable perils than those of the wilderness. War was declared the following June by Great Britain, and here alone the lakes, separating the British Province of Canada from this county was the distinct line of assault and warfare. The deceased promptly responded to the call of his country, and entered the ranks of the army then summoned for defense. He was stationed first at Sacketts Harbor, and afterwards at Oswego. This he found to be a mode of life quite congenial to his brave and active spirit, and in after years and especially in his old age, he often reverted with peculiar pleasure to this portion of his life's history. Fortunately this war was of short continuance, and he soon returned to his home and to the labors of his calling as a carpenter. He erected the first framed dwelling in the town, and was himself the first possessor in the neighborhood of the luxury of a window set with glass, others using for this purpose oiled paper. Naturally sympathetic, active and helpful, he was especially distinguished for his kindness among his neighbors, watching night after night with the sick while obliged to labor regularly and constantly during the day. He was equally kind in his services of sympathy and condolence to the bereaved, and was seldom absent from the house of mourning or the funeral procession. He attended the first funeral which took place in this town after it became settled by the colony from Vermont, which was that of a stranger traveling through this portion of the country, and made and furnished himself the coffin for that occasion. He was a member of the first committee that selected the grounds for the village cemetery, and frequently performed the duties of undertaker and often gratuitously. In December, 1813, he united by letter with the Congregational Church in this village but subsequently united with the Baptist Church, of which he has long been a zealous active and honorable member. His long relations to that church as sexton, has so identified itself with their house of worship that to many, at least, his very name seems to be recorded in its vestibule and along its aisles, and to be rung out in every note of the sounding bell so often rung by his own hands. Age came at last with paralyzing faculties and the light of intelligence and life but feebly flickered toward their last, expiring gleam, yet, at times, he beguiled his soul as with "a song in the night" with passages of scripture learned in early days. Thus passed away the last one of these earliest settlers and first pioneers, who, with their brave hearts and strong hands first began the work of clearing for us through this p_val wilderness the path of a Christian civilization. Let their memories be cherished with gratitude and reverence.

16967 Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 7, 1876 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Casket - Wyman - In Orwell, September 4th, 1876, Perley Wyman, aged 86 years, 5 months and 20 days. The deceased was born May 15th, 1796, and it has been a resident of Orwell for many years. Mrs. L. A. Gaylord, of this village, is the daughter of the deceased.

Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 14, 1876 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Obituary - The deceased, Perley Wyman, was a native of Connecticut. He was born May 15, 1790, and Woodstock, Windham County, and died at his residence in Orwell, Oswego County, New York, September 4, 1876, in the 87th year of his age. His father, with a large family, moved into this state and settled in Cazenovia. His father, however, soon died, and Perley being the oldest son, the interests of this large household felt into his hands, which demanded his special attention for some years. Indeed, his mother and other members of the family looked to him for counsel and support while he lived. He was married to Olive Dresten, June 23, 1816, who passed on before to the grave some seven years ago. This union was blessed with twelve children, seven of whom are still living, five sons and two daughters. He moved into Orwell, Oswego County March 29, 1817, where he resided until his death. In 1819, while setting a gun in a cornfield, it was accidentally discharged, the contents passing through his knee, requiring amputation. It is said fortunate favors the brave. In 1817 he experienced religion under the labors of Rev. Abraham Leppett, a Methodist itinerant. Hence he was a member of the M. E. Church 59 years, and until increasing infirmities deprived him of the means of grace, was a consistent member of the church. He purchased, paid for, and cleared up 168 acres of land, on which he erected good buildings, with other improvements, which remain to tell of his skill in industry while living. As a citizen, he was esteemed and respected. This appears from the repeated gifts or offices bestowed upon him by the inhabitants of his town. He was Constable and collector several years. He was successively assessor, Commissioner and justice of the peace. This last office he held 15 years, besides looking after the interests of the common schools of his town. His last sickness was very severe and protracted, being much of the time deprived of his reason, but, during the lucid intervals, patient, trusting and hopeful. At length a long season of his probation as a member of the church and servant of the people is closed, and he will return no more to his house. M. H. Gaylord.

16995 Newspaper Obituary - Tuesday, January 2, 1923 Daily Argus - Mount Vernon, New York - Alvin Hocking Hit By Auto - Well Known Resident Was Struck Last Thursday - While in 5th Ave. - Acting as Good Samaritan When Fatally Injured - Alvin Hocking, 47 years old, on 60 South Fifth avenue, died late yesterday afternoon in the Mount Vernon hospital, the victim of an automobile accident late last Thursday afternoon in South Fifth Avenue. Mr. Hocking for years had been engaged in the storage and warehouse business here. His funeral will take place from the Mortuary of Burr Davis and Son, 15 South Fourth avenue, at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Robert D. Hazzard, of 100 Ridge Drive, Yonkers, connected with the American La France Fire Engine company, of 250 West 57th street, New York city, drove the coupe which struck and fatally injured the Mount Vernonite. Advised of the man's death, Mr. Hazzard came her this morning, accompanied by former Mayer Coyne and former Alderman Healy, of Yonkers, and signified a desire to do anything the authorities deemed necessary. Not only did he go to police headquarters, but he also appeared at the mayor's office and conferred with Health Comissioner Purdy. Mr. Hazzard communicated with Coroner Fitzgerald, in White Plains too. So far as is known there were no actual eye witnesses to the tragedy. Mr. Hazzard, who is deeply affected by the fatality, declared that it was dark and stormy. Sleet was being driven by a strong wind through the street, Suddenly there was a crash. Mr. Hocking was pushing a stalled auto truck, which bore no lights. Mr. Hazzard lost no time in removing the injured man to the hospital. There it was realized that the Mount Vernonite's condition was critical. He rallied very little after the accident and at 3:50 o'clock yesterday afternoon Dr. Goodwin notified the police that Mr. Hocking had passed away. Health Commisioner Purdy was apprised and later Mr. Hazzard informed of the man's death. No charge has been preferred against the latter. This afternoon Coroner Fitzgerald will come here to make inquiries into the case. The accident is regarded as one of those which could not be avoided. It was at 5:52 o'clock Thursday afternoon that Patrolman Charles Smith made a report of the accident, having been sent by Lieutenant Curtis to investigate the case. Hazzard tol him that he was driving southerly in South Fifth avenue and when opposite the New York Telephone company's building he struck Mr. Hocking, who was pushing a small delivery auto owned by the Cliff Hand Laundry, of 62 South Fifth avenue. Members of the police department stated today they understood the car was stalled in the storm, and Mr. Hocking was "giving a hand" in getting it started when the accident occurred. Relatives said that it was a stormy night and the laundry companies car became "dead" so Mr. Hocking got behind it and began to push, while his son, Albert, commenced manipulating the spark and gas at the wheel. The deceased lived in this city for about forty years and for more than twenty five years was engaged in the trucking and moving business, building up an extensive clientele. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Leonard and Albert, and a daughter, Miss Mabel, and four brothers, William of Yonkers, Frank of Buffalo, and Edward and James Hocking, of this city. While Mr. Hocking resided at 60 South Fifth avenue, his place of business was located at 2 Park avenue. He would have been 48 years old next month.
