Mr. Ray has been in poor health for several years, but was able to be about until five weeks before his death. He was a great sufferer but bore his afflictions patiently. Balch, 53, widow of Russell Balch, died Monday evening at the home of her sister, Mrs. Harold Kaine at Bennett’s Bridges. She had been in poor health for some time and had been residing with her sister the past several months, prior to which she had lived at Altmar. Funeral services will be held at the Altmar Methodist church Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harley S. Hill, officiating. There will be a prayer at the Brown funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be made in Evergreen cemetery at Orwell. Surviving besides her sister, Mrs. Kaine, are three daughters, Mrs. Nerine Clemons of Orwell, Mrs. Marion Allen of Altmar and Mrs. Faylene Britton of Williamstown; one son, Roland Balch of Syracuse; three other sisters, Mrs. Etta Baulch [sic] of Schuyler Lake and Mrs. Emma Miller of Altmar and Mrs. Orma Bliss of Weldon, California; three brothers, Eugene Wiggins of Altmar and Harry and Niles Wiggins of San Jose, California; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 7, 1952 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Mrs. Belva McNitt, 28, Dies of Heart Failure - Mrs. Belva Twitchell McNitt, 28, wife of Elmer McNitt, died suddenly at her home in the Hinman District near Pulaski Monday night, August 4, 1952. She had been ill for three weeks as the result of a heart ailment and confined to bed but was believed to be improving and seemed as usual when members of the family left her room shortly after 6 p.m. Returning a few minutes later, they found her dead. Physicians were called, and John Schneider and James LeClair brought the Ringgold fire company's new resuscitator to the home and worked for about four hours in a vain attempt to revive her. Mrs. McNitt was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Twitchell and had always lived in the Hinman district. She attended Pulaski schools, and on September 12, 1939 was married to Elmer McNitt of Lacona, the couple making their home in an apartment in her parents home. She was a member of Pulaski Grange and attended Pulaski Methodist church. She would have been 29 years old on October 14. Besides her husband and parents, she leaves five young children, LeRoy, Elwin, Susan, Danny and Gary. The funeral was held at the home Thursday at 3 o'clock, Rev. James Pauley, pastor of Pulaski Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Willis cemetery. He was born December 22, 1879 in Pulaski, a son of Robert and Elizabeth Ingersoll Ewart and was educated in the local schools. He married Miss Clara Dawley here on June 25, 1902. For years he was a cheese maker in the Orwell area and later became a farmer and carpenter, retiring five years ago. During World War II he taught shop in the Altmar school. | 1710 | Benjamin Fennel Hutchins was born April 25, 1874 in Albion, Oswego County, NY. he was the son of Ira Franklin & Sarah (Fennel) Hutchins. He attended Pulaski Union School and graduated with the Class of 1894. Following School Mr. Hutchins went to work for pharmacist Burr Morgain in Parish, and deciding he liked the work went on to the University of Buffalo where he obtained his degree in 1900. Returning to Pulaski, Hutchins went to work for Thomas S. Meacham, village druggist who operated out of a building on the west side of North Jefferson Street in Pulaski that later was well known as the Pulaski Sewing Center under Bud & Connie Haas. In 1919 following Meacham's sudden death, Hutchins purchased the business which he operated successfully until his sudden death on November 13, 1930 in the Village of Pulaski. B.F. was married in 1901 to the former Helen Snyder (1876-1943) of Boylston. Together they had one son, Robert Francis Hutchins (1907-1959). | 1711 | Benjamin Franklin (called "Frank"), son of Benjamin and Rhoda (Niles) Greene, was born December, 1825, in Berlin, New York, died in Adrian, Michigan, July 30, 1863. He resided in Troy, New York, several years, then removed to Adrian, Michigan, where he engaged in the flour and feed business. For a time he was associated with Senator Jerome B. Chaffee, of Michigan. He traded in Adrian under the firm name of Warner & Greene during the gold fever of "Pike's Peak or Bust" fame, Mr. Greene, Mr. Chaffee and others went to that famous field, but Mr. Greene was taken sick, returned to Michigan and died. He was a Congregationalist, and acted with the Republican party. He married Mary Jane Hubbs, born January 29, 1828, daughter of Jonathan and Catherine (Brewster) Hubbs, and granddaughter of Joseph and Jemima Hubbs, of Saratoga county, New York. Kling, 78, died very suddenly at his Lehigh Road home Monday, December 9. He was active until the time of his death. He was born July 8, 1890, at Morris, Minnesota, the son of Jacob and Mary Lemmenter Kling, and grew up in Minnesota. He was married October 9, 1917 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Anna Walters, who died in 1963. Mr. Kling worked as a farmer and at the blacksmith trade for many years. He served as Justice of the Peace for the Town of Richland from 1954 to 1958 when he became a Town of Richland Councilman, a position he held at the time of his death. He almost never failed to attend town board meetings. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Faye (Helen) Fox, and Mrs. John (Katherine) Fish; a son, LeRoy Kling; two brothers, Carl Kling and George Kling, all of Pulaski; and a sister, Mrs. Martha Smith of California; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. In 1905 they bought a farm on the Camden road about four miles from Orwell where they lived until 1945 when they moved to Watertown. | 1716 | Benjamin Snow was born in this village May 30, 1834. He is a son of the late Benjamin Snow, who built the Ontario Iron Works in 1832. Mr. Snow has always worked in the foundry and is one of the most skillful workmen in the country. He is a man of the most exemplary habits in life and a most earnest church man. He has long been a prominent member of Pulaski Lodge, F.& A.M., has served that order as its W.M. and has been its secretary for the past thirty-three years. Pulaski lost one of its most treasured citizens when, on April 28, 1909, Benjamin Snow died. Mr. Snow was born in this village on May 30, 1834, the son of Benjamin and Lovina Snow. He was educated in Pulaski schools and also attended school in Clinton, N.Y. When his education was complete, he entered the foundry business of this village, (then owned by his father) the Ontario Iron Works. In 1867 he married Mary M. Watson, daughter of John B. Watson. They had two sons, Norman W., who died several years ago and John B. who is now residing in New York. Benjamin Snow united with the Baptist church at an early age. His official positions, such as clerk, deacon and trustee were characterized by a devout and faithful discharge of responsibility. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity and Pulaski Lodge F.&A.M. Mr. Snow was a man of modest manner but a strong personality, because of his manifest sincerity and pronounced integrity. His name will be a constant benediction to those who knew him, and his sweet and fragrant life will shed its influence in our church, social and fraternal life so long as those who knew him. A largei delegation of Masons received the body and escorted it to the family home in Mill street. Mr. Snow under went an operation a few weeks ago add he was convalescing, but there was a sudden change and death came yesterday. Mr. Snow was born in Pulaski, May 30, 1834. He wad educated in the local schools and at Clinton, after which he entered, the employ of his father, Benjamin Snow, who conducted a foundry. He was formany years superintendent of the Ontario Iron Works of Arthur. Mr. Snow was a member and officer of the First Baptist church. For more than two decades he served as a member Of the Board of Education. He was made a Mason by Pulaski lodge No 415, In 1856, of which he was a worshipful master. He has served as secretary of the lodge for more than forty years without interuption. Mr. Snow was also a memr of Pulaski chapter No. 279, R. Mrs. Sweet, a life resident of Pulaski, was a member of Park United Methodist Church. Surviving besides her son are a daughter, Janet Fullerton, Odenton, Md.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery. Graney, 86, husband of Beverly Vogler Graney, a resident of Ball Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, died at home on Friday, August 19, 2011. Born on September 8, 1924, in Hoosick Falls, he was the son of the late MathiIda Hoivec Graney and VIAllard Graney. Bernie served with the Air Force 452nd bomb group, flying 35 missions over Germany and being awarded many medals. Following his service, he returned to Hoosick Falls to lead a full life of devotion to his family and service to his community. He was a member of the Derby Club, Hoosick Falls Fire Department, Hoosick Falls Rescue Squad, Kiwanis, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, Pioneer Fish and Game Club, and the Hoot in Holler Club. He was also active with Boy Scouts, the Hoosick Area Church Association food pantry, the St. Mary's Academy Furrtastic Fair, the Hoosick Falls Health Center board, and much more. He also served one term as Mayor of Hoosick Falls, was an honorary member of alumni from St. Marys Academy, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 43 years. He was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls. Bernie was Interested in fishing, hunting, gardening, and beekeeping, and particularly loved spending time with his large family and community of friends. Survivors, in addition to his wife Betty, are his children: Barbara (Randall) Woodward of Miami, Fla.; Rosemary (George) Provost of Meehanicville, NY; Michael (Linda) Graney of Honeoye Fails, NY: Patrick Graney of Ft. He was born in Altmar, NY on August 16, 1939, to Myrul and Gladys Trumble. Bernie graduated in 1957 from APW. He began employment as a laborer in construction, eventually being promoted to Superintendent for Lane Construction. He worked in several different states with Lane, often with his wife, Alice, as Office Manager. Bernie was a life-time member of NYS Trappers Assoc. and National Rifle Assoc. He was an avid sportsman, trapper hunter and fisherman. He was often called to solve beaver problems and his family and friends often called him “The Trapper” or “The Great White Hunter.” He was always available to lend a helping hand to friends and relatives, whatever the project entailed. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice Wiggins Trumble, daughters, Cathy Trumble Cushman and Tami Trumble; grandchildren Natalie Curran, Alexander (June) Cushman, great grandchildren, Rhys & Rhiannon Curran, Grady Cushman and Conner Reese as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. | 1730 | Berne, NY - Geraldine Shipley Becker passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in the presence of her family at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany after a brief illness. Geraldine (Jerry), the daughter of Walter E. and Marion H. Shipley, was born on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1932 in Williamson, NY. She graduated from Williamson Central School and Mansfield State Teachers' College in Mansfield, PA. She moved to Albany County in 1954 to work with the Cooperative Extension Service. She married Maver O. Becker on September 17, 1955 and they lived 54 loving and fulfilling years together on Switzkill Road in Berne. She is survived by three sons, Kenneth, Frederick and Jay, their partners and spouses, Kami Patrizio, Kathy Becker and Shanna Becker, and six grandchildren Elizabeth, Timothy, Aurora, Benjamin, Lukus, and Chandra. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Kathleen (Shipley) Metzler, Ann Shipley and Hugh Shipley. She was predeceased by older brothers Hugh and Ken, and sister Jean. Jerry worked for Albany County Cooperative Extension early in her career. She served as a substitute teacher for the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School District for approximately 20 years and as a bus driver for B-K-W for nearly 50 years. She was an agent with Farm Family Insurance Company for a number of years and worked as a data collector for the Town of Berne Assessor's Office in recent years. Jerry was a charter member and active participant in Albany County Farm Bureau, serving as secretary of the organization for several years. She and Maver were also charter members and past presidents and officers of the Schoharie Valley Hay Shakers, a regional western square dance club. She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for the past 54 years, serving at various times as organist and choir director. She was also a long-time member of the Uhai Chapter of Eastern Star, holding several local and regional leadership positions. She cherished the many deep and lasting relationships with close friends from all these organizations. She enjoyed teaching young people to cook and sew during her early career with 4-H and as a judge at the Altamont Fair. Together, Jerry and Maver shared their love of family and farming and enjoyed their frequent travels across the U.S., and other trips to Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Central America often accompanied by family or friends. She found pleasure in reading, lighthouses, working in her flower gardens, and playing the dulcimer and the organ. She treasured time with her family most of all. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Helderberg Lutheran Church. Two sisters, Iva Bartlett and Eva Sochia, three brothers, John, Alfred and Francis, and a son, Stacy, died before him. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. Burial will be in Ellisburg Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Mr Towles was a self-employed dairy farmer and had also worked at Garlock Farm. He previously had driven tractor-trailer for Pilot Freight. Born Feb 23, 1931, in Belleville, son of Frank and Mabel Hess Towles, he attended Belleville Union Academy and served in the Army during the Korean War. A marriage to June Fletcher ended in divorce. He married Carol Dingman Flath on Nov 17, 1984. She died Apr 16, 1985. Porter, 91, formerly of Sun City, Fla., and a former summer resident of Fishers Landing, died Monday at Janus Park, Liverpool, after a long illness. Mrs. Porter was school librarian at the Huntington School, part of the Northport school system, retiring in 1974 after 25 years of service. She had previously taught in Syracuse and East Islip schools and was also a home instructor for the handicapped. She lived on Long Island from 1934 until the late 1970s, when she moved to Florida and maintained a summer home at Fishers Landing. Born Dec. 8, 1905, in Dugway, daughter of Frank Albert and Jennie Mae Powers Gaylord, she graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1924 and was also a graduate of Oswego State Normal School. She married William N. Porter July 10, 1930, in Pulaski at the home of her parents with the Rev. J.S. Beebe officiating. Mr. Porter died Feb. 9, 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Jean Porter, Syracuse, and Eileen Burrack, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four granddaughters; four great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
