| 17115 | Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 22, 1894 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Sewell Town Gates - Another of Pulaski's aged and highly respected citizens has passed out from among us, but his memory will long be cherished as being a man of rare integrity of character. Sewell T. Gates was born at Winfield, Herkimer county, New York, September 22d, 1815, and died in Pulaski at 3:45 a.m., August 21st, 1894. When fourteen years of age he removed with his parents to South Richland in this town where he lived until 1861 when he removed to Pulaski, purchasing the house where he has lived ever since, of Captain Chapman. Robert Gates, deceased, of this town, was a brother of Mr. Gates. His sisters, also deceased, were: Mrs. Emily Whipple, of Salmon River, and Mrs. Hiram Lewis, of this town. Our townsman, the subject of this sketch, was married to Miss Mary A. Richards, of South Richland, October 15, 1839, and with whom he lived very happily until the time of her death, which occurred in June, 1874. No children resulted from the union but they adopted a daughter, now Mrs. F. H. Cross, who has ever since resided with the deceased. His daughter, with marked devotion, has given him every possible care and attention during his long and painful illness, as also has Mr. Cross and his son, W. G. Cross. Until his retirement from business and his removal to Pulaski, Mr. Gates was a farmer. He was, also, unusually successful in his chosen occupation. For three years in the early sixties, or during the war, Mr. Gates was supervisor of this town. He was very active and efficient in the work of raising soldiers, paying bounties, and in other patriotic work of those exciting times. Subsequently he was for many years an assessor. He had exceptionally good judgment in real estate values, and his opinion was often sought in such matters. His reputation was such that he was often made executor of estates and he always did his work well. For nearly three years he has had a heart difficulty, and when he fell last March and broke an arm he has slowly failed ever since, and until the end came. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at his late residence on Salina street, Rev. A. D. Webster conducting the ceremony. Interment will take place in the South Richland cemetery. | Gates, Sewell Town (I55042)

| 17118 | Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 25, 1909 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Hicks District - On Tuesday, August 17, occurred the death of Charlie Stewart, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stewart, aged 16 years and 5 months. Charlie had not been feeling well during the previous week, but nothing serious was apprehended until Thursday when calling on a physician his disease was found to be appendicitis. Dr. Wallace, of Syracuse, was sent for and assisted by Dr. More, performed an operation Friday. His chances for recovery w-ere pronounced good, and all thought he was doing nicely until Tuesday morning when the nurse, watching by his bedside, saw that a change for the worse had taken place and the parents soon knew that they must part with their loved one. He died early Tuesday evening. The news of his death was a great shock to his outside friends. When they were hoping and expecting that lie would soon be well, his life was fast going out. Everything possible was done for his recovery and loving hands ministered to his every want. His sufferings were severe but he was patient and brave through it all. The funeral was held from the home, Friday at 1 o'clock. Rev. P. O. Wilcox, pastor of the deceased, officiated, assisted by W. A. Wart. The sermon was a beautiful tribute to his memory and all felt with the pastor that each had lost a personal friend. Richard Lacy, Clinton Mamvarren, Raymond and Clarence Murray acted as bearers, and May Nicholson, Vivian Hicks, Marjorie Barnard, Vivian Murray, Sadie and May Reynolds were pail bearers. He was laid to rest in Mapleview-7 cemetery. He has gone from us but the influence of his pure and holy life is with us still and may that influence help in accomplishing the one great desire of his life, that of having his young associates accept the Savior wJiom he served and worshiped. He will be greatly missed by the loved ones he has left. His only brother, who is on the ship. New Hampshire, and at the time was out to sea, was not able to reach home in time for the funeral. The many beautiful flow?ers testified to the love and esteem of his many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire neighborhood. "Come unto me when shadows darkly gather, when the sad heart is weary and distressed; seeking for comfort from your Heavenly Fattier, come unto me and I will give you rest. Large are the mansions in our Father’s dwelling, collated are those homes that sorrow never dim; Sweet are the harps in holy music swelling, soft are the tones that raise the heavenly hymn. There like an Eden blossoming in gladness. Bloom the fair fknvers by earth so rudely pressed; come unto Him all ye who droop in sadness, come unto Me and I will give you rest. | 17120 | Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 26, 1896 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Martha Janet Farmer - At her home near Pulaski, August 13, 1896, at 8 p.m. died Martha Janet Farmer, oldest daughter of James S. and Mary J. Farmer. She was born April 11, 1854 near the place of her late residence. Her life has been unselfishly devoted to the interest of her parents, brothers and sisters. Following the occupation of dressmaker she made many dear friends by her unostentatious ways and careful attention to duty. She will be sincerely missed by her family, friends and patrons. Almost a constant sufferer from childhood, she was stricken with the sickness that finally overcame her, soon after the death of her mother in October. She has borne the ten months of constant suffering with Christian fortitude and surely is deserving of a bright reward. All that doctors and care could do was done but without avail, and it was only a question of time. A postmortem examination revealed fatty degeneration of the heart as the cause of her death. Clement, which occurred at Orwell, New York, August 9, 1903. He was born at Henderson, Jefferson County, June 8, 1838, but most of his early days were spent at Mill Haven, Ontario, his parents moving here when he was a child. The end came suddenly, as his last sickness was of very short duration. His funeral, which was largely attended, was held at his late August 12, Revs. T. G. Davies and Cross officiating. | 17124 | Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 30, 1911 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Boy Dragged To Death - Was Riding on Back of Cow Which Became Frightened and Ran Away - Falling from the back of a cow to which he had been tied by his playmates, Lewis Burns, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Burns, was dragged by the frightened animal around a field until he was dead, according to word which reached Utica from Pulaski. Lewis, with his two sisters, 8 and 10 years old, went out to the pasture to take turns riding on the back of the cow that long had been a pet of the family. It was a sport the youngsters had enjoyed. The cow was gentle and had never tried to throw or harm the children while they were driving it around the field. Laughing merrily, Lewis started off on the ride that was to end his life in a shocking manner. He had not gone far when the rope which apparently had not been tied securely began to slip, the boy tried to ag to the cow's back, but his hands slipped over its hide and he fell. This frightened the cow. It dashed off on a wild circuit of the pasture, carrying the little victim along the ground. Terrorized by the scene, the child's sisters dashed to the house for aid and several members of the family rushed back. Though exhausted by its long run, the cow still led the rescuers in a fast chase. It was finally stopped and the boy cut loose. Hs skull was fractured and right arm and jaw broken. He was dead when picked up. | Burns, Lewis M. (I16262)
