She was born on January 3, 1920 in Rome; a daughter of the late Maxmillian and Leila Tanner Schaller. Leila was raised in Stanwix and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1937. On July 22, 1944 in Corning, NY Leila was united in marriage to Raymond Whitman; a blessed union of 61 years until his passing which occurred on August 11, 2005. She was employed at General Electric and then Betsy Ross Nursing Home. Leila was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Leila is survived by three daughters, Maxine Nicholson of ME, Karen Martin of Rome, and Becky Myers of Marcy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond “Dusty” and Rena Whitman of Floyd and Bruce and Michelle Whitman of New York Mills; fifteen cherished grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Emogene Mowers and five brothers, Maxwell, Melvin, Thomas “Fritz”, Kenneth, and Warren Schaller. Mrs. Whitman’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00a.m. at the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 209 N. Washington St., Rome (336-5700). Interment will follow in Rome Cemetery. Born on September 5, 1932, in Stoneham, Massachusetts, she was the cherished daughter of Portuguese immigrants, Ethel and Silvio Marques. Lou received her education at Georgetown Preparatory School in Washington, DC. She spent many years in New England before relocating to the area, where she enjoyed a fulfilling career at both the Carrier Corporation and the Thruway Authority, retiring as a beloved colleague from both organizations. Known for her indefatigable spirit and an infectious laugh, Lou cherished hosting her large family for Sunday dinners and holidays. Multilingual and a master at crosswords, she loved solving puzzles, the Boston Red Sox, and Betty Boop, and she adored her two cats. Her door was always open, with a pot of coffee ready for family and friends. Lou is predeceased by her sister Dr. Gilda Marques, her son Robert Moyer, her son-in-law Bill Cusyck, her great-grandson Elliot Hardy, and her first husband, Michael O’Brien. She is survived by her six children, Mary Curcio (Rocco), Michele Cusyck, Donna Gilson (Edward), Wayne Moyer (Margo), Diana Collins, Valerie Wicks, 13 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife of 40 years Margaret (Peggy) Bailey, his daughter Meagan Frank and her fiancé Justin Seamans, his beloved granddaughter Lainey Frank, and a daughter from a previous marriage Jennifer Bailey. He also had one surviving sister Margie Hastings. Mark served his community with pride. He was a member of the Altmar Fire Department for 44 years. Mark retired from a long career at the Oswego county highway department in 2012. He truley enjoyed his lengthy retirement. Mary was united in marriage to Ambrose Kulisz, on April 24, 1970, at the Church of the Transfiguration; he died February 13, 1993. She formerly worked for the Rome City School District, Cingranelli’s Appliance Store and the Rome Development Center. She was a member of the Church of the Transfiguration, and Altar Rosary Society, South Rome Seniors, Floyd Seniors, Marcy Seniors and the Floyd Fire Department Auxiliary. Mary was a kind, friendly and generous person, who treated everyone as though they were family. She gladly and generously volunteered her time to many organizations and truly enjoyed the friends she made over the years. Mary is survived by a sister, Iva Mae Goodwin of Pulaski; a sister in law, Valerie Woodruff of Rome; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Canajoharie United Methodist Church. Mrs. Dingman was a member of the Canajoharie/Palatine Garden Club and a charter member of Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service. On January 22, 1944 in Canajoharie, NY, Bernice married Richard Dingman. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1996. She was also predeceased by her brother, Donald Stevens. Gaffey, age 80, of Florence, passed away at Bethany Gardens, May 21, 2012, after fighting a courageous 4 year battle with cancer. He was born at home on May 31, 1931, in Florence, NY, a son of William and Clara Mulvaney Gaffey. He attended a one room school house in Osceola walking to school through deep snow - uphill all the way - to and from school as he liked to tell. He also attended school in Camden . In 1949 Bill enlisted in the US Marie Corp. He was discharged in 1950 bit was recalled in 1951 and honorably discharged in 1952. He is a life time member of the Marine Corp League -LZ Old Corps Detachment 999. Bill was also a member of the Teamsters Union Local #182 having been employed at Coleman Brothers Trans Lines from April 1952 until its sale to Red Star Express in 1976 after a devastating fire. Bill was an ace mechanic - taking great pride in his work. “If you aren’t going to do it right -don’t do it.” He retired in 1988 to work on his pride and joy - his log cabin in God’s country. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating and fishing, 4 wheeling, going out to breakfast on Sunday AM with his buddies and playing cards. On November 25, 1954 Bill was united in marriage to Joanne Dunn, in St. Mary of the Assumption Church - a union of more than 57 years. William is survived by his wife Joanne: a daughter and son in law, Virginia and Carney Hall; four sons and daughters in law, William P. and Josephine Gaffey, John and Ludmila Gaffey, Alan Gaffey and friend Trinna, and Jeffrey Gaffey and fiancé Dana Sharron. Alos surviving are 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Also surviving are his brother and sister in law, David and Mary Gaffey of Altmar - sisters, Ruth Gaffey of Utica, Irene King of Ledyard, CT and Imogene Finnerty of Williamstown. He was predeceased by his parents, half-sisters, Ereine York, Leona Lindsey; half-brother, Joseph Mulvaney; sister, Dorothy Reesh, twin brothers John Norman and James Thomas shortly after birth. He was also lost his courageous granddaughter Theresa Marie Gaffey at age 25 years of cancer. Mr. Messerschmidt worked for 43 years at Reading Railroad Co. in Philadelphia, having retired in 1986. He served in the Pennsylvania State Guard. He was a Phillies baseball fanatic and watched or attended all of the games that he could. He enjoyed bowling, cooking and entertaining. His proudest accomplishment in life was raising his family, and throughout life he put this before all other goals. Mr. Messerschmidt was a member of Solomon's Lodge #3, F&AM, Philadelphia, PA. Adelbert was born February 17, 1949 in Pulaski the son Willis and Dorothy Hill Higby. He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1967 and served in the United States Air Force from 1968 until 1972. He was married to Lind Lee Moler in 1973 and she passed away in 1984. Adelbert was employed by the Department of Defense in Baltimore and he was a medical transport driver for many years. He was a member of the Robert Edwards American Legion Post #357 in Pulaski. He served as a deacon at New Hope Baptist Church where he was a member for over 20 years. His favorite hobbies included fishing, playing Santa for his church, and hunting. When he wasn’t watching old westerns, he was entertaining the grandkids. He loved his grandchildren; they were the world to him. He never missed one of their celebrations or games if he could help it. He was always their loudest cheerleader. He was a great Husband, father, Papa and friend. He will be missed by many. Joss Arlene Nellie Stevens Davey Joss, age 86, resident of Pulaski, formerly of Altmar, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. She was born August 19, 1933 in Syracuse, the daughter of Leon and Clara Belle Fisher Stevens. Arlene was the. Youngest of seven children. L.D. (Pete), Bruce, Bernice, Florence, William and Greta. Her parents were killed July 8, 1940 in an automobile accident by a drunk driver. She was raised by her mother’s sister, Mildred Fisher Tobin. Arlene attended school in Syracuse and graduated from Blodgette Vocational School. She previously worked for Syracuse Supply and Carrier Corp. Arlene was married to Lloyd Raymond Davey on June 1, 1958. Together they were self-employed dairy farmers that raised Jersey cows for 36 years until his passing on April 18, 1993. On October 28, 1995 Arlene was remarried to Edison Charles Joss and he passed away June 14, 2012. Arlene attended the Vorea Community Church, the Pulaski Wesleyan Church and, most recently, the Fellowship Baptist Church in Colosse. She loved to watch her daily soap operas and game shows. Arlene was known to send greeting cards and notes to everyone, for all occasions, up until her passing. Arlene enjoyed feeding and watching her birds and planting her gardens. She was an animal lover and was happiest with a cat on her lap. She attended Pulaski’s gym, Ontario Health & Fitness for many years and stayed active in her later years doing physical therapy. Arlene cherished her time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are one son, Raymond Daniel Davey of Altmar, one sister, Florence “Flo” Dickerson of Groton, NY, her brother, William “Bill” Stevens of Manlius, her Stevens family, her Tobin family, her Davey Family, her Joss family and her church family. Arlene was predeceased by her four siblings and her beloved cats, Lucky, Patches, Dusty, Teddy and her dog Princess. | 17870 | Obituary of Barbara Jane Krupke Barbara Jane “Jane” Krupke, age 83, resident of Pulaski, NY, passed away Monday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse of respiratory complications. Jane was born July 7, 1936 in Watertown, the daughter of Henry B. and Bessie (Wilbur) Adams. She graduated from Adams High School in 1954. Jane was a loving, devoted wife to Charles “Chuck” Krupke for 63 years. They were married October 12, 1957. Chuck also passed away on April 6, 2020. Together they owned and operated the Redwood Motel in Pulaski from 1973 until 2006. They also owned Krupke’s Ice Cream from 1963 until 1979. Her strong Catholic faith was an important part of Jane’s life. She was a member of Christ Our Light Parish in Pulaski and served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Through the years Jane enjoyed knitting, sewing, traveling and playing golf and cards with friends. Jane adored her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved hosting parties and family gatherings at their home on the Salmon River. She was famous for making the family’s favorite spaghetti sauce and homemade candy at Christmas. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and will be missed by all who met her. Surviving are two sons, Daniel (Sylvia) Krupke of Pulaski and William (Julie) Krupke of Green Cove Springs, FL, one daughter, Becky (David) Thomas of Belleville, daughter in-law, Patricia Krupke of Clay, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Surviving besides his wife Samantha, are two sons Caleb and Cameron Silsby, Pulaski; his parents Buddy and Sue Silsby, Adams; mother in law Linda Booth, Pulaski; father in law Larry Stewart, Pulaski; two brothers Jason and Jacob Silsby; one sister Nicole (Robert) Hutchins, Watertown; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She found hours of entertainment in crossword books as well as BINGO outings and visiting with her dear friend, Joan Wozniak. She loved her husband, her family, all babies, and animals. She had also volunteered her days to Laura Sharp Elementary School's former Material Center. The Hemlock Haven family was a large part of her life as she worked every Christmas season making and decorating holiday goods. Bird watching, country living, cruising vacations with many of her friends and being a family fixture at Rainbow Shores were among her passions. Carol is survived by her husband Dean A. Upon returning to work, Catherine was employed by OCO in Fulton as a family coordinator for 28 years and a ballet instructor for several years. She was a member of the Congregational Church and a dancer at the Syracuse Ballet Theater. Clark on October 15, 1947 and he passed away July 25, 2000. She was retired from Hancock Field in Syracuse from the commissary after 22 years of service. Charles was employed by General Electric in Syracuse for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He also owned a dairy farm for 12 years and was employed by Healthway for several years. | 17884 | Obituary of Charles H. Krupke Charles “Chuck” H. Krupke, age 82, resident of Pulaski, NY, passed away Monday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse of respiratory complications. Charles was born January 22, 1938 in New Britain, CT, the son of Eric and Muriel (Turgeon) Krupke. He graduated from Altmar High School in 1956. Chuck adored his wife of 63 years, Barbara “Jane” Adams. They were married October 12, 1957. Jane also passed away shortly after her husband on April 6, 2020. Together they owned and operated the Redwood Motel in Pulaski from 1973 until 2006. They also owned Krupke’s Ice Cream from 1963 until 1979. Chuck’s life was guided by a strong Catholic faith, he was a member of Christ Our Light Parish in Pulaski where he served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Chuck was very committed to and actively served his community in various roles. He was a founding member and served on the board for ConnextCare, formerly NOCHSI. He was past president of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail and past president of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce. In his spare time Chuck enjoyed flying his Cessna 172 airplane and was an active member of the Richland Pilot’s Association. Chuck was a gifted musician and enjoyed entertaining others playing his trumpet. Family was most important to Chuck and he truly enjoyed the times they shared together over the years including family picnics by the river and Christmas caroling on hayrides through the village. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and will be missed by all who met him. Surviving are two sons, Daniel (Sylvia) Krupke of Pulaski and William (Julie) Krupke of Green Cove Springs, FL, one daughter, Becky (David) Thomas of Belleville, daughter in-law, Patricia Krupke of Clay, two sisters, Diana (David) Trump and Louise “Toots” (George) Walts both of Zephyrhills, FL, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dan married Caprice Moot Hooge on March 3, 1973 and she passed away September 24, 2009. He was employed by the Fulton Companies in Pulaski for 37 years, retiring in 2009. Dan was a bowling enthusiast; he was a member of the elite Snowbelt 700 Club and bowled a 300 game eight times. He was also a longtime member of several area bowling leagues. Dan enjoyed sports and loved to golf, (even if he wasn’t very good). He always rooted for his favorite sports teams, including SU, the Yankees and the Steelers. He graduated in 1964 from Adams Center - Adams Central School. He married his high school sweetheart Bonnie Kenyon on October 24, 1964 at the parsonage in Belleville, NY by Rev. Miles Hutchinson. David was past president and treasurer for many years of the Adams Center Fire Dept. and a current member of the Adams Center Fireman’s Benevolent Association. He was employed as a meat cutter at Carl Fassett’s store in Adams Center and at Rod’s Big M in Adams and Sandy Creek, Ron’s Big M in Philadelphia and the Sackets Harbor Big M. He retired as a meat cutter at Sam’s Club, Watertown in 2006. David enjoyed working in his flower garden, woodworking and bird watching, but most of all his family was his greatest joy. He is survived buy Bonnie, his wife of 51 years; two sons and daughter’s in law, David and Sue Broadhurst, Belleville, Jeff and Debbie Broadhurst, Rodman; five grandchildren, Nik Broadhurst, Adams, Lane Broadhurst and his fiancee Melissa Thomas, Adams Center, Ryan Broadhurst, Alexa Broadhurst and Cadence Broadhurst, all of Rodman; one great grandson Chase Broadhurst, Adams Center. Don was born in Syracuse on May 15, 1955, to David and Lena Neill Weisenburger. He graduated from Rome Free Academy and received his Doctorates of Chiropractic from Northwestern Chiropractic College, and ran a successful practice in Rome for many years, known to many as a master at his craft, his patients referring to him as “Doc.” Don was an avid antique collector and loved going to garage sales and shows, especially in Bouckville. He had a collection of antique cars as well, all of which he cherished. Don took pride in his homes, and enjoyed keeping them in tip top condition, always with some project in progress. He was a hardworking, devoted, selfless man and always would lend a helping hand at a moment’s notice. Don also enjoyed traveling and enjoying the good food and wine each destination had to offer. His favorite trip was a cruise in the Mediterranean. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather, son, and brother.
