He secured his appointment through competition as a member of the New York National Guard. He graduated in 1932, 53 in a class of 262.

Second Lieutenant Ackerman's first assignment was to an anti-aircraft battery in the Coast Artillery at Port MacArthur, San Pedro, Calif. It is interesting to note that it was the only such battery in existence at that time.

Lieutenant Ackerman entered the class of October 1933, at Randolph Field, Texas, and after an absence of six months because of illness he graduated in June 1935. He has maintained his pilot's rating continuously ever since.

Lieutenant Ackerman's first assignment after Kelly was Maxwell Field, Ala., where he served as a squadron officer under various commanders - a notable one was Major Claire Chennault. In 1938 he attended California Institute of Technology's graduate school and after a year's study was awarded the degree of master of science and aeronautics in the field of aviation meteorology.

Following this training, Captain Ackerman was station weather officer and assistant operations officer at Chanute Field, Ill., until the beginning of 1940. At this time General Arnold, then Chief of the Air Corps, assigned Ackerman along with three other experienced Air Force meteorologists to the California Institute of Technology again in a research project designed to prove or disprove certain theories concerning long range weather forecasts. General Arnold thought this was an extremely important subject in its relationship to the efficient use of air power.

After this brief interlude at Cal Tech, Major Ackerman for the next three years participated in the organizing, training and manning of the Air Corps Weather Service which grew from a tiny nucleus to a worldwide service in that time.

In the summer 1943 Colonel Ackerman joined the 58th Bombardment Wing, which was the nucleus of the B-29 effort, and organized its weather service.

Colonel Ackerman was assigned to the China-Burma-India theater and for the next year was General Stratemeyer's war planner. He additionally served on the combined Air Command Staff comprising British and American officers.

On his return to the United States in December 1944, Colonel Ackerman for six months was assigned to the headquarters of the Air Corps and while there occupied the position of assistant for Air Forces and in his role developed proper means for the employment of air power. In the course of this assignment he was the Air Force observer in Operation Iceberg which was the Navy's occupation of the Ryukyu Islands.

Following this assignment, Colonel Ackerman was the assistant chief of staff, plans, for the Continental Air Forces from May 1945, until March 1946. This was the period during which Air Force units were deployed from the European to the Pacific theaters and Continental Air Forces planned and executed that task.

In August 1946, Colonel Ackerman was sent to London as assistant air attache and in 1949 was made air attache upon the relief of the then Brigadier General Thomas Power, who later became commander of Strategic Air Command.

In 1950 General Ackerman returned to Washington and was deputy director of intelligence until 1953 when he was assigned as vice director of the National Security Agency. While serving in this latter position he was promoted to major general.

In August 1956, General Ackerman became commander of the Thirteenth Air Force, with station in the Philippines. This command has units in Formosa, Guam and the Philippines, with general responsibility for Air Force interests throughout Southeast Asia.

In March 1958, General Ackerman returned to the United States and assumed the post of deputy commander, Air Force Security Service, San Antonio, Texas.

General Ackerman is the son of John Walter and Bertha Vedder Ackerman of Auburn, New York. His parents are Holland Dutch stock. Both sides of the family arrived in the United States prior to 1640. He is a member of the Holland Society of New York.

DANIEL REED

Daniel Reed was born on the homestead now occupied by his son, Phineas D. Reed, in the town of Chatham, Columbia Co., N. Y., March 9, 1801. His ancestors were of English descent. John reed, the first of the family in America, removed from England, and settled in Abington, Mass., whence the descendants scattered over different portions of the United States. Gershom Reed, the grandfather of Daniel Reed, was born in Dutchess county, March 10, 1749, and removed to Chatham in 1791, locating on the farm now owned by Tabor Parks. He here reared a family of seven sons and three daughters. He died July 27, 1829, aged eighty years, four months, and seventeen days. His wife, Jerusha, was born Jan. 3, 1751, and died Oct. 17, 1831, aged seventy-nine years, eleven months, and fourteen days.

Phineas Reed, the father of Daniel Reed, was the fourth son, and was born in Dutchess Co., N. Y., June 18, 1775. He was a farmer by occupation, and married Abigail Mills, daughter of John Mills, of Chatham, by whom he had five children,--two sons and three daughters. A year or two after his marriage he purchased the present homestead, on which he reared his family and resided till his death, which occurred Dec. 19, 1817, aged forty-two years and six months. His wife, Abigail Reed, died Sept. 25, 1824. Phineas Read was a captain of militia, and a man highly esteemed by his townsmen.

Daniel Reed was brought up as farmers' boys usually are in the country, receiving his education at the common schools. His father died when he was sixteen years of age, and he was placed in charge of the farm for his mother, under the direction of his grandfather till the other heirs became of age, when he bought their interest in the estate and became full possessor of the homestead. On the 8th of November, 1826, he was united in marriage to Katy M. Walker, daughter of James Walker, of Chatham. The marital relations were blessed with two children,--a daughter and a son,--viz.: Carrie, now Mrs. John H. Rowe, of North Chatham; and Phineas D. Reed, his father's successor on the old homestead.

Daniel Reed was an active and enterprising farmer, following that occupation through life. He was a Republican in politics, and held several town offices, being a member of the board of supervisors in 1851, 1852, and 1859. He departed this life on the 12th of June, 1877, in the seventy-seventh year of his age. Mrs. Reed, whose likeness appears above, was born Sept. 11, 1807, and lived with her husband in married life over fifty years. She still survives him, and is remarkably active for one of her age and feeble health.

Phineas D. Reed was born March 16, 1839, and was married, June 1, 1858, to Phebe A. Rowe, daughter of George L. Rowe, of Chatham, who was born Sept. 23, 1838. They have four children, born respectively as follows: Carrie D Reed, Jan. 26, 1862; George L. Reed, Sept. 11, 1863; Fannie S. Reed, Sept. 25, 1872; Mattie A. Reed, March 13, 1875.

Mr. Reed is one of the prominent farmers of the town of Chatham.

1832 Biography of IMMIGRANT WILLIAM PEACH, PULASKI, NY
RAGS TO RICHES

A most enduring American folktale involves the poor immigrant coming to America to make a fortune. Oswego County, NY had a number of such people. William Peach who migrated from England in 1856 created just one of these happy sagas.
By 1860 William had become a naturalized American citizen. He settled at Richland, NY for reasons probably having something to do with cows. The economy of Oswego County then and now to some extent depended on its diary farmers. Profitable herds made money which the owners used to buy industrial goods. With the cheap waterpower available in the area the factories grew needing more workers.
At first life for William went poorly. Before 1859 William married Mary Willett(?). She may not have been the best choice as she came with a mother, Ann Willett, born in Ireland, age 47. In the 1860 Richland census the household contained William, age 25, a day laborer, born in England; his wife Mary, age 20, born in New York; a son William, age 1 and Ann Willett. William estimated his net worth to be $50. Most of his day work occurred in a local tannery, an unpleasant job at best.
By the 1870 Richland census things were not much improved. William’s net worth had doubled to $100. He worked as a plasterer, hard work for low pay. His household had grown by four persons: William, age 34; Mary, age 29; William J., age 11; Frank W., age 9; Mary, age 7; Ann Willett, age 59 plus Henry Duel, age 55, a railroad worker, born in Vermont and his wife, Letitia, age 49, born in Ireland. Wife Mary declared that her mother was foreign born, building a stronger case that Ann Willett was indeed her mother. Ann herself stated that she was “retired,” not a reasonable remark for a servant. As for the Duel couple, it seemed highly probable they were Ann’s sister and brother in law. Letitia, like Ann, was born in Ireland. Two related couples often lived together to cut costs.
During the 1870’s several tragedies struck. Henry Duel died as in 1880 Letitia called herself a widow. She began keeping house for Michael Kelly, a sailor, age 23, who was called her son. Letitia apparently had an earlier marriage before Henry Duel.
Mary (Willett) Peach also died. At which point Ann Willett was asked or decided to leave the Peach household. Evidence suggested that she might be the Ann Willett, age 70, born in Ireland residing at the St. Joseph Orphan Asylum & House of Providence at Geddes, NY. This institution run by Sister Rose Garvey from Ireland housed many older widowed and single Irish women.
William Peach, alone with his two youngest children, began a new life by remarrying. His choice was Fanny J. ____ born in New York State but with an English mother. William in 1880 was plying the stonemason trade. His son Frank W., age 19, had employment as a blacksmith. Daughter Mary, then called Maggie, age 17, like so many of her neighbors worked in a nearby box factory.
Earlier in 1873 at age 14 son William J. Peach dropped out of school. The lad went to work in a Pulaski cheese factory managed by W. C. Holmen on lower Maple Ave. By age 18 William J. managed four cheese factories. Cheese was a perfect product to make each summer when there was always an overproduction of milk. There also was an abundance of icy spring water to cool the milk. Fifty cheese factories existed in Oswego County by 1871.
Before 1879 the young man married Jeannette Besanson of West Monroe, NY. They had a daughter Maggie, age 1, in the 1880 West Monroe census which listed Jeannette as Nellie. She had another child, Arthur F. Peach, born 8 October 1884. However, she died young before 1892. On 29 January 1892 William J. married again Ellen Blanche Richardson, daughter of Henry Dayton Richardson.
In 1900 William, married 21 years to Fanny J., was 66 years old, living in Pulaski. He still labored as a mason. Fanny J. had given birth to two sons: John C., born October 1882 and Harold L., born 22 February 1894. For William his American dream had come true. He owned his own home in town without a mortgage.
Blessed with longevity in 1920 the 85-year old William still resided with Fanny J. who was 65. He had changed his life as a poor immigrant to one of comfort beyond his modest dreams. He had watched his children prosper and one son had become a rich and powerful figure in Pulaski.
In 1920 William and Fanny’s son John C., age 37, worked as a watch- maker for a jewelry store. He had married Emily, age 37. Their son John H. was 7 years old. John’s younger brother Harold L. married Mildred Campbell. Harold died at Deland, FL in April 1970.
William J. became a cheese broker by age 25. William bought cheese from all the small local cheese makers in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties.
Then he sold it in Montreal, New York and Philadelphia.
In 1900 he had been married 8 years to Ellen. They lived next to Brayton Salisbury, a cheese manufacturer.
Salisbury and Peach formed a partnership in 1902. The team owned and operated five cheese factories. Beyond the partnership William J. ran plants at Fulton, Pulaski, Baldwinsville and other locations. The partners willingly taught cheese making to others. William J.’s knowledge of the industry and its craft became recognized throughout the state.
During this period cheese makers sold cheese at 6 to 8 cents per pound. By 1911 William J.’s business netted nearly $1 million.
In the 1910 Pulaski census William’s 18-year marriage to Ellen had produced two children, but only Mildred Richardson Peach, age 16, survived. William had moved his family into what is now called the Peach-Thomas House built in 1897 by Architect Gordon Wright of Syracuse, NY. The exterior was painted peach with a cream trim. Inside the salon parlor was frescoed in salmon pink. The library was covered in satin-finished paper of an old rose hue. The look of the house remains quite distinctive. When people go by on Lake St., the tower, bay window and veranda catch all eyes. Peach eventually sold the home to Robert Thomas.
In 1900 William J. was elected Mayor of Pulaski where he served in 1900-04; 1910-14 and 1917-21. He earned terms as a village trustee for 15 years. For over 10 years he was on the Board of Education.
Historian Hope Marston described William J. as “one of Pulaski’s most beloved, benevolent citizens.”
The local Pulaski Democrat newspaper once reported regarding William J. “no one ever went to him in distress and went away unaided.”
About 1915 son Arthur F. Peach joined his father in the cheese business. Later they became business partners as W. J. Peach & Son.
W. J.’s best remembered contributions to Pulaski are the Veteran’s memorial and public drinking fountain still in South Park. 163 men from Pulaski served in World War I. The memorial was dedicated with a formal ceremony on 30 May 1925. Sadly William J. had died 27 August 1923.
Son Arthur F. in 1928 merged all the cheese businesses with Kraft-Phoenix Cheese. Today this corporation is the well-known Kraft Foods.

Helen9 wed Robert M. Barnett on 18 January 1898. She died in 1951.

Alfred8 ran a hardware store in Richland as a partner with Henry Lyman his friend from the war. Both men did well financially. In the biography of Henry Lyman, Alfred’s partner, there is the story of George E. Washington, an ex-slave who worked in the hardware store. In the 1880 Pulaski census Geo B. Washington and his wife, Lucretia, were residing in the household of Alfred and Frances Beadle. He was 26 and employed as a clerk in the hardware store. Alfred had given shelter to this hardworking, but extremely poor couple.

Sometime after 1880 the hardware store was sold to Lewis J. Macy. In August 1879 under Alfred’s leadership the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic was formed in Pulaski. Alfred became its first commander. In 1885 Alfred8 N. Beadle was elected sheriff of Pulaski.

On 5 November 1877 his will was presented to the Oswego County Surrogate Court for probate. The will dated 16 September 1877 read as follows: “In the name of God Amen - I Amos Beadle of the town of Orwell in the County and State of New York being now of sound mind and memory and aware of the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make or draw, publish and declare this to ne my last will and testament. That is to say:
“First, I request and direct that all my debts now die or that may accrue during my last sickness together with the expenses of directing a suitable monument at my grave and of procuring a suitable coffin for my burial be defrayed from my personal estate.

“Second, (having already given to my two sons Nathaniel and Lucius each eight hundred dollars) I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Betsy all my estate both personal and real that may remain after defraying the expenses above referred to, to be distributed by her among our children at her death as she uses her best judgment may see fit.
“I recognize no favorites among my children, but love them all as dutiful, kind and affectionate children, and bestow on each a father’s dying blessing confident that their mother will deal justly by them all. Likewise I make, constitute, and appoint my wife, Betsy Beadle, as sole administrator of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

“In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 16th day of September A.D. 1877.
“Amos Beadle”

1834 BIOGRAPHY: Johan Andreas, the son of Johan Henrich and Anna Dorthea Widerwachs, was born about 1700 in Hoog-Duytsland, Germany. He travelled, with his parents, to the U.S. during the Palatine Emigration of 17-9/1710., and was on the list of First Communicants of the NY Lutheran Church at Easter, 1714. He went through the naturalization procedures, with his father, in 1715, was a farmer, and was married to Barbara Lesser on 09 November, 1724, according to Reformed Dutch Church, Kingston, NY Records.
Kingston Marriages 1724, 09 Nov. Anderies Wederwags, j.m. and Barbara Lesser,j.d., both born in Hoog-Dytsland, Germany, and both resid. now under the jurisdiction of the "Menner van de Heer, Lievenstond" (Livingston Manor). Married on presentation of a certificate that three Sabbath publications had been made, without objection, int he House of Worship of Koningsburg.
Following the marriage, Andreas continued to farm in the Rhinebeck area until Barbara died, abot 1739/1740. We do not know the date of her death but, can approxiamte it to be at this time because, their last child, Andreas Jr. was baptized 22 May, 1739, at the German Reformed Church of Lower Red Hook, NY and there is no mention of Barbara after this date.
Following the death of Barbara, Andreas was married to Johanna Edeli, probably early in 1740. Andries, the last child of Andreas and Barbara, was baptized 22 May 1739, and Johannes, the first child of Andreas and Johanna, was baptized 13 January 1741. These facts permit an assumption that the marriage occurred as stated above. Andreas and Johanna continued to live in Rhinebeck for about 25 years. Andreas was a free-holder in Rhinebeck Precinct in 1740, and he took the Oath of Allegieance there, 24 Oct , 1743. They were sponsors in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 12 Oct 1766 and , after this date, they no longer appeared as sponsors in the Dutchess County area. Their next appearance as sponsors occurred in October 1771, at the Schaghticoke Reformed Church in Albany County, thus, it is safe to assume that they moved to Albany County sometime between 1766 and 1771. They continued to farm there until Andreas died, 10 May 1784. His will was drawn 18 Jann, 1780, was confirmed on 16 September, 1784, and was record in Berthold Fernow's "Calendar of Wills", as follows:
Page 196 - In the name of God, Amen. I Andreas Widderwax, Farmer in Tamhanick, Albany County, NY., being weak in body. I leave to my first born, Bastian Widderwas, 8 shillings for his birthright. To my son Hannes, 23 1/2 acres of land, whereon he now lives in Tamhanick joining the farm on which I now live with this condition that he pays $80 for the remaing debt on the said land, he having a deed for the land from me already. To Martin Widderwax the farm whereon I now dwell in Tamhanick, at the extent of a farm surveyed for Alexander Widderwax, containing 235 1/2 acres, also our new waggon, a plow, harrow, our "pleasure slay", and an "iron shot wood slay", of which land and farm he the said Martin is to have sufficient deed, but he is to give me yearly as long as God shall spare my life for the maintenance of me and my beloved wife Anna twenty-four bushels of wheat, ten bushels of Indian corn, six bushels or rye, and to keep two cows for our use, and after my death he shall be obliged to give my wife half of the above mentioned maintenance as long as she lives. To my wife Anna a certain bond given me by Carl Traver of $95 10 shillings lest in case she should not be in need of the money it shall be used for the payment of the debt on the land. To my son Alexander 200 acres on the river joining Van Antwerp's line and the lot of my sone Martin. but that he is to move from the place he occupies now as it belongs to Martin whe he, Martin, wants the use thereof, and I order Alexander that he shall then quit said place without disturbance or any molestation, and he to pay $30 for the remaining debt yet onthe land. Next I give to my son David 280 acres of land whereon he now lives at present in Tanhanick joining Peter Dody's farm at Northeast, he to pay $120 for th edebt ont he land. To my son Peter 269 acres of land in Tamhenick joining the line of Mishel Coock at the east, he to pay $110 for the debt which is on the land as yet. To my son Jacob 220 acres of land whereon he now lives and whereof he has a deed but he must pay $20 yet to settle the debt on the land, which lies in Tamhanick joining hte farm of Carl Traver. To my two daughters, Barbara and Elisabet, 104 acres in Tamhenick, joining the land if my son Hannes. To my daugher Barbara Tincle, 20 acreas in Tamhanick between the farms of my sons, Hannes and Peter, to her and her heirs but after their death to my son Hannes. I leave 800 acres in Tamhanick joining Ranslearswyke on Hoosick Road where Nicholas Monray lives, which land shall be sold and the money be for the payment of the debt on the whole patent, and if it should not be enough then each of my sons herein mentioned shall pay an equal share till the whole is paid, but if there should be any over and above this it shall be equally divided between the children of my former wife Barbara, "namently" Bastian, Henry, Andeas, Anna, margreth, maria, Dorthea, Elisabet adn Catherine. I appoint my trusty friends, Henry Grauberger and George Wetsel, executors, date 18 January 1780. Witnesses: Wendel Overacker; Hannes Kebbler, farmer; John Clints, Schoolmaster.
You may have noticed that daughers Anna nd Rosina were not included in this will. The reason is that they had probably died prior to that time.
