18253 Online Obituary - Michael J. Corcoran, 71, went home to the Lord on Thursday evening, July 18, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. His beloved wife, Roberta and family were at his bedside. Born May 26, 1942, the son of the late Hugh and Marie Mattick Corcoran, Dad was a 1960 graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Plains Township. He was class president three of four years, an altar boy throughout his school years and, to hear him speak, was a better than average basketball player. Dad received the American Legion Award for the highest academic average over his eight years of grade school. Dad earned a bachelor's degree from King's College, where he served as secretary and president of the Student National Education Association and was a proud member of the King's College Glee Club. He also earned a masters degree from the University of Scranton and completed career enrichment courses at Temple University, Glassboro State University, Wilkes University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Graduate School. After three years of teaching, Dad served 31 years with the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour division. He often described his role enforcing laws protecting the American worker as a vocation - the best and most satisfying job in the world. Laws enforced included the Minimum Wage and Overtime Law, the Equal Pay Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act as well as statutes protecting children, the disabled, the rights of migrant workers and those performing on government contracts. Dad's positive attitude reflected itself in his many career accomplishments. At the local level he served as investigator, assistant district director and district director. Regionally, he served as equal pay and age discrimination specialist, government contracts specialist, sheltered workshop specialist and administrative assistant to the regional director. A frequent instructor at Wage and Hour national training classes, including five weeks in the U.S. Virgin Islands training their investigative staff, Dad was consistently asked to serve lengthy details at the national office level. These included branch chief of wage hour standards and branch chief of government contracts. For many years he served on regional and national quality control teams conducting accountably reviews to ensure consistent application of agency statues. He served as district director of Wage and Hour's Wilkes-Barre office for the last 17 years of his career. The office covered more than half of the Pennsylvania's 67 counties. Subsequent to the 1972 Agnes Flood, Dad was detailed to the Office of Emergency Preparedness. He was in charge of all disaster relief agencies stationed at the Forty Fort Borough Building, the area near the cemetery where the river first breached the dike. He would brag that he met President Richard Nixon and comedian Bob Hope, who were among many dignitaries who visited during this difficult time. Dad believed government existed to protect, allow realization of the American dream, and to provide for the needy and unfortunate among us. He lived his personal life in a similar caring, compassionate manner, especially so towards his children, grandchildren and close friends. An infectiously positive person, Dad believed life was best guided by simple sayings - Among his favorites, "Just do it, but think beyond yourself." A third degree Knight of Columbus, Council 302 and a past member of its advisory board, Dad also served on the Wilkes-Barre Area School District Advisory Committee and was a founding member of Deerhorn Sportsmen's Club. He was a member of the Polish American Veterans, the Great Bend Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Perugia Beneficial Society. In addition to Roberta, his beloved wife of 48 years, Dad is survived by his children, Michael and his fiancee, Nancy Angus, Cranberry Township; Denise Lewandowski and her husband, Bernie, Boiling Springs; Sandy Graham and her husband, Mark, Carlisle; six grandchildren, Matthew, Katherine, Alyson, Jake, Andrew and Mackenzie, each loved equally and without bounds. Also surviving are his brothers, Hugh and his wife, Dorothy, Pittston; sister, Marie Spagnuolo and her husband, John, Plains Township; brothers, Ray and his wife, Joyce, Linglestown; John and his wife, Marilyn, Plains Township. Dad's parents and his sister, Ellen, preceded him in death. Dad was especially comforted throughout his illness by family and friends who "just did it," including maintenance chores at our home, driving assistance on the many trips to Fox Chase Hospital in Philadelphia, routine visits to our home and get well cards. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Frances X. Cabrini Church, Carverton section of Kingston Township. Family and friends are invited to go directly to church Tuesday morning. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plains Township. Friends may call Monday evening, 5 to 8 p.m., at Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, PA 18705. Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at jdrf.org. Corcoran, Michael James (I9532)

18255 Online Obituary - Monday, June 4, 2012 - Jim Durkel, 56, died May 28, 2012 of complications from multiple myeloma. He is survived by his partner of 29 years, Stephen Finn; six brothers and sisters, Andrew, Jeff, Kathy, Ken, Pat Durkel and Molly Tanner; eight nieces; six nephew; and three dogs, three horses, four cats and one cockatiel. Jim was born May 13, 1956, in Gary, Indiana, the fourth of seven children of Carl and Theresa Durkel. He enrolled in Purdue University, majoring first in pre-veterinary science, then in agriculture, and finally obtaining Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in speech pathology and audiology. He was ABD in Communications Disorders from the University of Texas and a certified teacher for the visually impaired. This eclectic mix of studies reflected many of his lifelong interests. He was an animal lover who could charm any four-legged creature - only Jim could pet the feral cats who took up residence in Jim and Steve’s barn. He was an avid gardener and cook. While in college, he grew cucumbers and sold them to the local pickle factory. Jim found his vocation in serving children with sensory deficits, working for more than 20 years in the outreach program at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin. He felt a deep sense of responsibility about his work. In spite of significant health issues over the last year, he refused to retire. He told his loved ones he didn’t feel finished; he wanted to be sure to have everything in perfect order for whoever might take over his job. In 2001 Steve and Jim moved to Elgin because there was no room for horses in their Austin back yard. No matter where they lived, Jim turned every yard into a vibrant, welcoming garden. Above all else, Jim had a gift for making things grow, whether it was plants, pets, people or his own heart and intellect. He will be deeply and enduringly missed. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Jim’s family wishes to thank Dr. Jason Melear and the staff at Texas Oncology and the ICU staff at Seton Hospital for their wonderful care of Jim. Please send contributions to the Jim Durkel Memorial Fund at Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 1100 West 45th Street, Austin, 78756 or to the International Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Drive, Suite 206, North Hollywood, CA, 91607-3421. Durkel, James (I14167)

18265 Online Obituary - Prominent jazz, big-band drummer Campbell dies - Tuesday, March 31, 1998 | 10:21 a.m. - Jazz drummer Jimmy Campbell may best be remembered for his energetic and lengthy solo on the recording of "The Big Chase" which was featured on Stan Kenton's 1959 "Road Show " album. But Campbell, who idolized Woody Herman Orchestra drummer Davey Tough, shared his philosophy that "drums should be felt and not heard." In short, Campbell did not like to do drum solos. Despite not seeking that kind of limelight, the Las Vegas resident of 30 years became one of the most sought-after drummers in the business and appeared with numerous jazz groups and big bands in a career that spanned five decades. James Lawrence "Jimmy" Campbell, the original drummer for "Hello Dolly" on Broadway who later worked nearly every Las Vegas lounge and showroom from the late 1960s to the late '80s, died Friday at University Medical Center. He was 69. The cause was respiratory failure, his family said. Campbell was a three-pack-a-day cigarette smoker for nearly 40 years, but gave up the habit 15 years ago. Services were scheduled for today at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church. A private burial was to follow. Palm Mortuary handled the arrangements. "Jimmy was a fixture in this town," Dan Trinter, president of Musicians Local 369, said. "He was an extremely accomplished musician who was highly respected by his peers. He earned that respect from his many years of performing with road bands." Longtime SUN entertainment columnist Joe Delaney agreed: "Jimmy was not only a fine drummer, but he had a tremendous knowledge of the history of pop music and jazz. He was a walking reference library of jazz." In addition to stints with the Kenton and Herman orchestras, Campbell performed with the Page Cavanaugh band, which included jazz bassist and fellow Las Vegan Carson Smith, who died last November. It was while performing with that group in Arizona in 1966 that Campbell met a Phoenix teacher who would become his fourth wife. "He was a wonderful drummer and a very funny man," Carol Campbell, who married Jimmy in 1967, said. "I was a big jazz fan and was very impressed with him." They moved to Las Vegas in 1968, the year Jimmy joined the local musicians union. "Jimmy loved Las Vegas, especially years ago when work was plentiful for good musicians who were tired of traveling and were looking for a place to roost," Carol said. "Many of Stan Kenton's and Woody Herman's band members settled here." After 25 years of marriage, the couple divorced and he took a fifth wife. After that brief marriage ended, Jimmy reunited with Carol and they have lived as companions ever since. They would have celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary Monday. Born Christmas Eve 1928, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Campbell joined the Merchant Marines after graduating from high school in 1946. By year's end, he enlisted in the Army, where he took up the drums. "Jimmy put together a little group that played at officers clubs," Carol said. "When he got out of the service in 1948, he decided to make music his career." Campbell, a tall, slender man known for his prematurely gray hair and moustache, worked for such band leaders as Ralph Flanagan, Sal Salvador, Don Elliot and Johnny Richards. As a member of the Kenton orchestra, which for eight straight years was voted No. 1 jazz band by the readers of Playboy magazine, Campbell worked with Maynard Ferguson and later was a member of Ferguson's Birdland Dream Band. Campbell also was the drummer for the Johnny Smith Trio and played backup for Joe Williams, Julie London, Johnnie Ray and other performers. On Jan. 16, 1964, Campbell was in the orchestra pit at the St. James Theater in Manhattan to play drums for the opening of what would become one of Broadway's biggest hits "Hello Dolly." In 1988, Campbell, slowed by emphysema, retired from show business. In addition to Carol, Campbell is survived by three daughters, Susan McCarty of Ashley, Pa., Mara Pawlenok of Mountaintop, Pa., and Nancy Tully of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. DONATIONS: In Campbell's memory to the American Lung Association, 3375 Glen Ave., No. 7, Las Vegas, NV 89121. Campbell, James Lawrence (I75389)

18294 Oren or "Ike" Yerdon was a lifelong woodsman in Greenboro section of Redfield Township. The youngest of 4 children, Ike attended Yerdon District School down the road from the old homestead. Ike lived with his Mother until the house burned in March 1937, then in town until his marriage to Alice Adams of Osceola.
After their marriage Ike and Allice lived for a time with Sterling & Marjorie (Bennett) Yerdon before they set up housekeeping in a small house just North of the Randall farm, and across the road on County Rt. 17. There the children were all born. About 1955 they bought a farm on Jess Drive in Greenborough, which they lived in for about 3 years until it burned about September 1960. From there the family moved back on County Rt. 17 into a house owned by Vera Lodge Yerdon, the old McCollum place. They lived here until about 1969 when Ike bought a Trailor from son-in-law Bob Schmitt that they placed on the old land where the first house had set. Later additions were added to the place, and it is still retained by the family.
Ike was a well known hunter and trapper. He taught all of his sons to hunt, and the Autumn deer season still finds the Yerdon Men (and some women) gathered for the drives at the old homestead at 6195 County Rt. 17.
In his last year Ike lived in Oswego at the Harwood Nursing home. He is buried with his ancestors in the old Greenboro Cemetery.
