18301 Orin Joseph Bushnell - May 16, 1894 - February 24, 1917. Son of Alfred Carter and Rosa Belle Sprague Bushnell

Newspaper Obituary - Monday Afternoon, February 26, 1917 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Killed Beneath R.R. Snow Plow - Fatality In The Richland Yards - Orrin J. Bushnell, Aged 23 - Was Member of Crew and Missed Footing, Falling in Front of Plow - Pulaski, February 26 - A shocking fatality occurred in the yards of the New York Central, at Richland Station last Saturday afternoon, when Orrin J. Bushnell, 23 years old, fell beneath a moving snow plow and was almost instantly killed. The victim of the fatality was working with the crew on the snow plow which at the time of the accident was moving slowly at the north end of the Richland yards, and attempted to board it. He missed his footing and fell directly beneath the plow, which almost severed the body at the hips. The snow plow soon was at a standstill and the crew with difficulty, succeeded in removing the body of Bushnell, which seemed to be wedged in the wings. An engine was rushed to Pulaski for Dr. Fenton E. MacCallum, who soon reached the scene of the accident, but his services were not required, as Bushnell had died soon after being extracted from under the plow. Coroner Leroy F. Hollis of Lacona was notified by telephone and directed that the body be removed to the undertaking rooms of Enos and Morton in this village. It was placed in a caboose and brought to the Pulaski station, where it was received by Smiley J. Hewitt, formerly of Watertown, an undertaker employed by the firm. Bushnell was unmarried. An inquest will be held later. Some time ago Bushnell, whose home was at Richland Junction, was employed in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he enlisted in the National Guard of that state and accompanied the Connecticut company in the border. He returned to his home in Richland and for some time past had been employed by the New York Central. Bushnell was well known throughout this section, where he had a host of friends. Undertaker Hewitt yesterday took the body to the home of the dead man's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bushnell, Richland Junction, where funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. S. H. Stroker, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at that place. The body will be placed in the receiving vault at Willis cemetery, south of this village. Interment will be made in that cemetery later.

Newspaper Obituary - March 6, 1890 Daysville District - Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - It is with sadness that we record the death of Orla Hungerford, which occurred at his home here last Wednesday night. About four weeks ago he came home from Pulaski, where he was attending the academy, sick with what his parents supposed was la grippe, but which rapidly developed into typhoid fever. Dr. Low was the attending physician, and did the utmost in his power to save him. His death came like a shock upon the community here, so short a time before, he had been in his usual health, it seemed almost impossible to believe him dead. Orla was the only son of Newton and Olive Hungerford, and was in the 20th year of his age. Besides his parents, he leaves one sister, Miss Effie, to mourn his early death. His young friends in the place feel his death most keenly. The funeral was held from the house last Saturday, Rev. D. D. Owen, assisted by Rev. R. F. Whipple, officiating.
