The following notes from the late John D. Baldwin (50+ year Delong researcher). (note various spellings of surname in this text.../rd)

FRANS (1-2) bpt. Kingston, April 24, 1681, sponsors Pieter Pieterson and Gretjen Jans (might she have been sister of Frans' mother?) .... from records of Old Dutch Church, Kingston, New York.

1703 - The marriage intentions of Frans with Maritje Van Schaick were recorded Albany D.R. Church July 31, Frans recorded as born Esopus, Ulster Co., resident of NYC, Maritje born at and resident of Kinderhook (in today's northern Columbia County). At that time, Kinderhook included what is now Stuyvasent so perhaps the Van Schaicks lived near the Hudson.

The marriage took place Sept. 6 at Gerrit Van Esch's house. Elizabeth McDonald advised that Van Esch lived at Greenbush which was on the West side of the Hudson north of Kinderhook and just south of Albany in today's Albany County.

Maritje, born as late as 1788-9 (upwards of 70 in 1758) and of Kinderhook, was no doubt daughter or granddaughter of Claes Van Schaick of that place. Claes' widow was born ca 1635. Their age difference argues for granddaughter, not daughter, yet Maritje named her second son Niclaas which in patronymic style would be for her own father. (Frans and Maritje followed patronymic procedures in naming oldest son for the paternal grandfather, but seemingly did not do so with their daughters. The first daughter was named for the father's mother rather than mother's; it is unlikely an earlier daughter named for Jannetje could be fitted into the known chronology.)

Melwood Van Scoyac of Sarasota, Fla, Van Schaick genealogist, wrote in 1988 that little is known of Claes other than being father of Dominicus b. 1667 and Emanuel b. 1680. Other likely sons were Elias and Laurens of Kinderhook 1720, both of which names are found among Maritje's children. "Jannetje Claas Beevers, or Van Schayk's widow, about 94 years old" died Kinderhook and buried there Feb. 10, 1729 (NyG&B Vol. 105 Jan. 1974)

In discussing the marriage of Joseph Doty and Geesje [1-2-12] DeLong, the Doty Genealogy gives her parents as Frans and "Elsha", the latter an obvious error and presumably confusion with Maritje's youngest daughter Egge or Echa. The book then adds "Legend is that 'Elsha' was the daughter and sole heir of an Amsterdam banker and that she eloped with a French officer. The story makes it difficult to obtain full information on some branches". The story is also another of the 19th century attempts to assign a French heritage to a Dutch family. Frans was not a French officer, he was born to Dutch parents and in the new world. I doubt if Claas Van Schaick was an Amsterdam banker before emigration, and Maritje was not likely his sole heir.

An even more inane version appears in the History of Danby (Vermont) which says Lucretia Doty was daughter of "Hielcha DeLong, the wife of Francis DeLong, a French officer. They say she let herself down from a two story building in Amsterdam in 1780, came to America, and settled on Long Island." So this puts American-born Frans in Amsterdam and eloping at the age of 99! I hope he didn't hold her ladder.

In a dictionary, Daniel Burdick found "upwards of" mean "in excess of". Thus Maritje could have been born seven years prior to 1688, making her closer fo Frans and not a teenager at marriage. She could also have been a dau. of Nicholas' (Claus) wife born ca 1635.

1704-8 - the first three children were baptised in NY City; F. Doherty considers this to indicate they lived there during those years; note he had been recorded as NYC resident at time of marriage.

17__ - Without giving a date, Doherty says Frans settled in Arthursburgh in the present town of LaGrange, probably on the farm that later belonged to Samuel and Enoch Dorland. The farm probably contained land on both sides of present day route 82 and included much of Clapp Hill Road. (Dutchess Co., NY)

1711 - July, 'ffrans deLange' on list from Ulster County, under command of Captain Wessel ten Broeck to march upon "ye expedition to Canada". [1:442 -Annual Report New York State Historian, 1869]

1714 - Frans had crossed the Hudson River into Dutchess County, and is found in the 1714 census as 1/4/1. At this time he, to our knowledge, had only three sons but also one daughter, so perhaps 1/3/2 was intended.

1715 - A child was baptized back across the river in Kingston, the Dutchess County church not being established until 1716.

1715 - November 21, 'Frans deLangen' on list of military forces from Dutchess County under Captain Barend Z. Van Kleeck [1.553, Annual Report]

1716 - March 14 - Lott 8, Nine Partners, New York 1/2 of 1/2 Woolfert Weber of Bowery which Hendrick Van Schyk bought from Jacobus Dekey, merchant, and Sarah of New York City January 10, 1698/9 L 100.

1718 - Doherty points out the record is unclear. Maritje joined the Fishkill DR Church Jan. 21, 1718 while Frans joined either at that time or on Oct. 27, 1731 (another interpretation is that they were both members at the earlier date according to a membership list of the latter).

1717/8 - taxed south Ward through 1738-8, then Beekman until June 1756, and last the estate taxed Feb, 1756.

Coenradt has refused to pay both Fransa and the executors and his refusal is delaying execution of the will. F. Doherty has confirmed that Mary was deceased, earlier readings did not indicate so. Apparently, having been named an executor, she had to be accounted for in this suit by the surviving executors.

1764 - May, executors vs. Conrad DeLong - Court ordered judgment by default.

1764 - Oct, executors vs Conrad sheriff possessed defendant's goods and chattels.

Martha Elizabeth Davis Hubbard, 92, of Pulaski, died peacefully on April 28 at St. Luke's Health Services in Oswego, with family at her bedside. She was born September 7, 1922 in Bath, New York, the oldest child of Eleanor E. Fisher and David Henry Davis. She lived much of her first 10 years in rural Ohio, then moved with her parents and younger siblings back to the southern tier of New York State. Both her parents were Baptist ministers. Martha Betty's first piano teacher was her mother. Though a year apart in age, a childhood illness caused her to attend the same class as her sister, Ruth Esther. They were respectively valedictorian and salutatorian of the Woodhull High School class of 1941. Inspired by meeting a missionary visiting from Africa, she elected to enter The Baptist Missionary Training School in central Chicago, where she enjoyed her classes in English literature and the history of religion, attending concerts and meeting a diverse population. To her disappointment, lack of funds prevented her from completing college, and she moved with her parents and brother John Brewer Davis to the Baptist Parsonage in Fernwood, New York and got a job at General Electric in Syracuse. During World War II she was an airplane spotter. When her brother went to work on the Hubbard family farm in Fernwood, she met Howard. They were married by her parents in 1945. After living on a farm in Preble, New York for a year, Martha and Howard moved back to Fernwood, where she joined the Methodist Church with her husband, and gave birth to six children. Despite caring for a large family, various cats and dogs and, in the early years, farm animals, she continued to play the piano. All of her children sang and she led the family choir. She was active in church activities, particularly the Crusader Class and UMW Evening Circle. For a time she was substitute organist and choir director of the Fernwood Methodist Church, and she taught Sunday School. When her youngest children were in school, she started work at the Schoeller Paper Company in Pulaski, in quality control. In 1979, Martha and Howard sold their farm in Fernwood. From 1988 they divided their time between Pulaski, where they attended Park United Methodist Church, and Sebring, Florida, where she volunteered in the community and at the church, alongside her husband, sister and brother-in-law. They moved to Bishop's Commons Assisted Living Center in 2012, then St. Luke's nursing home in 2013. Her beloved "valentine" Howard died February 13, 2014. Legally blind, Martha loved hearing her children read to her. She continued to enjoy singing alto in the church services at Bishop's Commons and St. Luke's, as she knew all the hymns by heart. She is survived by her children, Joanne Hubbard Cossa and Kathy A. Hubbard of New York City, Barbara E. Hubbard and David W. Hubbard (Terry) of Pulaski, and Kenneth A. Hubbard, Sr. (Carol) of Fernwood; her grandchildren, Fletcher C. Cossa, Kenneth A. Hubbard, Jr. (Gretchen Miles), Caitlin E. Karver (Mark), Claude W. Hubbard (Lyndall Houppert), Ashley M. Hubbard (Adam Mance) and Colin A. Hubbard (Shawna Hatfield); her great-grandsons, Ethan Facey and Tyler Karver; brother-in-law Harold Hubbard of Pulaski, sister-in-law, Ruth Davis of Baldwinsville and a multitude of loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Martha was predeceased by her parents; her son, Robert E., and her sister and brother. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, May 30, at the Foster Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski. Her ashes will be interred in the South Richland Cemetery in Fernwood. The family will greet callers at 10 a.m. at Foster-Hax, prior to the memorial service. Donations in her name may be made to the Music Program, Park United Methodist Church, 2 Hubble Street, Pulaski, NY 13142.
