| 18654 | Posted: Sunday, July 29, 2012 12:00 am Marie Mae Bothum, 80, passed away March 20, 2012, in Burley, Idaho. She was born in east Kamiah May 6, 1931, to Clair (Jack) Silas Reichenberg and Laura Grace Belles Reichenberg. Marie attended school in Kooskia and Kamiah, graduating from Kamiah High School in 1949. When she was still in high school, Marie met Ronald W. Bothum. They were married in Kamiah on June 11, 1949, a love affair that lasted 62 years. In the early 1950s, Ron and Marie lived in a 25-foot trailer and moved multiple times following Ron's work as a surveyor. It was during those years that their four children were born and Marie learned how to be very efficient and live with only necessary items - a trait she continued all her life. In the late '50s, Ron and Marie bought their first house in Moscow. Marie was able to take sewing and tailoring classes and this was the beginning of her lifelong passion for sewing garments. For many years she sewed almost all of her daughters' clothes and made her own tailored items. She shared her knowledge and passion with many 4-H students over the years. Marie was also an avid reader from a very early age. As a teenager she could usually be found with a book in hand. She passed on this love of reading to her children, whose earliest memories are of their mother reading to them, or reading for her own enjoyment in the evenings. Ron and Marie bought an old homestead on Wells Bench outside Orofino in 1960 and spent many years remodeling the home and raising their children. Just a quarter of a mile down the road was the Wells Bench Sunday School. It was here that Marie and Ron became involved with the American Missionary Fellowship and Alacca Bible Camp in Harpster. Marie was a camp counselor for several years; Ron served on the board, and both of them spent time working on construction and maintenance projects at Alacca. In 1972, Ron and Marie built a house on the Dent Bridge Road above Orofino and lived there until moving to Kamiah in 1990. In 2000, they moved to Paul, Idaho, where Ron still resides. Ron and Marie spent 11 years as members of MMAP (Mobile Missionary Assistance Program). They traveled to many locations around the United States working on projects at churches and for nonprofit organizations. These were great years for them - living in their RV, seeing the country, doing meaningful work and making wonderful friends. Marie's battle with Parkinson's forced them to give up their travels in 2004. As Marie's health declined, Ron became "the chief cook and bottle washer." Marie had spent years cooking the most wonderful food and now it was her turn to be served. Marie always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. She was a loving and gentle woman of God with a gift of hospitality and she was an inspiration to all who knew her. Never complaining and a sunny disposition made her a good friend to many of the nursing staff and a favorite patient whenever she was hospitalized. Marie was preceded in death by her parents and brothers William and Silas Reichenberg. She is survived by her husband, Ron, and their four children, Mike and Melissa Bothum, Spokane, Colleen Suhr, Rupert, Idaho, Shawn and Jada Bothum, Hermiston, Ore., and Shannon and Jim Clapperton, Kamiah; her sister, Jackie Karr, Grangeville; and brother Allen Reichenberg of Pierce. By her grandchildren, Erin Sutton, Chelsea Bothum, Luke Suhr, Max Suhr, Dustin Suhr, Crystal Wilkie, Anne Rokyta, Rebecca Clapperton, Cristin Clapperton, and stepgrandchildren Kim Kern, Tammie Conant, and Nathan Moore; and 18 great-grandchildren. Marie's family will be holding a celebration of her life in the Blue Mountains of Oregon on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012. © 2015 The Lewiston Tribune. All rights reserved. | 18659 | President Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) is the son of John Scott Harrison (1804-1878) and Elizabeth Irwin Harrison (1810-1850). Click on the individuals to see a pedigree chart or family group sheet. You will need Adobe Reader to view the files. Benjamin Harrison's great-grandfather, Benjamin Harrison V, was born in Berkeley, Virginia, in 1726. He attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg. In 1764, when the House defied the Royal Governor and passed the Stamp Act Resolutions, the Governor tried to bribe Harrison with an appointment to the executive council. He refused the appointment and instead declared a devotion to republican principles. Elected to the Continental Congress in 1774, he was one of a party of representatives who, the following year, attended General Washington in Cambridge to plan the future of the American Army. He had reservations about the Constitution, a document which seemed to promote kingly power while increasing the mistrust between southern and northern countrymen. A slave owner himself, his great-grandson would be a Union soldier 80 years later. He was elected Governor of the State of Virginia in 1782. He retired from the Governor's office after five years service. He died in 1791 at the age of 65. William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison's grandfather, obtained a commission as ensign in the First Infantry of the Regular Army, and headed to the Northwest. In the campaign against the Indians, Harrison served as aide-de-camp to General "Mad Anthony" Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, which opened most of the Ohio area to settlement. In 1798, he became Secretary of the Northwest Territory. In 1801, he became Governor of the Indiana Territory, serving 12 years. The Battle of Tippecanoe, upon which Harrison's fame was to rest, disrupted Tecumseh's confederacy but failed to diminish Indian raids. In the War of 1812, Harrison won more military laurels when he was given the command of the Army in the Northwest with the rank of Major General. The Whigs nominated him for president in 1840. He won, but before he had been in office a month, he caught pneumonia and died. John Scott Harrison, Benjamin's father, was born in Vincennes, Indiana, October 4, 1804. He managed affairs at North Bend, Ohio, while his father was away. From 1853 to 1857, he served in the United States Congress in the House of Representatives as a Whig from Ohio. This was a tremulous time and John Scott stood firm on issues like the Kansas-Nebraska bill. He believed that it was necessary for mutual forbearance and compromise, in order that the Union might be saved. John Scott retired from politics and return to his estate at North Bend. He died on May 25, 1878. | Harrison, Benjamin (I54253)
