| 18783 | Pulaski Democrat January 3, 1940 The community was greatly shocked Friday morning upon hearing of the sudden death of Homer Scranton. Mr. Scranton was found dead by 12 year old Donald Murray, son of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Murray. Donald had eaten supper with Homer on Thursday evening, as was his custom quite often, also accompanying him often on his trips to the surrounding farms to shoe horses. Various neighbors noticed lights on in the house at different hours during the night but thought nothing more of it until Donald went to call on him Friday morning and found him dead at the foot of the cellar stairs. He had fixed his furnace fire and had started to return upstairs with an armful of wood and had fallen dead. He had been preparing to retire, as his bed was open and night clothes laid out. Mr. Scranton had lived in Fernwood for many years and conducted a blacksmith shop at the old Morris Dunbar place. He was an expert horse-shoer and always had plenty of work until failing health compelled him to relinquish many jobs. He was born in Parish March 3, 1874, son of Henry and Elizabeth Coffey Scranton. His wife for whom he never ceased to mourn, was Miss Cora Stewart. She passed away two years ago December 14th. The funeral was very largely attended at the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Rev. George Butler, pastor of the Methodist Church officiated, assisted by Rev. C. E. Jones, pastor of the Fernwood Baptist Church. The Masons of Mexico to which organization Mr. Scranton belonged, conducted their funeral service. Burial was in Dugway Cemetery. One brother, Frank Scranton, and nephew, Henry Scranton of Sandy Creek, a cousin, Mrs. Loyal Dimon and family of Maple View survive. | Scranton, Homer Aaron (I69185)

| 18792 | PULASKI GIRL FOUND DEAD OF HANGING POLICE CALL IT ACCIDENTShow Details Watertown Daily Times (NY) - October 11, 1999Browse Issues The tragedy of how a 7-year-old girl was hanged Saturday evening in the backyard of her Route 3 home will probably never be explained, a state police investigator said today. Emily Louise Rice was found dead by her father, hanging by a nylon clothesline rope from a low-level branch of a maple tree. Robert A. Rice frantically unfastened the rope from the limb, but was unable to save his daughter. Efforts of emergency responders to the 6:38 p.m. 911 call were also in vain, and the child was pronounced dead on arrival at Oswego City Hospital. An assistant Onondaga County medical examiner, Dr. Carol Dignon, found no evidence that the child was involved in a struggle before her death, Senior Investigator Wayne W. Corsa said. He anticipated a ruling that the death was accidental, from injuries "consistent with hanging." "It's hard," Mr. Corsa said. "The only one who could tell us what happened is the girl." He said it was likely a result of "kids' play," in which children "don't realize the consequences of their actions." Emily had been playing in her father's mobile home with her brother, Robert Jr., 10, and an 11- year-old cousin, Mr. Corsa said. Then she went outdoors alone. About 10 to 15 minutes later, the other two children went outdoors, discovered her hanging, and screamed for Mr. Rice. He lifted his daughter's limp body, unfastened the rope from the branch, then placed her on the ground and removed the section of rope that was tied around her neck, Mr. Corsa said. Since the rope had been removed in the urgency to try to save the child's life, police do not have a clear picture of how it became fastened to the limb and to her neck, he said. It is known that she climbed onto a picnic table, and was standing approximately "chest to eye level" next to the limb. "Does she tie the rope to the limb?" Mr. Corsa wondered. "Was she going to try swinging?" If there had been foul play involved, "this was not a limb that you would choose to hang someone," he said. There were no sightings of anyone having passed by the trailer at the time of the incident, Mr. Corsa said. The investigation is continuing, he said. Born Dec. 28, 1991, in Watertown, she was a daughter of Robert A. and Gail M. Bouchard Rice. She was a second-grader at Lura Sharp Elementary School and a member of Pulaski T-Ball Little League and Salmon River Figure Skating Club. Surviving besides her father, Pulaski, and her mother, Port St. Lucie, Fla., are a brother, Robert A. Jr., Pulaski; her paternal grandparents, Aldwin and Viva Rice, Boylston; her maternal stepgrandfather and grandmother, William and Patricia Shatney, Lacona; her maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Raymond and Nancy Bouchard, Sandy Creek; her maternal great-grandmother, Pauline Hill, Swanton, Vt., and her maternal great-grandfather, George Hill, Kansas City, Mo. | 18794 | PULASKI MOURNS THE LOSS OF ANOTHER ESTEEMED CITIZEN Henry L. Clark Passes Away After Brief Illness Our community was shocked and saddened, Monday morning when the news came that Mr. Henry L. Clark, of Lake St., had passed away between six and seven o'clock. Mr. Clark was taken ill and developed pneumonia, a week ago last Friday. He fought a good battle and had it not been for a weak heart he would have come off conqueror with pneumonia, but his heart could not stand the strain as it had been a source of trouble, by reason of weakness for some time. Henry L. Clark was born on the Clark farm, north-west of this village about two miles, December 8, 1854. He was ambitious for an education. He attended Pulaski Academy and fitted himself to teach district school which he did for a few terms, most successfully. He followed farming all of his life up to about three years ago when he bought the home where he died and came, to town taking up the sale of farm implements, a business he had been doing along with his farm work for some time. June 21, 1876, Mr. Clark took to be his life companion, Miss Florence Trumbull who, with four sons and one daughter survive him. They are Edwin E. Clark, Mrs. J.L. Mattison, and Norman L. who live in the neighborhood of their father's home; Norman is on the homestead; Herbert S., of Watertown and F. Clayton, of Madison, Wis. Mr. Clark was a member of Pulaski Methodist church; Pulaski Lodge F. & A.M. and Pulaski Grange. He has long taken deep interest in the grange, serving as master, trustee and in other important capacities. Mr. Clark stood at the head of the line in good citizenship and his sterling worth and wholesome influence will be keenly felt by many. He was not old enough to lay aside the implements of service and would have been of continued value to our community had his life been spared. Funeral services will be held at the home, tomorrow, at half-past two, Rev. Frederick Maunder, of Syracuse, a former pastor of Pulaski Methodist church, will officiate. The masonic rites will be celebrated. Burial will be made in Pulaski cemetery. Source: The Pulaski Democrat, June 6, 1923 ______________________________________ FUNERAL OF HENRY L. CLARK A large gathering of neighbors, and friends met at the home of the late Henry L. Clark, Lake St., on Thursday afternoon, to pay their last respects to the man whom we mourn and will miss. Mr. Clark's death, as announced, last week, occurred June 4th. The service was conducted by Rev. Frederick Maunder, of Syracuse, who was pastor of the Methodist church when Mr. Clark became a member. He was called for the service on account of the absence from town of Rev. Chas. T. Holcombe, pastor of Mr. Clark's church. Mr. Maunder talked on the bible verse, "And Enoch walked with God." He paid a high tribute to Mr. Clark and spoke fitting words in the discourse he delivered. The masonic rites were celebrated by Pulaski Lodge, F. & A.M. of which Mr. Clark was a member. Mr. S.R. Trumbull recited the ritualistic ceremonies in a most impressive manner. The floral tributes were profuse and embraced many collections in wreathes and other pieces also many loose flowers. The bearers were Dwight C. Dodge, David C. Mahaffy, William M. Woods, Dr. J.W. Mills, D. Ward Howard and Byron G. Seamans, members of Pulaski Lodge.
