Newspaper Obituary - Tuesday Evening, March 17, 1914 Oswego Daily Times - Oswego, New York - Civil War Veteran Dead - Pulaski, March 17 - Richard Youngs, a veteran of the Civil War and for several years a resident of Minetto, passed away last evening at the residence of his son, Frank I. Youngs, River street, following an illness of several months. Richard Youngs was born at Henderson Harbor, November 10, 1838. He served throughout the Civil War as a member of Company A, New York Volunteers, participating in many engagements. After the war he engaged in farming and about five years ago he came to Pulaski, where he had since made his home with his son, coming from Minetto. He was a member of J. B. Butler Post No. 111, G.A.R. Surviving are three sons and two daughters, William V. Youngs of Fernwood, Charles E. Youngs of Lafargeville and Frank I. Following his high school education, he served as an officer in the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Following his military service, he attended Onondaga Community College for undergraduate studies in Education. He went on to graduate from SUNY Oswego with a Master of Education. Mr. Guga was a dedicated history teacher at Indian River Central School District as well as Jefferson Community College. Teaching was his passion. While attending a teacher’s year-long exchange program in England, he had tea with Queen Elizabeth, a memory he recalled fondly. In 1964, he married Dorothy Stewart from Fabius, New York. Richard was a creative mind with many hobbies including cooking, music, traveling, entertaining, watercolor painting, working with his hands, building things, golfing, and crafting. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the US Navy Reserves, the Parkinson’s Group, and the Crescent Yacht Club. Leland was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Baldwinsville and enjoyed golfing in his retirement. He was an avid bowler and a member of several leagues at Strike 'N Spare Lanes in Mattydale. Leland was a member of St. Margaret's Church. Leland was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Doris (Quilty) in 2005. They were instrumental in founding the Catholic Church in Pulaski, then named St. John the Evangelist. Rita was pre-deceased by her parents, Lucille and Rexford P. Stewart, husband, John H. Carnes, son John S. Carnes, grandson Andrew P. Carnes, and son-in-law Charles S. Aldinger. Rita is survived by her children: Margaret Carnes of Washington, DC, James (Celeste) Carnes of Pulaski, daughter-in-law Debra Carnes of Lacona, and cousin Mary Jo Higler of Kokomo, Indiana. She is also survived by grandchildren John (Martha) Carnes, Thomas (Melissa) Carnes, Katherine (Karl) LaGray, Elizabeth (Ron) Bonaccorso, and James A. Carnes, as well as great-grandchildren Cassidy, Kayla, Mary, Jack, Eileen, Shannon, Peter, Andrew, Parker, Charlie, Colin and Simon. Little, 80, of Altmar, widow of William Little, died at the Wilson nursing home in Chaumont Tuesday evening where she had been a patient the past five years, Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harold W. Greene of Watertown and Miss Viola Little, of Altmar; two sons, Clayton M. Little of Watertown and Russell Little of Altmar: three grandchildren and four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two children died in infancy and a daughter; Mrs. Mabel Montondo of Sodus, died last February. Services will be held Friday with a prayer at the home at 1:30 and services at the church at 2 p. m. by the Rev. M. Howard St, Gyr, pastor of St. John's Episcopal church. | 19144 | Rites Held For Carrie A. Lane Last rites for Miss Carrie A. Lane, 91, one of Pulaski's oldest residents, were held Sunday at 2 p. m. from the Taylor Funeral Home. The Rev. James N. Pauley officiated with interment in Pulaski Cemetery. Death occurred Thursday evening at the Williams Nursing Home in Maple Ave., where she had made her home the past five years. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Lilley of Pulaski and two nephews, Gilbert Lane of Syracuse and Harold Lane of Watertown. Miss Lane was born at Talan, Conn., May 9, 1863 the daughter of Gilbert and Adeline Ladd Lane. She moved with her parents to Pulaski when a young; girl and attended Pulaski Academy from which she was graduated with the class of 1882. Later she attended Chaffee's Business school in Oswego and for several years was employed at Proctor, Vt., for a Marble Co. After a few years she gave up her position and returned to Pulaski to care for her mother who was ill many years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and of the D.A.R. in Pulaski. | 19145 | Rites Held for H.E. Finster, 62 Services for Harold Edward Finster, 62, who died suddenly late Saturday night in Ogdensburg, were held Tuesday from the Foster Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Russell Clark, pastor of the Park Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in Pulaski Cemetery. His only survivors are two cousins, Louis Nichols of R.D. Pulaski and Delos Nichols of Mexico. Mr. Finster was born in Pulaski Feb. 21, 1894, the son of Edward and Fannie Finster. He attended the local school and when a young man went into the local milk station to work, for the Dairymen's Protective Association and later for Haiik & Schmidt, Inc., and also worked at the Dairymen's League plant. More recently he had been employed at the Pierrepont Manor milk plant. He had been a separator operator at the Ogdensburg creamery for the past two months. | 19146 | Rites Held For Mrs. Mary Rickard Mrs. Mary Maltby Rickard, 86, widow of Frank B. Rickard, died Thursday morning in a Utica hospital where she had been a patient only a week. She had been in failing health for some time but had been confined to her bed only a few weeks before her death. Surviving are two sons, Edwin Rickard of Whitestone, L.I., and Roy Rickard of Watertown; three daughters, Mrs. Dugal (Sarah) Campbell of Great Neck, L.I., Mrs. Edward (Isabelle) Parker, Pulaski and Mrs. Leonard (Edna) Wheeler of Ithaca; and 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Rickard was born at Maltby Corners, two miles north of Pulaski, Nov. 4, 1864, a daughter of Rollin and Isabelle Campbell Maltby. Most of her life had been spent in Pulaski. She was an active member of the Baptist churches and its societies as long as her health permitted, and was at one time a member of the Civic club. Mr. Rickard died in May 1943. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. He was born July 11, 1893, in Patterson, N.J., the son of Maurice and Anna Week Burcklee. In 1932 he married Lessie Peacor in Suffern, N.Y., and in 1933 they came to Pulaski where he established the Pulaski Diner on S. Salina St. which he operated until just a few years ago. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of Pulaski Lodge, 415 F. & A.M., a member of Robert Edwards Post, and also Salmon River Barracks, Veterans of World War I. Dennis Knight, pastor of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Adams, officiating. The body will be cremated. Mr. Pacific died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie; two sons, James J., McConnellsville, and Randall R., Pulaski; a daughter, Kathryn J., Grapevine, Texas; his father, Peter Pacific, Pulaski; two grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Pacific, Pulaski, and Richard Pacific, Brewerton; two sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Joanne) Recor, North Syracuse, and Mrs. Edward (Patricia) Peterson, Pulaski, nieces and a nephew. Born in Oswego on June 15, 1926, a son of Peter and Mary Salesi Pacific, he was a graduate of Pulaski Academy & Central School. Mr. Pacific served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He then returned to Pulaski, where he was associated with his father in the operation of the Pulaski Shoe Repair Shop. He married Marjorie D. Fravor Oct. 4, 1948, at the Baptist parsonage, Lacona, with the Rev. Selden Ward, then pastor, officiating. Mr. Pacific owned and operated the Pacific Shoe Store on Main Street in Adams from 1957 until 1971. In 1972, he went to work at the Pulaski Agway Store, where he remained for 10 years. Mr. Pacific was employed as a car salesman at K-B Motor Co., Adams, a Ford dealership, from 1982 until his retirement in 1987.
