| 19424 | Ruth E. Carpenter - August 27, 1887 - June 7, 1953. Daughter of Emory and Josheba “Josie” Fisher Carpenter. Newspaper Obituary - Monday, June 8, 1953 Post-Standard - Syracuse, New York - Oswego Woman Dies As Cars, Truck Collide - Ruth Carpenter, Retired Nurse, Killed in County - 2 Autos Crushed In Spectacular Route 370 Accident - An Oswego woman was killed about 2 p.m. yesterday when hurled from the car she was driving after it collided with a freight-laden tractor-trailer at Plainville, eight miles west of Baldwinsville in Onondaga County. - Truck Damaged - The truck was damaged badly, it's mixed cargo scattered over a wide area, and the dead woman's car and a third vehicle were demolished in the spectacular crash which blockaded heavily traveled Route 370 for several hours. Both were late model cars. Deputy Sheriff William R. Hayford identified the victim as Miss Ruth Carpenter, 64, of 140 West Mohawk street, Oswego. Her identity was not definitely established until several hours after the crash, when her purse, containing licenses and personal papers, was found lodged behind the wheel on the overturned tractor-trailer. The woman was apparently hurled from the car by the impact of the crash, for her crushed and mangled body was found on the highway near the point of impact than where her car, apparently dragged along by the truck, came to a stop. The coroner's office said death was due to a crushed skull. - Headed for Chicago - Driver of the truck was identified by deputy sheriffs as Harold Daniel Betts, 33, of 66 Grandville street, Northeast, Pennsylvania. He was driving a Ramus Trucking Lines Inc., truck, of Cleveland, Ohio. The truck, heavily loaded with varied types of freight, was en-route from Chicago, Illinois, to Boston, Massachusetts. Betts told Hayford he was driving east in Route 370, approaching the intersection of 370 with the Plainville road, from Lysander to Jack’s Reef road. The Carpenter car, he said was approaching the intersection from the north, driving south. He was about two car lengths away when she entered the intersection in front of him, he told deputy sheriff's. Hayford said there is a signal at the intersection which required the Carpenter car to stop but witnesses claimed, he said, that she didn't come to a complete stop. - Severed Truck - Betts said he sought to avoid a crash by swerving, but the car and truck collided. The investigators said the tractor-trailer tipped over on its right side and the Carpenter car on its left side and the truck skidded down the road dragging the car along. Immediately after the first crash the truck apparently whipped then struck and demolished a parked car owned by Robert Edgar Trexler, 36, Plainville. Mr. Trexler told the deputy sheriff's he had just alighted from the car and was only a short distance away when the accident occurred. The wreckage came to a stop a short distance from a house. The highway and adjacent area was strewn with freight from the overturned trailer. Shaving lotion, shaving cream, tires, automobile parts and other items were scattered all over the highway. A special wrecking rig was summoned to right the tractor-trailer and the merchandise was reloaded. - Remain at Scene - Deputy Sheriff's Hayford, Charles W. Post, Raymond Saaler and David M. Lacey remained at the scene more than four hours to clear up the wreckage and handle traffic. Statements were taken from Betts and other witnesses by First Deputy Sheriff Justin B.
