Wright (born in Ireland) and Ella King, died in Pulaski of diphtheria. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 29, 1892 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In Pulaski, New York, September 25, 1892, of diphtheria, Don G. Wright, son of Mrs. J. H. Wright, and grandson of Don A. King, Esq., aged 11 years. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 29, 1892 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - On Sunday, September 18th, it was ascertained that four of the children of Mrs. Ella Wright, whose husband, was the Rev. Joseph H. Wright, deceased, Xenia, Ohio, were suffering from diphtheria. Mrs. Wright lives on Bridge Street. Great care was at once taken to prevent the spread of the disease and this far these precautions seem to have proven ample. The dread disease has been confined to the family where it first appeared. The youngest of the children thus afflicted was six years of age. Three physicians have, the greater portion of the time, been in attendance upon the family and all that could have been done was done for the recovery of those who were victims in the dread disease. A sudden turn for the worse was apparent on Thursday in the case of the youngest child and on Friday, Charles B. Wright died. On Saturday a brother of the deceased, Don G. Wright, was noticed to be in danger and on Sunday about half past five o'clock he, too, passed over the dark river. Interment of the first named was buried on Sunday night amid the intense darkness and the storm that was raging. It seemed too sad for expression that these two bright lads should thus be taken from this world that seemed so full of bright promise for their future. Mrs. Wright, the fond and sad self-sacrificing mother, has also been afflicted with a light form of the disease, but at present writing she is slowly recovering. The two surviving children are also believed to be convalescent. At once after the discovery that diphtheria had made its appearance, the house and grounds of Mrs. Wright were carefully inspected. They were found to be in perfect sanitary condition, so far as could be seen. The house was thoroughly cleanly, the cellar has a cement bottom and excellent drainage and there is no apparent cause for the appearance of this disease, so justly regarded as extremely dangerous. Dr. More, of South Richland, the health officer of the town, has placed the house in quarantine and a sign of "diphtheria" has been nailed up in accordance with the State law pertaining to such cases. The sympathy of every person in the village is warmly aroused on behalf of Mrs. Wright and her surviving children. The past ten days have been to them dark ones and filled to overflowing with terrible forebodings and a crushing sorrow, never to be forgotten. | Wright, Donald George (I58358)

DIXON Of Pulaski Among those prominently identified with the history of Pulaski and vicinity, none are more deserving of mention in the pages of history than that of the gentleman whole name heads this biography. Thomas W. Dixon was born in Paris, Oneida county, New York, May 21, 1798. He is the son of Robert and Sarah (Wiley) Dixon, the former of whom was born in Stonington, Connecticut, December 3, 1753; the latter in the same State, July 22, 1756. His father was a farmer, and a man of unbounded energy, and an extensive agriculturist for those days. There were nine children in the family, of whom the subject of this sketch was the eighth. About 1780 he (Robert) removed to Oneida county, and was one of the pioneers of that county, there being then biy a few log houses in the now flourishing city of Utica. He died at the advanced age of eighty-seven, and was followed to the grave by his wife two years later. Thomas W.’s advantaged for educational acquirements were limited, he having to work on his father’s farm during the summer months, and attended the district school winters. In 1818 he married Pamelia Priest, of Litchfield, Herkimer county, and shortly afterwards he purchased fifty acres of land and commenced life for himself. By industry and economy he added to his first purchase, until he became the owner of a fine farm of two hundred acres. This union was blessed with two children, - daughters, Mary Fidelia and Pamelia Elizabeth, - both deceased. On the 17th of December, 1823, his wife died, and on the 4th of August, 1824, he married Miss Nancy Pratt, of Lyme, Connecticut, by whom he had two children, - Charlotte A. and W. Dixon, - the latter at present occupying the position of cashier of Dixon & Ingersoll’s Bank of Pulaski. In 1847, Mr. Dixon removed to Pulaski, where he was interested with his brother-in-law, Colonel Meachem, the pioneer in the dairy business, and, after the death of the latter, purchased the Colonel Meachem farm, which consisted of 500 acres of land, and also 112 cows. This property he retained about eight years, and the noted Agricultural Hall, built by Colonel Meachem, was rented by Mr. Dixon as a water-cure. He then sold out, and purchased where he now resides, one mile north of the village. In 1857, he was chosen vice-president of the Pulaski bank, which position he occupied until the institution was merged into the present bank of Dixon & Ingersoll. Mr. Dixon has been quite largely engaged in manufacturing interests. He was associated with Ingersoll & Wood in the manufacture of linseed oil and flax. This firm (Dixon & Company) did business from about 1862 to 1865. He also purchased the stone flouring-mill on Salina street, which he now owns, in company with Mr. Allen. He now owns about 600 acres of land, nearly all in the town of Pulaski, of which he conducts the business exclusively - that of dairyman - at his advanced age. He has taken a prominent part in educational matters, and has liberally supported all enterprises touching the advancement of knowledge. Mr. Dixon has never had any political aspirations, his extensive business taking his entire time. He is, however, a stanch Republican, and was firmly in favor of the prosecution of the War of the Rebellion. In religion he is liberal, never having affiliated with any church, though being a regular attendant of the Congregational church, and is a generous contributor to all religious enterprises. | Dixon, Thomas Wylie (I36920)

Mrs. Rockfellow was 73 years old. Few live to see so many years. Three months ago Mr. William Rockfellow, her husband, died. Together they had lived for many years, sharing each other’s joys and sorrows, trials and disappointments. A son and daughter were first called, now the father and mother. There remain of the family two daughters and one son. In the month of May this aged couple desired to be moved from their home in Holmesville to the home of this son, to where they need not have any cares. The father lived but four weeks, but they were full of pain and suffering, yet ease from care. Three months elapse and the mother sleeps the sleep that knows no awakening. Kind hands and loving hearts anticipated her every wish, but they could not hold her back from the death angel when he called for her. Long, watchful nights and days were they, and full of care for her by Mr. and Mrs. Rockfellow. Such deeds of kindness and mercy will not go unrewarded by him who notices the fall of the sparrow. | Tickner, Sarah Ann (I54586)

Wallace born in New York, and Elizabeth Harmon born in New York, Died in Pulaski of cholera infantism. Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, October 7, 1908 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - On Wednesday, September 30, 1908, Anna Margaret, dearly beloved child of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert E. Wallace, passed peacefully away after a short illness, of cholera infantum, aged one year and nearly eight months. With the closing of her eyes in death many a fond hope was _, for little Margaret was the pride and pet of the household, the idol at her stricken parents. But God knows best. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved family and to other relatives who held her near and dear. The funeral was held from the family home on Lake avenue, Friday, October 2, Rev. Archibald Ehle officiating, who made very fitting and consoling remarks from the text, "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven." The floral tributes were many and beautiful, especially so one piece given by Ontario Iron Works, of which Mr. Wallace is an employee. Burial was made in the family plot in Pulaski cemetery and many tears were shed as the small, white casket containing the little white robed form was lowered to its lowly bed. | Wallace, Anna Margaret (I50670)

| 19826 | September 4, 1887 ~ Dora Ella King, age 13 years, 4 months, 22 days, born in Richland Township, Daughter of George and Doris Louisa King, died at Holmesville, New York of asphyxia and diphtheria lasting 4 days. Newspaper Article - Thursday, September 22, 1887 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Malignant Diphtheria - Mention has already been made of the presence of diphtheria of a fatal character in the south part of this town. The first case was that of a daughter of George King. It resulted fatally. The girl was stopping at the time at the house of her uncle, Leonard King. George lives near Daysville, while Leonard resides south of Holmesville. Every precaution has been taken to prevent its spread into other families and so far the efforts have proved successful. Since the death above reported, Mrs. George King has been taken sick. The disease also attacked a young child, sister of the deceased. On Sunday night this one died and every member of the family are said to be sick with the same scourge. Signs have been put up at both houses warning passersby, and the inmates ordered to remain at home. They are people in moderate circumstances, and Mr. Gray, overseer of the poor, has issued orders that all families be supplied with all things needful. Dr. Moore, one of the town medical board is the attending physician. Dr. Betts, health officer of the town has had the premises fumigated and done all in his power to prevent the spread of the disease. The children of George King have not kept in as closely as they should have done and bad results may come from it. The two burials were made strictly private. Dr. G. W. Betts, health officer, was unable on Monday to get anyone to lay out the remains of the child and so he went in to the house of death, carrying the coffin with him and I. J. Rich, Esq., conveyed the body to Daysville cemetery, where together these gentlemen, with the assistance of John Calkins, performed the sexton’s services. Too much cannot be said in praise of Dr. Moore, the attending physician, who has given up nearly all of his outside practice, to do his duty by this afflicted family, of Dr. G. W. Betts, our worthy health officer, who did for the family what no other person in that neighborhood could be found to do, and of I. J. Rich, a member of the town Board of Health, who conveyed the remains from the house to the cemetery. It is fortunate that there were such self-forgetful gentlemen at hand otherwise the dead might even yet lay unburied and uncared for. In this connection we would also mention Miss Mary Douglas, a professional nurse with a Bellevue hospital experience, who happening in the vicinity, volunteered to go in and care for the sick and dying family. Words are too feeble to express the nobility of character represented by such deeds of philanthropic daring. The district schools have been closed and the entire neighborhood is in a state of excitement. It is believed, however, that the cases will be confined to the two houses mentioned. Newspaper Article - Thursday, September 29, 1887 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Diphtheria Abating - It appears that the worst has passed in the diphtheria cases in George King’s family at Daysville. Mr. King is quite well and Mrs. King, who was seriously ill, is now recovered, although worn out with watching. The children are also better. Competent nurses have been procured only after the greatest of difficulty, no one caring to place themselves within the influence of the dreaded disease. This was especially true of those living in the vicinity and knowing most of the particularly malignant character of the scourge. It is quite natural that households should feel thus, but in other ways the entire neighborhood is very thoughtful and considerate. Milk is furnished and every variety of food and other delicacies supplied in abundance. Whatever is intended for the sick is taken to a point in view of the King house and left there. From this place it is taken by the nurse or by Mr. King to the house. Among those who have thus been leaving supplies near the King residence are Mrs. Kate Matthewson, Mrs. F. L. Brown, Mrs. Springer, J. H. Woodruff, and J. Robbins. All have been free to offer to do so or to furnish anything in their power. The professional nurse having been quite worn out with watching, Mr. Hubbard, of this village, has been engaged by the Board of Health to assist in the care of the sick. The schools, which have not been in session, are now opening, and what promised at first to be a wide spread epidemic, is now thought to be surely abated. | King, Dora Ella (I69145)
