| 19943 | Silas was one of 8 children born to Josiah (son of Ishmael and Abigail Beers) and Sarah Taylor. Silas' siblings are: 1. Angelina or Angela Bennett - she married Ashbel Ruggles and as of 1903 had been living in Kansas. 2. John Taylor Bennett - who, like Silas, was a well-known carpenter and builder and was involved in the construction of several Wilkes Barre buildings before moving to South Dakota, which is where he died May 29, 1904. He is buried in South Dakota. 3. Lydia Bennett - she marred Robert N. Smith 4. Eliza Bennett - she married Solomon Newton 5. Polly Bennett - she marred Abram Smith 6. Josiah Bennett - he married Charlotte Smith 7. Samuel Bennett (sources include History of Hanover Township by Henry Blackman Plumb, obituaries and The Michael Shoemaker book (Schumacher) , Williams T. Blair) From his obituary published 18 Jun 1903 in The Wilkes Barre Record CAME OF OLD FAMILY DEATH OF SILAS W. BENNETT, AN OLD RESIDENT OF WILKES BARRE Silas W. Bennett, an old and esteemed resident of this city, and a member of one of the pioneer families of the valley, died at his residence, 140 South Washington Street, at 7:30 yesterday morning of general debility, aged 76 years. Deceased was a former well known carpenter and builder and was engaged in the erection of many of this city’s prominent buildings during the past fifty years. About ten years ago he was compelled by reason of ill health to retire from active life and had since been an invalid. He is survived by a son and daughter: M.A. Bennett and Mrs. J. Bennett Smith, both of this city; also a brother, John Taylor Bennett of South Dakota, and a sister, Mrs. Angela Ruggles of Kansas. The sister is now 95 years old and the brother is 93. Silas W. Bennett was of Revolutionary stock and was a descendant of the early pioneer families in the Wyoming Valley. He was born in Hanover township on August 28, 1827. His father was Josiah Bennett and his grandfather Ishmael Bennett, who came to this valley with the Connecticut settlers before the Revolutionary War. His grandmother was Sarah Taylor, who was in the fort during the Wyoming Massacre. Deceased was a member of the Methodist Church and was prominent in Odd Fellow circles, being a member of Wyoming Lodge, I.O.O.F. He was an exemplary citizen and active in affairs for the progress of the city. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with services at the house and interment in the family plot in Hanover Green Cemetery. NOTE: The obituary says “His father was Josiah Bennett and his grandfather Ishmael Bennett, who came to this valley with the Connecticut settlers before the Revolutionary War. His grandmother was Sarah Taylor, who was in the fort during the Wyoming Massacre.” The Wyoming Massacre took place in July 1778. Ishmael’s first wife would have been the one married to Ishmael at the time; however, Abigail Beers (Ishmael’s second wife, who he is supposed to have married in 1780) is Silas’ grandmother, NOT Ishmael’s first wife - identified as Sarah Taylor. So did the obituary mis-identify Abigail as Sarah? If so, this contradicts the Shoemaker book which says his first wife was dead in 1773. | Bennett, Silas W. (I55289)

| 19944 | Silas5 Spicer, (Edward4, John3, Edward2, Peter1), was born Jan 22, 1744-5 in North Groton, Ct. The date of his death has not been ascertained. He married Hannah, a daughter of Thomas and Huldah (Burch) Draper. The correspondent who sent the maiden name of Huldah Draper was not certain if it was Burch or Borck. Preference has been given Burch, as it was a local name in the locality where they lived. A little book, once the propery of Mrs Hannah (Spicer) Vaughan, with a cover of worsted embroidery, bears the following memorandum: "This embroidery was done in 1742 by Huldah Borck or Burch wife of Thomas Draper the mother of Hannah Draper the wife of Silas Spicer, grandmother of Wm. Spicer, great grandmother of Hannah Spicer the wife of Ansel Vaughan." From the "Vital Statistics" of Groton, Ct, it is learned that Thomas and Jane Draper had son William, born July 23, 1719; Thomas, born Dec 22, 1722. William Draper married Mary ___ and had Thomas, born ___; Hannah, born Jan 2, 1745-6. No record of Thomas Draper found in Groton, but he was undoubtedly the father of Hannah (Draper) Spicer. The Groton "Land Records" furnish the following information of Silas Spicer. March 18, 1780, he bought of Increase Billings and Phebe his wife of Westmoreland, Westmoreland County, Ct (now Pa,) for five pounds, eight acres, laid out originally to Christopher Stark, "late of Groton, deceased, beginning at a heap of stones in the west line of the Masantuxet Land 12 and 1/2 Rods South of land laid out to Ebenezer Avery Dec'd at the Southwest corner of said land; thence East 110 Rods; thence South 12 and 1/2 Rods; thence West 110 Rods in said West line thence North 12 & 1/2 Rods to first bound"; witnesses, Wright Penyard and Phebe Sabin. May 8, 1780, he sold the same to Benjamin Gray, for twelve pounds and ten shillings; witnesses, Benjamin and Amos Geer. Feb 8, 1783, he made several land deals; he sold to Jonathan Hilyard of Stonington, the lot where his dwelling house stood, "beginning the Northerly side the North Stonington road which leads Westerly to the Norwich road and being on the Easterly side of a brook and two rods South of said dwelling house;" deed mentions lands of Joseph Lee and Thomas Morgan; sold with the lot "Dwelling house and Hovel thereon," also a small lot lying south of said road "beginning at an apple tree the south side said road, 'the Northwest corner of Capt. Morgans old Orchard' with the blacksmith shop thereon"; witnesses, William Spicer and Amos Geer. Some of the above said land he had purchased the same day of Capt. John Morgan and Joseph Lee. Feb 11, 1783, he bought from Timothy Parke six and one quarter acres for twelve pounds, "beginning the north side of the road leading from the Norwich road Easterly to Stonington in the line between the land of Joseph Lee and said Timothy Parke, running West with said Lee's land and land of Capt. Abel Spicer to the Northeast corner of Capt. Spicers land, thence Easterly with Silas Spicers land to the Northwest corner of Shapely Morgans, Westerly with Timothy Parke's own land and the road to first bound." March 3, 1794, he sold to Benjamin Gray his "proprietary Right in the Common undivided Mashantuxet Land so called, it being South of land of Asa Gray, North of the Starke Right and South by land formerly owned by Capt. Abel Spicer deceased"; witnesses, Stephen Billings and Thomas B Gray [The Mashantuxet lands, reserved for the remnant of the Pequod. Indians, after a time seemed to be thought to be too extensive for their needs, their number gradually diminishing, so the town appropriated and divided some of the reservation among the landholders of the town]. Feb 18, 1796, he sold to John Enos for one hundred and eighty pounds a tract of land in the Second Society of Groton; boundaries mentioned, lands of Joseph Lee, the widow Thankful Stanton, Benjamin Grey, Shapely Morgan, and the widow Elizabeth Parke, being the whole contents of three separate puchases, one from Timothy Parke, late of Groton, deceassed, and the other two conveyed by deed from Capt. Oliver Spicer as administrator of the estate of Capt. Abel Spicer, June 23, 1788 (consideration fifteen pounds and ten shillings); witnesses, Amos and Ruth Geer. He is said to have been a wheelwright and farmer, and was probably also a blacksmith, and seems to have lived while in Groton where the roads crossed, a most convenient location for his chosen occupation. He removed early in 1796 to New York State, where he became a large and prosperous landowner. He seems to have adopted the Quaker faith, using the "thee" and "thou" in his correspondence; his descendants say he was a Quaker. The record of his family has been collected from several descendants of the children. In 1790 his family consisted of two males over sixteen, two under sixteen, and seven females. | Spicer, Silas (I41760)

| 19947 | SIMEON COE, son of Andrew and Mary (Sanford) Coe, was born January 13, 1772, in Southbury, CT. His first wife, whom he marned there on April 8, 1792, was Betsy Ann Johnson. With his bride and his parents, he immediately followed his older brothers to Norway, Herkimer County, NY. His wife died during the early 1800s leaving him with four young children. About 1806 he married Roxy Lany Ellsworth, who was born January 19, 1785, in Bennington, VT, daughter of Stephen and Anna (Clark) Ellsworth. At the age of nineteen she had had a natural son, John Ellsworth, born March 10, 1804, in New York. On March 6, 1809, Simeon and his wife, Roxy, sold land in Norway to Arnold Willoughby for $625, comprising 50 acres. A couple of years later, in 1811, they moved to Scriba, Oswego County, NY, and were among the earliest settlers of that town. Simeon was a member of the 168th Regiment of Infantry at Fort Oswego, serving there during the War of 1812. In 1821 he was promoted from ensign to lieutenant Interesting was his old powder horn, which bore the date 1814, with a representation of the old fort, and the inscription, "The redcoat who steals this horn will go to Hell sure as you're born Sim Coe, his horn." Many years ago this relic was in the possession of a New York dealer, but was subsequently sold and all efforts to locate it have been fruitless. Roxy Lany died July 30, 1853, and Simeon followed her five years later, at the ripe age of eighty-six, on June 8, 1858. Both are buried in the old Sweet Cemetery at North Scriba. Their headstones with bold inscriptions still stand firmly. Simeon had thirteen children in all, four by his first wife, and nine by his second. Through the sons of this second set practically all the Coes of Scriba and Oswego, and most of those of Syracuse, are descended. | Coe, Simeon (I55281)

| 19949 | Simeon R. Trumbull - August 30, 1848 - January 9, 1940. Son of Horace I. and Nancy Bennett Trumbull. Husband of Mary J. Kane Trumbull (married November 5, 1873) & Sarah Jane "Jennie" Jones Trumbull (married March 17, 1880.) Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, January 10, 1940 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Pulaski's Oldest Resident Dies - Simeon R. Trumbull, 91 - Simeon R. Trumbull, 91, oldest Pulaski resident, died at his home on North street late Tuesday night. Mr. Trumbull had been in failing health for several months, but confined to his home only a few weeks. He was born August 30, 1848, in the Lehigh district, two miles east of the village, son of Horace I. and Nancy Bennett Trumbull. His father came to this section more than 100 years ago from Jay, Essex County, and settled in the vicinity where Mr. Trumbull was born. His maternal grandfather was Reuben Bennett who came to Oswego County in 1803 from Vermont and was one of the pioneer settlers in this section. When a boy he attended the Lehigh district school and later for his academic training, the old Pulaski Academy, where he was trained for teaching, graduating from that institution in 1863. He taught school in various localities in the towns of Sandy Creek and Richland and for a time when a young man was a cheese maker operating a factory in the Lehigh district. February 2, 1883 he entered the employ of the Railway Postal Service as a railway mail clerk and continued in this work, with the exception of a few months, for 37 years before retiring in 1920. During the few months in which he was not employed in the postal service he conducted a clothing business here. On March 17, 1880, he married Miss Sarah Jane Jones. Mr. Trumbull was of a very friendly and congenial nature and endeared himself to the many with whom he came in contact. He was always greatly interested in all the church, fraternal and civic activities of the community and especially in the welfare of the young couple. This was so definitely demonstrated in his loyalty and faithfulness to the church and fraternity of which he was a member. As a member and attendant of the Pulaski Methodist church for nearly 80 years, he served in many official capacities, for some time on the board of trustees, as Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school. He served on the village Board of Education from 1896 to 1917. Mr. Trumbull was well known in Masonic circles, becoming a member of Pulaski Lodge No. 415, F. & A.M. in 1880, 60 years ago. He was presented with the 50-year medal of the order in 1930 and had he lived until May 5, 1940, would have been presented with the 60-year palm. He served as master of the lodge 1896-97. In 1897 he became a member of Pulaski Chapter No. 179, R.A.M. and was high priest of the chapter 1900-01; joined Pulaski Chapter No. 159, O.E.S. in 1898 and was the second patron of that order. His remarkable ability to memorize and present much of the work of these fraternal orders together with his faithfulness in attendance at the meetings made him an outstanding member. His legion of friends will mourn the loss of the friendly and warm greeting of "Sim" as he was affectionately known by all. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Dr. Lawrence R. Trumbull of Auburn; a granddaughter, Virginia Florence Trumbull, senior in Boston University. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Masonic organizations attending in a body. There was a profusion of floral tributes. Following the services conducted by the Rev. W. A. Gardner, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Charles T. Holcombe of Watertown, former pastor, the Masonic services were conducted by Merritt A. Switzer, master of Pulaski lodge. The bearers were all Masons and included Mayor Harrison R. Franklin, Hugh F. Whitney, Fred Clark, Harry MacMorran, Frank Brundage and W. H. Bonner. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, Pulaski. Those attending the funeral besides his son and wife, Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Trumbull of Auburn, were his niece, Miss Mary Trumbull of Plattsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Austin of Fulton and Mrs. Jesse Lawton of Mexico. was a mason in Pulaski Lodge | Trumbull, Simeon R. (I63001)
