Newspaper Obituary - November 3, 1881 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Daysville District - Mr. Spencer Bentley died the morning of the 27th, inst., of pneumonia, after a very brief but severe illness, aged 68 years. He had been a resident of this town since boyhood. For the past two or three years he had not been in usual health, but none thought his end so near. He was upright and honest, a kind and obliging neighbor and an earnest Christian. For many years he had been an active and faithful member of the Methodist church. He loves the Sunday school and every Sabbath found him at an early hour, in his accustomed place as teacher of the Bible class. He leaves a devoted wife, three sons, and three daughters. The funeral was attended at his residence, Rev. Mr. Beebe officiating in a very appropriate manner.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, November 9, 1910 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Meacham District - Tuesday afternoon our community was startled by the sudden and unexpected announcement that our neighbor, Mr. Spencer Nelson was dead. He went to Richland in the forenoon and returned feeling as well as ever. After eating his dinner he went about his work as usual. He was born 85 years ago in Richland and has always lived in this town. Nearly 60 years ago he married Caroline Frances McCarty of Richland. Over 50 years ago he built and moved into his residence where he has since lived. Besides his wife, he leaves a son Thomas, and a brother, Mr. E. Nelson, of Selkirk, and two granddaughters. 20178 Springboro, Ohio -After her 5-year-old son died of flu at the beginning of the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, Serese Shampine Marotta has made it a mission to educate other parents about the devastating affects the disease can have on unvaccinated children.

Marotta, who grew up in Cicero and now lives with her family in Springboro, Ohio, in May filmed a public service announcement for the New York State Department of Health that encourages people to vaccinate their children.

“I think people don’t traditionally think of it as such a serious disease. That’s all the more why we wanted to share Joseph’s story. People don’t understand how many healthy children die each year from the flu,” Marotta said this afternoon.

Former Syracuse-area mom whose son died of flu warns others to vaccinate children

July 16, 2011 at 2:48 PM, updated July 16, 2011 at 3:57 PM

The flu kills nearly 100 American children under five years of age every year, according to Families Fighting Flu, a vaccination advocacy group.

Marotta and her husband, Joseph, are members of Families Fighting Flu, an organization that educates people about the need to get flu vaccinations.

The state Department of Health received a grant from the national Centers for Disease Control to create public service announcements about flu vaccinations.

The health department in turn contacted Families Fighting Flu to see if any of their families would be interested in taking part in the commercial, and the organization recommended her because of her New York ties, Marotta said.

Marotta is the daughter of the late race car driver Donald James Shampine.
She moved away from Central New York in 2006 with her family to Ohio for her husband's job. Her in-laws, Joseph and Barbara Marotta, still live in the area, she said.

Filming was done in May, and the public service announcements featuring Marotta speaking about the pain of losing a child began airing shortly thereafter.

The public service announcements are part of the health department's goal to raise the number of immunized children in the state, said Jeffrey Gordon, speaking for the health department. The state is seeing a return of some communicable diseases because children are not being vaccinated against them, he said.

“We’re really working to reach those parents who have a choice and can take action to immunize their children. They may not understand the risk,” he said.

People have a tendency to brush off the need for flu vaccinations because they don’t believe healthy children can die from the flu, Marotta said.

She, her husband, daughter Emma and Joseph, 5, had all received the seasonal flu vaccine in October 2009 when Joseph became ill and was hospitalized with pneumonia, Marotta said.

Tests for seasonal flu came back negative, and Joseph's doctors focused on treating the pneumonia. Later, doctors told the Marottas “this is the strangest thing his culture is growing influenza,” she said. Even then they told the family “its not a big deal, it’s just the flu."

"It was all of the sudden one evening his condition deteriorated rapidly over the course of hours. It went from -- what were we going to do when he was released from the hospital, to -- he 'codes' and passes away,” Marotta said.

Educating other parents about the dangers of not vaccinating children for the flu is “not going to bring Joseph back, but it feels good share his story,” she said.
