| 21060 | Utica Daily Press March 8, 1937 Herkimer - Mrs. Almeda McNitt Chapple, resident of Herkimer for the past 10 years and previously of Rome, died yesterday, Mar. 7, 1937, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Syilaboch, Beardslee Avenue, following a years illness. She was born May 12, 1871 in Richland, daughter of the late Frederick and Sophia McNitt. At the age of 12 she moved to Rome with her parents. In May 1890 she was married to Frederick Outtrim, Rome. He died in 1911. In 1918 she was married a second time, her husband being Edward Chapple, Rome. About 1920 they moved to Niscayuna and later to Herkimer. Besides her husband Mrs. Chapple leaves eight children by the first marriage, Mrs. Lena Richardson, Rome, Mrs. Mabel Syilaboch, Herkimer, Mrs. Irene Fredericks, Schenectady, Mrs. Marguerite Prossner, Rome, Mrs. Fred Grant, Utica, Dorothy Gilbert, Herkimer, LeRoy Outtrim, Richmond, Ind., Fred Outtrim, Rome. There are also four sisters, Mrs. Clara Chatteau, Ballston Spa, Mrs. Maude Allen, Verona, Mrs. Mercy Outtrim, Camden, and Mrs. Esther Dewey, Oswego, a brother Hiram McNitt, Oswego, and several grand and great grand children. She was a member of the Rome Universalist Church and of the Rebekah Lodge of that city. Kitchen, 52, of 212 Depeyster St., former head surgical nurse at Rome State School died Thursday in Roswell Park Hospital, Buffalo. She was born in Cortland, daughter of Rollo and Lucy Burlingame Briggs. She was educated in Chittenango schools and was graduated form Oneida City Hospital School of Nursing. After completing her nursing education, she was employed at Rome State School, retiring in 1954. Then; after three years private duty nursing, she became resident nurse at the Gerry Home for the Aged and Children, Gerry, N.Y. Ill health forced her retirement in 1960 and she returned to Rome to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Jerry L. Althouse. She was married in 1931 to Emmons L. Kitchen. Mrs. Kitchen was a member of the Oneida Free Methodist Church, its WSCS and CYC and the WCTU. Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, Edgar L., Rome; four brothers, Ralph Briggs, Seattle, Wash.; Harold Briggs, Cortland; Floyd Briggs, New York Mills, and Gerald Briggs, Cazenovia; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Grago, Syracuse and Mrs. Warren VanDeusen, Chittenango. The funeral will be at 2 Monday from the Oneida Fred Methodist Church with the Rev. W. Dale Buhl, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Verona Cemetery. Six years ago he went to Florida to live. While a resident of Hawkins Corners, in the town of Lee, he was engaged in farming, also dealing in cattle and horses in company at one time with H. N. Hawkisn. In Florida he was engaged in orange growing. He was well known in Rome and had the respect of his many acquaintances. He is survived by his wife and two children, N. M. Fillmore of Rome and Mrs. M. N. Wentworth of Lee, who, with her husband, went to Florida about three weeks ago on a visit. The deceased also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Galley of Lee Center, and Mrs. Caroline Walsworth of Ripon, Wis. and a brother, Albert Fillmore of Pulaski. Valerie was born December 6, 1938 in New York City. She graduated from SWA High School in Floral Park, NY and earned her Bachelor's Degree from SUNY Oswego. Valerie was married to Edward Nicholson on April 17, 1960. She was employed as an Elementary Teacher, teaching 5th grade, at Laura Sharp Elementary in Pulaski for 27 years, retiring in 1995. She also taught at Ohio St. Elementary in Watertown. Valerie was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Pulaski, the Pulaski Historical Society, Elms Golf Club and the ADE Sorority. Surviving are her husband, Edward, two sons, Thomas (Tammy) Nicholson of Ontario and Timothy (Malinda) Nicholson of Central Square, one sister, Diana Lawlor of Villages, FL, and three grandchildren, Ryan, Conner and Andrew. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 10th at St. James Episcopal Church, 24 Lake Street, Pulaski, NY 13142, with burial in Pulaski Cemetery. Valley, 97 of Pulaski, died Friday, at the Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, NY. He was born the second son of Leon L. and Jesse Kissel Valley on a farm near Maple View, NY, Oswego County. He went to the Fernwood Elementary and then on to high school at Pulaski Academy, graduating in 1934. Jim worked on the Valley Farm until 1936-37 and took a winter course at Cornell University in Poultry Husbandry. He was active in 4H Clubs for eight years and the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was a troop leader in Fernwood and Maple View, NY. He bought the family farm in 1942 and operated the same until 1974. He was able to pay off the mortgage in 10 years which was considered an accomplishment. He went to work for the New York State Department of Transportation in 1965 and retired in 1980. In his retirement years, Jim enjoyed gardening and home improvements for 20 years. Jim loved flowers and his church, the United Methodist Church in Fernwood since age 12. He was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Mexico Senior Citizens. Jim loved and trusted all his neighbors throughout his life and would like to Thank God for country living and being close to nature and praise god for giving him life. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Mable in 2008 and his siblings, Richard Valley, Wilbur Valley and Geraldine Schaefer. Surviving are his son, John D. (Geneva) Valley of King, NC; his daughter, Julie Snyder of Pulaski along with nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Monday from the Harter Funeral Home, 9 Washington Ave., Mexico, NY. Spring burial will take place in the Mexico Village Cemetery. Newspaper Obituary - Tuesday August 7, 1917 Fulton Times - Fulton, New York - Death of Valmore Weed - Had Been Working in Hay Field The Day Before Summons Came - Pulaski, August 6 - Valmore Weed, 56, a former resident of this village, died suddenly at about four o'clock Saturday morning at the Weed farm two miles east of Lacona. He was working in the hay field nearly all day Friday and retired at his usual hour. A few minutes before four o'clock in the morning, Mrs. Weed heard her husband breathing heavily and groaning as if in intense pain. He expired before a physician could reach the farmhouse. Mr. Weed was a native of the town of Sandy Creek and for a long time had made his home in Port street, this village, moving to Sandy Creek about twelve years ago. He was the manufacturer of a patent remedy, and for many years traveled about the country disposing of his product. A number of years ago he inaugurated the Cal Weed picnic, an annual event that usually attracted a crowd of nearly five hundred people to the picnic grounds at Sandy Pond. He was making arrangements for the 1917 gathering, which was planned for Wednesday, August 15. It was omitted last season for the first time since the series was established, on account of several cases of poliomyelitis in the eastern section of Oswego County. Surviving, besides his widow, is daughter, Mrs. Frank Gurley of Pennsylvania, who has been spending some time in Pulaski with relatives. | 21072 | VanAlstyne Funeral Is Held Monday Funeral services for Byron Edward VanAlstyne, 66, retired paper mill worker, of Dexter, were held at the Johnson Funeral parlors in that village Monday at 1 p. m., with Rev. Paul A. Roy, pastor of the Dexter M. E. church, officiating. Burial was made at Sandy Creek. Mr. VanAlstyne died February 9 in Mercy hospital, Watertown, where he had been under teatment since January 13 for a lung condition. He had been ill for about three months. Mr. VanAlstyne was born at St. Lawrence Corners, July 7, 1871, a son of William W. and Mary Haythorpe VanAlstyne. For several years he resided in Sandy Creek. In 1901 he married Mrs. Ellen Harris Tyler at Sandy Creek. Mr. and Mrs. VanAlstyne moved to the vicinity of Dexter 21 years ago and Mrs. Van Alstyne died there 17 years. Mr. VanAlstyne for several years was employed by the Warren Parchment company. He had been spending the winter at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Emory Timmerman, at Pillar Point. Author of this sketch is unknown. "Ethel Stewart was a descendant of this family. He settled at Petersburg, N. Y., married Esther Thurber. He signed a note with Morgan Thurber (a nephew of his wife) who failed to pay and he had to sell his farm to pay the debt, with what he had left he came to Williamstown, N. Y. The story goes that Morgan Thurber went further west, he killed a young Indian squaw, the Indians catched him and skinned him alive.Ethel Stewart is said to have helped build the first Baptist Church in Petersburg. His wife was very religious, always putting aside her work at sun down Saturday night and resuming it at sun down Sunday night. He was a man respected by all for he is called Esquire Stewart where he is mention in old histories. He was 81 years old when he died. Suppose to be buried somewhere in Oswego County. Rev. M. Howard St. Cyr, rector of St. James church, officiated and interment was made in Pulaski cemetery in the Acker lot. Mrs. Bishop had suffered a stroke early Friday morning and was found in an unconscious state by her sister, Mrs. Andrew Murray, who lives in the same house, about 11 a.m. Her death occurred late in the afternoon. Although her health had been poor for some time, she had been about her usual duties the day before, and had attended church services on Wednesday morning. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Robert Kellett of Dublin, Ireland, and Miss Ella M. Cooper of Syracuse; a brother, Howard W. Cooper also Syracuse, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bishop was born in Liverpool, England, May 30, 1878, a daughter of John and Jane Kellett Cooper. She came to Syracuse with her parents at the age of eight years. She was educated in Syracuse schools and was a graduate nurse from the Good Shepherd hospital, now the University hospital, in Syracuse. In 1910 she was married to James Acker, who for many years conducted a grocery business on the south side. After Mr. Acker's death in 1929, she returned to Syracuse and was married to William Bishop. After his death in 1937 she again came to Pulaski where she has since made her home the past 12 years. Mrs. Bishop was an active member of St. James church and took special interest in its societies. At one time she was director of the choir in that church. She was a member of Pulaski Chapter No. 179 Order of the Eastern Star, of the Women's Civic Club, and organizer of the Tuesday Study Club, in 1928, of which she was a charter member.
