Allen Jay "Butch" Maitland passed away on Jan. 10, 2021, at his home, with his wife Cathy by his side, following a brief illness.

Born Oct. 15, 1945, the son of Lawrence and Bessie (Woodard) Maitland in Henderson, NY, he graduated in 1963 from Henderson Central School and went to Jefferson Community College, earning an associate degree in business.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1966, and proudly served in the intelligence field. After Tech School and further training in Texas and Massachusetts, he was stationed in Hawaii and Southeast Asia. Butch was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Gallantry Cross with palm and various other medals. He was honorably discharged in 1970 at the rank of Sergeant.

He began his career in 1970 with Fays Drugs as a store manager, then later as a District Manager & Buyer. After leaving Fays in 1986 he started his own business, Rod & Rifle Sporting Goods. After serving in that role he took a position as the district manager at Bon Fair, continuing to work with the company after it was acquired from Stewart's, Inc. Butch also worked for Salin Vending Company before leaving for a position at The Jefferson County Journal, as advertising manager and writer. His passion for writing became a reality while working at The Journal, authoring many stories and articles for the paper. He retired from The Journal in 2014.

Butch was a member of the American Legion Post 588 (Brownville), an officer of the Adams Rotary Club, member & president of Jefferson County Sports Fisheries Advisory board, board member of the Henderson Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of Hospice Regatta Steering Committee, member of the South Jeff Chamber of Commerce Parade committee, member of Henderson Harbor Performing Arts Association and served on the weigh master team for over 20 years for the Henderson Harbor Derby committee.

In 1973 Butch married Candace Lawler and had three daughters. Although the marriage didn't last, Butch and Candy remained lifelong friends. On December 31st, 1985 Butch married Catherine Darling Maitland.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Cathy, seven daughters and three sons: Justin (Jayme) Rivers, Gillian Maitland, Ed (Jennifer) Rivers, Karie Maitland, Karie Maitland, Terry (Betsy) Rivers, Louisa Rivers, Michelle Rivers, Calen (Victor) Rodriguez and Minnie Maitland (Joe Valentine); 12 grandchildren; Riley, Caleb, Ruby, Brayden, Kaytlynn, Kiley, Jackson, Adriana, Callan, Jeter, Giavana & Aryah as well as numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins, including Eunice Wescott and Sallie Parker.

He was predeceased by his parents Lawrence & Bessie, his sisters Marie Ross & Judy Brooks.

In his earlier years Butch enjoyed local town team softball and basketball, and as Butch would say, "spending time with the good ole boys from Henderson." He treasured his time in the local shuffleboard league, making several life-long friends along the way. Through the years he enjoyed road trips with his wife Cathy and loved spending time with his family. He loved hunting with his sons and dancing with his wife and daughters. He took pride in taking everyone out on the boat, showing all the kids and grandkids how to fish and teaching them the waters of Lake Ontario, especially the famed "Bad Boy Island" to Riley, Caleb and Ruby. He shared many other passions with his family and friends including photography, Yankees baseball, Syracuse Basketball and Lacrosse, crosswords and all things related to nature.

His most enjoyable moments were spent doing things with his 10 children and their spouses, and in the later years his 12 grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors with his grandson, saying that, "showing Brayden about the outdoors and hunting was more fun than actually hunting himself." Butch was always present at all of his kids & grandkids' athletic games and other school activities. He was a selfless person who enjoyed volunteering his time to coach basketball with his daughter Minnie and the love he shared for the teams was immeasurable. He also found a new talent, home-schooling his granddaughter Adriana during the pandemic. Butch's zest for life was infectious to all around him and everyone knew his warm smile could instantly make a person feel the love he had for them. He will be greatly missed.

Wes served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Caliente from August 1961 to August 1965, and spent an additional four years in the Navy Seabees from August 1965 to August 1969, and was honorably discharged with eight years of Navy service.

Wes married Sandra Louise Shepard in January 1965. They had two sons: Patrick Christopher All, who passed away as an infant at a few days old; and a second son, James Lee All. Wes later married Nancy Carol Gammon on February 15, 1974, in Vancouver, Washington. Wes and Nancy had two children: Bonnie Elizabeth All and John Wesley All.

Wes completed high school while in the Navy. He later went for two terms to Walla Walla University. While married to Nancy, they moved from Portland to Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and later moved to Pendleton, Oregon, because of a job opportunity.

Wes worked at several jobs after discharge from the Navy. In 1973 he began truck driving for a window manufacturing firm in Portland, Oregon, driving an 18-wheeler to California, Oregon and Washington. Wes worked for Harris Pine Mills in Pendleton as a log truck driver for several years. In 1989 he began his own business as log truck owner-operator with his home base in Pendleton. Wes retired from truck driving in 1999 due to ill health.

Wes was proud of his eight years in the Navy and always claimed his military service helped him navigate life in many ways. Wes always had a drive to do more, become more skillful, make a better living for his family that he was proud of and loved. He was a member of the American Legion for many years, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Wes was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1975, and his faith in God was strong. 21439 Wesley David Ratliff - Monday, August 10, 2020 - With deepest sorrow, we announce that Wesley David Ratliff, age 31 our beloved son, brother, family member and friend passed away late afternoon on August 10, 2020 after being stricken by a massive heart attack. Those who knew Wesley, even just a little lost a shining light in their life. Wes was devoted to his friends, family, and the clients he worked with as an outreach specialist at Credo Community Foundation, often putting their needs before his own. He was a master conversationalist, listening intently while sharing his vast knowledge on a number of topics without ever making you feel insignificant. Wes’s sense of humor kept us all smiling and his perspective on life was unlike any others. He knew a cookie was a home for a chocolate chip. Wesley was a very private person, and so we will celebrate his life privately. There will be no public services. Wes will be missed everyday by his father Michael, his mother Pamela, brothers Devin, Derek, Warren, just like a brother Joe, his grandmother Jane Thomas, his loving Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and many great friends. 'Mr. West Almond' remembered - Chester Gosper left a legacy of dedication WEST ALMOND - Former town highway supervisor Leonard Watson said there was one way to describe Chester "Chet" Gosper, the recently-deceased former highway superintendent - Mr. West Almond. That distinction was one of many glowing ways West Almond residents described Gosper, who served as highway superintendent from 1958-90. Gosper, who was born on Tuttle Road Jan. 24, 1928, died Monday at his Turnpike Road home, leaving behind many accomplishments. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked at the Erie Railroad and a dairy farm from 1949-58, before beginning a long career as town highway superintendent. Those who knew him say honesty and humor were his greatest traits. Gosper's wife of nearly 57 years, Eleanor Gosper, said West Almond was "Chet's town." "He was the most honest, truthful person in town," Gosper said Wednesday. "He was just a remarkable person. He never wanted to rile people up. Just simply a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very loving of everyone." The Gospers were married Feb. 10, 1948 in town hall and would go on to have four children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Leonard Watson, a former town board member, began a renovation project this summer in Gosper's name on the 151-year-old former Methodist Church and grange on County Route 2 with the help of a large donation by resident Bruce Hitchcock. His decision came after Gosper had been diagnosed with diabetes and had both of his legs amputated. Watson said working with Gosper in the past had been a pleasure. "Chet would spend many hours sitting in on town board meetings," Watson said. "He was so nervous about how people felt and thinking of ways he could better help the residents. He knew what everyone was thinking, and was so concerned about the taxpayers. Also, he never bought or did anything without the board's approval. He was conservative in his proposals and didn't waste anything ... He was Mr. West Almond." Eleanor Gosper said her husband always asked to be taken on his wheelchair to see the community center with his name on it, and said he was thrilled with Watson's idea to go through with the renovation in his honor. She said her late husband took the town highway superintendent job in 1958 when the old superintendent became ill. "He wanted to take the challenge," Gosper said. "At the time, the town wasn't in that great of shape but he helped change it around. He really enjoyed his work. Years ago, during a large blizzard, he helped open a road to Angelica, which he was very proud of. He enjoyed plowing snow and other duties of his job. He took the current highway superintendent (Mike Sherman) under his wing when he worked there and helped him." Gosper's grandson, Chester Gosper IV, said his memories of his grandfather were and always will be warm and caring. "He was so honest and humorous," said Gosper, a director at Brown & Powers Funeral Home in Hornell, Canisteo and Angelica. "Everyone just loved him. He always had a lot to tell me in his later years and I liked to listen. Even when he lost his legs, he never blamed it on anyone, which is amazing because he was always a person who did everything for other people. He never once lost his sense of humor or personality." Don Hoffman, the town supervisor, said Gosper suggested he get involved with the town board back in 1985, before becoming supervisor in 1989. "He'd been a fixture in West Almond," Hoffman said. "He was a great guy and was here as long as I can remember. He was well-liked and respected by many people." In addition to being town highway superintendent, Gosper's wife said he was an active member of the Allegany Highway Superintendents Association and lifelong member of the Almond Rod and Gun Club. He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed barbecues and holidays, especially Christmas, said Eleanor Gosper. She said Gosper had attended Alfred-Almond School until he reached the ninth grade, and said the two had met when she grew up on nearby Jersey Hill Road and they would go sliding down snow hills on sleds as teenagers. Gosper, Chester A. Jr. (I33229)
