| 2407 | Charles L. Leroy - 1829 - January 22, 1917. Wife of Caroline Price Leroy. Married 1848. Section 2, Row 14. Newspaper Obituary - January 31, 1917 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Charles LeRoy was born in Whitesboro, Oneida County, ninety-one years ago and died in the county home at Mexico, January 22, 1917. Mr. LeRoy came to this town nearly seventy years ago and has made his home in this town and Mexico for the years since he left Oneida county. When a young man he sailed on the lakes. He was married when a little past twenty-one. His wife died a year ago last month. He had lived on a farm in the south part of this town many years until last fall, when, by a combination of adverse circumstances, he was taken to the county home. He had longed to depart this life and be with the wife who had preceded, and was very hopeful of a reunion in the "Better Land." As no provision was made for a funeral the remains were brought to Daysville cemetery, Friday noon, where the burial service was conducted by Rev. B. G. Seamans of Pulaski, and the man whom God had seen fit to spare nearly a century was laid to rest beside the wife who had so shortly preceded him. A beautiful bouquet of roses was resting upon his breast, placed there by his granddaughter, Mrs. Claude Hardy, of this village. He was a member of Daysville Grange. He leaves one son, Clayton LeRoy of this village. Agreeable to the wishes of friends who were disappointed in not having the privilege of attending funeral services the editor gives a brief religious expression based upon a passage of scripture found in the 20th of Revelation. "And another book was opened." The "book of life" is the book that concerns us very much. The book which the records are kept is the book we keep our eyes on. We are anxious that the records be favorable and the accounts show a balance on the right side of the ledger. We think, many of us, we know pretty well what the records will show when the book is opened to show our record. We have a notion that we know how the records stand concerning the other fellow's conduct, but we may be fooled. We may expect credit on things that will not show a bit of merit in them when the recording angel is putting them down the report. We say, sometimes, we do not understand why this young life is nipped off just when it is promising so much. We say we do not see why some other life is spared many years beyond the allotted time of man. We are confronted with a great mystery in these things. We do not know nor will we ever know why these things are. The life of Mr. LeRoy was not epically conspicuous for the accomplishment of things we esteem important and great. He labored on in the ways of life. He did things he ought not to have done, so have all of us; he left undone many things he ought to have done, so have all of us; but the books were being kept and they have, we believe, been opened and his recorded reviewed. We do not know how much good he did back forty years ago when he was a member of the Oswego County Praying Band. The fact that he did not spend his whole life in the service as a member of some praying band does not necessarily prove that he entered the eternal hereafter without a star on his crown. We are not the judges, the books will be opened and they will tell the story, they will prove our rights in the peace or torments of the hereafter. Mr. LeRoy has gone to his reward. His last days were not his best days. He may have been in any measure, responsible for the way they ended and others may have a part in settling the matter. He may have been created with deficiencies we do not understand. He may have been weak and could not measure up to the standard of self control that many others boast of being able to do. It is all a matter of uncertainty and we have only to leave it all with the Great Judge of the universe. He will smooth out the wrinkles if they are made by mistakes and influences which we do not create and can not control. Let us believe that this old man, over ninety years of age. was spared for some great lesson to the world, if not to take any distinctive part in the things we esteem of highest importance. | Leroy, Charles L. (I31053)

With this dear and loved companion he journeyed for over fifty-one years, passing many times out of the sunshine into the shadow, but with his companion by his side, he bore all the true philosophy of the man. When fell the blow that darkened his life and from this time was noted the decline of a vigorous and hopeful man. Mr. Calkins was the father of seven children. Three passed away in childhood. The ones left to mourn are Mrs. C. A. Niles, Buena Vista, Colorado; Mrs. L. R. Slater, Albany, New York; L. Grant Calkins of Schenectady; Charles W. Calkins of Rensselaer. Twelve years ago Mr. Calkins went to reside with his children in Colorado, making his home with Mrs. Niles. Then followed twelve weeks of suffering for the dear old father and of anxious watching for the daughter and her husband. On April 3rd at 4:40 p.m. the Master took him home and gave "Peace and Rest", which were almost the last words of the sufferer. His wish was to be laid to rest by the side of his wife in the home burial ground. This desire was carried out Mrs. Niles left Buena Vista, Colorado for Pulaski at 10:30 Monday evening, April 5th, with the sacred trust. Arrived at Syracuse where she was met by her brothers at 10:55 Thursday. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this village at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Of this church Mr. Calkins was an active member all through his early life and more mature manhood. Later in life he removed to Albany. | 2440 | Charles Walter Anson - died August 10, 1927, age 12 years. Son of Frederick and Ella Walter Anson. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 11, 1927 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Anson Boy Drowns - Father Tries To Save Son - Boy Loses Life on Last Dip Before Rejoining Picnickers on Shore - Handicapped by his shoes and clothing, Fred Anson of Clay was unable to save his 12-year-old son, Charles Walter, from drowning in Panther Lake, Oswego county, Wednesday afternoon, despite several attempts. Boys and girls of the Morgan M. E. church Sunday school class, which is taught by Miss Eunice Anson, a sister of the youngster, were enjoying themselves at their annual picnic when they decided to go in bathing after lunch. Shortly before 3:30 o'clock, Mr. and Mrs. Anson called the group from the water and told all to dress. Russell Olmstead, a chum of Charles Anson, was standing out in the lake about 15 feet and Charles took a notion to fake a last dip out where his friend was. He waded out, stepped on a rock within a few feet of Russell and slipped into deep water. Hearing the shrill cries, Mr. Anson doffed his coat and swam out to his son's side. He succeeded in grasping him several times. Once he had him almost out of danger, but something forced both under water and the son slipped from his father's grasp forever. Diving several times was of no avail. Mr. Anson could not locate the body on the floor of the lake. It was almost a half hour later when grappling hooks, which had been obtained from Clay, were hooked onto the shoulder strap of Charles' bathing suit and the body recovered. It was taken to the undertaking rooms of I. L. Tucker in Liverpool and later removed to the home on Euclid road, town of Clay. Private prayer service will be conducted at the home at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon and a half hour later in the Morgan M. E. church. Burial will be in Daysville, town of Richland. Charles Anson was a pupil in district 16 school in Clay and was to enter the fifth grade next month. He was a member of the Morgan M. E. church and active in the Sunday school class. Surviving besides the parents, Fred and Ella Anson, are two sisters, Eunice and Luella, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Walter of North Syracuse and Charles Anson of Liverpool. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday Evening, August 11, 1927 Syracuse Herald - Syracuse, New York - Father Makes Great Effort To Save Boy - Breaks Away Three Times to Frantic Effort to Beat Death - Panther Lake Scene - Last Rites for Charles Anson Saturday at Clay - With the mother and other members of the family standing horror stricken on the shore 15 feet away Fred Anson of Clay battled in the waters of Panther Lake, Oswego County, yesterday in a vain effort to save his son, Charles Walter, 12, from drowning. The body was recovered last night after a two-hour search by Edward Jones, Syracuse morgue attache. Although Panther Lake is out of the jurisdiction of the Onondaga County coroner's office, Jones made the trip alone at the searcher's request. He supervised the dragging. According to older residents on the lake side, this is the first drowning there. They tell of an old Indian legend that years ago a medicine doctor blessed the lake, and declared the waters never would take a human life. The family had gone to the lake on a picnic of the Morgan M. E. Sunday School. Miss Eunice Anson, sister of the boy, is a teacher in the Sunday School. The boys and girls of the class had been in the water most of the afternoon when Mr. and Mrs. Anson ordered them all out. Most of the youngsters obeyed. Charles was following the others to the shore when he noticed a chum, Russell Ormstead, standing in the water about 15 feet from shore. He took a last dive towards his playmate. As he stood up in the water his foot slipped on a rock and he plunged into a deep hole. His father saw the boy go under and heard his scream for help. He threw off his hat and coat as he stepped into the lake and rushed to the boy's help. He caught hold of his son and was dragging him to safety when the boy grabbed at him frantically and both went under. The father came to the surface and succeeded in catching the boy again but lost his hold. He caught the boy the third time and again the youngster's struggles caused him to lose his grip and the boy slipped out of his arms. He dived time and time again but was unable to find any trace of the youngster. Dragging equipment was called from Clay, but none of the searchers was experienced in its use and Jones was asked to help in the search. The body was taken to the family home where private funeral services will be held Saturday. Services will also be held in the Morgan Church and burial will be in Daysville Cemetery. The boy was a pupil of District 16 school. town of Clay. Surviving besides his parents and sister, Eunice, are another sister, Luella, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Walter of North Syracuse, and Charles Anson of Liverpool. | Anson, Charles Walter (I44667)
