BURNED TO DEATH

Mrs. Silas Clark and Her Daughter the Victims.

CREMATED IN THEIR HOME

Fire in Carthage.

A Terrible Casualty That Shocked the People of Mannsville Sunday Morning

Mannsville, Oct. 3.-At 3 Sunday morning fire destroyed the residence of Mrs. Silas Clark, between here and Pierrepont Manor, and burned Mrs. Clark and her daughter, Lucinda. Mrs. Clark, aged about 90 years, had been an invalid for many years, living with her unmarried daughter, Lucinda, and a widowed daughter, Mrs. Stephen Bateman, about half a mile south of Pierrepont Manor.

Just before 3 Sunday morning they discovered that the back part of the house was on fire. Mrs. Bateman ran to a neighbor (James Chaufty) for assistance who, with other near neighbors, hurried to the burning building, but too late to be of any assistance to those within, as the house was then a mass of flame.

As soon as the fire burned down water was thrown on and the body of Mrs. Clark was taken from the ruins, badly burned. The body of her daughter was found soon after, nearly consumed. The remains were taken in charge by Undertaker B. P. Laniard, of Pierrepont Manor.

The origin of the fire is unknown.

This is the worst calamity that has come to our neighborhood in many years and the whole community is horror stricken. Both of the ladies who lost their lives were active members of the M.E. church here. Mrs. Clark was from in Pulaski. After her marriage she resided at Lorraine and later removed to the place where she died, having resided here about 25 years.

Mrs. Clark was the mother of Mrs. Loren Fuller, of Philadelphia

Ella Mary King Wright - died April 6, 1915, age 65 years. Daughter of Don Alonzo and Mary Gridley Baker King. Wife of Rev. Joseph Harrison Wright.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 14, 1915 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Ella Mary King Wright, oldest daughter of Don A. King and Mary G. Baker, his wife, was born in Pulaski, New York, April 12, 1847. Her girlhood was passed in this place. She studied under Hon. N. B. Smith and finished the course of instruction in Pulaski Academy. Soon afterward she entered Vassar College for a year of study, which at that time was considered a doubtful procedure for a woman. She studied music in Boston with her sister, and was for several years before her marriage a teacher of music in Pulaski and vicinity. On April 26, 1876 she was united in marriage to Joseph Harrison Wright, a newly ordained minister at Davenport, New York. From this charge he removed in 1879 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in 1881 to Xenia, Ohio. In all these pastorates of the United Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Wright was a sympathetic and loyal pastor’s helper. In 1889 she was suddenly widowed and removed the next year with her seven children to Pulaski, to make the long fight alone for their support and education. She made her home continuously in Pulaski until the fall of 1912, since when she has been much of the time in Cleveland, Ohio, with her daughter. She has been a public spirited citizen of this community, as shown in her church and social life. She was many years President of the Women's Missionary Society of the Congregational church, and home Superintendent of the Sunday school. She was an ardent member of the Monday Historical Club and the D. A. R. For a year and a half she has patiently borne the gradually increasing illness which was her _ of _ into the life beyond. Her release came on Tuesday evening, April 6, in Cleveland, Ohio. She leaves a brother and sister and four children, Harrison King, of the _ Presbyterian _ _China; Marion Elizabeth, of East High School, Cleveland, Ohio; Robert Stewart, of the Public Service Commission, New York City; and Joseph Thatcher, assistant manager of Lodge & Shipley Machine Tool Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” The funeral services were held in the Congregational church, Friday, at one o'clock. Rev. H. A. Lawrence read the scripture and offered prayer and Rev. A. V. V. Raymond, D. D. pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian church of Buffalo, a lifelong friend of Mrs. Wright’s, spoke most appropriate and becoming words, paying just tribute to the life and character of the good woman. How true it was, as Dr. Raymond said, “She never was cast down.” What her life is been all who knew her experience best can tell, and best know how she accepted every cross as of God and by God's just and wise dealings. When her hearing was gone, it was the same, when sight was gone it was ever thus with her, not a complaint. How rich a legacy she has left to her family and friends and how we who knew her should cherish the example of her life. Her brother, Charles King, of Peoria, Illinois, her sister, Mrs. William _ _, her children, Marion, Robert, and Joseph were at the service, and other friends from away were: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gaylord, Mr. and Mrs. _ Curtis of _; Messrs. William J. and George _ of Adams, and Mr. Harrison H. Cole, of Sandy Creek.

GEORGE W. DOUGLAS

Head of Pulaski Natural Gas Plant - Recently Retired from Hardware Business

Mr. George W. Douglas, one of our leading citizens, came to this town forty-nine years ago, when his father, the late Rev. James Douglas, D.D., became paster of the Congregational church of this village. Mr. Douglas attended the Pulaski Academy and graduated from that institution in 1874, then prepared to enter Oberlin College, but poor health prevented him going on with his plans.

Mr. Douglas entered the hardware business when he was ready to begin a business career which was in 1879 and continued in that business until March first, 1913, when he was succeeded by T. Alexander Campbell. Eleven years ago, when the Tollner estate was about to dispose of the Pulaski Natural Gas plant, Mr. Douglas purchased the plant and is now treasurer and manager of the same. Under his managment the plant has been improved and since his retirement from business he has fitted up a fine office for the gas company's use in the Froude block.

From his early life Mr. Douglas has taken an active part in the affairs of the Congregational church. He has served as trustee, superintendent of the Sunday school and is now one of the board of deacons, which office he has held for many years.

In village affairs Mr. Douglas has always maintained a lively interest, having served on the board of trustees, the
school board and has beau a member of the cemetery board for twenty-five years, during which time he has a MM that Pulaski cemetery grounds and property very much modernised and improved for which improvements he has always been an earnest advocate.

Mr. Douglas has never been a politicial enthusiast, in the sense of seeking office but he has stood firm with the Republican party in his vote and influence.

The Douglas home in Jefferson avenue is one of the interesting places of our village and has been an attractive feature of the avenue. A great change is being made in the buildings. The home is soon to be set in the center of one
of the most desirable lots in the village, by removing the same a short distance to the north. The landscape artist will have ample opportunity to make his work tell on the spacious grounds surrounding Mr. Douglas's home, in which,
when completed Mr. and Mrs. Douglas will possess a place of comfort and convenience baring few if any superiors in this part of the state.

Douglas, had fallen asleep and was at rest from the long months of suffering which had been his to eiidure. His death was not a surprise to those close to him for death has been the inevitable event looked for and it was known that it could not be averted for everything in the realm of medical science had been done for the relief of the sufferer but to no permanent avail. Mr. Douglas began to decline nearly two years ago and found it impossible to get back to his normal health.

George W. Douglas was the son of Rev. Dr. James Douglas and was born at Rutland, Jefferson County, in 1856. Mr. Douglas was a member of Pulaski Congregational church from his youth. He served for many years as superintendent of the Sunday School, was on the board of trustees and has been a member of the board of deacons during a long period.

Mr. Douglas was a director of the Peoples National Bank. He was president of Pulaski Merchant's Association and in other capacities he served public life in the village.
