Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, March 20, 1993 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Constance Balcom Dies At 89 ¬Constance R. Balcom, 89, of 7343 Lake St., died Friday at St. Luke's Nursing Home, Oswego. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry officiating. Burial will be in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood, in the spring. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Ringgold Fire Department building fund or Northern Oswego County Ambulance. Surviving are five stepsons, Francis E., Pennellville, John R., Hannibal, Earl T., Milford, Ohio, David M. and Alton C., both of Pulaski; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Born in Pulaski, March 18, 1904, a daughter of David and Helen Burr Rogers, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1922. She graduated from Sandy Creek Teachers Training Class in 1923, and from Oswego State Teachers College in 1938. She taught elementary school at Pulaski Central School for 43 years, retiring June 30, 1967. She married Vann Balcom May 16, 1972, at Park United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. ME Balcom, a dairy farmer, died in February 1980. Mrs. Balcom was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Oswego County Retired Teachers Association, the Park United Methodist Church and its Alpha Class, Pulaski Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 157, the Pulaski Tuesday Study Club and the Rosa Garden Club. She was also a member and former trustee of Pulaski Public Library and a member of the Hilton Scholarship Committee..

Glen LaCelle, 92, of 7355 Port St., died Friday at Oswego Hospital.

Born in Orwell, Mr. LaCelle lived in the Pulaski area for most of his life.

He was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. in Pulaski before retiring in 1967 after 38 years.

His wife, G. Leone Johnson LaCelle, died in 1974.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski. Spring burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

The calling hour is from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 7385 Park St., Pulaski.

GRACE C. TAYLOR OF PULASKI DIES AT AGE 83

Grace C. Taylor, 83, of 7645 North Street, died Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, where she was taken after becoming ill at home.

The funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek, and at 10 a.m. at St. John's Evangelist Church, with Rev. Anthony Keeffe and Rev. Charles Aho officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Spring burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William (Mary Jo) Higler, Rockville, Md.; five grandchildren, and three cousins.

She was born Aug. 6, 1905, in Syracuse, daughter of John and Grace Clark O'Leary. She was graduated from Pulaski High School and from the Pulaski Teachers Training Class and Oswego Normal School. Before her marriage, she taught in Pulaski rural schools and at the Pulaski Elementary School.

She married Franklin J. Taylor on Oct. 12, 1936. He owned and operated the Taylor Funeral Home here from 1939 to 1967. Mrs. Taylor assisted her husband in the funeral business until their retirement in 1967. He died Dec. 18, 1968, at the age of 59.

Mrs. Taylor was a communicant of St. John's Evangelist Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Pulaski Civic Club, Pulaski Grange 730 and Pulaski American Legion Post #358 Auxiliary.

Steinfeld, died at 6:50 p.m. Monday, April 19 in the emergency room of the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown. The funeral was 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Austin, pastor of Fernwood United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in South Richland Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Carl J.; a brother, Max L. Geer, Pulaski; two nieces; a nephew, and two step-sons, John Steinfeld, Parish and Robert Steinfeld, Sebastian, Florida. Born January 21, 1904 at Daysville a daughter of Lewis and Belle Groff Geer she was graduated from Pulaski Academy High School, Pulaski Teachers Training Class and Oswego Normal School. She married John Cooper July 11, 1929. Mr. Cooper, a farmer, operator of a coal business, former roofing and siding contractor and manager of the Pulaski Bowling Center, died December 10, 1971. She married Carl J. Steinfeld July 30, 1977. Mrs. Steinfeld taught in the White District, Town of Richland and later at Fernwood and Richland. She transferred to Pulaski Academy and Central School and retired in 1969 after a 34-year teaching career. She was a member of the Fernwood United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of the Fernwood Grange 256, a member of Pulaski Chapter 159 Order of the Eastern Star and the Retired Teachers Association.

Schuster, 81, of 616 Jefferson St., Pulaski, died Friday, September 5 in St Joseph's Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Shuster was born in Albion. She graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School and the Pulaski Teacher's Training Class. Employed by William S. Curtiss in Richland for many years. Mrs. Shuster was a member of Park United Methodist Church, Pulaski Chapter 159, OES. Daughters of the American Revolution, the Pulaski Historical Society, the Tuesday Study Club and ROSA Garden Club. Her Husband, Clarence, died in 1978. Surviving are a son, Thomas B. Stewart of Syracuse, a sister, Mae C. Worme of Pulaski; and two grandchildren. Services were held at the Foster Hax Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

A life-resident of the Pulaski-Fernwood area, Mrs. Balcom taught in the Pulaski Central School District for many years. She married Robert E. Balcom Dec. 25, 1932. Mr. Balcom died Nov. 3, 1973. Mrs. Balcom was a communicant of St. James Episcopal Church. She was a member OES Chapter No. 159, the Pulaski Grange and the Pulaski Civic Club.

Norma B. Heckle, 97, Springbrook Apartments, died Friday at Maplewood Nursing Home, Webster.

She was co-owner of the Selkirk Lighthouse with her son for many years.

Born May 12, 1905, in Pulaski, daughter of Frank and Jessie McRobbie Bonney, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1923 and attended Oswego Normal School.

She married Joseph F. Heckle on Jan. 11, 1926. He died Nov. 29, 1950.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane H. Brown, Sackets Harbor, and Joyce H. Dolan, Houston, Texas; two sons, Joseph F., Pulaski, and John A., Sun City, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse.

A calling hour will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Foster- Hax Funeral Home.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Park United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two nephews.
Born Jan. 4, 1907, in Richland, daughter of Tracy and Blanche Petrie Burch, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School and later from Oswego Teachers College. She taught at schools on Long Island and later at Altmar School for many years, retiring in 1970.
She first married James R. Lugar, who died Aug. 15, 1962. She married Hugh Worme in 1975.
She was a member of the Pulaski Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 159 and served as a grand chaplain at one time. She was also a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Oswego County Retired Teachers Association, the Pulaski DAR, Park United Methodist Church, the Pulaski Tuesday Club and the Pulaski Civic Club.
