Born in Richland, he graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1936 and attended Cornell University. He owned a dairy farm and was a cattle dealer, and formerly worked at Sealright, Fulton. He was a member of Mexico Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Pulaski Grange 730 and Crouse-Hinds Retirement Club and was a life member of U.S.S. Lake Champlain Association. He served in the Navy during World War II. His first wife, the former Esther Jacobsen, died in 1989; a son, Duane, died in 1993. Survivors: His wife, the former Jeannette Dean; three daughters, Joanne A. Moffett of Arlington, Va., and Judith A. Workman and Gayle R. Bickerstaff, both of Pulaski; three sons, Frederick C. of Pulaski, Terry A. of Mexico and Barry O. of Pascagoula, Miss.; two stepdaughters, Linda Compson of Fulton and Patricia Purtee of Englewood, Fla.; a stepson, David Kersey of Pennellville; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. SHIRES NURSE’S AIDE Watertown Daily Times (NY) - March 1, 1999 Christine Ahrendson Shires, 82, Sunrise Nursing Home, Oswego, formerly of Pulaski, died Saturday in Oswego. Mrs. Shires retired after 15 years as a nurse’s aide at Oswego Hospital. She lived in Pulaski and Mexico before moving to Oswego. Born May 26, 1916, in Watertown, daughter of Charles and Maude Farmer Ahrendson, she graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1938. She was a deaconess at the Church of the Nazarene, Fulton, a former Girl Scout leader in Mexico and an airplane spotter during World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Judith Fultz, Oswego; three stepdaughters, Erma Edwards, Grovene Dolan and Polly Mullen, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her second husband, Ralph A. Walton, her third husband, George R. Steele, her fourth husband, Emery Shires, and a granddaughter died before her. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 E. Goodsell, 80, of 1930 Prairie Dunes Circle North, Lakeland, Fla., died July 3 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. A machinist, he managed his family's Goodsell's Feed & Grain store in Fernwood for 31 years. He was a zoning officer and constable in Pulaski from 1976 until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Goodsell enjoyed working in his shop, playing shuffleboard and woodworking. He was a member for 30 years of the Pulaski Lions Club, where he both was the oldest member and the longest-serving member. Beginning in 1984, Mr. Goodsell and his wife, Betty, spent winters in Lakeland and summers at their cottage in Pine Grove near Pulaski. He was a member of Victory Assembly of God, Lakeland, where he was an usher, and attended Pulaski Assembly of God. Born April 9, 1918, at Fernwood, son of Charles Frederick and Grace Goodsell, he graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School in 1937. He married Hilda B. Jones on Aug. 15, 1947, at the home of his parents in Fernwood. She died April 23, 1989. He married Betty A. Kling Sept. 8, 1990, at the Pulaski Methodist Church with the Rev. Betsy Mowry, pastor, officiating. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Chris F., Mexico, and Larry H., Pulaski; a daughter, Kay G. Fratello, Pulaski; three stepchildren, Michael E. Allport, Pulaski, the Rev. David B. Allport, Lima, and Vicki M. DeMoors, Phoenix; a brother, Louis C., Pulaski and Pine Grove, 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at Pulaski Assembly of God, North Road, with the Rev. Thomas W. Walker, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are with the National Cremation Society, 914 S. | 3544 | Class of 1937 PACS ROCHE Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - June 27, 2013 William J. “Bill” Roche June 25, 2013 William J. “Bill” Roche, 92, of Syracuse passed away Tuesday, June 25 at the VA Medical Center. Bill was born July 23, 1920; the second son of the late Michael L. and Sarah (O’Toole) Roche. Bill graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School and served in the Army Air Corps in Italy during WWII. Upon his return from the war, he graduated from Niagara University and Albany College of Pharmacy. Bill met Betty Byrne one summer in Pulaski while working as a pharmacist. They married in 1952, and resided in Syracuse where Bill owned and operated Roche Pharmacy on S. Geddes St. for more than 10 years. He later worked at Leo Branch Pharmacy in the Yates Hotel, and retired at age 73 after working for many years at Rite Aid Pharmacy. Bill and Betty were active members of the Bellevue Country Club where they enjoyed golf and bowling. Bill loved spending summers at the family camp at Pine Grove on Lake Ontario with his seven children and large extended family. Bill was a quiet and dignified man, the quintessential gentleman who never missed an opportunity to dance to his favorite song “Mack the Knife.” He was always and forever a fan of the NY Yankees, who loved his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren. Throughout his life, Bill’s faith never wavered, and helped him overcome the challenges that he faced. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Betty; his brothers, Ed and Jack; and his sons, Bill and Matt. He is survived by daughters, Betsy of Sarasota FL; Maureen Ganley (Bill) of Baldwinsville; Sarah Roche of Syracuse; Bridget Servatius (Michael) of Walpole, MA and his son, Mark (Fran Donovan) of Carlsbad, CA. Also surviving are daughter-in-law, Lou Ann of Patchogue LI; grandchildren Chris and Kate Roche, Taylor Fisher, Erin Ganley; and many nieces and nephews from both the Roche and Byrne families. Services to honor Bill will be held Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at his church, Most Holy Rosary on Roberts Avenue. Mr. Miller had resided in Mexico since 1965 and formerly lived in the Pulaski area. He owned and operated Walt’s Garage for several years. He also was a dairy farmer and operated Miller Potato Farm, Williamstown, for many years. He had been employed at his son’s business, Steve’s Body Shop, for the last 14 years. He was a member and former trustee of Pulaski Wesleyan Church and for many years was a committeeman for the Oswego County Conservative Party. Born May 5, 1918, in Syracuse, the son of Walter and Elizabeth Austin Miller, he graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1936 and Farmingdale Agricultural and Technical Institute in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945, in the European theater of war. He flew 35 bombing missions and was discharged as a captain. He married Josephine Weber on June 7, 1963, at the Congregational Church of Pulaski, with the Rev. Donald Swartout officiating. Surviving besides his wife and his son Steve, of Mexico, are two sons, Wayne, Wikieup, Ariz., and Earl, Pea Ridge, Ark.; two daughters, Ann Whitlock, Mascotte, Fla., and Lori Leese, Carnation, Wash.; a stepson, Edward Moyer, Fulton; a sister, Elizabeth Clayton, Newton, Iowa; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski, with the Rev. Steven Bean officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery. She attended Iowa University and Marywood College, Scranton, Pa., and received a registered nursing degree from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Logan was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Baltimore for several years. A marriage to Dr. Frank H. Logan in 1946 ended in divorce. Mrs. Logan was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Lumberton. Surviving are a sister, Mary T. Brown, Lumberton, a summer resident of Tupper Lake, and several nieces and nephews.
