CLEMENS Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - August 21, 1999Browse Issues Alice Colvin Clemens, 76, of Comins Road,Osceola,died Thursday at Seneca Hill Manor Adult Home, Oswego. Born in Orwell, she grew up in East Syracuse and lived most of her life in Osceola. She and her husband operated a farm until 1956. She began playing a half-size fiddle at age 7 and, at 26, formed the Alice and Her Cousins band, which played many years at the Redfield Hotel and Falvey Pavilion. She retired from fiddling competitively after winning the state ladies championship three years in a row. She helped found the New York State Olde Tyme Fiddlers Association in the middle 1970s and the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame in Osceola in 1981. She was inducted into both the state and North American halls of fame and was one of the first recipients of the Traditional Arts of Upstate New York's North Country Heritage Award, among other honors. She appeared or performed at the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Grand Central Station "I Love New York" campaign, and the Harvard Arts Center. She recorded numerous fiddling compositions, taught and lectured, and wrote newsletters on fiddling. Her husband of 50 years, Erwin, died in 1991. Survivors: Four daughters, Sharon Clemens of Osceola, Leona Chereshnoski of Lorraine, Diana Carpenter of Constableville and Alice Briggs of Camden; a son, John E. of Saginaw, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. Clemens, 76, Comins Road, died Thursday at Seneca Hill Manor Adult Home, Oswego. Mrs. Clemens was co-founder of the Olde Tyme Fiddlers Association and the North American Fiddler's Hall of Fame, Osceola, serving in many capacities in both organizations. Born Oct. 18, 1922, in Orwell, a daughter of Lee and Mary Russell Colvin, she grew up in East Syracuse and spent summers with her grandparents in Orwell. She married Erwin Clemens, Feb. 12, 1941, in Cumberland, Md. The couple lived in Osceola where they owned and operated a dairy farm. Mrs. Clemens developed an early love for the fiddle from the music played by the Colvin Family Orchestra made up of her aunts and uncles. She was loaned a half-size fiddle when she was 7 and began to play with just a few formal lessons. During the 1930s, she played at house parties, church groups and Grange meetings and amateur hours. At age 26, she formed the Alice and Her Country Cousins band which performed for many years at Redfield Hotel and Falvey Pavilion, and at area dances. She won the New York State Ladies Championship competition, held at Enchanted Forest, Old Forge, for three consecutive years. She was inducted into both the New York State and North American Fiddlers halls of fame as well as the statewide Country Music Association Hall of Fame. She received the Traditional Arts in Upstate New York's North Country Heritage Award, New York State Tug Hill Commission Sage Award and the Ray Cronk Memorial Trophy from New York State Olde Tyme Fiddlers Association. Mrs. Clemens performed at Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, in Grand Central Station for the I Love New York campaign, with various Canadian fiddle groups, at the Harvard Arts Center and for touring Russian athletes. She recorded "Fiddlin' Fun," "Fiddlin' Fever," "Your Fiddlin' Friend," "Poetry Recitation," and lesson tapes. In addition, she composed "New York State Waltz," "Alice's Midnight Waltz," "Jigg's Jig," "Alice's Reel," and "The Three Boys Hornpipe." She took first place intermediate level awards at the National Traditional Contest, Barre, Vt., and competed at the Grand Masters, Nashville, Tenn., the Canadian Open, Sherburne, Ontario, NYS Championship Contest, Old Forge, where she was four-time champion, and won a second-place award at NYCAN (New York-Canada) Contest, Osceola. Mrs. Clemens lectured and demonstrated fiddling at schools, libraries, community events and museums as well as on television and radio. She organized the North Country contingent of fiddlers who performed at the Statue of Liberty celebration in 1986, and has taught workshops and private lessons throughout the state. She served as master of ceremonies for the Genesee Country Museum's Fiddlers Fair from 1983 to 1998, and at other state fiddlers events. She served as editor of the Olde Tyme Fiddlers Association newsletter from 1978 to 1993 and had many articles published in national newsletters. Surviving are four daughters, Sharon Clemens, Osceola, Mrs. Ray (Leona) Chereshnoski, Lorraine, Mrs. James (Diana) Carpenter, Constableville, and Mrs. Neil (Alice) Briggs, Camden; a son, John Erwin Clemens, Saginaw, Mich; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Milton was a Sergeant in the US Marine Corp and served in the Pacific Theatre World War II. He was a plumber by trade and was retired from civil service at Cherry Point Air Station. A native of Pulaski, Mrs. Costello lived in Mexico 48 years. She retired in 1980 as an account clerk after 20 years with the State University of New York at Oswego. She was a graduate of Pulaski High School. Mrs. Costello was a communicant of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church and a member of its Women's Guild, the Mexico Historical Society and the Secretaries Association at SUNY Oswego. She was the Mexico area organizer for several years of the annual Hope Appeal. On September 16, 1944, she was married to Clark E. Briggs in Pulaski. She had taught school in Hannawa Falls and Baldwinsville, NY. Mrs. Briggs was a member of the New Hartford First United Methodist Church, Faxton-St. Luke's Volunteer Association, the Republican 100,000 Club, the Daughter's of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and the New Hartford American Legion Auxiliary. She was a former member of the American Association of University Women, New Hartford Lioness, Women of the Elks, the Masonic Home Auxiliary and the Skenandoa Country Club. She is survived by her husband, Clark Briggs; one son, Daniel and his wife, Iris; two daughters, Nancy Lillibridge and her husband, David and Patricia Davern and her husband, William; grandchildren, Gregory, Julianna and Emily Lillibridge and Shawn and Matthew Davern.
