W. Howard Goodwin, age 89, life resident of Pulaski, passed away Monday. Howard was born November 11, 1923, in Port Ontario. He graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1941. Howard was a World War II veteran, and served as a sergeant in the 2140th Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, where he was crew chief for the maintenance of B-24 Liberator Bombers across Central Europe. Following the war, Howard married his wife of 66 years, Thelma K. Fraser, on June 11, 1946. He was employed as an auto mechanic for Johnny Snyder in Pulaski. He was later employed by D.W. Winkelman Construction Company as a sales and serviceman for heavy equipment for many years, and he also worked for Mid-State Industrial Supply in Syracuse.

Howard was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and a 50-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He enjoyed square dancing with Thelma and tending to his large vegetable garden well into his late 80s. He was a “jack-of-all-trades” - there was nothing that he couldn’t build or fix. Howard was the supportive and loving father of three daughters as well as a devoted grandfather of four grandchildren.

Surviving: his wife, Thelma Fraser; his daughter, Patricia Goodwin of Rochester; his daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Gary Holthouse of Oswego; his daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Richard Kolenda of Oswego; four grandchildren, Russell Holthouse, Sally Holthouse-Barlow, Steven Kolenda and Emily Kolenda; and one great-granddaughter, Mira Holthouse. He is also survived by his brother, Jack, and two sisters, Genevieve McAfee and Rosemary Ciocca. He was predeceased by his brother, Jim, and sister, Barbara.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Our Light Parish, 23 Niagara Street, Pulaski, with burial in Pulaski Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski.

Dr. Hugh McChesney

Dr. Hugh McChesney, age 86, life resident of Pulaski, passed away Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. Hugh was born on June 25, 1924, the son of Frank E. and Ruth Austin McChesney. He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1940. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1944, and in 1947, he earned his MD from Syracuse University. He married Nancy Woods on June 27, 1948. He served in the United States Army 101 Air Borne Division from 1950 until 1953.

Dr. McChesney opened a general practice in Pulaski in 1950 that he operated for over 50 years. He was also the medical director at the Pulaski Health Center from 1974 until 1995. Dr. McChesney was a former member of the Pulaski Village Board, the Pulaski School Board and the Pulaski Congregational Church. He was also honored with the Pulaski Service Man of the year award in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy; two sons, Dr. James (Anita) McChesney of Portlandville, NY and Thomas (Jeanne) McChesney of Brewerton; two daughters, Barbara (Les) Apigian of Amherst, NH, and Janet (Garry) Glissmeyer of Colorado Springs, CO; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family, September 25, in Pulaski Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Pulaski Congregational Church, 27 Lake Street, Pulaski, NY 13142.

Norma R. Holmes, age 89, life resident of Pulaski, passed away Thursday at Seneca Hill Manor in Oswego. Norma was born August 25, 1923 in Pulaski. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1941. Norma married Richard Holmes on May 11, 1943, and he passed away November 19, 1971. She was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Co. at Nine Mile One for 10 years, retiring in 1989. She was also employed by General Telephone in Pulaski for many years. Norma was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and former member of the Pulaski Grange.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Holmes of Georgetown, CO and Scott (Jennifer) Holmes of Pulaski; one brother, Paul Ingersoll of Syracuse; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Norma was predeceased by one son, James R. Holmes who died July 2, 1996, and two grandsons, Jeffery Holmes who died in 1993 and Kyle Holmes who died in 2002.

Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski with burial in Pulaski Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mildred G. Dawley, 66, of Deerfield Apartments, 7633 Delano St., died Wednesday at her home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry, pastor of Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 7385 Park St.

Surviving are a daughter, Connie L. Roberts, Liverpool; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Donald Balcom, Syracuse, and Lyle "Speedy" Balcom, Pulaski; and a sister, Shirley Hort, Pulaski.

Born in Pulaski Sept. 13, 1924, a daughter of Charles and Leona Lighthall Balcom, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1940. She later attended cosmetology school in New York City.

Mrs. Dawley was a life resident of Pulaski and a member of the Pulaski Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 7289.

A marriage ended in divorce.

Marion L. Greene

Rexford

Marion L. Greene, 82, of Rexford, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2006.

She was born in Pulaski, NY and was the daughter of the late Matthew and Myrtle Brown. Mrs. Greene had been a resident of Rexford since 1955. She worked for General Electric Co. from where she retired. Marion was an accomplished artist, and for many years, showed her work in the Stockade.

She was the beloved wife of 51 years to William M. Greene. She was the devoted mother of Gary Greene and his wife, Virginia of Bow, NH, Robert Greene and his wife, Ellen of Moline, IL and Janet Aitchison and her husband, Tom of Middleway, WV. Marion was the sister of Annie Matachiero of Latham and Bob Brown of Sachetts Harbor, NY. Also surviving are nine cherished grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions would be appreciated to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter in memory of Marion L. Greene.

Albert Naylor Leach, 65, of Route 49, Constantia, died Saturday at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton.
Mr. Leach was a native of Newark, N.J., and resided in Syracuse before moving to Constantia. Mr. Leach retired in 1982 after 35 years with the Alling and Cory Corp. He was an Army veteran of World War II and member of the Craftsmen Club at Alling and Cory.
Surviving are his wife, Esther Douglas Leach; nine stepchildren, George, Maurice and Kevin Douglas, Sandra Amodei, Pamela Douglas, Maureen David, Elaine Douglas, Teresa Douglas and Bridged DiSerio; and several cousins, including Betsy Strack and James and Arthur Naylor.
Services will be at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James St., at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Irma M. Corbett, 82, Pulaski, died Tuesday at Oswego Hospital.

Born Aug. 26, 1925, in Orwell, daughter of Claude and Mary Helbock Warren, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1942 and had resided in Port Ontario since 1947.

She married Richard A. Corbett on Jan. 5, 1948, in Pulaski.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Joseph W., Albany; a daughter and her husband, Kristin and Allen Tupper, Wilmot Flat, N.H.; two brothers, Robert Warren, Pulaski, and Jack Warren, Penn Yan, and two sisters, Minetta Colwell, North Carolina, and Margaret McMorrow, Ithaca.

A sister, Isabelle E. Moran, and a brother, Milton Warren, died before her.

A private graveside service will be Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery, Orwell.

There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Foster-Hax Funeral Home.

He retired in 1986, and previously worked for the former O'Neal Construction Co. and the Tennessee Valley Authority in the maps and survey division.

Born in Pulaski, N.Y., he graduated from Pulaski Academy Central High School in 1942, and attended Syracuse University.

He was a sergeant in the Army, serving occupation duty in Japan.

He was a member of the Holyoke Lodge of Elks 902 and a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union Local 108.

His wife, the former Patricia Trotman, died in 1988. He leaves four sons, Richard Jr. and Glenn, both of Southampton, Les of Westfield, and James of Holyoke; a daughter, Patricia Spath of Granby; two brothers, Harold of Pulaski and Herbert of Syracuse, N.Y.; three sisters, Jacqueline Gallagher and Beverly Dvett, both of Pulaski, and Joyce Barkley of Syracuse; 14 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday morning at Messier Funeral Home, with burial in Forestdale Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Beverly R. Genter, 82, of 16992 County Route 76, died Sunday at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse.

Mrs. Genter was born June 2, 1925, in Pulaski, daughter of Pratt and Margaret L. Adelmann Balcom. She graduated in 1942 from Pulaski Academy and Central School and was an operator for Upstate Telephone Co., Pulaski, for several years.

She married Robert E. Genter on Sept. 22, 1945, at Pulaski with the Rev. James N. Pawley officiating. They lived at Black River for more than 40 years, spent summers at Guffin Bay for more than 30 years and later spent winters in Florida.

After her husband's death on Jan. 30, 1991, Mrs. Genter moved to Adams Center.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening and crafts.

Surviving are a son and his wife, Raymond G. and Sylvia, Harrisville; a daughter and her husband, Peggy E. and Martin Mancari, Adams Center, two brothers, Pratt Balcom and Stephen Balcom, both of Pulaski; three sisters, Edith Frary, Pulaski, Katherine Parkinson, Yorktown, Va., and Alice Ward, Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Allan R. Genter, died Feb. 5, 1992. A sister, Margaret M. Moore, died Jan. 16.

Donald F. Crandall, 73, Springbrook Apartments, died Thursday at his home.

Mr. Crandall worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Pulaski for 33 years, retiring in 1980. A life resident of the Pulaski area, he served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a pharmacist mate third class.

He was a member of Park United Methodist Church.

From 1960 to 1988, he was a member of the Ringgold Fire Department, where he was a past chief and president. He was a member of the Pulaski Masonic Lodge 415, F&AM, and a member and deputy grand master of the International Order of Odd Fellows District 2. He was also a member of the Watertown Shriners and of the Elms Golf Club Wednesday night men's league, Sandy Creek.

Mr. Crandall was a village trustee and police commissioner for Pulaski from 1980 to 1988, and was recognized as Man of the Year by the Pulaski Service Club in February 1986.

He was a former member of local barbershop quartets and a swing-style band.

Born July 20, 1925, at Orwell, a son of Rex E. and Dorothy Potter Crandall, he graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1942. He married Viola K. Hoops on Sept. 2, 1949, at Pulaski Methodist Church with the Rev. James N. Pauley officiating. The marriage ended in divorce.

Surviving besides his companion, Doris Cornell, are five daughters, Nancy J. Kates, Scottsville, Dianne F. Ingraham, Tampa, Fla., Donelle A. Sullivan, Lacona, Margo E. Orton, Pulaski, and Jana E. Craig, Houston, Texas, and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park St., with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry, pastor of Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

James M. Cleveland, 63, Pulaski, died Tuesday morning at his winter home in Titusville, Fla.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Park United Methodist Church, with Rev. Earl M. Smith officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 7385 Park St. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Robert Edwards Post 358, American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie; two sons, David, Pulaski, and Douglas, Homestead, Fla.; two grandchildren; his mother, Alice Cleveland, Pulaski, and a sister, Marilyn Mathison, Pulaski.

Born in Pulaski on Dec. 6, 1924, a son of Nathan and Alice Babcock Cleveland, he was graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School in 1942.

He married Marjorie Shaw on July 17, 1948, in the Community Baptist Church, Binghamton.

Mr. Cleveland served in the Army Air Force from March 1943 until December 1945. He was later employed as a rural mail carrier by the Pulaski Post Office from 1955 until retiring in 1985.

He was a member of Park United Methodist Church and a life member of Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358, having held all elective offices in the organization. He was also a past county commander, a past New York State district commander and a past New York State department vice commander.

Mr. Cleveland was a member of the New York State Rural Letter Carriers Association and a past president and vice president of the association. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Forty-Eight Club.

He was also a life member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the New York State Pistol Association, a charter member of the Pulaski Lions Club, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and an instructor of the Salmon River Junior Rifle Club.

JOHNSTOWN - Private services will be held for Mrs. Jane O. Barney, 74, of Johnstown, who died Sunday at her summer home in Caroga Lake.

Born in Pulaski, Mrs. Barney was a graduate of Pulaski Academy and Central School. She was a graduate of the Cross Irving Hospital Nursing School in Syracuse.

From 1945 to 1950, she was an operating nurse at Swedish Hospital in Brooklyn. She was also a private duty nurse for many years. From 1973 to 1983, she was the office nurse for a doctor in Brooklyn. She retired in 1983 and moved to Johnstown.

Mrs. Barney was a member of the Bay Ridge United Methodist Church in Brooklyn and attended the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Brooklyn.

Survivors include her husband, Richard A. Barney; a daughter, Ellen B. Wright of Manchester Center, Vt.; a son, Robert K. Barney of Moodus, Conn.; two sisters, Ruth O. Welle of Mud Lake and Dorothy Endsley of Redfield; a brother, Kenneth Ostrander of Pulaski; and six grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.

Cremation will take place at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.

Martin, 67, County Route 48, died Wednesday at the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Richland Church of Christ with the Rev. Robert Fogleman and the Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski. Surviving are his wife Beulah; two sons, Robert Jr., Richland, and Timothy, Orwell; three daughters, Linda Martin, Richland, Robin Holmes, Orwell, and Tammy Broadhurst, Sandy Creek; 20 grandchildren, a great-grandson; three brothers, William and Harry, both of Richland, and Edward, Melbourne, Florida; and a sister, Dorothy Weed, Central Square. Born May 17, 1924, in Richland, son of Edward and Hattie Bowers Martin, he was a 1942 graduate of Pulaski Academy High School. He married Beulah Stafford August 23, 1947. Mr. Martin was a life resident of Richland. He retired in 1968 from Schoeller Technical Papers, Pulaski. Mr. Martin was a member of the Richland Church of Christ and of Local 214, Laborers Union.
