| 3947 | Class of 1949 PACS MARROITT Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - September 2, 2012 Sarah “Sally” Jean Marriott August 27, 2012 Sarah J. Marriott, a resident of Cameron, NC, died Monday, August 27, in Benton, KY, where she was visiting. Sarah was born July 15, 1932, in a small farm house in Pulaski, NY, the daughter of David Gladstone and Hazel Hilton Brown. She spent her childhood helping her mother in the kitchen and being teased by her five brothers. When she graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1949, she was known as the gal with a zest for practical jokes who wanted to be a nurse, a career she postponed to be a mother. She married Clifford Drake, and they had a son, Clifford Jr., and were married until Clifford’s death from cancer in 1957. She later married Harold L. Marriott and they added three more boys to their family, Christopher, Duglas and James. Thirty-four years after graduating high school, Sarah became an LPN working for three years at the VA Hospital in Syracuse, NY. She then moved to the Fayetteville, NC, area with Harold. Harold died from cancer in 1987, and Sarah continued her career in nursing at the VA in Fayetteville until she retired in 1994. Sarah, the epitome of an independent woman, with the help of family and friends established a home in Cameron, NC, where she continued through last winter to carry in her own firewood. She said, “It keeps me young.” She spent her retirement years reading, hitting the yard sales looking for bargains, and caring for her sons, while enjoying her four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. During Sarah’s last month with many difficult days spent in the hospital, it was her upbeat attitude and genuine concern for others that she will be remembered for. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack, Dick, Dugal, Roddy and Alex, and her sister Thelma. She has left behind a great void in the hearts of her sons, Clifford Drake of Camden, NY, Christopher Marriott of Cameron, NC, Duglas Marriott of Benton, KY, and James Marriott of Fayetteville, NC; her grandchildren, Erica Hamilton, Jennifer Marriott, Gregory Marriott and Cameren Drake; and her great-grandchildren, Kayli, Katherine, Kori Brooke, Lilly and Brayden. There will be no funeral service, per Sarah’s wishes. Her life prayer was, “I give you my life. Help me to be what you want me to be.” Filbeck-Cann & King Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lourdes Hospice, PO Box 7100, Paducah, KY 42002 in memory of Sarah “Sally” Marriott. | Brown, Sarah Jean (I47493)
