He was born July 13, 1934, in Youngstown, the son of Andrew J. and Anna DeGaetano Douglass. He graduated in 1952 from South High School. He worked 17 years on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad having made the last run as passenger conductor on the Phoebe Snow. He then went to work for Automatic Sprinkler Fire Protection, where he moved and resided in Syracuse, N.Y., for 35 years. In 1985, he started his own business, Salt City Sprinkler, and retired in 2000. He moved back to Canfield in 2006, after 35 years in Syracuse. He served 11 years in the Naval Reserve. His hobbies consisted of playing golf, woodworking, and going to Florida in the winter with his motor home. He married Amelia Matiscik in October of 1955. They would have been married 55 years this October. He is survived by his wife, Amelia Matiscik Douglass; four sons, Andrew (Sue) Douglass of Pulaski, N.Y., Michael (Laurie) Douglass of Springfield, Va., Mark (Leanne) Douglass of Canfield, and Charles (Kathy) Douglass of Cheyenne, Wy. He loved all eight of his grandchildren, Celia, Ian, Mark Jr., Nicole, Kenzie, Kelle, Devin and Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Anna; and a daughter, Diane Douglass, who passed away May 11, 2010. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Russell Clark, pastor of the Park Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in Pulaski Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nellie O'Brien Peterson; his father, Charles Peterson of Texas, New York; two sons, Vernon Peterson of Seber Shores and Cecil Peterson of Lakeland, Florida; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Davey of Minetto. Mrs. Elizabeth Lawrence of Pulaski and Mrs. Viola Kennison of Richland; two brothers, Charles Peterson and Ceylon Peterson both of Mexico; six sisters, Mrs. Gladys Daniels of Texas, Mrs. Lydia VanCise, Mrs. Irene Preman, Mrs. Opal Briggs and Mrs. Javena Hutchinson all of Mexico and Mrs. Bernice Spicer of Mayville; and 17 grandchildren. Mr. Peterson was born February 22nd 1898, at Mayville and was the son of Charles and Anne Bacon Peterson. He had resided in Pulaski for many years and was an employee of the New York Central Railroad until his retirement in 1951. Since that time he and Mrs. Peterson had spent their winters in Florida. Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 16, 1948 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Last Rites Held For Wayne Phelps, Saturday - Last rites for Wayne Phelps, 47, whose sudden death occurred late last Wednesday afternoon, were held Saturday at two o’clock from his late home in Forest Drive, with Rev. James N. Pauley officiating. Interment was made in Pulaski cemetery. Although Mr. Phelps had suffered a heart attack, about two weeks ago, he had recovered and, feeling much better on Wednesday, accepted an invitation to ride to the beach with some friends. He had just stepped into the Lighthouse hotel, when he collapsed, from a heart attack from which he never recovered. Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, Mrs. Viola Tanner Phelps’ a son, Donald Phelps, and two brothers, G. Edward, Pulaski and Glen Phelps, Auburn, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Rossman, Pulaski. He was born at Port Ontario in March, 1901, the son of John Franklin and Julia Tilkins Phelps. Most of his life had been spent in or near Pulaski. He attended Pulaski school and played baseball on the school team, and afterward played shortstop on the old town team, predecessors of the Panthers. She attended schools in Orwell, later going to Lacona to open a millinery business which she conducted many years. On July 30, 1912 she was married to Dr. Austin in Niagara Falls. Mrs. Alice B. Austen, for many years a resident of Lacona, passed away January 21, 1956 in Hillcrest Nursing home, Adams. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Orwell. Mrs. Austen was born in Orwell, the daughter of Allen and Rosa Waggoner Bass. She made her home in Orwell until going into the milliner business in Lacona, which she conducted for 26 years. July 30 1912, in Niagara Falls she married Dr. Fred Austen, former Lacona physician, who passed away August 2, 1928. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Bessie Groat one brother, Samuel R. | 430 | 91, of DeWitt, NY, died peacefully at his winter home in Estero, Florida, on Sunday, April 6, 2008. Vic was born January 10, 1917, in Manhattan, two years after his parents, Vladimir and Victoria, emigrated from Prague, Czechoslovakia. While attending the New York State College of Forestry, Class of 1940, he met Virginia "Bobbie" Hueber. They were married on July 4, 1942, shortly after Bobbie's graduation from Syracuse University. Vic joined the U.S. Navy in July 1941 and served on board the ship "The Prairie State." He was commissioned an ensign in January 1942 and was transferred to teach at the Naval Diesel School at Cornell University from 1942 to 1944. Vic was discharged from active duty in 1945 but remained in the Naval Reserve for 22 years, thereafter retiring with the rank of commander. In 1948, after three years of employment with US Plywood in Laconia, NH, Vic returned to Syracuse to join his father-in-law, Francis Hueber, working for Hueber Brothers Construction Co. The company incorporated in 1958 and became known as Hueber-Breuer Construction Co. While serving as vice president and then president of the company, Vic constructed many notable landmarks throughout Central New York, including The Insurance Company of North America, Syracuse University's Biological Laboratories and a major expansion of St. Joseph's Hospital. Long active in the Syracuse Builders Exchange, Vic served many years as a director before becoming president of the organization from 1985 to 1987. Vic was very involved in Holy Cross Church, the DeWitt Kiwanis and the Syracuse Power Squadron. Vic especially cherished two pastimes: SU sports and boating. Vic seldom missed an SU football or basketball game, and in 2001 he and Bobbie were named "Lifetime Most Valuable Players" by the athletic department. His interest in boating provided many years of enjoyment on the St. Lawrence River. A longtime member of the Syracuse Power Squadron, he served many years on its Bridge in numerous positions, including commodore. He especially enjoyed his time at Binnacle Island. Vic was predeceased in 2003 by his wife, Bobbie, with whom he shared his life for 61 years. He recently celebrated his 91st birthday surrounded by all his children and grandchildren in Naples, Florida. Surviving are his daughter, Pat Smoyer of Estero, FL, son-in-law, Ron and grandchildren, Chris Ray and Robb Ray; son, Jim of Fayetteville, daughter-in-law, Cathy and grandchildren, Andy, Connie and Charlie; daughter, Peggy Mooney of Jamesville, son-in-law, Doug and grandchildren, Kristin and Allison. Vic also leaves behind a devoted companion, Lynn Britt, also of Estero, FL. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 10, at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 E.
